Tip #1: How to buy the RIGHT powder product for your skin!

“When it comes to eyeshadows, blushes, and all other powder products, remember to try before you buy! Sample them on the back of your arm, the top of your hand… Because the pigment may look incredibly rich in the package, but that doesn’t mean it’s how it’s going to read on the skin. That tip will save you a LOT of money!”

Tip #2: Don’t forget to catch dark circles!

“Remember: dark circles are sneaky! Not only do we get them right [under the inner corners of our eyes], they also pop out [in the outer corners] and [above the inner corners]. If you want your clients to look incredibly alert, crisp, gorgeous, lifted, and awake, don’t forget those stubborn, sneaky areas!”

Tip #4: How to get the BEST lashes with mascara!

“For the absolute luscious and thickest lashes, apply mascara to both the bottom and top of the lash. Here’s a little trick: [on the] top of the lash, set it on, curl it in, and it’ll twist the lashes in [like it would] the final curl at the end of a blowout; lifting and opening the eyes.

[Then] place it right below the lower lash line. Give it a shimmy to add depth to those lashes, and then pull it right through. You’ll have long, beautiful lashes, coated root to tip, and they will look like a million bucks!”

Tip #7: The SECRET of proper makeup education!

“There’s a huge misconception that makeup is all unrestrained creativity; “I’m expressing myself constantly – I’m an ARTIST!”

Well, there is truth to that, of course, if you’re working on yourself or have full control over a photoshoot. But 90 or more percent of the time in the real world of makeup, you are a conduit for someone else’s desire – whether it be the bride, the creative director, right?

The only way you can do that is NOT by having memorized the looks. It’s by understanding the classic techniques, and being able to assemble them to meet the needs of the person who’s hired you. That’s the secret of education.”

Stay tuned for future installments of this series, where we’ll continue to compile and share Nathan’s educational and practical ‘Tuesday Tips’. Learning makeup has never been this exciting! ❤️️

He also helped me to believe in myself, my work, and my WORTH."

Industry Spotlight: Charlotte Ravet

By Featured, Industry Spotlight No Comments

After completing a diploma of history of arts at La Sorbonne University in Paris, Charlotte Ravet decided to follow her true passion. After signing up for makeup artist classes, she began studying the craft. The techniques learned from celebrity makeup artists, combined with her passion for drawing and painting, led her to develop a unique method of application for corrective and artistic makeup.

Her natural gifts didn’t go unnoticed. Charlotte’s talents were in high demand as she worked for major European television stations, as well as on celebrities. Robbie Williams, the cast of the hit TV show Glee, and presenters of major events (such as Paris fashion week) are just a few of her many notable clients over the years. She also began presenting live seminars at L’Oréal Paris!

In 2014, Charlotte decided to open her career internationally, and moved to Australia. It was here that she began collaborating with top Australian photographers. Her innovative versatility was shared with the world through:

  • Advertising campaigns
  • Fashion events
  • Editorial prints
  • Music videos
  • Working with some of Australia’s most prominent faces (i.e. Simon Baker, Stephanie Claire Smith, etc.)
  • And so much more!

She has developed educational programs as a leading brand consultant, and has even created her own masterclasses for professional makeup artists! In 2018, Charlotte was awarded Best Makeup Educator for the Australian Makeup Industry Awards. Throughout her career, Charlotte has been nominated for and won countless other awards. Truly, they are all a testament to her skills.

After becoming the international makeup artist and retail education representative for the brand, By Terry, Charlotte now shares her MUA career between France and Australia. Professionalism, vibrancy, and outstanding skill have made Charlotte Ravet a sought-out industry expert by professionals and students alike!

Let’s learn more about Charlotte!

1. Where did your love of makeup come from? When (and why) did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I’ve always had a passion for art and drawing. My dream was originally to become a costume designer, or an archaeologist. After completing my Bachelor of History of Art, I realized that what I actually needed to do was be able to create with my hands. I was looking to learn a skill; something that would allow me to travel and live different experiences every day.

The idea of becoming a makeup artist came naturally. I didn’t know much about the industry before I started looking into it. Makeup artists weren’t as popular then as they are now. I visited a few academies, signed up for makeup artist classes, worked as dishwasher to pay for my studies, and never looked back!

I quickly became passionate about makeup as I was learning it. I had the feeling that what I was seeing or drawing on paper was something I could actually create on faces. I had an amazing makeup trainer. They offered exceptional techniques that were based on measuring face proportions, and creating a full face makeup look using only primary colors. Once you master these techniques, you can pretty much do anything!

2. Tell us about your makeup business, and the kinds of services you offer!

Well… I feel like I’ve done a 100 different jobs centering around being a makeup artist. This what is fantastic about having a skill – it opens up so many more doors for you than just job opportunities!

