Tip #1: The importance of classic makeup techniques!

“Classic makeup techniques are the bases for everything in makeup. If you truly master them, you’ll see that they can be shaped, shifted, [and] transformed to create anything in makeup – from the simplest, cleanest look, to the most dramatic and unseen look!

It’s all in the precision of those classic techniques, and when you know them, you can do anything.”

Tip #2: Why practice makes perfect!

“Not everybody gets everything in makeup on the first try. Sometimes, you’ve got to practice things again, and again, and again, and again. So, if something’s a little stubborn for you, DO it – again, and again, and again, and again!

Because once you get it, guess what? [It] never leaves you.”

Tip #6: The secret to perfecting even eyeliner on loose eyelid skin!

“Is loose eyelid skin causing you to have bumpy, uneven eyeliner? Here’s a trick: tilt the head back, look down (eyes open to a little crack), and that will keep the eyelid skin super tight – allowing for a crisp, even application.

Want to keep it even easier? Use a soft pencil or a liquid, because it won’t grab the skin!”

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a retired special education teacher. In my 33 years as an educator, I have taught students from ages 5 through 17, in multiple different settings. I have worked with students that have disabilities; ranging from learning disabled, autistic, speech/language disorders, and students with severe/profound multiple disabilities. I am also married and have 2 adult children.

Why did you decide to earn your makeup artist certification and become a professional MUA?

I have always been fascinated by the transformation that makeup techniques can make. Since my retirement, I am now able to devote my time and attention to studying and practicing my passion. I have a curiosity for makeup and all it can do!

How would you describe your makeup style?

I would define my makeup style as a natural, clean look. Most of my practicing has been on models with more mature skin, or on women who do not typically wear makeup.

It’s an awesome feeling to apply makeup, and explain what I’m using and what I am doing. To have the client be amazed at how they look with such little makeup applied is a wonderful moment. Unless I’m doing a fantasy or special effects look, my style can be summed up as: “less is more”.

You aced both your Master Makeup Artistry Course and your Special FX Makeup Course. Congratulations! Overall, how did you find the online learning process and the assistance you received from your instructors?

I was very excited to enroll, but also very anxious. The Mastery Makeup Artistry Course was my first ever online course. But I found that the Student Support Specialists are extremely helpful. I don’t know what I would have done without the help and support from Shannon, in particular.

The entire process of enrolling, getting started, accessing your course materials, and submitting your Units is all very clear. ALL of my instructors/tutors – Nathan Johnson, Michele Mulkey, Corianne Cowan, and Laurie Vukich – are amazing. They provide positive feedback, as well as advice and ways to improve your work. They push me to be the best makeup artist and hair stylist I can be!

What is it about special effects makeup that you find the most fascinating?

It is so fun! All makeup can transform you, but special effects makeup can add that extra bit of shock. It’s also very challenging making the effect look “real”, and not just applied for shock value. There are lots of subtleties which may seem simple, but are not. For example: adding 5 o’clock shadow to a man, adding a mustache or beard, and old age makeup are all very tricky.

You’re also currently on Unit C of QC’s Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you decide to include hair styling in your overall repertoire?

I chose to enroll in the Hair Styling Essentials Course to broaden my skill-set. Since the theater is a venue I hope to work more in, having hair and makeup skills will be an asset. I did the makeup for 2 community plays, and the directors had actually asked me if I also did hair. At the time, I did not – so I knew I needed to get hair styling training!

On top of the professional makeup you’ve done for community theatre productions, you’ve also been involve in a calendar shoot and a kids’ show. Can you tell us a little bit about these experiences?

I did the makeup for a community theater show called Calendar Girls. In addition to the show, they made a calendar to go along with the show, which I also did the makeup for. Other than practicing for my Course, this was my first “professional” experience. It was awesome. I had so much fun!

I had to teach myself how to apply a bald cap. (This was before I took the Special FX Makeup Course.) I also did some makeup and assisted a bit with hair for a community children’s show, Prince and Princesses. On top of that, I got to do some makeup applications for a local thrift store’s fashion show fundraiser.

I was supposed to do the makeup for the community show Little Women this past summer, but it’s been postponed due to the pandemic.

What did you choose to pursue your makeup artist certification through QC Makeup Academy?

Since my retirement, I’ve been able to devote my time and attention to studying makeup artistry. I browsed online an looked at the different online makeup schools, but QC Makeup Academy immediately caught my attention. I did my research, and decided to call and speak with someone.

