How QC’s Pro Makeup Workshop Accelerated My Makeup Career

By About the School, Education, Student Ambassador No Comments

Nadia Calabro is a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, as well as a QC alumnus. She has graduated from the Master Makeup Artistry Course, the Pro Makeup Workshop, and the Skincare Course. She is also the proud founder of her very own makeup business, Beauty Beyond the Mirror.

Today, Nadia reveals all the reasons why taking QC’s Pro Makeup Workshop has benefited her professional makeup career!

A little over a year ago, I decided I wanted to accomplish my dream of becoming a successful MUA and starting my very own makeup business! Prior to this, I was already a hair stylist. This means that I’m fully aware of how competitive the beauty industry is. (This is especially the case in my area.) So, I knew without a doubt that the first step to accomplishing my overall goal would be to get the best education I possibly could.

I did my research and lots of it. I looked into different makeup schools; trying to find the one that would best suit my needs. Once I discovered QC Makeup Academy, it quickly climbed to the top of my list!

The first thing that grabbed my attention was that all of their makeup courses are done completely online! For me, being able to do my studies from home was essential. As a busy mom of two young boys, sitting in a physical classroom all day and being away from them wasn’t an option for me.

As I continued my research into QC Makeup Academy, everything I found had me even more convinced that by enrolling in this school, I’d be taking the first step towards launching a great makeup career! I noticed that QC always had some sort of promotion running each month, so when I was ready to get started, I took advantage of the promo being offered to me at the time.

As such, after enrolling in the Master Makeup Artistry Course, I was also given the opportunity to enroll in a free Advanced Makeup Course as well. After careful deliberation, and reviewing the wide variety of courses QC had to offer, I decided that I would also enroll in the Pro Makeup Workshop.

Why I Chose the Pro Makeup Workshop

All of the Advanced Courses appealed to me. In fact, it was hard for me to choose which one I really wanted to enroll in at first! But I knew that my decision had to be based on whichever course would take my skills to the next level.

After all, you have to remember that my ultimate goal was to start a makeup career. I wanted to work professionally within this industry and find success. The beauty industry can be a pretty cut-throat world, so I knew that in order for me to prosper, I’d need to continue strengthening and refining my craft as much as possible.

The only way for me to make my decision was to research into each class. To do this, I used the school’s website to read up the different course descriptions and outlines. After that, I then went onto their Facebook and Instagram pages. I wanted to find past and present students’ work, as well as read reviews from real people who had taken QC courses.

Of everything I saw, though, I have to say that reading the course breakdown of the Pro Makeup Workshop was actually the thing that convinced me of my decision. it ticked off each one of my boxes, in terms of what I needed to accelerate and succeed in my makeup career!

What I Learned from My Training

This course gave me so many amazing challenges and lessons! I got to build on the foundational skills I learned in the Master Makeup Course, in a way I didn’t think was possible. For instance, I learned advanced makeup techniques, such as:

  • Makeup for the limelight
  • Editorial, runway and avant-garde looks
  • Intricate eyeliner and cat-eye applications
  • The reverse smoky eye
  • Pin-up looks
  • And much more!

As part of the Pro Makeup Workshop, I also got to take classic looks and put modern spins to them. Most importantly, I got to take the techniques I learned about bridal makeup from the Master Makeup Artistry Course, and elevate them to the next level!

A Look into My Assignments

The Pro Makeup Workshop gave a more focused look into both the classic and the most in-demand makeup techniques. I worked on creating makeup looks for:

On top of all this, I got to work with glitter for the first time, too. With the help of my instructor, I learned how to incorporate it into all my other looks. I practiced perfecting the brows and eyeliner – most specifically the cat-eye.

Lastly, and most importantly for me, I got to take a very in-depth look at bridal makeup.

My favorite parts of this course were the smoky eye lessons and the additional bridal makeup training. In my opinion, as a makeup artist, you can never know too much about the smoky eye! Literally, everyone is always requesting this look, whether it be for a night out on the town, for a wedding, etc.

This course taught me the various stages to creating:

  • A flawless smoky eye, ranging from softer to more dramatic designs (i.e. starting with grays and moving to black shadows)
  • The different types of smoky eyes (i.e.e classic, reverse, and glitter smokey eye)
  • The ability to know which type of smoky eye is appropriate for any given occasion

The bridal component of the Pro Makeup Workshop was the most important piece for me. You see, my dream is to run a successful bridal makeup business! So, having the chance to learn how to create timeless, elegant, and picture-perfect bridal looks was EXACTLY what I needed!

Through my additional training in this course, I learned how to quickly and effortlessly take a clean, dewy, and simple morning bride – and transform her into a more dramatic, evening bride.

Each assignment reinforced everything I’d originally learned in the Master Makeup Artistry Course and then built upon it even further. The Pro Makeup Workshop gave me the chance to practice more and get better at my craft.

At the same time, it also took me to new levels as well. Getting extra training helped boost my confidence. It made me feel like I really could pursue a successful makeup career, and that I’d be properly prepared to do any look in the real world!

How the Pro Makeup Workshop Accelerated My Makeup Career

Taking this course allowed me to push myself to the absolute limits! When I completed the Pro Makeup Workshop, I truly felt like I would be able to tackle any task that I was presented with.

From me to you: when it comes to having a fruitful makeup career, there’s NOTHING more important than getting a high-quality education. The more you know, the more you can do! The truth of it is, when you’re working as a makeup artist in the real world, your clients will always be looking to see what you know and how you perform.

While I knew that I could still make something of myself by completing only the Master Makeup Artistry Course, I also knew that I’d be increasing my chances of success by leveling up with the Pro Makeup Workshop. As the old saying goes: knowledge is power!

By learning how to create more advanced looks, thanks to the Pro Makeup Workshop, I’ve been able to improve my makeup portfolio and make it that much more impressive to clients. I’ve gotten noticed much more – and with this recognition has come even more people reaching out to me with booking requests.

By completing this course, I gained the tools, the power, and the confidence needed to take on ANY client that comes my way. I’ll never have to say no to a potential job ever again! For this reason alone, I could not be more grateful.