I started by doing makeup in the TV industry, as well as location shoots in Paris and across Europe. Then I had the opportunity to work with major fashion designers – such as Prada and MiuMiu – as the head of makeup for their private events in Paris. From there, I decided to learn English in order to elevate my career to an international level.

Once I’d moved to Australia, I started working for private clients. I worked hard to develop my professional network by getting involved in various productions and fashion projects. I also started teaching for academies. I’ve imported and developed a professional makeup brand through masterclasses, which quickly became popular. In fact, I was granted the title of ‘Makeup Educator of the Year’ back in 2018!

I know also work for the brand, By Terry, and am responsible for developing the educational content, delivering training for the brand, and illustrating/creating different looks.

These days, I’ve also developed a love for creative makeup, and want to focus on this type of work for now. I feel I have still so much to learn and explore!

3. You’ve done a lot of editorial work over the years. Got any tips for aspiring makeup artists who are interested in specializing in this field?

My main recommendation would be to plan ahead! It might take time to earn money as an editorial makeup artist. Take part in stylized photoshoots. The most creative projects are rarely the ones we’re paid for – but they show off our skills to potential clients!

Magazine companies often don’t pay much for a creative series, but getting yourself published in a renowned fashion magazine is one of the best ways to advertise your work. It also helps to keep up with current trends. Explore new challenges and never stop searching for new inspiration!

When I do an editorial shoot, it’s not work – it’s a passion. I’m pretty sure a lot of makeup artists would tell you the same thing.

4. Why do you feel that makeup artist classes are critical to becoming a successful MUA?

Professional training is the single most effective way to learn how to apply makeup properly – and for ALL types of work!

Without the right makeup education, you can be an amazing artist in one area, sure. But if you lack the skills in every other area of makeup artistry and don’t understand basic makeup theory and techniques, you’ll have a much smaller opportunity for real success.

Don’t limit yourself!

5. What are 3 secrets to your personal success as a makeup artist?

First, always be professional! I want all of my clients to be extremely satisfied with my work. It’s important that I never fail to leave a good impression.

Second: find the right balance between relying on proper techniques vs. your creativity. Personally, I love breaking down a makeup plan and  searching for what’s working (or not working) in an image. Being creative is about discovering this fine line between what’s technically impressive, but also visually beautiful.

It’s sometimes hard to explain. As an educator, I can teach techniques, but I can’t teach taste. Creativity can only come from within the individual themselves.

And third: never convince yourself that you don’t still have room to keep learning. This is what keeps me going. Despite how awful COVID-19 has been, this year has also helped to me pause, think about where I was, and figure out what I want to do going forward.

I’ve looked at all my work, identified where I want to improve, and planned out which new skills I want to learn. Part of being an artist is being humble. You are never going to master your craft 100% – and that’s okay! Think of it as a never-ending opportunity to expand your skills and gain new knowledge.

There will ALWAYS be something we can learn. As a makeup artist, I feel it’s really important to know this.

6. For all the aspiring MUAs out there, what are your top 5 tips for getting started?

  1. Be careful with hygiene! Especially now more than ever, following rules to keep both your client and yourself safe is a must.
  2. Being a makeup artist requires hard work! Yes, you can be passionate about makeup – but if you choose it as a career, it’s a job just like any other. You’ll get what you put into it. So, if you aren’t willing to give it your all, it’s probably not the career for you.
  3. Look after your network and choose your connections wisely! You’ll meet lot of people, especially as a freelancer. Avoid time-wasters. Learn who these people are, the kind of work they do, and their reputation within the industry. Always keep a professional focus and set the desired outcome when building your network.
  4. Don’t freak out if there are sometimes gaps between jobs! This happens to all of us, trust me. Work can sometimes take time to come. Try not to take it personally or be too hard on yourself. That being said, don’t just sit around and wait for work to come to you either. Instead, use this downtime as an opportunity to focus on your marketing strategies, learning new techniques, enrolling in makeup artist classes, etc.
  5. Always keep learning! I know I mentioned this already, but believe me, it really is that crucial! Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned MUA, you’re never going to know everything. The moment you trick yourself into thinking you do is the moment your success will start to plateau.

7. Finally, tell us 3 surprising things about yourself!

  1. I hate doing makeup on myself! I can spend maybe 5 minutes on myself, but I find it difficult to get creative. I tried doing more makeup on myself during lock-down but I simply have no patience doing something on my own face!
  2. Since I took makeup artist classes and completed my diploma, I’ve ALWAYS done makeup artistry full-time. I’ve never needed a second job on the side. I consider myself very lucky to be able to say this.
  3. I have earned many awards, but the hardest competition I’ve ever had to face was actually for my Visa. There are only 200 Distinguished Talent Visas granted worldwide per year – and this accounts for sport, research, and art categories combined! I had to submit a very long application. In the end, though, I was granted it, which allowed me to have permanent residency in Australia.

