Your Makeup Artist Kit: 5 Budget-Friendly Tips

By Your Makeup Career No Comments

As an MUA, your professional makeup artist kit is critical to your career. After all, it contains all of the tools you need to do your job! As a rule of thumb: sturdy, reliable products are always the way to go. An easy way to tarnish your reputation pretty quickly is to use sub-par cosmetics on your clients – and we know you don’t want that!

This means that one way or another, you’re going to have to invest in your kit.

Now this is all fine and dandy, but what if you’re just starting out and don’t have the biggest budget just yet? While putting money into your professional kit comes with the territory of being a makeup artist, you shouldn’t have to go broke just to get your career off the ground!

Luckily, there are plenty of cost-effective ways you can build your makeup artist kit nowadays. Let’s take a look at 5 examples…

makeup artist products on table

5 Budget-Friendly Ways to Build Your Makeup Artist Kit

1. Know Your Game Plan

This is a logical place to start. It’s important for you to go into your career with a clear understanding of what you want to offer clients. For instance, do you have a specific area of makeup artistry that you wish to focus on (such as bridal, SFX, editorial, etc.)? Do you know who your target clientele is?

Knowing the services you plan to provide will have a direct impact on the type of makeup artist kit you’ll need to put together.

2. Focus on the Fundamentals

From Google ads and social media influencers, to everything in-between, we’re constantly being shown the latest, hottest cosmetics that we supposedly ‘need’ to have in your makeup artist kit. But the truth is, most of these products aren’t necessary. They’ll simply take up valuable room in your makeup kit and burn an unneeded hole in your wallet.

If you’re building your professional makeup kit on a budget, remember to stick to the fundamental tools and products you’ll actually need. While these fundamentals may change, depending on who you ask, in our opinion, the must-have items for your kit should include:

  • A set of brushes
  • A beauty blender
  • Primer
  • Foundation (both liquid and powder)
  • Concealer
  • Bronzer and highlighter
  • A brow pencil
  • Blush
  • Liquid eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • One eyeshadow palette
  • Lipstick and lip gloss
  • Setting spray
  • False lashes and lash glue
  • A travel-friendly case
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Face masks

Of course, you can absolutely add to this list as your career grows and you have more funds to do so. But when first starting out, you can still put together a solid makeup artist kit with these products alone.

3. Invest in Multipurpose Products

Not all makeup can be used for more than its intended purpose, but a lot of products can be. Shop around and research into cosmetics that are multifunctional. Brushes, for example, can be used to apply product to all sorts of different areas of the face. Similarly, plenty of lip colors can be used as blush, and certain eyeshadow colors can easily double as a highlighter.

The key is to know how to creatively use these products correctly. Proper training will teach you how to do exactly that. Once you know how to effectively adapt a makeup product in such a way, you can cut down on your spending by stocking your makeup artist kit with items that specifically serve dual (or more) purposes.

4. Remember: Quality over Quantity

Buying a million brushes is basically throwing money to the wind if they’re not all of economical quality. Sure, it can seem like a good budgeting option to purchase a cheap kit of 30+ brushes. But if they’re constantly shedding and can’t hold products well, you’re just going to wind up buying more brushes before you know it.

The same can be said for massive contour and/or eyeshadow pallets. While you might be inclined to spend little money for a large array of different colors and selections, this could be a poor choice. Cheap eye and face palettes can often mean low-grade ingredients. This makes for a lousy product that falls apart easily, doesn’t apply well, or is generally unhealthy for your client’s skin.

makeup artist brushes on table

While it’s always cost-effective to buy in bulk (i.e. buying pallets versus individual products), all we’re saying is to choose your products carefully. Sometimes, ‘buying in bulk’ means investing in one reputable set of brushes, one reliable eyeshadow palette of 10 or less colors, etc.

Often, that’ll be all you’ll actually need!

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Shop at the Drugstore

There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting your makeup artist kit with a few drugstore brands in the mix. In the beginning, you’re going to be focusing on gaining experience and refining your skills. While continuing your hands-on practice shouldn’t be done with terrible products, it also doesn’t require the most expensive products either.

Fact is, there are tons of drugstore brands that work just as well (or nearly as well) as their pricier counterparts. What truly matters is the performance of that product.

So, do your research! Read what others have to say, and see what sort of cheaper brands offer cosmetics that perform excellently. At the same time, avoid unnecessary spending by researching into the types of makeup and skincare products you shouldn’t be cutting costs for.

At the end of the day, you can build your makeup artist kit in a way that’s both cost-effective and quality-focused. This should be your top priority. Take the time to research into your options, never rush into any decisions, and always invest your money into smart products.

So long as you do that, your professional makeup kit will serve you well as you build a solid, reputable career!

QC Graduate Katie Stegeman’s Experience with the Virtual Makeup Training Course

Katie Stegeman is a professional makeup artist and the proud owner of Katie Stegeman Beauty. She has graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course and is currently a student in 6 other QC courses. (Wow!)