I was anxious to begin an online class, having never taken one – especially in makeup, nonetheless! I spoke with Shannon a few times, and she was so encouraging and motivating. She stated that there was assistance whenever I needed it. I did need to call a couple of times… and she was right! Shannon and all of the online support staff are extremely positive and helpful.

makeup artist certification graduate, Mark Lenzi, wearing fresh bruise SFX makeup

Is there any particular makeup technique you’re currently working to improve?

Of course, all the time! But one skill that I need to practice a lot, in order to master its many beautiful techniques, is eyeliner. There are so many gorgeous looks, and so many different kinds of eyeliner makeup to choose from.

What’s on the horizon for you and your makeup career?

I want to continue my theater experiences, as well as participate in more community shows, fashion shows, and fundraisers. I was supposed to do a friend’s daughter’s wedding this June, but that unfortunately has been canceled.

I would also like to do makeup and hair for friends and special events. I would be very interested in volunteering for a group home for young adults with disabilities, and do their hair and makeup for special events (such as proms and dances).

Imagine: it’s Halloween, and you use your special effect makeup skills to turn yourself into ANY character you want. Which SFX look do you choose?

I have done a “zipper face” look for fun in the past, and it received a lot of positive feedback – including a lot of, “Eww!” “Yuck!” “Gross!”

So, I guess it looked pretty good. I also enjoy creating my own deep cuts with added extras, such as a large fish hook or insects.

Ambassador Feature: Paula Alleyne

By About the School, Student Ambassador No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Paula Alleyne. I am married, live in the wonderful Caribbean island of Barbados, and I decided to take makeup artistry more seriously within the last three years. It’s only when I started on my professional makeup journey that I realized my love for makeup actually began years ago.

When I was younger, I remember doing makeup on my neighbor. I loved being able to do something that helped boost her self esteem. I also always loved to read makeup books and fashion magazines, and I was absolutely enthralled with eye shadows.

As I became serious about makeup artistry, I became more selective of who I followed on social media. Once I knew that I wanted to only learn from the best, I decided I wanted to become professionally trained.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

The answer to this is two-fold:

  1. I wanted to develop my brand as a qualified makeup professional, and
  2. I didn’t want to just follow what everyone was doing on social media. Instead, I wanted to learn the actual techniques and proper education behind makeup application.

How would you describe your makeup style? Do you have a particular niche?

My makeup style is clean and classic. My niche is for persons who prefer natural enhancements of their features through makeup application.

You’ve recently become one of QC Makeup Academy’s Student Ambassadors. Congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about what your new role will entail?

As a Student Ambassador, my main responsibilities entail:

  • Encouraging new students who have enrolled in QC’s online makeup school
  • Providing support and encouragement within the Virtual Classroom on Facebook
  • Promoting QC Makeup Academy as an institution of quality learning
  • Creating high quality content, such as blog articles
  • Directing potential students who may have queries about QC’s online makeup school and educational process

Your makeup business specializes in editorial and bridal services. What is it about these areas of the beauty industry that appeal to you the most?

These areas appeal to me because they fit right into my style of natural, clean beauty!

What has been the most challenging (and the most rewarding) part of starting your own business?

Firstly, the most challenging part was being confident in my style. Due to social media, I observed that many persons loved the heavily applied makeup and heavily sculpted features. As a professional artist, I can create that look if needed. However, I prefer to enhance a person’s features – not transform it into something that’s not theirs.

The most rewarding is when clients request my services, and it’s because they want the natural enhancements, and they love the finished product!

How did your online makeup school training assist you in your journey of starting and running a successful MUA business?

Obtaining an education with QC Makeup Academy assisted in my journey in numerous ways:

  1. I became knowledgeable about makeup application techniques for various faces. Each client has their own unique skin tone, skin type, eye and facial shape, etc. Understanding these differences assists with providing an application that’s best suited for each individual.
  2. QC’s online makeup school has always promoted professionalism on the job, and this is a value which has greatly helped me in my interactions with clients. I always seek to maintain professionalism on the job. In fact, I’ve had many clients recognize and comment on this!
  3. QC Makeup Academy provides business insights for makeup artists, such as the development of contracts and business document templates. These customizable templates have proven incredibly useful in my own business transactions!

You graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry course with flying colors! Overall, how did you find the program?

I found the Master Makeup Artistry Course to be informative and interesting! I enjoyed learning all about makeup artistry in various fields such as film, theater, and SFX. The practical assignments focusing on SFX makeup were loads of fun!

How was your experience being tutored by QC executive instructor and celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson?