How COVID-19 is Changing the Game: Adapting Our Makeup Strategy

By Uncategorized No Comments

I’m not one to mince words, so here’s the truth: masks are great for protecting us (and others) against COVID-19. They are absolutely, 100%, without a doubt a necessity. But man, if they aren’t a total buzzkill when it comes to my makeup routine!

Earlier this week, in Part 1 of this two-part series, we took a look at how masks have been causing problems for our skin and leading to ‘maskne’. It wasn’t just a Debbie Downer post, though, I promise. We also explored ways to work around this problem, since – let’s be real – happy skin is important to all of us.

So, don’t worry! Rest assured, this article offers a light at the end of the tunnel, too. Because as you’ll quickly see, makeup artists are true masters of adapting. You think a little mask is going to stop us from doing what we do best?

No way!

With the right makeup training and knowledge, you can switch up your makeup routine so that you can still rock your best, most glamorous war paint – even when sporting a face mask.

Goodbye, Contour!

Sure, it can be argued that some lightweight, basic foundation is still a practical idea. There are times when we may briefly remove our masks while outdoors. But gone are the days of contouring, am I right?

There’s just no need for it anymore. I’m sure it’ll eventually make a roaring comeback once things go back to normal, but for the time being, it’s pretty much pointless for the everyday person. Why put in all that time and effort if no one’s even going to see it?

The same can pretty much be said about lip makeup. All that money that you’re used to spending on lipsticks and stains? Feel free to keep it, or at least invest it into some good-quality lip balms. (Hey, they still need hydration, after all!)

It’s honestly no surprise that over the past several months, the market for cosmetic products has seen a bit of a decline. Or rather, the demand for certain types of products…

Hello, Eye Makeup!

As it so happens, other types of cosmetics have been doing just fine! Big-named brands, such as L’Oréal and Ulta, have reported that products primarily focusing on the eyes, brows, and upper half of the face have been doing particularly well.

Why is this?

Because the upper half of our face is mask-free, of course! The eyes have always been called “the window to the soul”, but these days, they are quite literally the focal point of our faces. They can convey our emotions, our personalities, our thoughts, and our sense of style.

Needless to say, those of us with a love of makeup have been eager to make the most of a crappy situation. Whether it’s a tiny bit of mascara, or an intensely bold smoky eye – our eyes give us a chance to continue channeling our creativity and express ourselves!

Since many of us still have to practice social distancing, now is also the prime time to experiment! Play with your makeup at home. Practice your skills. Consider those random trips to the grocery store to be your moment to shine on the catwalk. Who says you can’t have fun, right?

You may wind up discovering a particular eye look that you fall head over heels in love with!

Join in on the Trend

While it’s never a smart business move to do nothing more than copy other artists’ work, there is something to be said about optimizing current trends for your benefit. If you have any social media channels for your makeup business (such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or your own beauty blog), share your mask-friendly makeup ideas with the world!

Online living is especially popular right now, all across the globe. Mask-friendly makeup looks are a hot topic for millions of people. This provides you with a golden opportunity to hop on the bandwagon and get your name out there by producing relevant (yet still unique) content.

You never know – your online visibility could increase, potentially leading to future clients!

Use This Time to Get Proper Makeup Training!

If you’re reading this and don’t feel overly confident in your makeup skills, you may be thinking, “This is all fine and dandy – but how can I follow these suggestions? I’m no professional makeup artist!”

Sure, maybe not right now. But you COULD be.

Yes, you heard me. You don’t need to be rich, or have any prior training, or even leave the comfort of your own home. If you’re a bit self-conscious about learning the ropes, online makeup school is your best friend. It also goes without saying that it’s particularly your best friend in the middle of a global pandemic!

The right school will offer expert makeup training from real, working MUAs in the beauty industry. You’ll have the freedom to work at your own pace, practice your skills on your own terms, and take your skill-set to that of a professional level.

Not to mention that when all this finally blows over, you’ll have a professional certification under your belt. You’ll be ready and properly prepared to venture out into the competitive industry and start booking clients right away!

Not to sound like Chandler Bing or anything… but could there BE any better way to follow your dreams!?

How COVID-19 is Changing the Game: The ‘Maskne’ Crisis

By Makeup Tips and Tricks No Comments

At this point, it’s a bit redundant to point out that COVID-19 has changed life as we know it this year. I mean, that much is obvious. What may not be quite as obvious, however, is the impact the pandemic has had on our overall skincare and makeup routine.