Why Small Makeup Adjustments Make a BIG Difference!

By Education, From the Experts, Makeup Tips and Tricks No Comments
Written by Corina Wan and Alexis Myers.

Here at QC Makeup Academy, we strive to give our students the MOST out of our their learning experience. Our goal is to make the process of learning makeup online highly effective and all-encompassing, as well as strongly beneficial to those with dreams of launching a success career in the industry!

One of the ways we try to saturate our students with new and useful information is through our regular monthly webinars. Last month, our makeup guru, Nathan Johnson, devoted a full webinar to critiquing real work by students and graduates.

Didn’t get a chance to catch it? Watch the full video below!

Nathan’s goal in this webinar was to teach one major fundamental lesson: that the smallest adjustments in makeup often make a HUGE difference to the overall look!

Let’s examine a few of the student photos that were submitted for this webinar, and see how well they illustrate this lesson!

Why does such a small change have such a big effect?

We were intrigued by this question, so we did some research. Specifically, we looked into how a person’s brain perceives the human face.

In recent years, research has shown that the brain does not actually recognize the entire face. Instead, it recognizes about 20 different aspects of the face, such as distance between the eyes. Our brains then build an image from these different elements.

This explains why a tiny makeup change around the eyes, for example, can have a drastic effect. Amazingly, such adjustments can make the eye seem bigger, smaller, or even change its position on the face! Think of it as a nifty optical illusion, done by tricking the brain into relying on the way it builds the image of the face.

Bet you didn’t think that learning makeup online could get THIS interesting, did you? Well, sit tight, because we’re not even finished yet!

Let’s add in another critical factor. Our brains are said to perceive facial symmetry as a sign of great beauty, right? The problem is that hardly anyone actually has a symmetric face!

Makeup, therefore, has to trick the viewer’s brain into believing that the face is symmetrical.

Great makeup artists do two things. First, they strive for symmetry in makeup application. Secondly, they pay attention to the tiniest detail, knowing that onlookers will subconsciously respond.

As a makeup artist, you’re basically tricking the brain into seeing something that’s not actually there. You’re practically a magician! (Feel free to start calling yourself ‘Harry Potter’ – we won’t judge you.)

Anyone learning makeup online can go to the internet and get a rough idea of how to apple makeup to the face. But this method of learning will only ever be superficially rich, at best. Fact is, the internet will NOT teach you the necessary fundamentals of makeup artistry.

Not only will you be denied information surrounding proper makeup theory, classic technique, etc. – you won’t learn about the psychological aspect of makeup, such as the detail and symmetry perceived by the brain when looking at the human face.

This is why all of QC’s online makeup students are coached by experts like Nathan. Specialized guidance by a true industry professional is the single most effective way to learn how to focus on detail – and THAT is how you’ll bring your work to a professional level!

Do you find it hard to believe that great makeup is defined by attention to detail? Then consider this: an amateur pianist and a concert soloist play the same piano concerto. The same notes are played, in the same order and at the same pace. But what makes one jarring and the other lyrical?

Simple: the attention to the tiniest detail.

Become a true master of your craft by learning makeup online and training at QC Makeup Academy. After all, it’s “The Juilliard School” for makeup artists!

My Career as a Makeup Artist in the Film Industry

By Education, From the Experts, Student Ambassador No Comments

Caroline Edwards is a QC Makeup Academy Ambassador, as well as a current student in both our Master Makeup Artistry Course and Portfolio Development Workshop. She is the proud founder of her very own MUA business, specializing in makeup for film and television, Special FX, and personalized services. Today, Caroline discusses her career as a makeup artist in the film industry – and why her professional training with QC aided in her success!

Having the courage to follow your dreams, as well as your heart, is one of the most daunting experiences. But it’s also the most rewarding.

In terms of my career as a makeup artist, you might be wondering, how did my journey even start? It was quite simple, really. QC Makeup Academy kept popping up on social media feeds. Every time I saw it, I looked deeper and deeper into the school and their training. I was worried it couldn’t possibly be as good as it seemed. After all, you have to be careful with what you trust online these days.

But the truth is, I had no reason to worry. The more I learned about QC Makeup Academy, the more I was desperate to join!

Online vs. In-Person Training

You see, I really wanted to learn how to do makeup the proper way, but my options were limited. Online schooling was my only option, due to my personal schedule. In-person makeup courses were out of the question. I’m a full-time mother, responsible for looking after my son who has special needs. I needed to be available to him, as all of his schooling and care needs are done from home.

But while I couldn’t necessarily leave the house in order to pursue makeup training, I’d realized that during the times when my son was getting home-schooled, I could also use that time to get a solid education from the comfort of my own home!

A major perk to QC’s online courses is that there is no pressure; no deadlines. I could take my training at my own pace, and work towards my career as a makeup artist on my own terms. So, I decided to enroll! I made myself a promise that I would read my texts daily, and devote at least 10 minutes a day top hands-on practice.

I’ll admit, I always try to go above and beyond when it comes to my studies. Since it’s something I’m truly passionate about, I find that I’m like a sponge, soaking it all up. Once I started, I couldn’t get enough! All of my spare time became dedicated to makeup.

Optimal Learning with QC

The thing about trying to perfect your craft is that you need to go into it knowing you’re never actually going to perfect it. But that’s part of the excitement! I’m fully aware that I will never know everything, and that’s part of what pushes me to want to keep learning. There will always be something new to master. QC Makeup Academy engages you; sparking this fiery passion from the very start.

The course materials are well thought-out and very detailed. There are plenty of texts and videos to help mix up your learning experience. I love that I can re-read (or re-watch) anything at anytime, for as many times as I like. For this reason alone, I believe I’ve learned so much more than I would have in a physical setting.

Alongside this, the community I’ve become a part of has been invaluable. Particularly, the chance to network with my tutor, Nathan Johnson, as well as other QC students and grads. Honestly, I don’t think I could get better support anywhere else if I tried!