It was great! Having Nathan critique my work was such a confidence booster. He was always encouraging, yet critical. His feedback motivated me to continuously improve. Hearing an expert within the field commend my work made me recognize that once quality was maintained, it surpassed geographical boundaries!

online makeup school student ambassador paula alleyne's makeup portfolio - bridal shoot

What made you want to enroll in online makeup school, and why did you ultimately choose QC Makeup Academy?

Before pursuing online makeup school, I originally looked around for a brick-and-mortar school where I lived. However, the options appeared extremely limited, and I was unsure about the depth of content.

I then decided to pursue online learning. Whatever I chose, I knew it had to be flexible, as my time was already limited. Just as importantly, I had to be convinced that the online makeup school in question wasn’t a sham.

I ultimately chose QC Makeup Academy when I saw how active they are on social media. I realized it was also an established educational institution, accredited with an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau. All of this definitely allayed my fears, and showed me that QC is a legitimate as they come!

What advice would you give aspiring makeup artists who are considering online makeup school in order to earn their professional certification?

Go for it! “Never stop learning” is one of my stances. In this current environment, and in light of COVID-19, there’s been such a surge in online learning. It has become the new norm, and is truly the safest form of obtaining a solid education these days! Earning a professional certification can only enhance your ability, so don’t delay.

online makeup school student ambassador paula alleyne doing makeup on client

What’s in store for PAULA MONIQUE in the next year?

Glad you asked! You should look out for some educational content coming soon. Starting out as a professional makeup artist can be daunting. Breaking into the industry and finding solid, professional advice can feel a bit tricky at first. You can easily fall prey to trends promoted on social media.

I’m still learning, and will always be learning. Therefore, I invite everyone to learn alongside me as I engage industry professionals on topics surrounding makeup artistry!

QC Fam Friday: My Career BEFORE QC Makeup Academy

By About the School, QC Makeup Fam Friday, Student Features No Comments

Welcome to QC Makeup Fam Friday! This new monthly series will explore the thoughts, stories, and opinions of real QC students and grads. Each month, they’ll weigh in on topics surrounding makeup training, finding work in the professional world, and being an MUA in the beauty industry!

Today, they’re here to answer one very insightful question:

What was your career path or career goals BEFORE enrolling in QC’s makeup courses?

Let’s see what the QC makeup fam has to say!

Ashley Martinez

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop

“Outside of my makeup courses with QC, my career is as a Professional Luxury Photography, designed to empower women. I decided to join the QC family so I can add makeup to my client's photography experiences. Helping women feel good while with me, and helping them learn how to apply their own makeup, is the best career ever! xoxo"

Izzy Burfeind

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop

"My professional goal before enrolling in QC's makeup courses was to start working as a makeup artist for a local photographer. I wanted to perfect my makeup artistry and become certified. I want to provide the client with the best service possible. I love helping women feel beautiful!"

Brittany Bauhaus

Master Makeup Artistry / Special FX Makeup

"Before pursuing makeup artistry, I was working at a personal support worker, taking care of the elderly. As rewarding as it was, my heart wasn’t in it anymore. So thankful I found QC's makeup courses!"

Corinea KiKi Fowler

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop / Special FX Makeup / Skincare

"My career path has been 8 years with the Military as an All Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and retail. I also owned my own vape shop until I fell ill last year with a cancer called Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Losing my hair was the worst thing for me, besides the sickness. I no longer felt beautiful or like myself, so that's when I really started experimenting with makeup. The feeling I felt when I applied my makeup is what I want my clients to feel: pure amazement, and so beautiful that they can take on the world!"

Bronwen Pilgrim

Master Makeup Artistry

"I have worked in hospitality for the last 11 years. But after my daughter was born 2 years ago, I decided that I wanted to turn my passion for makeup into a career, with the goal of eventually gaining certification in other areas of beauty. I'd love to have my own salon where I can offer a range of services!"

Tasha Allen

Master Makeup Artistry / Skincare

"Before joining QC, I didn't really have a career. I am a stay-at-home mum with 4 wonderful babies (3 boys and a girl). Of course, they love the fact I am now doing makeup. I love it!!! Taking makeup courses was the best decision I have ever made, and I can't wait to show the world what I can do!"

Debbie Traugh

Master Makeup Artistry / Skincare

"Hi everyone! I have been a nurse for the past 34 years. I have always loved the world of makeup, but never thought of it as a career. I found QC's makeup courses a few years ago and thought I was too old. But I decided to take the plunge a few months ago. We will see where it takes me!"