I’ll just say upfront: if you’re an anti-masker, this article is probably not for you. (But while you’re here, it’d be cool if you got it together and started wearing a mask. But hey, that’s an entirely different topic.)

For those of us who’ve been abiding by recommended safety precautions, though, face masks have become a daily part of our fashion style. Some of us prefer the standard masks; others have been purchasing them hand-made. Heck – they even come in a variety of colors, patterns, and designs. It’s now considered “trendy” to match your mask with your outfit!

As beneficial as they are, there are admittedly downsides. Two in particular are:

  • The ‘maskne’ crisis, and
  • The fact that half of our hard-earned makeup routine is now pretty much useless

That being said, there’s a simple solution to BOTH of these dilemmas. In this two-part series, we’ll take a look at both issues, as well as how to work around them. Today, in Part 1, let’s start by talking about the dreaded ‘maskne’!

Maskne

What is ‘Maskne’?

Basically, it’s the acne breakout that many of us have been experiencing since we started wearing our masks. Thanks to the fabric of the mask constantly rubbing against our face, we’re getting micro-tears on our skin’s surface. These tiny little tears allow for dirt and bacteria to enter and clog up our pores.

Plus, consider the fact that it’s already a billion degrees outside in a lot of places right now – and then we’re going and adding more heat and moisture when we breathe. The lower half of our face is essentially living in a sauna. The result is that our skin is being bombarded with an excessive amount of oil, sweat, and potential germs – with no place to run and hide!

Note: I should probably point out that I am 100% pro-mask, and am in no way trying to knock it or dissuade anyone from following PPE protocols. I’m merely a little birdy pointing out the facts. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s move on.

How Can We Prevent Maskne?

A few months back, we discussed why the importance of your skincare routine is of utmost importance during the pandemic. So, that’s a good place to start! In general, you can’t expect to have happy, healthy skin if you aren’t properly taking care of it.

Skincare knowledge is critical for makeup artists – but as a human being, it’s also just as valuable. Do some research online, look into different products, and learn about safe ingredients. If you’re feeling extra ambitious and really want to become a skincare expert, you have everything to gain by taking a course!

All I’m saying is, knowledge is power.

Once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll then be ready to take it a step further. The specific issues that cause maskne need to be combatted in equally specific ways. For example, I just mentioned that clogged pores are a major cause of the problem. So, should you opt for thick, heavy skincare products?

Probably not.

covid makeup

Rather, you should adapt your skincare routine and approach it with the following in mind:

  • Try to use lightweight, water-based products as much as possible. Your skin will be able to breathe easier!
  • Don’t get stingy with your moisturizer! If you go with a lighter-weight product, you can pack on a bit more onto your skin, in order to give it extra protection!
  • Give your skin some extra love on a regular basis. Exfoliate your skin once in a while, deep-cleanse the crap out of it here and there – you get it. A little extra love never hurt anyone.

While you’re at it, it wouldn’t hurt to do a bit of research and learn more about your specific skin type. That can have a big impact on the types of skincare products you should be using on your face, as well as how you should be approaching your personalized skincare regimen.

For instance, if you have oily skin and/or already deal with acne (like myself), you may need a stronger game plan than someone with dry skin and the complexion of a newborn baby.

I’m not saying that professional skincare training is the best way to learn this info – but I’m also not not saying that. 😉

The Benefits of a Skincare Course

You mean, aside from becoming a skincare wizard (which would be downright awesome)?

Well, for starters, it’s a great addition to your makeup business! Incorporating skincare services can attract more clients, increase your profits, and transform you into an even stronger MUA. It’s always important to find ways to stand out from the competition, and this is definitely one of the best!

Then you can add in the fact that, as a makeup artist, you’re always on the hunt for new and exciting knowledge. You’ll get a better understanding of the beauty industry as a whole, as well as an even better mastery of makeup. After all, if you don’t understand skin, how can you possibly hope to apply makeup to it properly?

(If you want an idea of the type of information you’d learn from expert training, check out the course breakdown of QC Makeup Academy’s accredited Skincare Course!)

Now, I know that some of you out there may not be makeup artists, or have no interested in becoming one. I respect that. But what about becoming a certified skincare consultant and starting up your very own business? Or building your reputation through a stellar skincare blog? Or using your expertise to represent a major cosmetics brand?

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi, I’m Travis! I’m 24, non-binary gay, and I live in New York! My “natural” hair color is blue/green, as I’ve had that shade most of my life. My entire life has been influenced and surrounded by film and television. That’s how I get to most of my destinations in life!

I used to be an entertainment writer, and somehow have joined the makeup world. So, I can definitely say that film and television is my calling – at least to some capacity.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

It actually stemmed from my love of film and television! I’ve always wanted a career in the entertainment industry, but I never knew in what capacity. I absolutely love recreating clothes, signs, etc from movies and television.