Recently, Katie also completed our Virtual Makeup Training and was kind enough to share her experience with the program. Here’s what Katie had to say!

makeup training graduate, Katie Stegeman

Why did you enroll in the Virtual Makeup Training Course?

“I enrolled in the Virtual Makeup Course because I felt like now more than ever is the time to learn how to do virtual services well. I think that virtual makeup and beauty services will continue to be valuable long after the pandemic!

Expanding my client reach was also so important to me. Our current world is so technologically-based, but certain services can sometimes be hard to translate to an online platform. But as makeup artists, we do not necessarily have to be hands-on all the time.

The internet has evolved our careers! I really wanted to feel confident in the services I was presenting to my clients, and have professional training behind me so I could do this well.”

What valuable lessons did this course teach you?

“Seeing an actual virtual consultation, and being provided with worksheets and informative research, made all the difference in understanding how to effectively offer virtual makeup and skincare services!

The course walks you through what you’d actually have to do to be extremely successful at virtual consultations. That alone has given me so much more courage and understanding in terms of what I need to do in order to really be great at these services.”

makeup artist looking at laptop and on phone call

In what ways do you feel this additional training will help strengthen your career and/or business as a professional makeup artist?

“Adding this Virtual Makeup Training Course to my makeup and skincare courses could not have been a better choice! I wanted to try and branch out into online skincare and makeup services, but I was not exactly sure how to go about it. So, this course was perfect!”

How does the training provided in this course better prepare you to succeed as a makeup artist during the global pandemic, despite the limitations of social distancing?

“With the current global pandemic, I wanted to be able to still do what I was passionate about. But as I said, I wasn’t exactly sure how to start. Not being able to physically meet with people can absolutely cause makeup artists to struggle to find clients.

Virtual makeup training allows us to offer alternatives! We can conduct online consultations and services with total confidence, and in a way that keeps everyone safe.”

Why would you recommend QC’s Virtual Makeup Training Course to other aspiring makeup artists?

“Having graduated from this course, I feel like I have the knowledge to confidently offer online services now. For new makeup artists who want to find a way to adapt their business to an online platform, there is a lot of value to be found in this course. QC Makeup Academy’s Virtual Makeup Training is a MUST!”

makeup artist certification graduate, maryam bahji

Graduate Feature: Maryam Bahji

By Uncategorized 2 Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Maryam Bahji! I’m currently a 20-year-old makeup artist located in Victoria, BC, Canada. I am currently studying Business Marketing in college, while growing my own entrepreneurial business. I started my makeup artistry business when I had just turned 18 (fresh out of high school). That was just over 2 years ago, and so far, I have come a long way!

I’ve worked with many different photographers. I’ve been published in two magazines, and I’ve worked on countless brides. It’s safe to say that I have found my passion, hobby, and career all in one! I am originally from Iran, but I was born and raised in Qatar, and moved to Canada when I was 11.

I speak 4 languages: Farsi, Arabic, English, and Urdu. I love being active, and have been an avid gym-goer since I was 12. I’ve been lifting weights ever since! Going to the gym has boosted my confidence drastically, which has positively impacted my life. I also really love dogs! I have a Chihuahua miniature pin mix named Mocca. She has brought so much joy into my life since I got her!

Why did you decide to get your makeup artist certification and pursue makeup professionally?

For as long as I can remember, I have tried to find a way to make others happy. I tried out different methods, but I never stuck to any of them, as I had no passion for them. I did not want to forget my motive: “making people happy”. Therefore, I thought to myself, ‘What is something that I can do to bring joy to others, that I also enjoy at the same time?’

I have always had a passion for makeup. It was the only talent that I was able to master. The moment that I realized I could turn my passion into a career – and also realized that this profession is all about boosting others’ confidence and bringing smiles to people’s faces – I instantly made it happen. I haven’t looked back since!

Not a day goes by where I am doing someone’s makeup and it feels like a “job” to me. I love getting to spend time with people on the biggest days of their lives. I take pride and honor in that! I believe that the career I have chosen is such a great motivation that I have in my life. It constantly pushes me to progress, try harder, and do better in everything that I come across.

How would you describe your makeup style?

The areas where I excel and get most creative would definitely have to be dramatic makeup. Examples of these would be:

Why did you choose to pursue your professional makeup artist certification online, instead of in-person?

The reason I chose online makeup training is because I am a person with a really busy schedule. I’m taking 6 classes at college, I have a part-time job, and I also have a makeup business to run.

I needed to find a way where I could fit makeup school into my timetable, as I really wanted to become a certified artist. That was when I found QC Makeup Academy, and decided to take the opportunity after doing research into the school.

Ultimately, what made you decide to earn your makeup artist certification with QC Makeup Academy?

The reason I enrolled with QC Makeup Academy was because I found nothing but great reviews about the school! Their prices are very reasonable, and they give you an incredible amount of time to finish your courses (leaving you with very little stress to worry about)!