Elly Antonia Nunns

Master Makeup Artistry / Skincare

"Before I began my amazing time at QC Makeup Academy, I was a youth group leader and youth worker. I loved engaging with my young people and pushing them to succeed in life, and to say it warmed my heart everyday is an understatement. After 5 years, I decided that it was time to push MYSELF to succeed as a makeup artist!"

Danielle Merrick

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop / Skincare / Airbrush Workshop / Hair Styling Essentials / Special FX Makeup

"Hello, QC family! I was a family counselor and worked with a lot of women who lost their partners, self esteem, or were lost. I was always overwhelmed with the fact that they let themselves go. I stopped practicing counseling and decided to work from a different angle, and help those women feel pretty again. So I fell in love with makeup artistry, and here I am, fulfilling my dreams!"

Aimee Balcarcel

Master Makeup Artistry / Skincare

"My [current] career path is working for a bank. But that doesn’t always fulfill me, so I chose to enroll in QC's makeup courses to follow my dreams!"

Manpreet Kaur Rai

Master Makeup Artistry

"Bizarrely, my career has been in IT - first In financial services, and now in retail. [But] I’ve always had a passion for makeup!"

Sandra Gabriela

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop

"I have been working in the childcare field for over 16 years, but I’ve been passionate for makeup since I was young. Unfortunately, in the town that I live in, there are no schools to study this field. But when I found QC and their makeup courses, I automatically enrolled - and my passion for makeup came back even stronger!"

Veronika Kelle

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop / Special FX Makeup

QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador

"For 15 years, I managed my own model agency, for which I organized fashion shows and beauty contests. I enjoyed working with models, designers, and photographers. During that time, I fell in love with makeup artistry and decided to become a makeup artist. Luckily, I found the QC Makeup Academy, whose makeup courses have helped me to change career paths and make my dreams come true!"

Daniela Kolehouse

Master Makeup Artistry

"After 8 years of working as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist in the pharmaceutical industry, I changed my life and work path. I moved to a different country and decided to follow my passion: to start a career in makeup!"

Joy Gonzalez

Master Makeup Artistry

"Before QC, I was working as an Account Manager, doing inside sales and accounting. For the last 9 years, I have been a stay-at-home mom, but I have always wanted to work as a makeup artist!"

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I’ve been a dental nurse for over 10 years now. I originally chose this career because I wanted to help people. That being said, my main passion is getting creative. That’s always been the one thing I actually enjoyed and felt truly good at.
When I was 7-years-old, I really wanted to become a hairdresser. Unfortunately, I never followed this career path, as I suffered from a mental health condition known as Selective Mutism. I was unable to talk in certain situations and/or with certain people, due to severe anxiety. I eventually started to talk in my teenage years, but I was extremely quiet. Because of this, I convinced myself that a career in hair and beauty was not the path for me, since I didn’t know if I’d be able to talk to clients.
Instead, I chose to go into art college. I didn’t enjoy this much, though, as I wasn’t really interested in modern art. My passion was more geared towards painting nice watercolor pictures of animals, or other things that allowed me to feel inspired and apply myself in a way that made me happy.

Why did you decide to pursue makeup training and become a professional MUA?

There came a point when I decided that I was finally ready to follow my dreams. I chose makeup artistry because it’s similar to painting. You get to work with colors and brushes, and create art.
When I first started putting makeup on at school, I received many compliments about how I looked. Being extremely shy, this was such a boost of confidence! I would like to think I help to make my clients feel just as good about themselves, and give them the confidence to face the world.

How would you describe your makeup style? Do you have a particular niche?

I think my makeup style is very influenced by the 1960’s. I’ve always been drawn to that era of fashion and makeup. I particularly like the look of bold eye makeup paired with nude lips.

You draw on classic techniques to create more elaborate, unique makeup looks. Which specific classic techniques would you consider to be the most important ones to learn in professional makeup training?

I think all the classic techniques are equally important! For example, through my makeup training, I discovered how important it is to have a good primer for BOTH the eye lids and the face, in order to create flawless, long-lasting makeup.

Another very important technique is to go in with a light hand and build the product using sheen layers. It’s so much easier to build towards the final look, rather than having to remove makeup if you’ve gone in too heavy-handed .

Your talent for intricate eye makeup looks is incredible! What would you say your favorite eye makeup look to create is, and why?

I would say my favorite eye make up look is creating a dark, smoky eye. It looks so sultry! I definitely enjoy getting carried away with the blending brush. I also love creating classic cat liner looks. It’s taken me a long time to master the symmetry, but every time I get a little bit closer, it’s SO satisfying!