One day, I was inspired to recreate a specific makeup look, and that was when I instantly fell in love with makeup. I love the idea that you don’t always have to use it to hide your flaws, but rather, to express yourself. It’s kind of like dying your hair, but more intricate!

How would you describe your makeup style?

I go through phases! More recently, I’ve loved natural makeup styles. (Which is a very odd choice for me, given my day-to-day style.)

But my staple makeup looks, the ones I absolutely love doing and that got me started, are editorial looks! I love the idea of taking these looks that you would wear for photoshoots, film, etc and wearing them everywhere! All the shapes and colors make me so happy! Anything from very clean-cut looks to messy, eyeshadow everywhere looks… I love it so much.

The more color, the better!

You have a talent for creating fun, colorful eye looks! Where does your inspiration come from?

Everywhere! I truly just love color! My entire surrounding is a rainbow; from my desk, to my shelves, to my actual makeup. Color makes me happy, and it tends to make most people you meet happy as well. So, I like to incorporate as much color as I can.

Sometimes, I’ll take an entire rainbow eyeshadow palette and use every single color. Why? Because no one can stop me, haha!

My biggest inspirations for liner looks, and the use of gems/rhinestones, comes from other Instagrammers, as well as HBO’s Euphoria! Both of these combined make my brain explode in creativity. I typically sit down without an idea of what I want to create, and then just dive in!

Either it will look clean and sharp, or it’ll be messy. But honestly, I love any outcome. Anything will look purposeful if you believe it is!

You’ve had your YouTube channel for the past several years, but started incorporating makeup into your content focus over the past 10 months. What are your hopes and goals for your beauty vlog, and how do you intend to achieve them?

This was something I really had to sit down and think about when I started posting videos. I have many long-term goals for my beauty vlog, but my first goal is to eventually be able to do it full-time. I have yet to find a job setting that I thrive and feel comfortable in – and making videos does both for me.

Other than that, I want to be an inspiration to EVERYONE who enjoys makeup! I want people to embrace the notion that makeup has no rules; that they can just run with it.

I’ll never be a place where people will come to learn how to do a natural, soft glam look. That simply isn’t me. Soft, natural looks are something I practice and want to learn on my own time, but it isn’t necessarily the brand or message I want to send to my audience.

Rather, I want people to take as little or as much makeup as they want, and just throw it on their face and find the beauty in it! I’m still getting there. I know I have a lot of work ahead of me! Most of my current videos are makeup hauls or reviews. It’s all I can think of doing right now, and that is totally fine.

It’s not the most original content right now, but as long as I can entertain someone for 10 minutes or so and help take their mind somewhere else, I’m happy. I want my channel to evolve naturally – even if that takes me a lifetime.

Who are your MUA idols? Tell us why!

Vanessa, a.k.a @cutcreaser on Instagram. She is the graphic liner queen. Her looks are so detailed, yet simple. I wish I had just a sliver of her skills for one day!

I also look up to Patrick Starr. He truly embodies the notion that makeup is for everyone, and it shows it in everything he creates. I wish to help spread that same message one day.

Other MUAs I admire are Doniella Davy, Kirsten Sage Coleman, and Tara Lang. They all did makeup for HBO’s show, Euphoria, and that series basically launched my journey into fun and weird makeup looks.

If you could see yourself 5 years into the future, where do you hope your makeup career will be? What will you have accomplished?

I would love to be doing makeup for film and television. I’m never one to stay in one place for long, so who knows where I will be doing makeup!

I also hope to have made YouTube a profitable platform that I can rely on, as well as launching my very own eyeshadow palette. I’m trying not to overthink it all, but bigger and weirder thing can happen in a span of 5 years. So, we shall see!

In your own opinion, what makes a YouTube beauty vlogger successful and popular with their audience?

People want someone who is real; who are themselves, unapologetically and unabashedly. I believe that is the core of it. You can post whatever content you want, but if you’re not being yourself, no one will enjoy it to the fullest extent. Even if being authentically yourself puts you back 10 more steps than the rest of the crowd, in the end, it’ll throw you 50 steps ahead.

For me, success isn’t defined by numbers or money, even if they do play a part in it. I mean, you can have the best of both worlds, but being successful is such a personal thing. It’s up to you and what you want to achieve.

For me, personally, it would be to do beauty content full-time. Keep in mind that my idea of success might grow after achieving that. I think it’s good to continue to raise the bar for yourself. Just don’t let those goals equate to your idea of success!

Let your success be a personal thought – not numbers or money.

You’ve completed Units A through C of your online makeup class. What important things have you learned so far that you didn’t know before?