For example, QC has a Virtual Classroom where the QC community can get together, discuss the industry, and support each other. Everyone’s so eager and willing to provide helpful feedback and cheer you on in your journey!

The feedback you’ll receive from QC’s tutors will be personalized and tailored to your own work. It’s never sugar-coated, but it’s always beneficial. Your instructor will really make you think about your work. Some questions I’ve been asked by my tutor included:

  • Why are you applying a certain product?
  • What are you hoping to achieve by applying that product, in the way that you did?
  • What steps are you taking to achieve proper symmetry? Etc.

Your makeup education will train your eye, and teach you how to look at every fine detail. Nothing is off-limits! This is where the ultimate distinction is: a good school will teach you how to apply makeup. A great school will go one step further, by teaching you to understand why you apply makeup the way you do. This the true secret to successfully launching a career as a makeup artist, and making a name for yourself that will last for years to come!

So, would I recommend QC Makeup Academy? Without a doubt!

Thanks to my training here, I’ve since been able to start my very own bridal business. I’m proud to say that this business has so far garnered a lot of success! On top of that, through my personal network, I was able to branch out into the film and television industry, too!

Taking My Career as a Makeup Artist to the Big Screen

Thanks to a friend, I was offered the chance to work on a filmset as a makeup artist for a day. I don’t believe this would have been possible without my fantastic training from QC Makeup Academy. I can’t even describe for you what that opportunity felt like. It was the most incredible day!

I got to see how a movie is put together, and let me tell you: the amount of cast and crew involved for a single project is downright insane. As part of my role that day, I was given a set number of cast members to work on. It was my job to do both their hair and makeup.

In order to know the kind of hair and makeup that was expected of me, I was provided with a brief, which I had to follow closely. Once I finished with each cast member, they were then checked over by the head of makeup. Once given the green light, they were good to go to set. While the actual filming was taking place, I had to stay extremely quiet and remain on standby, in case any checks or touch-ups were needed.

Sometimes, though, a small opportunity can actually open the door to a much larger one! As it so happened, what was supposed to only be a single day of work turned into me staying on with this film for an entire year!

The film itself is a rather harrowing story, set in Victorian times and based on a true story. Feel free to learn more about it on Instagram, if you’re interested!

Thanks to my professional training and this unique opportunity, I’ve since discovered my niche. I have found that my career as a makeup artist is being geared towards the film industry. Moving forward, this is where I’ve decided I want to stay and focus my efforts.

Food for Thought

As a parting note, I just want to take a moment to say anything is possible for you. It doesn’t matter what your age, gender, background, or other commitments are. If you have an interest or passion for this craft, you CAN have a career as a makeup artist. This is an industry that’ll never be too full of talent. There will always be room for you, if you make room for it.

On that note, I urge you to join QC Makeup Academy. My experience with QC has set me up for the most amazing journey, and I know it can do the same for you. So, get that classical training under your belt, and chase those dreams. They are waiting for you!

4 Ways My Makeup Artist Certification Has Helped Me Succeed in the Industry

By Education, From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here.

With YouTube and social media being an immediate source of information, many people might think: “I don’t really need a makeup artist certification. I can just learn from watching videos.”

Although information is easily accessible today, does it necessarily mean that you’re learning the correct information? How can you even be certain that you’re learning from a skilled industry professional?

I myself have learned a lot from watching makeup artists on YouTube. But there are certain things that influencers won’t disclose, explain, or possibly have knowledge of when it comes to a professional makeup business.

For instance, these social media artists mostly apply makeup on themselves, rather than on models. Not to mention, they generally stick with trendy techniques that are popular at that time. You won’t really learn anything about classic technique or makeup theory – both of which are essential if you want to turn this into a career.

If you only learn from influencers or are self-taught, I ask you:

  • What about Special Effects makeup?
  • Don’t you want to know how to do makeup for film, television, and/or live theater?
  • What if you encounter a client with mature skin?
  • Do you know how to properly apply makeup on a man?

These are questions to consider when debating if a makeup artist certification is right for you. Here’s my insight as a professional…

4 ways that my makeup artist certification has benefited MY professional career:

1 – Being Seen as a Professional

The beauty industry is a highly saturated field. In order to see your business flourish, you have to be seen and acknowledged – not just as an artist, but as a professional. After all, you want others to take you seriously. If your fellow industry pros acknowledge your proficiency, a lot more opportunities will open up for your business.

With a makeup artist certification, such as the kind you can earn from QC Makeup Academy, you’re learning the side of becoming an MUA that goes far beyond makeup application. When I was earning my own certification, I found that I was able to study and apply business techniques in a real-world setting!

Once potential clients see that you have obtained a legitimate makeup artist certification, they’ll understand that you take your career seriously. Your certification is proof that you took the time to learn more about your craft, and dedicated yourself to providing clientele with the best possible services.

Now, here’s a fun little fact for you: not only does a makeup artist certification help you with clients, it can also help you save money! After graduating from QC Makeup Academy, I was able to apply as a professional MUA for certain online retailers (such as Urban Decay, Sigma, and MAC – just to name a few).

There, I could shop for products at a discounted price! This helps me to regularly restock and build up my professional kit without breaking the bank. I’d definitely call that a great advantage!

2 – Becoming a Legitimate Business

If this is your first time starting your own business, legitimizing it can be a step that often overwhelms and confuses the best of us. However, the right school will ensure you’re properly prepared as you earn your makeup artist certification. In QC Makeup Academy’s courses, for example, you’re provided with an entire unit devoted to Business education.

The Business unit of my certification is one that I valued the most. With that unit, I learned:

  • Marketing and promotion techniques
  • Tips on working with potential clients
  • How to “Seal the Deal” on reluctant clients
  • Creating professional contracts
  • And so much more!

Although QC’s Business units are technically “optional”, I strongly recommend you take advantage of them. They’re a key component to you knowing how to make your future business legitimate, and run it properly.

As a professional MUA, the skills and tips learned through my makeup artist certification have truly helped me to sell, market, and grow my business. For starters, I’ve had many clients express to me that the professional contracts I’ve developed have set me apart from other makeup artists they’ve worked with in the past!