You’re very active on QC Makeup Academy’s Virtual Classroom. What do you consider to be the most beneficial part of being a member of this Facebook group?

There are a LOT of benefits to being a member of the Virtual Classroom! Particularly, I really enjoy the exclusive advice, tips, and free webinars available to us.

On top of that, it’s nice to feel a part of something, and with QC, it’s definitely a sense of community. I get to be alongside other people who have the same passion for makeup as I do! I’ve felt so supported from the other members, and it’s so lovely to see Nathan Johnson so active on the page, too!

You’re in the process of building up your very own makeup artist business. So far, what’s been the most challenging part of launching your own business, and how are you working to overcome it?

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, I have not been able to get set up and promote my business yet. However, in the UK, we’ve recently been given the green light to work as makeup artists again.

Now that I can safely get back into the game, my plan is to start building a portfolio of my work on Instagram, as well as create a new website. In fact, I have taken QC’s Pro Makeup Workshop in order to advance my skills and to show my applications on these sites!

You recently graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. Since earning your certification, how has your makeup training helped you in your professional career?

My makeup training and certification have given me the knowledge I need to confidently provide a professional makeup service to clients!

What ONE piece of advice would you give aspiring makeup artists who are considering online school to receive their makeup training?

Do your homework in finding a reputable course provider! There are a lot of shady schools out there, but the RIGHT one will help you truly make a name for yourself in the beauty industry!

What made you want to enroll in online makeup school, and why did you ultimately choose QC Makeup Academy?

I did originally look at attending in-person classes, but I realized that my work commitments wouldn’t make that possible. So, I started to look into online courses, and that’s when I came across QC Makeup Academy.

I’ll admit: I was skeptical about it to begin with, as I’ve been stung in the past by terrible online “courses” from different “schools”. But in my research, I quickly found that this makeup school seemed the most reputable, with the most genuine reviews.

Also, when I reached out with questions via email, the Student Support Specialist team were very hands-on and answered every query very quickly. I decided to take the plunge and enroll in the course, and do not regret it at all!

Is there any particular makeup technique you’re currently working on perfecting?

I’m still working at improving my symmetry, particularly when using bold lip colors.

What’s in store for you and your makeup business in the next year?

In the next year, I hope to have built a website that advertises for both bridal and special occasion makeup applications. I’ve also enrolled in QC’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop, so that I can eventually offer this advanced service to clients as well, once I have mastered it.

Finally: you’re stuck on an island, and can only have one makeup OR skincare product with you! What do you choose, and why?

I think I would have to choose a beauty balm with SPF in it. That way, I’m protecting my skin from sun damage – while also having moisturized, flawless-looking skin!

Back to School season is here, so it’s time to start YOUR professional makeup training! Until September 4th, enroll in QC’s internationally leading Master Makeup Artistry course today and we’ll give you ANY Advanced Course for FREE!

My Career as a Makeup Artist in the Film Industry

By Education, From the Experts, Student Ambassador No Comments

Caroline Edwards is a QC Makeup Academy Ambassador, as well as a current student in both our Master Makeup Artistry Course and Portfolio Development Workshop. She is the proud founder of her very own MUA business, specializing in makeup for film and television, Special FX, and personalized services. Today, Caroline discusses her career as a makeup artist in the film industry – and why her professional training with QC aided in her success!

Having the courage to follow your dreams, as well as your heart, is one of the most daunting experiences. But it’s also the most rewarding.

In terms of my career as a makeup artist, you might be wondering, how did my journey even start? It was quite simple, really. QC Makeup Academy kept popping up on social media feeds. Every time I saw it, I looked deeper and deeper into the school and their training. I was worried it couldn’t possibly be as good as it seemed. After all, you have to be careful with what you trust online these days.

But the truth is, I had no reason to worry. The more I learned about QC Makeup Academy, the more I was desperate to join!

Online vs. In-Person Training

You see, I really wanted to learn how to do makeup the proper way, but my options were limited. Online schooling was my only option, due to my personal schedule. In-person makeup courses were out of the question. I’m a full-time mother, responsible for looking after my son who has special needs. I needed to be available to him, as all of his schooling and care needs are done from home.

But while I couldn’t necessarily leave the house in order to pursue makeup training, I’d realized that during the times when my son was getting home-schooled, I could also use that time to get a solid education from the comfort of my own home!

A major perk to QC’s online courses is that there is no pressure; no deadlines. I could take my training at my own pace, and work towards my career as a makeup artist on my own terms. So, I decided to enroll! I made myself a promise that I would read my texts daily, and devote at least 10 minutes a day top hands-on practice.