You’ve graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. What was the most valuable part of this program for you and why?

The most valuable thing that I took away from that course is being able to present myself as a certified makeup artist. I believe it was what I needed in order to be able to carry myself higher than I already was. It has given me a feeling of professionalism, and I really love that!

You’re also currently enrolled in QC’s Skincare Course with celebrity MUA and skin consultant, Nathan Johnson. How are you enjoying this course so far? How is this additional training adding to your overall skill-set as a makeup artist?

I believe that one of the key things that makes a makeup artist an incredible and outstanding one is a thorough understanding of how their client’s skin works. They need to be able to know which products should be used for the best results, based on the client’s individual needs.

I don’t think I’ll be getting into the skincare business, but I wanted to make sure that I am educated as a makeup artist. This course is definitely giving me that boost! It allows me to speak with confidence. I am a lot more knowledgeable about certain products, ingredients, and skin types.

On your Instagram, you state that the goal of your business is “enhancement of natural beauty”. Can you elaborate on this?

This goal means a lot to me, and it’s the reason why I made it my business motto! I want all of my clients to know that they are already beautiful, internally and externally. They do not need makeup to make them more beautiful.

Instead, I want them to understand that makeup is a tool that can help them express how they feel, and at the same time, enhance their natural features. It’s not a tool that will lower their confidence about themselves as soon as they wash it off.

You specialize in both engagement/bridal services and South Asian bridal services. For those interested in pursuing the same path, in what ways are these two specialties similar? In what ways are they different?

Understanding culture is key to understanding how the makeup industry works. Every culture celebrates weddings differently; with different styles of makeup, dressing, and how their events are organized.

The similarity between normal bridal services and South Asian bridal services is that they are both a celebration of the start of a new chapter in life! However, the style of makeup that goes into each one is incredibly different. That’s simply due to the culture differences! One prefers simple, elegant, and natural makeup for their wedding. On the other hand, the other culture prefers incredible, dramatic makeup!

You also teach makeup lessons. Have you started providing virtual makeup lessons since social distancing went into effect? If so, how has that been going for you?

I have definitely considered providing online makeup lessons. However, I believe that it would be a much better idea if I grew my following and popularity first, before providing lessons online. When the time comes for that, I’d like to be qualified enough to provide workshops, as well as one-on-one virtual classes for people all around the world.

This goal is something that requires a lot of planning. I do not want to launch a service without making sure it is the best I can provide for my clients!

What has been the proudest moment in your makeup career (so far)?

Every opportunity that goes by makes me incredibly proud. The fact that I get to spend the happiest moments of people lives with them (such as engagements and weddings), and having such an important role on that day, gives me so much joy! As far as accomplishments go, I have been published in 2 magazines already, and that has made me incredibly proud. It’s motivated me to keep pushing, and to keep excelling in what I do best!

What’s on the horizon for your Marmari Beauty in 2021 and beyond?

In 2021, if the world has gone through the pandemic successfully, I plan to start travelling and exploring all the different cultures and styles of makeup around the world. As I said, I believe culture is a substantial part of being a successful makeup artist. To be able to understand the various styles that my clients want is very important.

Travelling for makeup will give me a better sense of understanding about the beauty industry, worldwide. On top of that, going all around the world will also give me more opportunities. It’ll allow me to build my connections with people from all over the globe! I do want to become a worldwide makeup artist eventually, and to reach that goal, I have to take the first step and start!

Finally: in your opinion, as a makeup artist, what is your definition of “success”?

My definition of “success” in the makeup industry is working without the feeling of being at work.

To me, success is about enjoying life. This life is incredibly short, and there is no time to waste being unhappy all the time. Makeup was my hobby, and I turned it into a career. For the rest of my life, I know that not a day will go by where I’ll be miserable getting out of bed, or having to go to work.

Every day, I choose to get up and to do what makes me happy! I get to know that I am also making others happy, too, and this keeps me going. To me, that is success!

I’ve learned the importance of symmetry, and how to apply classic makeup techniques on people with all different features. What’s really taught me is that practice makes perfect! There’s always something to learn and grow from. The learning never stops!"

online makeup classes graduate

Cheri Stevens

Master Makeup Artistry

"The #1 thing that I have learned from my online makeup classes at QC Makeup Academy is that less is definitely more! I am a mature student, and as I go through my learning, I love the simple, natural approach to applying makeup. This way, I can easily transition to TV and movie makeup!"

online makeup classes graduate

Delilah Alers-Kane

Master Makeup Artistry / Pro Makeup Workshop

How to Become a Makeup Artist: The Top 3 Do’s and Don’ts

By Your Makeup Career No Comments

These days, there are more aspiring makeup artists in the beauty industry than ever before. With the convenience of social media and online shopping, most people can begin trying to make a name for themselves without ever having to leave the house. But if you’re wondering how to become a makeup artist, then you need to know something very important:

A passion for makeup will not be enough to get your foot in the door.