This might sound very strange, but a smoky eye. Yes, a traditional smoky eye! Like I said before, natural makeup has never been my thing. It’s beautiful, but not for me. So, learning that technique blew my mind!

It was super easy and looks gorgeous. I immediately had to do a smoky eye with colorful shadows. It’s a new favorite look of mine. I’m very happy I now know how to achieve that flawless blend.

Another thing learned is working on other people! I’ve only done that a few times, but it’s been nice learning about sanitization and being gentle with clients. (These are both things I fail to do when I put on makeup on myself.)

Online makeup classes really make you think more about what you’re using and not using, and I really like that.

What made you want to earn your makeup certificate, and why did you decide to do it through online makeup classes?

I really needed that certificate of approval; that I’m capable of doing this, and that there’s an accredited makeup institution that can attest to my skill. I love labels for myself, so why not add to the roster?

I chose online makeup school because I’m ALWAYS moving! Not by choice really; just how life seems to roll with me, which I love. So online was necessary, as I could never commit to a brick-and-mortar makeup school for so long. I like the flexibility of being able to do my work whenever, and from wherever.

Why did you ultimately choose QC Makeup Academy, and how has your experience been?

I’d heard nothing but great things! I loved the prices and the course breakdown. It was exactly how I pictured my online dream school would be. Also, the flexibility of doing my work whenever I had the time was a big thing. Overall, my experience has been excellent! I have received nothing but support and love from everyone.

You’re being tutored by celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson. How has your experience with Nathan been so far?

I love Nathan! He breaks down everything so perfectly in the course videos. You can tell he has a real passion for makeup, and it shows in everything he does. His critiques for my work have been so helpful, too! He catches stuff that I never even thought of before. It’s definitely changed the way I view certain makeup looks!

What’s ONE false myth about makeup artists that you’d like to debunk right here and now?

That they are better than you. This is something I used to think of makeup artists, and I’m ashamed I was ever so judgmental like that.

Makeup artists aren’t here to tell you you’re wrong; they are here to help you! They also have bad makeup days, and they also don’t know certain techniques. They’re learning just like everyone else. And I can tell you, they definitely do not talk about you behind your back. The most they’ll do is sometimes brag about what a good job they did… but can you blame them!?

Imagine: You get to banish ONE makeup product out of existence for the remainder of time. Which product do you choose to get rid of, and why?

I still use these because I have so many, but let’s be honest… liquid to matte lipsticks.

I have NO idea why we thought these were the coolest thing ever, but we did. While the payoff is incredible, our lips just don’t deserve the harsh treatment it goes through. They all are always so drying! You have to apply them too often for comfort, or it winds up looking like you’re dehydrated.

Again, the payoff of the color is admittedly incredible. But the feeling is so unpleasant. It’s not worth it for me!

3 Ways to Retain Long-Term Clients for Your Makeup Business

By Your Makeup Career No Comments

A career in makeup artistry means your business is – and always will be – client-focused. You’re providing customer service, after all! So, here’s a question to ponder: is it more worth it to acquire new customers, or retain the ones you already have?

Obviously, both are important for sustaining a successful business. But if we absolutely HAD to rank one above the other, the fact is, repeat customers are your most beneficial resource! Not only are they proven to spend 3 times more money than brand new clients; they’re more likely to bring you more bookings in the future. Not to mention, they save you money. (New clients are shown to cost 5 times as much money to acquire!)

Repeat customers are key to your career in makeup artistry. This means you’re going to need to know how to bring a happy customer back for the long term. Luckily, there are tons of options at your disposal!

Here are 3 strategies you can incorporate into the business that aims to keep your clients coming back to you, time and time again!

1. Provide the best possible customer experience!

Excellent customer service is crucial for ANY job where you’re dealing with the public. Being a makeup artist means you need awesome people skills – at all times. The best makeup job in the world won’t matter if it’s paired with a lousy attitude.

There are numerous stats to back this up, too. For instance, a survey done by 24/7 revealed that 47% of customers would choose (within a mere 24 hours) to take their business elsewhere after receiving poor customer service. Moreover, a client who had a wholly satisfactory experience with you will have a tendency to become a repeat customer, as opposed to those who merely have an “okay” experience.

In fact, these clients who are “totally satisfied” are likely to deliver 2.6 times as much revenue for your business in the long haul! WOW!

2. Offer Personalized Incentives

Your clients don’t want to feel like just another paycheck in your pocket. They want to trust that you see them as human beings; that you’re on their side and value them. This is where a personalized incentive of some kind can make all the difference!