I’ll admit, I always try to go above and beyond when it comes to my studies. Since it’s something I’m truly passionate about, I find that I’m like a sponge, soaking it all up. Once I started, I couldn’t get enough! All of my spare time became dedicated to makeup.

Optimal Learning with QC

The thing about trying to perfect your craft is that you need to go into it knowing you’re never actually going to perfect it. But that’s part of the excitement! I’m fully aware that I will never know everything, and that’s part of what pushes me to want to keep learning. There will always be something new to master. QC Makeup Academy engages you; sparking this fiery passion from the very start.

The course materials are well thought-out and very detailed. There are plenty of texts and videos to help mix up your learning experience. I love that I can re-read (or re-watch) anything at anytime, for as many times as I like. For this reason alone, I believe I’ve learned so much more than I would have in a physical setting.

Alongside this, the community I’ve become a part of has been invaluable. Particularly, the chance to network with my tutor, Nathan Johnson, as well as other QC students and grads. Honestly, I don’t think I could get better support anywhere else if I tried!

For example, QC has a Virtual Classroom where the QC community can get together, discuss the industry, and support each other. Everyone’s so eager and willing to provide helpful feedback and cheer you on in your journey!

The feedback you’ll receive from QC’s tutors will be personalized and tailored to your own work. It’s never sugar-coated, but it’s always beneficial. Your instructor will really make you think about your work. Some questions I’ve been asked by my tutor included:

  • Why are you applying a certain product?
  • What are you hoping to achieve by applying that product, in the way that you did?
  • What steps are you taking to achieve proper symmetry? Etc.

Your makeup education will train your eye, and teach you how to look at every fine detail. Nothing is off-limits! This is where the ultimate distinction is: a good school will teach you how to apply makeup. A great school will go one step further, by teaching you to understand why you apply makeup the way you do. This the true secret to successfully launching a career as a makeup artist, and making a name for yourself that will last for years to come!

So, would I recommend QC Makeup Academy? Without a doubt!

Thanks to my training here, I’ve since been able to start my very own bridal business. I’m proud to say that this business has so far garnered a lot of success! On top of that, through my personal network, I was able to branch out into the film and television industry, too!

Taking My Career as a Makeup Artist to the Big Screen

Thanks to a friend, I was offered the chance to work on a filmset as a makeup artist for a day. I don’t believe this would have been possible without my fantastic training from QC Makeup Academy. I can’t even describe for you what that opportunity felt like. It was the most incredible day!

I got to see how a movie is put together, and let me tell you: the amount of cast and crew involved for a single project is downright insane. As part of my role that day, I was given a set number of cast members to work on. It was my job to do both their hair and makeup.

In order to know the kind of hair and makeup that was expected of me, I was provided with a brief, which I had to follow closely. Once I finished with each cast member, they were then checked over by the head of makeup. Once given the green light, they were good to go to set. While the actual filming was taking place, I had to stay extremely quiet and remain on standby, in case any checks or touch-ups were needed.

Sometimes, though, a small opportunity can actually open the door to a much larger one! As it so happened, what was supposed to only be a single day of work turned into me staying on with this film for an entire year!

The film itself is a rather harrowing story, set in Victorian times and based on a true story. Feel free to learn more about it on Instagram, if you’re interested!

Thanks to my professional training and this unique opportunity, I’ve since discovered my niche. I have found that my career as a makeup artist is being geared towards the film industry. Moving forward, this is where I’ve decided I want to stay and focus my efforts.

Food for Thought

As a parting note, I just want to take a moment to say anything is possible for you. It doesn’t matter what your age, gender, background, or other commitments are. If you have an interest or passion for this craft, you CAN have a career as a makeup artist. This is an industry that’ll never be too full of talent. There will always be room for you, if you make room for it.

On that note, I urge you to join QC Makeup Academy. My experience with QC has set me up for the most amazing journey, and I know it can do the same for you. So, get that classical training under your belt, and chase those dreams. They are waiting for you!

Tip #1: How to buy the RIGHT powder product for your skin!

“When it comes to eyeshadows, blushes, and all other powder products, remember to try before you buy! Sample them on the back of your arm, the top of your hand… Because the pigment may look incredibly rich in the package, but that doesn’t mean it’s how it’s going to read on the skin. That tip will save you a LOT of money!”

Tip #2: Don’t forget to catch dark circles!

“Remember: dark circles are sneaky! Not only do we get them right [under the inner corners of our eyes], they also pop out [in the outer corners] and [above the inner corners]. If you want your clients to look incredibly alert, crisp, gorgeous, lifted, and awake, don’t forget those stubborn, sneaky areas!”