A genuine love of the craft is essential, yes. But this alone won’t allow you to launch an actual career in the field – at least not very successfully, anyway. Think about it: if loving making were all it took to become a makeup artist, everyone and their grandmother would be working in this industry.

The fact is, there are additional skills you’ll absolutely need to have if you want this endeavor to be sustainable for the long-run. In order to best set yourself up for prosperity, we’ve compiled a list of the most important Do’s and Don’ts to follow throughout your journey.

Let’s check them out!

DO: Learn from a Real Makeup Expert

I don’t mean learning makeup from a YouTube influencer. This is not the same as a reputable makeup education. While plenty of online MUAs know their stuff, there are also just as many who don’t. Their technique might be incorrect. They may be very good at applying certain types of makeup to their own faces, they might also have no idea how to work on the face of another.

You, as an aspiring makeup artist, could unknowingly be picking up all the wrong habits.

The best and most effective way to learn proper technique, theory, and application is to train with a real-working industry professional. So, enroll in a course! Receiving a legitimate makeup education will mean that you’ll also earn an actual certification once you graduate. This is guaranteed to look great on your resume and increase your chances of booking clients in the future.

DON’T: Skimp on Business Training

If you truly want a life-long career as an MUA, then business training is a must. Perhaps you dream of being an entrepreneur and starting your very own business. Maybe your aspiration is to work at a makeup counter, or represent a major brand, or join a salon team. How can you do your best work if you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes?

notepad with 'start my own business' written on it

For instance, do you know how to do the following:

  • Conduct a client consultation?
  • Market and promote yourself, both online and in-person?
  • Define your target market?
  • Build a solid brand for yourself and your business?
  • Put together a strong portfolio?
  • Develop your own website?
  • Research into your various competition?
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times?
  • Write air-tight contracts?

If you’ve answered “no” to any of these questions, then business training will be your best friend!

DO: Get as Much Experience as You Can

In the beginning, it may be difficult to find jobs with brand new clients. This is simply because you need to build your resume and portfolio first. Luckily, there are tons of ways you can do that!

In addition to practicing on yourself, find friends and family who would be willing to be your model. Try to find people of different ages and genders, who have different skin types and skin tones. It’s essential that you learn how to properly apply makeup on more than one type of face.

woman learning how to become a makeup artist by getting hands-on training on female model

Styled photoshoots and collaborations are another awesome option, too. Not only will you be refining your skills; you’ll also be actively building your network and potentially getting some really great material for your portfolio!

Lastly, never forget the value of continued learning. Even after you obtain a certification, there will always be more courses you can take, so you can add to your qualifications and discover new areas of the industry. The more training you get, the better you’re going to look in the eyes of potential clients!

DON’T: Have a Bad Attitude

In the beauty industry, a lousy attitude is one of the quickest ways to tank your career before it’s even started. Go into things with an open mind. Be willing to accept constructive criticism, always treat your clients with respect, embrace the fact that you’ll always have room to grow, and never assume that this job is an easy one.

If you’re perpetually radiating negativity, the people around you will notice. That will be the reputation you establish for yourself. Ask yourself: would YOU want to work with someone like that?

Remember, you’re doing this because you love it! Yes, being a makeup artist is challenging… but it’s also meant to be a lot of fun. So, enjoy the ride!

makeup products on black surface

DO: Invest in Your Makeup Products

To become a makeup artist, you’ll need to build a professional makeup kit to use when working with clients. While this won’t always come cheap, trust us: it’s worth the investment. Remember: you can build it as you grow. There’s no need for you to have absolutely everything right off the bat.

Start by creating a list of the must-have products you want in your makeup kit. Then research online and see what sort of prices you can buy them for. While certain products are worth the extra pennies, there are also plenty of cosmetics and tools that you can get for a lower price.

Want a seriously useful tip? There are tons of drugstore brands that are just as good as their expensive counterparts. For even more budget-friendly suggestions, check out this helpful article.

DON’T: Go into Anything Unprepared

This is just good life advice in general. But if you’re wondering how to become a makeup artist and find true success, this might be the most important lesson in this list!

woman making to do list

The more information you have, and the more legwork you put in, the better off you’ll be when the time comes to put things into action. For instance, make sure you do TONS of research before enrolling in any makeup courses. Ensure that the school in question is:

  • Properly accredited
  • Has positive reviews
  • Offers content-rich courses with plenty of hands-on training
  • Employs tutors who actually work within the industry

The same thing can be said about your professional makeup kit. Never invest in a product until you’ve read up on it, know its ingredients, and trust that it’ll be valuable to you.

Lastly, but just as importantly: always be as prepared as possible for any consultations and appointments you have with clients. Have all of your tools ready to go, and compile any and every question you’d like to ask them. As the professional, it’s your job to know what you’re doing. The last thing you want to do is give your client the impression that they’re working with an amateur.