Likewise, I’ve been able to easily apply the knowledge learned through my course in order to register my business, update my business kit with essentials, and map out financing and bookkeeping for my business.

3 – Contracts and Pricing

One of the biggest challenges you may face as a new artist, or even an experienced one, is setting prices. Something we’ve all experienced when dealing with potential clients is hearing, “Wow, your prices are high,” or, “I know someone who will do it cheaper.”

But you’ve worked hard to obtain your makeup artist certification, and what sets you apart is that you do have proper business training! So, don’t worry. You’ll be able to promote yourself effectively to clients like these in a professional way; one that helps them understand just how valuable your services are.

Obtaining a makeup artist certification allows you to market yourself as a true industry expert who has put the time, training, and research into your craft. This can help you to determine your pricing accordingly, in order to reflect that.

Additionally, make sure that with each client, you always have a professional, written contract. This contract should include your set pricing, policies, and any other critical information relevant to your business and services. A strong contract will provide your client with a sense of comfort; they’ll be able to see that you uphold your business and professionalism to a high standard.

Plus, contracts also protect you and your business when dealing with clients. They’re also a great resource to help you maintain your bookkeeping and business records!

4 – My Clients

Lastly, but just as importantly, you can learn ALL about your clients through a makeup artist certification course.

Clients are the foundation of your business! Knowing how to properly apply makeup to all skin types, face shapes, eye shapes, and for specific platforms is all going to make your business stand out from the rest.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, social media can be a great place to learn about techniques and products. However, it also limits you to what’s popular or mainstream – which may not be techniques you can apply for all clients or settings. Social media won’t teach you:

  • Which products to use for different skin types and textures
  • Makeup theory and foundational techniques
  • How to apply makeup for film and television, versus makeup for photography, or makeup for theater
  • Etc.

These are all skills you need to have in order to best service your future clients! The more you limit yourself, the more you’ll limit the number of clients you can offer your services to.

If you want to invest in your career and your business, I would highly recommend enrolling in a professional course and getting a makeup artist certification. Personally, I strongly recommend the Master Makeup Artistry Course offered at QC Makeup Academy (which is the course I took)!

The insight learned from this course has set me apart from my peers. Even more than that, it taught me how to become a better boss, a better businesswomen, and a better makeup artist overall.

How QC’s Skincare Course Helped Me Become a Better Makeup Artist!

By About the School, Education, From the Experts, Student Ambassador No Comments

Today, Nadia draws on her experience with QC’s Skincare Course to tell YOU why it’ll take your makeup career to the next level!

Following your dreams can seem like a daunting task, especially if you’ve been in a job you don’t love, or at home raising kids for a while. I know it was a nerve-wracking decision for me! I knew I wanted so much more; that being a professional makeup artist was what I needed in my life. But I didn’t know how I could make this happen.

My sons were still young and needed me, so going back to a physical classroom was impossible. I had to find a way to be home and complete my makeup courses at the same time. The only option was to find an online makeup school.

I had been told that makeup school online would never teach me everything I needed to know in order to start a successful career. I’ll be honest, it discouraged me… That is until I found QC Makeup Academy.

QC’s makeup course was so detailed and thoughtfully put together that within four months, I was a confident, certified makeup artist! I studied at home online, all on my own time, and at my own convenience. The best part was that all the while, I was still able to be with my kids.

Furthering My Education into Skincare

After my Master Makeup Artistry Course, I pushed my education by doing the Pro Makeup Workshop. My instructor, Nathan Johnson, suggested a few times that I look into doing the Skincare Course as well. He assured me that it would really enhance my talents.

I sat on this for a while; not sure if it would really be for me, or if I could work with the information I already had. So, I decided to do some research, to get a better idea of what a Skincare Course could do for my career.

I started by looking up general information on different skin types, different products, proper skincare regimens, and the impact of taking care of your skin. From there, I went to the QC Virtual Classroom and looked up posts by current students in the program.

What I found astounded me!

No one had anything negative to say. In fact, the consensus was all the same: skincare was a MUST! From there, I went onto the QC website and read what would be covered in the Course, and I was sold!

My online makeup courses through QC were excellent, so I had no doubt that the Skincare Course would be the same. I already knew that if I was going to pursue skincare, it would be with QC. To top it all off, I was going to be adding more certifications to my name, while still be home with my kids.

It was a win-win all around!

How the Skincare Course Has Changed my Career as MUA

If I’m being honest, even with all I knew about makeup, there were times when I would apply a full face and not be able to shake the feeling that something just didn’t look right. No matter what I tried, the foundation wasn’t setting right. My skin was dull instead of dewy, and the whole look felt wrong.

I would beat myself up over it, wondering what I was doing wrong in those moments. Turns out, the Skincare Course answered that question! It had NOTHING to do with my makeup knowledge. It was the skin itself that was lacking, and ultimately setting my look up for failure.

By doing the Skincare Course, I am now better able to see, know, and understand different skin types and concerns. Then I can take it a step further by being able to properly address them.

For instance, I know how to properly moisturize and prep the skin, even before laying down the makeup primer. I learned how to work with my makeup on a whole different level! Before getting any skincare training, when I thought of working with a person’s skin, I’d always put the emphasis on the primer. I thought that so long as the primer was right, the rest would all fall into place.

I was so wrong!

By understanding the skin, I’m able to use my powders and creams in appropriate ways and areas. Furthermore, I can set my makeup accordingly. If I need my clients’ looks to last all day, I know exactly how to make that happen. This is critical knowledge!

The most amazing thing was that by doing the Skincare Course, I added a whole new, marketable service to my list. Most importantly, it added to the types of services I can offer brides (who are my target market). I’m now able to speak to them about what to use on their skin. I can help them ensure that it looks absolutely flawless on their big day, as well as in their pictures that will last a lifetime.

Doing the skincare course has added to my credentials and my income!