Tip #4: How to get the BEST lashes with mascara!

“For the absolute luscious and thickest lashes, apply mascara to both the bottom and top of the lash. Here’s a little trick: [on the] top of the lash, set it on, curl it in, and it’ll twist the lashes in [like it would] the final curl at the end of a blowout; lifting and opening the eyes.

[Then] place it right below the lower lash line. Give it a shimmy to add depth to those lashes, and then pull it right through. You’ll have long, beautiful lashes, coated root to tip, and they will look like a million bucks!”

Tip #7: The SECRET of proper makeup education!

“There’s a huge misconception that makeup is all unrestrained creativity; “I’m expressing myself constantly – I’m an ARTIST!”

Well, there is truth to that, of course, if you’re working on yourself or have full control over a photoshoot. But 90 or more percent of the time in the real world of makeup, you are a conduit for someone else’s desire – whether it be the bride, the creative director, right?

The only way you can do that is NOT by having memorized the looks. It’s by understanding the classic techniques, and being able to assemble them to meet the needs of the person who’s hired you. That’s the secret of education.”

Stay tuned for future installments of this series, where we’ll continue to compile and share Nathan’s educational and practical ‘Tuesday Tips’. Learning makeup has never been this exciting! ❤️️

Industry Spotlight: Charlotte Ravet

By Featured, Industry Spotlight No Comments

After completing a diploma of history of arts at La Sorbonne University in Paris, Charlotte Ravet decided to follow her true passion. After signing up for makeup artist classes, she began studying the craft. The techniques learned from celebrity makeup artists, combined with her passion for drawing and painting, led her to develop a unique method of application for corrective and artistic makeup.

Her natural gifts didn’t go unnoticed. Charlotte’s talents were in high demand as she worked for major European television stations, as well as on celebrities. Robbie Williams, the cast of the hit TV show Glee, and presenters of major events (such as Paris fashion week) are just a few of her many notable clients over the years. She also began presenting live seminars at L’Oréal Paris!

In 2014, Charlotte decided to open her career internationally, and moved to Australia. It was here that she began collaborating with top Australian photographers. Her innovative versatility was shared with the world through:

  • Advertising campaigns
  • Fashion events
  • Editorial prints
  • Music videos
  • Working with some of Australia’s most prominent faces (i.e. Simon Baker, Stephanie Claire Smith, etc.)
  • And so much more!

She has developed educational programs as a leading brand consultant, and has even created her own masterclasses for professional makeup artists! In 2018, Charlotte was awarded Best Makeup Educator for the Australian Makeup Industry Awards. Throughout her career, Charlotte has been nominated for and won countless other awards. Truly, they are all a testament to her skills.

After becoming the international makeup artist and retail education representative for the brand, By Terry, Charlotte now shares her MUA career between France and Australia. Professionalism, vibrancy, and outstanding skill have made Charlotte Ravet a sought-out industry expert by professionals and students alike!

Let’s learn more about Charlotte!

1. Where did your love of makeup come from? When (and why) did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I’ve always had a passion for art and drawing. My dream was originally to become a costume designer, or an archaeologist. After completing my Bachelor of History of Art, I realized that what I actually needed to do was be able to create with my hands. I was looking to learn a skill; something that would allow me to travel and live different experiences every day.

The idea of becoming a makeup artist came naturally. I didn’t know much about the industry before I started looking into it. Makeup artists weren’t as popular then as they are now. I visited a few academies, signed up for makeup artist classes, worked as dishwasher to pay for my studies, and never looked back!

I quickly became passionate about makeup as I was learning it. I had the feeling that what I was seeing or drawing on paper was something I could actually create on faces. I had an amazing makeup trainer. They offered exceptional techniques that were based on measuring face proportions, and creating a full face makeup look using only primary colors. Once you master these techniques, you can pretty much do anything!

2. Tell us about your makeup business, and the kinds of services you offer!

Well… I feel like I’ve done a 100 different jobs centering around being a makeup artist. This what is fantastic about having a skill – it opens up so many more doors for you than just job opportunities!

I started by doing makeup in the TV industry, as well as location shoots in Paris and across Europe. Then I had the opportunity to work with major fashion designers – such as Prada and MiuMiu – as the head of makeup for their private events in Paris. From there, I decided to learn English in order to elevate my career to an international level.