If you’re serious about becoming a makeup artist, you have to be ready and willing to put in the work. Success doesn’t happen overnight. But with the right mindset and a strong work ethic, trust that success WILL find its way to you and your makeup business!

Become a makeup artist and earn your certification in as little as 3-6 months! Enroll today in any of QC Makeup Academy’s wide variety of internationally-leading online courses!

5 Rules for Naming Your Makeup Business

By Your Makeup Career No Comments

If you have dreams of becoming a professional MUA and launching your very own makeup business, then you’ve come to the right place! Chances are, you’ve already completed your professional training at a reputable makeup school, or are currently in the process of completing your course. (And if you aren’t? That’s the very first – and most important – place to start!)

Once you’ve earned your certification, your next goal is likely to start your very own business. This, of course, is an awesome idea. After all, who doesn’t dream of being their own boss? The thing is, starting a makeup business isn’t the kind of decision you should leap right into. It requires time, careful planning, and serious contemplation.

Logically, before you start any sort of business, you should begin by figuring out what you want to call it. For some, this can be a bit tricky. But with our handy tips, it doesn’t have to be! Let’s take a look at the basic essentials you need to consider when it comes to choosing a name for your makeup business.

makeup products on pink surface

First Thing’s First…

In order to know what you want your business to be called, you need to have a thorough understanding of what you want your business to be about. Take the time to really sit down and think about what you want your brand to be. Here are a few helpful questions to consider:

  • Do you specialize in any particular areas of makeup artistry (i.e. bridal, editorial, airbrush, SFX, etc.)?
  • Are your services catered to a specific demographic, or are they suitable for all ages, genders, etc.?
  • Do you intend to offer any additional services, such as: makeup lessons, hair or fashion styling, henna, writing for beauty blogs, etc.?
  • Do you have a unique niche that can help set you apart from the competition?
  • What is the overall mission of your business?
  • What do you want your company values to be?

Think about some of the makeup artists you really admire. Does anything automatically come to mind as soon as you think of them – such as a color, a sound, a feeling, etc.? What would you consider their brand to be? How do they achieve this? Is there anything they could be doing differently?

Now turn the spotlight back to your own makeup business. Ideally, how will you want the world to see you and your business? Are there certain emotions, colors, images, etc. that you’d like to be associated with your brand? If so, you might be able to work that into the name of your makeup business!

Create a Short List

Inspiration can be found everywhere, so don’t rush yourself to try and think up a business name at the drop of a hat. Instead, give yourself some time to look around, get inspired, and let the creative wheels turn in your head.

Once some promising ideas start to come to you, write them down! As the list grows, you can always go back, revise it, and narrow things back down. Once you’ve finalized your short list, rank the names in order of most to least favorite.

The exciting thing about getting to pick your own business name is that you can get as creative as you want! So, don’t hesitate to explore the furthest corners of your imagination. Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling:

  • Proper names
  • (Simple!) word games
  • Words in other languages
  • Synonyms
  • Clichés or popular phrases
  • Puns
  • Names from books, mythology, or other works of fiction

5 Rules for Naming Your Makeup Business

There are plenty of ways for a business name to miss the mark, so it’s important that you do your research.

Consider some of the most memorable business names you’ve come across throughout your life. What makes them stand out to you? Why do you like them so much? Does it appeal to the targeted audience? If so, how does it achieve that?

Here are 5 rules you should absolutely abide by when naming your own business:

1 – Be original, but be relevant.

The name of your makeup business shouldn’t be a carbon copy of some other business name. At the same time, it should be able to convey to potential clients a sense of what your business does/provides.

On that note, try to avoid business names like, “Makeup by [Insert Name]”. There are far too many MUAs with that sort of name. This can easily make it difficult for your business to really shine amongst its competitors.

2 – Be mindful of the spelling.

If your business name contains a commonly misspelled word, you’re increasing your chances of potential clients struggling to find you (especially online). Similarly, consider the scope of your makeup business as a whole.

Who is your target demographic? Do you intend to remain local, or do you want your business to go global? The wording you choose in your name has an impact on these factors.

3 – Don’t overcomplicate things.

Keep it simple! Short and snappy business names are easy to remember and fun to say. Longer business names can be a mouthful, and are likelier to be forgotten. This is definitely not the impact you want your business to make!

4 – Make it internet-friendly.

The ideal scenario here is that your website can read as “www.YourBusinessName.com”. If another makeup business has already registered that domain name, you’ll need to consider alternate routes. If your business name isn’t already a registered web domain, jump on that opportunity immediately!

5 – Register your name.

On that note, it’s critical that as soon as you’ve decided on the name of your makeup business (and it isn’t already registered with another company), you get it legally registered. That way, you own it. No one can take it from you!

Yes, there will be paperwork involved, but trust me, it’ll be worth it in the long run. Plus, you’ll also eliminate the chance of accidentally using someone else’s legally-owned business name (which can make for a potentially sticky situation down the road).