Skincare Course Assignments

Below are some of the amazing topics that are covered in the Course:

It isn’t only about perfecting makeup and appearances; it’s about a person’s overall health. The course textbooks are filled with so much detailed information, that I actually found them hard to put down! I loved every lesson, as each brought something different to the table, and opened my eyes to the types of services I could offer my clients.

From the moment I started the Skincare Course, I was captivated. I never knew how much there was to learn about skin, or how important it really is!

My Favorite Assignment

I truly believe that this assignment really prepared me for all that was to come in my future!

They also told me which parts of my report worked, as well as the parts I should fix. This assignment was able to really show me that my own clients would be satisfied with such a service and even be something they’d gladly pay for.

This hands-on assignment also gave me a chance to get feedback from my instructor on where I could improve. Even more importantly, it gave me the opportunity to get feedback from a client, in terms of what they thought of this both service and me. The client was able to tell me what areas really made sense to them, versus which areas I needed to add more detail.

It brought everything I had learned together, and really tested what I had retained. I got the chance to work with a real client, and get comfortable with asking questions and taking notes. I got to practice my researching skills and build a proper report.

It’s hard to pick my favorite assignment! But I have to say that the final assignment – where I needed to complete a full skincare consultation – was the best part for me.

How to Become a Freelance Makeup Artist in as Little as 2 Months!

By Education, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Do you have a passion for makeup? Are you interested in taking your skills to a professional level? Is a successful career as a makeup artist your ultimate goal?

If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, then QC Makeup Academy can help! We, for one, think there’s no better time to get started on the path towards your future than today!

Now, you may be thinking, “But what if I want to get my certification in the next few months, so I can start working in the field right away? Don’t most makeup courses take long time to complete?”

Great questions!

Typically, yes, many standalone makeup courses can take 3-6+ months for you to complete. Most cosmetology schools, in comparison, will typically take anywhere from 8 months to 2 years to finish. Even self-paced courses require plenty of time to complete, when you factor in that you’re completing the course around your existing schedule.

But with the right motivation, dedication, and availability, we can offer you a way to get the most of your makeup training AND graduate with a professional certification in as little as TWO months!

That’s right, you heard us. Two months.

Think about it: this would mean that you could get top-quality training from an industry expert, earn your certification, and be ready to break out into the professional world and start booking clients – by the end of this summer!

If you’re thinking that this sounds like the PERFECT opportunity for you, keep reading! We’ll break down how QC Makeup Academy makes this possible through our Fast-Track Program, and what you need to do to get started!

Please Note: While some makeup businesses are beginning to open back up, or are making plans to do so in the near future, please stay mindful of the rules and regulations in your particular area. If local businesses are still advised to remained closed for the time being, we urge you to follow this order and wait until things are safer before you begin booking clients.

What is the Fast-Track Program?

The Fast-Track Program designed by QC Makeup Academy offers a solution for aspiring MUAs to earn their makeup certification in the least amount of time possible.

The Fast-Track Program is perfect for aspiring MUAs who may:

  • Wish to devote more hours per day to their education, in order to complete the program in a shorter time
  • Want to become a working, freelance makeup artist ASAP
  • Have goals to start their own freelance makeup artist business sooner rather than later

How Does the Fast-Track Program Work?

With our standard, self-paced makeup courses, the average student takes approximately 4-5 months to complete their program and graduate with their certification. This is based on devoting 1-2 hours per week towards the course (which is easily achievable for most lifestyles).

This also takes into account the average turnaround time for your assigned instructor to review each unit, grade each assignment, and provide detailed audio feedback.

QC’s Fast-Track Program condenses this experience into a shorter, 2-month time-frame! On your end, you would be expected to complete your course readings, watch the instructional videos, and complete and submit your makeup assignments more quickly. You’ll also need to pay for your course in full within 2 months. However, if you choose to pay off your tuition within your first 30 days, you’ll be eligible to receive our pay-in-full discount!

In return, we guarantee a 2-day turnaround time (always) for your tutor to review your work, grade it, and provide you with their thorough feedback.

Oh, and did we mention that as part of the Fast-Track Program, you’re guaranteed to be paired with our leading instructor and executive makeup artist, Nathan Johnson?

This is definitely a worthwhile perk! Simply put, Nathan is the BEST! ❤️️

The Fast-Track Program’s 4-Step Process

The easiest way to understand the Fast-Track learning  experience is to break it down into 4 easy steps:

Step 1: Enroll and Receive Your QC Course Materials

The enrollment process is easy, and can be done either directly online or by contacting our awesome Student Support Specialist Team. Within 24 hours of enrolling, you’ll receive an email containing your login information for the Online Student Center.

Here, you’ll find electronic copies of all of your course texts, instructional videos, and assignments. You can begin your first Unit immediately!

Within 3 business days, we’ll mail you a physical copy of your course materials. If your makeup course comes with its own makeup kit, that’ll be shipped out to you as well. This shipment will take roughly 7-10 business days to reach you. While you’re waiting for your kit, you can still get started on your course using the online textbooks and videos!

You won’t require makeup until you get to your practical assignments – by which time, your package from us will have already arrived!

Step 2: Submit Your Assignments

Each unit of your course will require you to put the makeup theory you’ve been learning to the test! This will be done in the form of practical assignments. Here, you’ll get hands-on experience applying makeup on your friends and family!

We recommend practicing your skills and doing your assignments on as many different people as you can. This is the single best way for you to gain exposure to different skin types, tones, conditions, ages, etc.

Note: In light of COVID-19, we urge you to continue practicing social distancing. If social distancing rules have not yet been lifted in your area, please do NOT put yourself or others at risk for the sake of your assignments. It’s 100% okay under these circumstances to do your practical assignments on yourself, or anyone who’s been residing within your immediate living environment (so long as they’re willing to be a model).

Practice makes perfect, so take as much time as you need to work on your assignments until you’re completely satisfied with the end result! Once you are, you can then take photographs of your work and submit them through the Online Student Center.

Step 3: Review Your Feedback

As we mentioned above, one perk of using our Fast-Track Program is that celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson, will go over your assignments with a fine-toothed comb, and provide you with his expert feedback, in as little as 2 days.