A whopping 60% of customers tend to stay loyal to a brand that offers them rewards of some kind. There are plenty of different ways you can go about providing this type of incentive. Some examples include:

  • Loyalty programs – i.e. a membership/rewards account with your business, points programs, VIP client programs (subscription-based), tier programs (each level offering different types of discounts), etc.
  • Charity programs– i.e. demonstrating that you and your client share mutual values, by welcoming them to donate to an important charitable cause.
  • Exclusive discounts and promotions– i.e. offered privately to those subscribed to a mailing list, those following your social media channels, etc.
  • Birthday promos– i.e. customers who provide their date of birth will receive some sort of discount or special gift whenever their birthday rolls around.
  • And so much more!

The secret behind the success of personalized incentives is that, above all else, it demonstrates to your client that you care about THEM! You’re willing to offer them fun, practical ways to save money, while still receiving the same high-quality service. These are the types of efforts that go a LONG way, and help cultivate long-term relationships with clients who will grow to truly appreciate the way you run your business.

3. Create a Referral Program

Any professional MUA will tell you that word of mouth is a MAJOR contributor to the overall prosperity of your career in makeup artistry! Happy customers are more likely to come back to you in the future – and they’re also more likely to recommend you to people they know as well.

You can drastically increase this probability if you give them an added reason to refer you to their friends and family. Referral programs are the obvious strategy!

There’s no “one size fits all” way for you to go about setting this up. You can set your own parameters for the rules, as well as the reward. For example, you can create your program so that whenever an existing client recommends you to someone, and it results in a new booking from that referred person, your existing client gets 50% off their next appointment with you.

A solid referral program works in favor of both you and your long-term clients. It gets you more customers while keeping the ones you already have, which all lead to an increase in profits. At the same time, it also gets your existing clients excited about recommending you while gifting them with a special reward that personally benefits them.

At the end of the day, EVERY client is fundamental for your business and career in makeup artistry. But many businesses don’t truly understand the importance of existing customer retention. By making this a primary focus in your business strategies, you’ll be setting yourself up for years of success in the makeup industry!

2 MORE (But Just as Awesome) Tips to Starting Your Own Makeup Business!

By From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here.

Yesterday, Gabrielle shared 3 of her best tips for starting your very own makeup business, and setting yourself up for maximum success! Today, she’s back to reveal 2 more incredible tips. Let’s dive back in, shall we?

1. Advertising and Promoting

Like with any business, you’ll have to advertise and promote your services. Luckily, we live in the age of technology! Compared to those who came before us, we’re truly at an advantage when it comes to resources that can help us get our name out there.

Your marketing strategies can truly help your business flourish – if done correctly!

Create a Professional Website

Something that many MUAs overlook is the power of a professional website. Some artists believe that using social media is enough… But it isn’t! As great as social media can be to get your work seen by the public, there’s something to be said about creating a strong business website and portfolio online.

By limiting your business strictly to social media, you risk missing out on potential clientele and other businesses that would want to work with you. But when you have a professional website, you can also showcase exclusive work that isn’t shown on social media.

Plus, a website provides your clients the option to schedule, book, and pay for your services directly (instead of always having to speak with you through “DM’s”).

For example, Wix is a great website-hosting platform that can help you put together your business’s site. If you aren’t the most tech-savvy person in the world, no worries!

This kind of hosting platform makes designing everything simple, easy, and customizable. Because it also has hundreds of add-ons, you can enhance your website and connection with clients, depending on how fancy you want to get!

Create a Professional Portfolio

When deciding which photos to upload to the portfolio on your professional website, remember that it truly is about quality over quantity.

Your portfolio images should:

  • Be well-lit and clear
  • Ensure that any backgrounds are free of clutter
  • Stay consistent
  • Be of high-quality (this means no selfies!)

A strong portfolio will show potential clients that you take every aspect of your work and business seriously.

2. Social Media Do’s and Don’ts

Don’ts:

DON’T only create content that are recreations of another artist’s work, or only copy popular trends!

Unfortunately, I see this way too often on social media. If all you do is recreate another artist’s work, or copy popular trends, your content probably won’t attract an overly large audience. After all, people want to have their interest piqued. They want to see things that are new, fresh, and exciting!

Regurgitating looks that have already been done, and not coming up with anything of your own, will drop you into social media obscurity pretty fast. Whenever possible, always aim for originality!

DON’T display a pricing list for your services on your social media!

When I first started my brand, I saw a lot of other social media artists posting a price list for their services. So, I did too. What ends up happening is this:

  1. Potential clients see your price list
  2. They immediately make a snap decision that your prices are too high – without even looking at the quality of your work
  3. They’ll leave in favor of pursuing a “cheaper” artist

Instead, my recommendation is to omit this info from your social media altogether. When potential clients message you, guide them to your professional website. From there, they can see all of the services you offer, paired with client photos and reviews.