When it comes to starting up your own makeup business, choosing a strong, memorable name that properly reflects your brand is an essential step towards success. So, what are you waiting for? Start brainstorming!

QC makeup classes instructor, Nathan Johnson

From the incredible instruction he provides throughout QC’s online makeup classes, to the support he gives in the Virtual Classroom and the amazing monthly webinars he hosts – Nathan is the embodiment of a true beauty expert, whose makeup knowledge is only outmatched by the size of his heart!

Another way he goes above and beyond in his mission to enhance our students’ makeup classes and overall training is through his Tuesday Tips! Each week, Nathan films a short clip, in which he reveals useful tricks to help you better your makeup artistry skills. On Facebook especially, this segment – aptly called “Nathan’s Tuesday Tips” – had grown wildly popular!

In this monthly blog series, we gather these Tuesday Tips so we can share them with you here! Missed our past installments? No worries! Check out Part 1 here, and Part 2 here.

Today, we’ll take a look at another 7 of Nathan’s most valuable beauty hacks. Want to add to the knowledge gained in your makeup classes and improve your game? Then you don’t want to miss out on these gems!

Tip #1: The importance of classic makeup techniques!

“Classic makeup techniques are the bases for everything in makeup. If you truly master them, you’ll see that they can be shaped, shifted, [and] transformed to create anything in makeup – from the simplest, cleanest look, to the most dramatic and unseen look!

It’s all in the precision of those classic techniques, and when you know them, you can do anything.”

Tip #2: Why practice makes perfect!

“Not everybody gets everything in makeup on the first try. Sometimes, you’ve got to practice things again, and again, and again, and again. So, if something’s a little stubborn for you, DO it – again, and again, and again, and again!

Because once you get it, guess what? [It] never leaves you.”

Tip #3: How to lift your client’s eyes!

“Want to keep a client’s eye lifted? Imagine an invisible line, going from the corner of the eye to the end of the eyebrow. Be very careful about when you let any product go below that line. This will always lift!”

Tip #4: The importance of practicing makeup on paper!

“Remember: not all practice needs to be on a person! If you can master perfect symmetry and precision – with all the variations of eyeliners and lip liner – on paper, you will easily [and] drastically improve what you can do on a face.”

Tip #5: Why you should use an eyelash curler!

“Open, lifted lashes are a secret that keep your client looking awake and alert. So, don’t skip that eyelash curler.”

Tip #6: The secret to perfecting even eyeliner on loose eyelid skin!

“Is loose eyelid skin causing you to have bumpy, uneven eyeliner? Here’s a trick: tilt the head back, look down (eyes open to a little crack), and that will keep the eyelid skin super tight – allowing for a crisp, even application.

Want to keep it even easier? Use a soft pencil or a liquid, because it won’t grab the skin!”

Tip #7: The quickest, easiest way to refresh your look!

“Want a super fast way to refresh your look? Try changing the lip color! It changes everything in an instant.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a retired special education teacher. In my 33 years as an educator, I have taught students from ages 5 through 17, in multiple different settings. I have worked with students that have disabilities; ranging from learning disabled, autistic, speech/language disorders, and students with severe/profound multiple disabilities. I am also married and have 2 adult children.

Why did you decide to earn your makeup artist certification and become a professional MUA?

I have always been fascinated by the transformation that makeup techniques can make. Since my retirement, I am now able to devote my time and attention to studying and practicing my passion. I have a curiosity for makeup and all it can do!

How would you describe your makeup style?

I would define my makeup style as a natural, clean look. Most of my practicing has been on models with more mature skin, or on women who do not typically wear makeup.

It’s an awesome feeling to apply makeup, and explain what I’m using and what I am doing. To have the client be amazed at how they look with such little makeup applied is a wonderful moment. Unless I’m doing a fantasy or special effects look, my style can be summed up as: “less is more”.

You aced both your Master Makeup Artistry Course and your Special FX Makeup Course. Congratulations! Overall, how did you find the online learning process and the assistance you received from your instructors?

I was very excited to enroll, but also very anxious. The Mastery Makeup Artistry Course was my first ever online course. But I found that the Student Support Specialists are extremely helpful. I don’t know what I would have done without the help and support from Shannon, in particular.

The entire process of enrolling, getting started, accessing your course materials, and submitting your Units is all very clear. ALL of my instructors/tutors – Nathan Johnson, Michele Mulkey, Corianne Cowan, and Laurie Vukich – are amazing. They provide positive feedback, as well as advice and ways to improve your work. They push me to be the best makeup artist and hair stylist I can be!

What is it about special effects makeup that you find the most fascinating?

It is so fun! All makeup can transform you, but special effects makeup can add that extra bit of shock. It’s also very challenging making the effect look “real”, and not just applied for shock value. There are lots of subtleties which may seem simple, but are not. For example: adding 5 o’clock shadow to a man, adding a mustache or beard, and old age makeup are all very tricky.