This feedback will be in the form of an audio file. Like with your course materials, you can keep this valuable feedback forever, and refer to it as often as needed!

Nathan’s feedback will be incredibly detailed, so we urge you to pay close attention while listening to it. He’s going to cover a LOT of ground with you, such as where your strengths are and where you need to improve. Growing as a freelance makeup artist (and even just a makeup artist in general) means being open to positive, constructive criticism.

The aim will only ever be to help you grow, improve your techniques, and encourage you to fine-tune  your craft!

Step 4: Become a Certified Makeup Artist

Once you’ve completed and submitted all the Units within your program, and have received passing grades, you’ll officially be a certified MUA! We will mail out a physical copy of your certification in the mail, and from there, you can then begin your journey as a professional makeup artist!

Don’t forget, our courses also offer optional business training as the final Unit in your program. If you wish to be a freelance makeup artist and launch your very own business, we strongly urge you to take advantage of this training!

For instance, QC Makeup Academy graduate and pro MUA, Devyn Gregorio, recently shared a video on her YouTube channel, discussing the benefits of QC’s business training and how it’s helped her gain even more success in her career.

How to Get Started

If you’re interested in using our Fast-Track Program to earn your makeup certification, simply contact our Student Support Specialist Team and we can help get everything up and running!

So, what are you waiting for? Your future is waiting for you – grab a hold of it and make it come to life!

The Differences Between Film and Stage Makeup

By Education, From the Experts No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here. Today, she draws on her professional expertise – as well as her experience in QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course – to break down the similarities and differences between theater makeup and makeup for film/television!

As a makeup artist, you need to make sure that you are well-versed in all of the tricks of the trade! This is the single best way to prepare yourself for any job or opportunity that may present itself.

A great way for you to gain experience, exposure, and networking opportunities is by working as an MUA in film, television, and/or theater. However, a rookie mistake would be to assume that film and/or television makeup requires the same products, or even the same approach, as theatrical and/or live stage makeup.

Keep reading to learn the differences between these two makeup mediums…

Film and Television Makeup

When diving into the world of film and television makeup, there are a few things to consider first. This way, you can always guarantee that your client’s makeup will have a flawless finish!

What is the style of the film or TV show?

This means the makeup needs to reflect a flawless, natural finish! Subtlety is the name of the game when it comes to this type of makeup.

However, these are exactly the things you want to avoid doing when working on clients for film/television! In this industry, the cameras and lighting used are both 4K  high definition. They can spot (and showcase) the tiniest details.

This type of makeup application is very different from the bold, heavy looks most commonly seen on the internet. Social media makeup is often defined by the caked-on foundation, thick concealer, and intense highlight and contouring.

First, you must understand that the style of film and television makeup is rather unique.

What do you want to accomplish?

Using the right foundation and concealer, your goal will always be to even out the skin tone – without caking on the setting powder. Film and TV makeup doesn’t require the “baking” step that’s become so popular on Instagram and YouTube.

For starters, it can make the actor’s skin look oily. It can also cause a glare on the cameras. (Unless the director is J.J. Abrams, they’re probably not going to want that.)

It’s also critical to add that certain products, such as highlighters, are rarely used as part of the film and/or television makeup. For example, a highlighter is typically avoided because when the 4K cameras and lighting pick it up, it creates undesirable results.

As we mentioned above, any imperfections are only going to be amplified when filmed with high-definition equipment!

With film/TV makeup, setting powder is mostly used to help minimize oils on the skin. What you want to avoid is applying too much powder, as this can have an unwanted, opposite effect. Too much powder will result in the skin looking extremely dry.

Using the right products + tools

The products and techniques a makeup artist should use when creating looks for film and television require a light hand. You’re only going to want to use products which have been professionally made for HD (high definition).

You want to create looks that are more natural and pick up well when on camera. Regular makeup products won’t be as reliable in helping you achieve this.

Top Makeup Products for Film and Television Makeup

  • HD foundations and concealers
  • Airbrush liquid foundation
  • Creme blushes
  • Neutral colored lip liners / lipsticks / lip tints
  • Loose, translucent setting powder

Theatrical and Stage Makeup

Unlike film/TV makeup, which should look “natural” and lightweight, theatrical and stage makeup requires the opposite approach. This is because heavier products and bolder looks are needed.

Theatrical and live stage makeup needs to be able to withstand different conditions!

When you watch a play or live performance, you can’t rely on cameras to zoom in on the actors’ faces and illustrate the tiniest details. Often, you’re sitting in a rather large theater space. The further away you are from the stage, the harder it is to see the actors’ faces.

Theater/stage makeup aims to compensate for this by offering exaggerated looks and features. This way, the makeup can be seen from all the way to the back of the room! In these types of settings, the lighting used also tends to be quite harsh, in order to properly illuminate the entire set. If the makeup is too natural or subtle, this can also alter how the performer looks altogether!

Specifically, it can easily make the actor appear washed-out or flat. Rather, theatrical makeup should be applied with an exaggeration of the client’s features. For example, because the actor needs the makeup to withstand harsh lighting, the artist may choose to:

  • Over-line the lips
  • Apply thicker contour
  • Add bolder blush
  • Deepen the eyebrows and eye shadows, to create the illusion of larger eyes

Top Makeup Products for Stage Makeup

For this medium, you’d be best off using proper makeup products, specifically made for the stage. These products are specifically crafted to be able to endure harsher conditions while remaining vibrant.

Some of the most commonly used brands for theatrical and stage makeup include:

(That last one is a true Holy Grail item, by the way!)

Education

Although I’ve provided some insight into the differences between film/television makeup, compared to theatrical/live stage makeup, it’s important to note that this information only just scratches the surface.

If you want to continue learning and broaden both your industry knowledge and skill-set, my recommendation is schooling. Hands-down, one of the most efficient ways to learn about makeup application techniques, as well as the proper products to use for different categories of makeup, is to learn through a reputable makeup school

QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course teaches each category of makeup in great depth. Unit F of this all-encompassing makeup course dives into proper makeup training for the entertainment industry.

