Reacting to My Tutor’s Feedback for My Online Makeup Course!

By #ThrowbackThursday, About the School, Education, QC Student Ambassador 4 Comments

Want to enroll in an online makeup course? Dream of becoming a professionally trained MUA? QC Makeup Academy‘s self-paced, online Master Makeup Artistry Course can help you kick-start your career in as little as 3-6 months! Your tutor will be a real industry professional. Moreover, this tutor will provide you with extensive audio feedback after EVERY unit! Thus, you’ll learn exactly where your strengths are – as well as where you need to improve!

Want a better idea of the sort of feedback you’ll be receiving?

Current student, Jordan Garcia, is here to share some of the feedback he received from his tutor, Nathan Johnson, after submitting Unit B!

Jordan’s Tutor Feedback for Unit B of His Online Makeup Course

Jordan is a current student of the following QC Makeup Academy online makeup courses:

Last summer, Jordan submitted his second unit of the MMA Course. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Unit B is considered one of the most challenging sections of this certification program! Needless to say, Jordan was definitely anxious to have his tutor – celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson – review his work!

Lucky for us, Jordan is here not only to share some of the feedback and constructive critiques he received from Nathan… He’s also going to react to it and provide his thoughts in hindsight!

Watch the full video below!

Let’s Recap!

Why is Unit B of the Master Makeup Artistry Course so important? In a nutshell, here’s how Nathan summarizes the purpose of this second unit:

This is an amazing unit because within it, we start to go through all the individual techniques of master makeup artistry! When you put your time into mastering them, when you really understand them inside and out, you become capable of anything... because at the end of the day, whatever it is you want to make in makeup, it always comes down to combinations of basic techniques. Master them and they can be assembled into anything!

So, how was Jordan’s feedback for Unit B of this online makeup course? Nathan has some very positive things to say about Jordan’s progress and strengths. In particular, he praises Jordan’s ability to ‘perfect the skin’, as well as his conceal and correcting skills.

At the same time, he also breaks down each component of Jordan’s hands-on work and points out where improvements still need to be made. Specifically, Nathan discusses what can be bettered when it comes to basic eyeshadow application and wedge eyeliner.

Hands-down, though, the BEST part about Nathan’s feedback is how motivating and supportive it is! Not only does he acknowledge and congratulate Jordan on his hard work; Nathan aims to push Jordan further by reminding him (as always) that he has it in him to succeed, and that he is always there to help Jordan however he can.

Talk about a loving, encouraging learning environment!

Leilany Quintana

Graduate of QC Makeup Academy’s:

Master Makeup Artistry Course

Chicago, Illinois

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! I am Leilany Quintana, a 22-year-old makeup artist! I’m Puerto Rican and also bilingual. I graduated from high school in Florida and currently live in Chicago. I’m also a stay-at-home mother of a beautiful 3-year-old daughter! To describe my interests, I love art and mysteries!

Why did you decide to become a makeup artist?

I became a makeup artist because I wanted to learn different ways to show off art. Growing up, I colored and painted all the time. As I got older, I wanted to try something new – which was, of course, makeup.

I was also inspired by the makeup that was being done on actors. In particular, the movie, Labyrinth, was a big source of inspiration. David Bowie (who played the Goblin King) had a very unique look that you don’t see often in movies!

I started doing makeup 2 and a half years ago, and it’s been the best decision I have ever made! Personally, I believe that makeup can help show your personality or help tell your story. Being a makeup artist can also mean a flexible schedule. You get to meet people and go to places you’ve never been before. Moreover, there are SO many ways to continue learning and growing your craft!

QC Makeup Academy graduate, Leilany Quintana, Portfolio Image 1

How would you describe your makeup style? What’s your favorite makeup style?

I’d describe my makeup style as whatever mood I’m feeling at the moment! It can be a natural, classic look, a body and paint/special effects look, or even something bold. In terms of my favorite style, I’d say a bold look because I feel more like myself. Plus, you can be more creative; experimenting and having fun with different colors!

Why did you decide to pursue your certification training online instead of in-person?

Honestly, because of the pandemic. I was NOT going to let COVID-19 stop me from achieving one of my dreams! When I discovered QC Makeup Academy, they were the only school I found that was pocket-friendly! Furthermore, they also let you take your time and finish your course at your own pace… which I absolutely LOVE!

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy?