You’re also currently on Unit C of QC’s Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you decide to include hair styling in your overall repertoire?

I chose to enroll in the Hair Styling Essentials Course to broaden my skill-set. Since the theater is a venue I hope to work more in, having hair and makeup skills will be an asset. I did the makeup for 2 community plays, and the directors had actually asked me if I also did hair. At the time, I did not – so I knew I needed to get hair styling training!

On top of the professional makeup you’ve done for community theatre productions, you’ve also been involve in a calendar shoot and a kids’ show. Can you tell us a little bit about these experiences?

I did the makeup for a community theater show called Calendar Girls. In addition to the show, they made a calendar to go along with the show, which I also did the makeup for. Other than practicing for my Course, this was my first “professional” experience. It was awesome. I had so much fun!

I had to teach myself how to apply a bald cap. (This was before I took the Special FX Makeup Course.) I also did some makeup and assisted a bit with hair for a community children’s show, Prince and Princesses. On top of that, I got to do some makeup applications for a local thrift store’s fashion show fundraiser.

I was supposed to do the makeup for the community show Little Women this past summer, but it’s been postponed due to the pandemic.

What did you choose to pursue your makeup artist certification through QC Makeup Academy?

Since my retirement, I’ve been able to devote my time and attention to studying makeup artistry. I browsed online an looked at the different online makeup schools, but QC Makeup Academy immediately caught my attention. I did my research, and decided to call and speak with someone.

I was anxious to begin an online class, having never taken one – especially in makeup, nonetheless! I spoke with Shannon a few times, and she was so encouraging and motivating. She stated that there was assistance whenever I needed it. I did need to call a couple of times… and she was right! Shannon and all of the online support staff are extremely positive and helpful.

Is there any particular makeup technique you’re currently working to improve?

Of course, all the time! But one skill that I need to practice a lot, in order to master its many beautiful techniques, is eyeliner. There are so many gorgeous looks, and so many different kinds of eyeliner makeup to choose from.

What’s on the horizon for you and your makeup career?

I want to continue my theater experiences, as well as participate in more community shows, fashion shows, and fundraisers. I was supposed to do a friend’s daughter’s wedding this June, but that unfortunately has been canceled.

I would also like to do makeup and hair for friends and special events. I would be very interested in volunteering for a group home for young adults with disabilities, and do their hair and makeup for special events (such as proms and dances).

Imagine: it’s Halloween, and you use your special effect makeup skills to turn yourself into ANY character you want. Which SFX look do you choose?

I have done a “zipper face” look for fun in the past, and it received a lot of positive feedback – including a lot of, “Eww!” “Yuck!” “Gross!”

So, I guess it looked pretty good. I also enjoy creating my own deep cuts with added extras, such as a large fish hook or insects.

Ambassador Feature: Paula Alleyne

By About the School, Student Ambassador No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Paula Alleyne. I am married, live in the wonderful Caribbean island of Barbados, and I decided to take makeup artistry more seriously within the last three years. It’s only when I started on my professional makeup journey that I realized my love for makeup actually began years ago.

When I was younger, I remember doing makeup on my neighbor. I loved being able to do something that helped boost her self esteem. I also always loved to read makeup books and fashion magazines, and I was absolutely enthralled with eye shadows.

As I became serious about makeup artistry, I became more selective of who I followed on social media. Once I knew that I wanted to only learn from the best, I decided I wanted to become professionally trained.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

The answer to this is two-fold:

  1. I wanted to develop my brand as a qualified makeup professional, and
  2. I didn’t want to just follow what everyone was doing on social media. Instead, I wanted to learn the actual techniques and proper education behind makeup application.

How would you describe your makeup style? Do you have a particular niche?

My makeup style is clean and classic. My niche is for persons who prefer natural enhancements of their features through makeup application.

You’ve recently become one of QC Makeup Academy’s Student Ambassadors. Congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about what your new role will entail?

As a Student Ambassador, my main responsibilities entail:

  • Encouraging new students who have enrolled in QC’s online makeup school
  • Providing support and encouragement within the Virtual Classroom on Facebook
  • Promoting QC Makeup Academy as an institution of quality learning
  • Creating high quality content, such as blog articles
  • Directing potential students who may have queries about QC’s online makeup school and educational process

Your makeup business specializes in editorial and bridal services. What is it about these areas of the beauty industry that appeal to you the most?

These areas appeal to me because they fit right into my style of natural, clean beauty!

What has been the most challenging (and the most rewarding) part of starting your own business?

Firstly, the most challenging part was being confident in my style. Due to social media, I observed that many persons loved the heavily applied makeup and heavily sculpted features. As a professional artist, I can create that look if needed. However, I prefer to enhance a person’s features – not transform it into something that’s not theirs.

The most rewarding is when clients request my services, and it’s because they want the natural enhancements, and they love the finished product!

How did your online makeup school training assist you in your journey of starting and running a successful MUA business?