Once I’d moved to Australia, I started working for private clients. I worked hard to develop my professional network by getting involved in various productions and fashion projects. I also started teaching for academies. I’ve imported and developed a professional makeup brand through masterclasses, which quickly became popular. In fact, I was granted the title of ‘Makeup Educator of the Year’ back in 2018!

I know also work for the brand, By Terry, and am responsible for developing the educational content, delivering training for the brand, and illustrating/creating different looks.

These days, I’ve also developed a love for creative makeup, and want to focus on this type of work for now. I feel I have still so much to learn and explore!

3. You’ve done a lot of editorial work over the years. Got any tips for aspiring makeup artists who are interested in specializing in this field?

My main recommendation would be to plan ahead! It might take time to earn money as an editorial makeup artist. Take part in stylized photoshoots. The most creative projects are rarely the ones we’re paid for – but they show off our skills to potential clients!

Magazine companies often don’t pay much for a creative series, but getting yourself published in a renowned fashion magazine is one of the best ways to advertise your work. It also helps to keep up with current trends. Explore new challenges and never stop searching for new inspiration!

When I do an editorial shoot, it’s not work – it’s a passion. I’m pretty sure a lot of makeup artists would tell you the same thing.

4. Why do you feel that makeup artist classes are critical to becoming a successful MUA?

Professional training is the single most effective way to learn how to apply makeup properly – and for ALL types of work!

Without the right makeup education, you can be an amazing artist in one area, sure. But if you lack the skills in every other area of makeup artistry and don’t understand basic makeup theory and techniques, you’ll have a much smaller opportunity for real success.

Don’t limit yourself!

5. What are 3 secrets to your personal success as a makeup artist?

First, always be professional! I want all of my clients to be extremely satisfied with my work. It’s important that I never fail to leave a good impression.

Second: find the right balance between relying on proper techniques vs. your creativity. Personally, I love breaking down a makeup plan and  searching for what’s working (or not working) in an image. Being creative is about discovering this fine line between what’s technically impressive, but also visually beautiful.

It’s sometimes hard to explain. As an educator, I can teach techniques, but I can’t teach taste. Creativity can only come from within the individual themselves.

And third: never convince yourself that you don’t still have room to keep learning. This is what keeps me going. Despite how awful COVID-19 has been, this year has also helped to me pause, think about where I was, and figure out what I want to do going forward.

I’ve looked at all my work, identified where I want to improve, and planned out which new skills I want to learn. Part of being an artist is being humble. You are never going to master your craft 100% – and that’s okay! Think of it as a never-ending opportunity to expand your skills and gain new knowledge.

There will ALWAYS be something we can learn. As a makeup artist, I feel it’s really important to know this.

6. For all the aspiring MUAs out there, what are your top 5 tips for getting started?

  1. Be careful with hygiene! Especially now more than ever, following rules to keep both your client and yourself safe is a must.
  2. Being a makeup artist requires hard work! Yes, you can be passionate about makeup – but if you choose it as a career, it’s a job just like any other. You’ll get what you put into it. So, if you aren’t willing to give it your all, it’s probably not the career for you.
  3. Look after your network and choose your connections wisely! You’ll meet lot of people, especially as a freelancer. Avoid time-wasters. Learn who these people are, the kind of work they do, and their reputation within the industry. Always keep a professional focus and set the desired outcome when building your network.
  4. Don’t freak out if there are sometimes gaps between jobs! This happens to all of us, trust me. Work can sometimes take time to come. Try not to take it personally or be too hard on yourself. That being said, don’t just sit around and wait for work to come to you either. Instead, use this downtime as an opportunity to focus on your marketing strategies, learning new techniques, enrolling in makeup artist classes, etc.
  5. Always keep learning! I know I mentioned this already, but believe me, it really is that crucial! Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned MUA, you’re never going to know everything. The moment you trick yourself into thinking you do is the moment your success will start to plateau.

7. Finally, tell us 3 surprising things about yourself!

  1. I hate doing makeup on myself! I can spend maybe 5 minutes on myself, but I find it difficult to get creative. I tried doing more makeup on myself during lock-down but I simply have no patience doing something on my own face!
  2. Since I took makeup artist classes and completed my diploma, I’ve ALWAYS done makeup artistry full-time. I’ve never needed a second job on the side. I consider myself very lucky to be able to say this.
  3. I have earned many awards, but the hardest competition I’ve ever had to face was actually for my Visa. There are only 200 Distinguished Talent Visas granted worldwide per year – and this accounts for sport, research, and art categories combined! I had to submit a very long application. In the end, though, I was granted it, which allowed me to have permanent residency in Australia.