When you apply for the MMA Course, you’ll grow and deepen your knowledge on:

  • Makeup techniques and applications
  • Makeup theory and foundation
  • The best products and practices to use
  • Business insight

On top of your course texts and makeup kit, you’ll also be provided with video tutorials teaching you how to create looks for the entertainment industry.

This incredible program is a solid way to expand your makeup artistry, strengthen your portfolio and resume, and help you stand out from the competition!

If you do one thing to further your makeup career in 2020, let it be earning your professional certification through QC Makeup Academy!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Henna – Part 2

By Education, Makeup Tips and Tricks No Comments

As a professional makeup artist, it’s important to keep expanding your skill-set. The more knowledge you have about makeup, the better (and more inclusive) your services will be!

The best way to broaden your training is with makeup classes. For example, QC Makeup Academy has a program entirely devoted to teaching you about cosmetic and beauty practices from all around the world! As part of this Global Beauty Workshop, you’ll learn all about Henna.

In Part 1 of our look into the art of Henna, we broke down what it is, where it comes from, and its symbolic/historical roots. Importantly, we also took a look at some of the proper (and improper) habits to adopt when incorporating Henna into your makeup business.

Let’s expand on this, and check out a few more ways to properly do Henna – as well as some ‘sins’ you need to avoid!

Do: Make Your Own Henna Products

Unfortunately, it’s very easy to cut corners and purchase the wrong Henna products. The less organic the ingredients are, the worse the quality of the final product will be.

In recent years, it’s become a bit of trend – particularly in Western culture – to buy pre-mixed Henna cones. While this is undoubtedly a bit more convenient, we recommend against doing this. If you buy a pre-made concoction, you’ll have no way of knowing exactly what’s gone into the mixture. Furthermore, you won’t be able to control the ratios, the consistency, or create the ideal cone for application.

Instead, your best bet is to purchase fresh Henna powder, and mix it yourself. Typically, this powder will be mixed with water and oils (such as eucalyptus oil, henna oil, and/or black clove oil). There are also plenty of ways for you to create the Henna cone yourself. This YouTube video, for example, breaks the steps down in an easy-to-follow tutorial.

When researching into where to purchase your Henna powder, make sure to be thorough. There are tons of sellers out there who claim to offer high-quality powder, when in reality, it’s anything but! What you want to look for is a Henna powder that’s marketed as “body art quality”.

This specific type of powder is ground into very fine particles, so that when mixed with water and oils, it turns into a smooth mixture that creates a beautiful finish – without losing its texture and clogging up the opening of your Henna cone.

Pro Tip: If your makeup classes are teaching you how to do Henna tattoos (that is, Henna designs on the skin), make sure to stay away from ‘Neutral Henna’. While good for conditioning hair, it does nothing on the skin and would be a waste of your money!

Don’t: Use Henna Containing Chemical Additives

Much like with other beauty products, when Henna ingredients are all-natural, they’re far less likely to cause any damage to your client’s skin. On the contrary, Henna powder containing harmful chemicals can be a concern.

It’s believed that the greenness of your Henna powder indicates how pure it truly is. If the powder is a strong green hue, it’s supposed to be of higher quality.

The problem is, many scammers have caught onto this fact, and have found a way to create fake (but convincing) alternatives. For instance, they may lace their Henna powder with green dyes in order to replicate the authentic, bright green color.

So, how do you know who to trust when buying your Henna powder?

Do your research! Never purchase any Henna powder whose ingredients aren’t openly listed for you to see. Only buy pure Henna powder that doesn’t contain chemical additives. And when looking into potential sellers, do as thorough of a background check on them as you can!

Read reviews, scour their website, search for them on social media. There are plenty of online chat groups and forums you can look into, where other Henna artists may recommend trusted suppliers.

The bottom line is: never purchase your materials from a supplier unless you’re confident in their product. Using anything less than pure Henna powder can potentially lead to issues down the road with clients, which can seriously damage your professional reputation.

Do: Avoid Black Henna

In order to change Henna from its natural greenness to a dark black color, there are many suppliers who opt to add PPD (para-phenylendiamine) to their powder. Unfortunately, this is a rather powerful chemical sensitizer, and can be seriously dangerous to some people!

Some possible side effects of prolonged exposure of PPD on the skin include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Redness/swelling
  • General skin irritation
  • Burns
  • Blisters
  • Permanent scarring

Needless to say, you don’t want to risk any of your clients experiencing any of these unwanted reactions! You’re better off avoiding PPD-infused Henna powder altogether. Yes, you may encounter some clients who specifically request black Henna.

However, for the sake of her safety, and the overall safety of your business, we recommend explaining the potential health risks to her, and declining such a service. Worst case scenario, if she refuses to budge, you can always recommend she visit an airbrush tattoo artist instead.

While it may cost you an appointment, it will ensure your client remains safe. Ultimately, this matters more.

Don’t: Prepare at the Last Minute

Your global beauty makeup classes will go into great depth about how to properly mix and create your Henna product. But one thing that’s especially important to stress is that you give yourself enough time to prepare your products before each appointment.

For starters, it may take some trial and error for you to learn what the perfect consistency is for your mixture. On top of that, you need to allow your Henna mixture to sit for at LEAST 6 hours before you can apply it to your client’s skin.

Anything less, and it may not stain the skin properly, have the desired color, or last as long before fading.

To ensure your client gets the best results, let your Henna mixture rest for as long as possible. You can even prepare the mixture for your appointment the day before, and let it sit overnight.

Pro Tip: Want to REALLY be organized? Prepare a large batch of your Henna mixture, and store it in your freezer! It can remain in there for up to six months, without ruining any quality.

Do: A Patch Test

When it comes to Henna tattoos, your makeup classes will ingrain in your head the importance of doing a patch test first. This will help determine whether or not your client’s skin will react well with your Henna mixture.

Could you imagine if you skipped this step, started applying the Henna all over your client’s hand, and she suddenly broke out into a severe allergic reaction? Such negligence could spell the end of your career!