Obtaining an education with QC Makeup Academy assisted in my journey in numerous ways:

  1. I became knowledgeable about makeup application techniques for various faces. Each client has their own unique skin tone, skin type, eye and facial shape, etc. Understanding these differences assists with providing an application that’s best suited for each individual.
  2. QC’s online makeup school has always promoted professionalism on the job, and this is a value which has greatly helped me in my interactions with clients. I always seek to maintain professionalism on the job. In fact, I’ve had many clients recognize and comment on this!
  3. QC Makeup Academy provides business insights for makeup artists, such as the development of contracts and business document templates. These customizable templates have proven incredibly useful in my own business transactions!

You graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry course with flying colors! Overall, how did you find the program?

I found the Master Makeup Artistry Course to be informative and interesting! I enjoyed learning all about makeup artistry in various fields such as film, theater, and SFX. The practical assignments focusing on SFX makeup were loads of fun!

How was your experience being tutored by QC executive instructor and celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson?

It was great! Having Nathan critique my work was such a confidence booster. He was always encouraging, yet critical. His feedback motivated me to continuously improve. Hearing an expert within the field commend my work made me recognize that once quality was maintained, it surpassed geographical boundaries!

online makeup school student ambassador paula alleyne's makeup portfolio - bridal shoot

What made you want to enroll in online makeup school, and why did you ultimately choose QC Makeup Academy?

Before pursuing online makeup school, I originally looked around for a brick-and-mortar school where I lived. However, the options appeared extremely limited, and I was unsure about the depth of content.

I then decided to pursue online learning. Whatever I chose, I knew it had to be flexible, as my time was already limited. Just as importantly, I had to be convinced that the online makeup school in question wasn’t a sham.

I ultimately chose QC Makeup Academy when I saw how active they are on social media. I realized it was also an established educational institution, accredited with an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau. All of this definitely allayed my fears, and showed me that QC is a legitimate as they come!

What advice would you give aspiring makeup artists who are considering online makeup school in order to earn their professional certification?

Go for it! “Never stop learning” is one of my stances. In this current environment, and in light of COVID-19, there’s been such a surge in online learning. It has become the new norm, and is truly the safest form of obtaining a solid education these days! Earning a professional certification can only enhance your ability, so don’t delay.

online makeup school student ambassador paula alleyne doing makeup on client

What’s in store for PAULA MONIQUE in the next year?

Glad you asked! You should look out for some educational content coming soon. Starting out as a professional makeup artist can be daunting. Breaking into the industry and finding solid, professional advice can feel a bit tricky at first. You can easily fall prey to trends promoted on social media.

I’m still learning, and will always be learning. Therefore, I invite everyone to learn alongside me as I engage industry professionals on topics surrounding makeup artistry!

Missed Part One of this series? No worries, you can check it out here!

Today, we’ll take a look at another 7 of Nathan’s most valuable beauty hacks. On a quest to learn how to makeup properly, and looking for ways to improve your game? Then you don’t want to miss out on these gems!

Tip #1: The power of a rich, brown eye shadow!

“If you’re ever in a pinch, and want to know something quick and amazing to do to your client, a rich, deep brown eye shadow can be a game-changer! The quality of the neutral depth of color… It works on every skin tone, every age, and ever single person – no matter what their eye color [is]. It’s pretty amazing! Try it out and see what happens.”

Tip #2: How to properly warm up your client’s skin!

“Never try to warm up your client’s skin by using foundation that’s deeper. You run the risk of creating that dreaded makeup mask; the face that doesn’t match the body. What you do instead is you match the client’s skin perfectly, and then add the warmth [and] add the color with blush and bronzer. They’ll look like a million bucks every time!”

Tip #3: How to tame unruly brows!

“Unruly brows? A spritz of hairspray on a spoolie brush is the perfect way to tame those beasties!”

Tip #4: How to capture the glow from within!

“Want to capture that perfect glow from within? Try putting your blush, bronzer, and highlight on before your foundation.”

Tip #5: How to achieve the perfect lip!

“For a perfect lip, try putting the lipstick on first – and then refine and add crispness to the lip line with your liner.”

Tip #6: How to achieve perfect symmetry!

“Having trouble with symmetry? Work on the side that’s harder for you first, because it’s way easier to duplicate that on the easier side!”

Tip #7: The secret to flawless, natural foundation!

“Want to know the secret to making your client’s foundation look completely flawless and natural? Apply a thin layer – a sheer, light layer – of foundation all over the face. Then apply a second, small layer, only in the areas that need a little bit of extra coverage.

If there are some stubborn spots? The lightest touches of concealer! But that little, tiny, magic, light-handed touch will give you that flawless face that looks like nothing’s there.”

Stay tuned for future installments of this series, where we’ll compile and share even more of Nathan’s educational and practical ‘Tuesday Tips’. The journey to learn how to do makeup has never been this exciting! ❤️️