This will allow them to get a full, proper idea of your makeup business. They won’t just thinking of a price; they’ll see the quality of the work you provide!

Do’s:

DO post consistently, and showcase different types of clients!

A great way to stay relevant in a heavily saturated field (like social media) is to post your work consistently. Followers and clients want to see that you are booked and busy! Most importantly, make sure that you’re not only posting photos of yourself, or one type of client. To grow your brand, remember to show diversity with your clientele, as well as the looks you create.

DO post your professional website!

Social media can be a great way to help grow your business, but remember to remind your followers about your actual business website. By promoting your site, others can re-post it, or share it with someone they know. These are all potential opportunities for you to gain more clientele.

DO post when you take professional makeup training, courses, and/or receive a certificate!

Although you may think this isn’t necessary, it absolutely is! Clients want to know that you are always looking to grow in your field. Especially with everything currently going on in the world, if they see you keeping up-to-date with the latest health and safety protocols, they’re guaranteed to be impressed!

Taking online courses, furthering your makeup training, and completing certificate programs shows your clientele that you’re serious about always providing the best quality of products, skill, and safety.

If you’re just starting your business, QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course offers a FULL unit on Business that shares vital tips and tricks to help you get started and growing your brand! Though this Unit is optional, I strongly recommend taking advantage of it. It can make all the difference in the success of your makeup business!

My Top 3 Tips to Starting Your Own Makeup Business!

By From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here.

Starting any new business can be a scary step. But even though it won’t be quick (or easy), it’s still more than possible. After being in the beauty industry professionally for ten years, here are my personal top 3 tips on how YOU can start your very own makeup business!

1. Branding

First and foremost, one of the most important things when starting your business is to come up with your brand. Make sure to take time for this part. Don’t rush it! This is vital to creating your business and overall image.

Your business name is something that I strongly believe should be professional. It should also be something that can last after common trends have gone and come. There are many artists who create social media handles that are on-trend or way too common. But this can make it difficult for you to stand out in a sea of similar artists.

For example, try and stray away from a name along the lines of, Makeup by [Insert your Name]. There are a million other MUAs with similar-sounding business names. If you follow suit, what’s going to make you special?

What you want for your brand is a name that will represent you, your style, and your unique vision.

Similarly, there are many times when an artist chooses a name based on a current popular trend. But what happens when that trend fades into memory? They wind up having to change their name! The result is typically that such MUAs wind up “re-branding” their business (and switching up their names) several times over the course of their career.

Although that isn’t necessarily terrible, I think that as a professional, you want to show consistency in both your brand and business. You don’t want to have to constantly re-brand yourself frequently. When you do this, you’re potentially making it difficult for your followers and/or clientele to keep track of your business or social media.

Worst case scenario? It can drive them away, and push them to find another makeup artist.

The bottom line: think carefully about your business’s name and image. You’re going to want it to properly represent you throughout the course of your career.

2. Research and Register

The next step I highly recommend is to research and register your business. When I launched my own makeup business, one of the most important things I learned was: “If you want to be seen as a professional, you have to be a professional.”

By “be a professional”, I mean that it’s imperative for you to research into legitimizing and legally securing your business and its name. If you skip this step, you could be setting yourself up for a LOT of complications down the road!

Yes, it can be a bit confusing at first, even a bit stressful – especially if you have no prior experience as an entrepreneur. But trust me, it’s so worth it in the long run. So, spend the time and money to make your business legal. By doing so, you’ll be putting yourself a step above other social media artists.

Not to mention, you’ll protecting yourself and your hard-earned business!

Using companies such as LegalZoom really helped me to get my business off the ground and running. They provided me with all the tools I needed to become a legal business. Not only are these resources it cost effective; they have agents that are there to assist you with questions, filing, and paperwork.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to follow through in registering your business. When you do this, you are protecting yourself in the event that there’s ever a dispute with a client (such as a lawsuit, for example). Becoming a legal business can save you and your reputation down the line!

3. Networking

Network, network, network!

As a new business, your best friend – and biggest ally – will be to network with other artists, photographers, and creators. Even if you aren’t sure where to start, social media can provide many avenues for you to collaborate with others.

Networking can be such a valuable asset to your business! When you network with other artists and creators, you’re opening yourself up to new clients, job opportunities, and connections. Most importantly, you learn countless new things, too.

I’ve worked with several photographers and makeup artists over the years. Through my collaborations with them, I’ve discovered countless tips for makeup, gaining clientele, expanding my brand, lighting, taking higher-quality photos, and even being a business owner.

Don’t let shyness stop you from branching out and connecting with others. There is so much you can learn from your peers that’ll help you better yourself as a professional!

Did you know that stylized photoshoots are an excellent way to network AND book you more future jobs? Keep reading to find out why!