Henna artists find that the inner part of your client’s wrist is the optimal spot to do a patch test. Simply apply a bit of your Henna mixture, and then advise her to keep an eye on it over the days to follow. Specifically, she needs to note if she experiences any irritation, swelling, or redness.

This is also a perfect opportunity for her to get a real feel for what she can expect from a full Henna application! Let her know what to expect in terms of the color changes the Henna will undergo over the next few days. She may find that the final result is exactly what she was expecting! Alternately, she may discover that it’s different than she originally thought it’d be.

All of this is why a patch test is so crucial! Ideally, you’ll want to perform it during the initial consultation. It’s best for you and your client to know as early on as possible whether you can provide the service she’s looking for. Neither of you want any unwanted surprises on the day of the appointment!

One fantastic way to do this is by studying the various pioneers that have shaped – and continue to shape – the beauty industry! By observing their makeup theories, philosophies, and business practices, you can better understand:

  • Makeup, in a way you may never have considered before
  • How these pioneers have influenced the cosmetic world
  • Different makeup trends, techniques, applications, and styles
  • Ground-breaking beauty and skincare knowledge
  • The complexity of different beauty products, and how to properly use them
  • How to start and maintain your own makeup business
  • How to network, as advised by legitimate experts
  • And so much more!

Note: If you’d like to revisit the previous installments of our “Makeup Artists to Follow” series, Part One can be found here, while Part Two can be found here.

Today, we’re taking a look at the one and only: Eve Pearl. Let’s delve in, and see exactly why Eve is regarded as one of the most revered leaders of the makeup world!

Meet Eve Pearl

With over two decades of experience in the cosmetic industry, Eve Pearl is a beauty innovator and professional MUA for film, television, theater, and print. A 9-time Emmy Award Nominee, Eve has been awarded with a whopping 5 Emmys for her work as a makeup artist on The View!

Her resume is truly an extensive one! Other notable programs she’s been involved with include Good Morning America, NBC’s The Today Show, and even The Academy Awards! Chances are, you’ve seen her work in the past, without even realizing she was the master behind it. She’s even done makeup for the Obamas! Whoah!

In addition to being a makeup artist, Eve has focused her talents towards educating others as well. In 2004, she wrote her very first book, entitled, “Plastic Surgery without the Surgery, The Miracle of Makeup Techniques”.

An empowering manifesto aimed towards women, Eve explores the societal pressures women face, how many turn to plastic surgery as a result, and how makeup can be a transformative tool used as a non-invasive substitute!

I wanted to share with others what I have discovered over the past fifteen years working as a makeup artist. Of the many people whom I have helped get ready for the camera, all have said one thing consistently: "I didn't know makeup could do that!"

They were amazed at the power of certain techniques to transform their faces, their eyes, their brows, their noses, their lips, and other aspects of their bodies …

Makeup not only lets you hold on to the part of yourself that your unique face represents, but also gives you the power to discover all the people you want to be. Let makeup be your magic wand!

Eve Pearl“Plastic Surgery without the Surgery, The Miracle of Makeup Techniques”

If there’s one thing we LOVE, it’s promoting self-love and acceptance. So, when it comes to Eve Pearl and her positive principles, we are 100% here for this incredible message!

EVE PEARL® Beauty Brands

You may be reading this and thinking to yourself, “I feel like I’ve heard this name before…”

Well, if you’ve watched QC’s Color Correcting Webinar (hosted by executive tutor and celebrity MUA, Nathan Johnson), then you definitely have! In particular, you probably recall Nathan endorsing Eve’s Dual Salmon Concealer.

Trust us: if you’ve ever used it, you know exactly why Nathan promises this to be a holy grail color correcting product in any makeup artist’s kit!

Indeed, Eve’s cosmetic line, EVE PEARL® Beauty Brands, is a game-changer. Multifaceted, these makeup and skincare products are great for ANY skin tone, gender, and age. For instance, nearly all of the foundation products offer a range starting from ‘Fair’, all the way to ‘Deep’ (or in some cases, ‘Deep 2’). We love how inclusive these products are!

Another thing we love is how there are endless varieties of pigments to choose from (both subtle and bold), especially for the eye makeup and lip products!

On top of makeup products, EVE PEARL® Beauty Brands also comes with its own skincare line, too. As a makeup student, you know full-well that behind every good makeup application needs to be an even greater skincare routine!

Happy, healthy skin is the ideal canvass for any makeup product!

Admittedly, Eve’s brand is a little pricier than the ones you’d find in your local drugstore. But one thing you’ll find is that many of the products come in palettes, full kits, and/or have dual-functioning uses. For the quantity AND quality of the products you receive, it proves to be well worth the investment!

Eve’s Pearls of Wisdom

First off, can we all appreciate how brilliant of a pun this is?

In terms of business websites in general, Eve’s is a great example of one to look up to. There’s a distinct color pattern, a solid branding, every bit of information you could possibly ask for, and so much more!

But one thing that we feel makes Eve’s site stand out is the section entitled, “Eve’s Pearls of Wisdom”. Because as we mentioned at the beginning, professional courses will teach a makeup student the foundation of makeup knowledge. They’ll educate you from the ground up; refine your skills, and elevate them to a professional level.

Once you have that under your belt, real-world tips from industry pros become THAT much more beneficial! And this is exactly what Eve’s Pearls of Wisdom offers: real-world tips that you can add in addition to your current knowledge, and harness in order to take your makeup artistry skills to the next level.

Here, Eve weighs in on the following topics:

On a separate part of her website, she also provides additional makeup tips, such as tips and skin remedies, video tutorials, and before/after transformations!

Whether you’re a makeup student, a professional MUA, or just a lover of all things makeup – one does not simply not know who Eve Pearl is! (Bonus points if you catch this reference.)

A pioneer of the cosmetic world, Eve Pearl has worked hard to leave her mark on the industry. Truly, she is the embodiment of what any aspiring makeup artist can hope to achieve in their career.