I discovered QC Makeup Academy through an ad I saw on YouTube! Ultimately, I decided to enroll because they offer a very flexible schedule, which helps a lot when you’re a stay-at-home mother.

You’ve since graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. Overall, how was your experience in this certification program?

My experience in the Master Makeup Artistry Course was amazing! Firstly, I love how they helped provide me with all the equipment needed for my training. I literally learned so much from the course! In fact, now I’m considering doing the Pro Makeup Workshop in the future.

In the Master Makeup Artistry Course, Unit B is known for being especially challenging. What was the biggest challenge YOU faced in Unit B and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced in Unit B was the blending assignment. Before taking the MMA course, I did not know much about blending. However, I overcame this challenge by taking my time, and constantly practicing until I perfected it. After all, practice makes perfect!

How valuable were the course materials provided to you (i.e. textbooks, instructional videos, makeup kit, etc.)?

To me, the course materials provided by QC Makeup Academy are VERY valuable! Literally everything you need to complete this course is given to you – and included within the cost of the program, on top of that. How amazing!

What was your favorite hands-on assignment and why?

My favorite hands-on assignment was blocking off my eyebrows! I didn’t expect it to be one of the assignments included in this course, but I’m very glad it was. It was very interesting and challenging, but I had so much fun doing it!

Give us an example of feedback you received from your QC Makeup Academy tutor, Nathan Johnson, that has helped you to become a stronger makeup artist!

Before I met Nathan Johnson, I used to take pictures with my front camera. However, he recommended taking pictures of my work with the back camera instead. After that, I noticed a tremendous change in my makeup looks! They come out clearer and stand out more! Plus, this also helps you to get a better view of the mistakes and/or perfections you might’ve made during the application.

You graduated and earned your certification shortly after the COVID-19 lockdowns went into effect. How has the pandemic impacted your professional career over the last year? What have you done to adjust accordingly?

The pandemic impacted my professional career over the last year, in that I haven’t been able to book as many clients as I wanted to. So, in the meantime, I try to work mainly on close family and friends.

What’s the #1 reason you recommend QC Makeup Academy to aspiring and experienced makeup artists alike?

The Number One reason why I’d recommend QC Makeup Academy to other MUAs is because they’re the only online makeup school WORLDWIDE that can help you save lots of money when becoming a certified makeup artist!

What is the proudest moment in your makeup career (so far)?

My proudest moment in my makeup career so far was getting my certification! No words can describe the joy I felt in that moment.

What are your top 3 career goals as a makeup artist?

  1. Get sponsored by a makeup company!
  2. Develop my own makeup products!
  3. Create makeup looks for celebrities!

Finally: if you were trapped on a desert island and could only bring ONE makeup product with you, which one would you bring and why?

My concealer! I’d choose this because I could try to color correct pimples or shape my eyebrows. Fun fact: my eyebrows are my signature look!

Becoming a Makeup Artist as a Multiple Amputee

By About the School, Graduate Feature, QC Student Ambassador 2 Comments

Thinking of becoming a makeup artist – but worried that personal circumstances and potential setbacks will stop you from being able to pursue your dream? We’re here to tell you right here and now that if you have a dream, you owe it to yourself to follow it. After all, life is too short to not do the things you love! 💕

Becoming a Makeup Artist as a Multiple Amputee

Amanda Ramey is a multi-graduate and Student Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. She is also a multiple amputee. Despite the barrier this could have posed her, Amanda chose not to see her situation as something capable of holding her back. Instead, she focused on her passion, her dedicated work ethic, and her desire to learn. The result? Amanda now has several internationally-recognized certifications under her belt and is an absolute makeup artistry wizard!

Watch the video below to learn more about Amanda’s journey…

Want to connect with Amanda directly? Join QC Makeup Academy’s free Virtual Classroom on Facebook!

Let’s Recap!

Amanda’s Experience Becoming a Multiple Amputee

At the age of 23, Amanda fell ill. Gradually, things took a turn for the worse, with Amanda’s body falling into septic shock. In order to stop things from progressing any further, Amanda underwent several surgeries to remove both of her legs below the knee, as well as the majority of her fingers. After spending a month and a half in the hospital, Amanda then spent another 4-5 months at home recovering – and even re-learning how to walk!

Prior to her amputations, Amanda worked as a professional tattoo artist. Despite everyone (including doctors) telling her that she’d never be able to continue this job again, Amanda refused to believe this. Through perseverance and determination, Amanda learned to adapt; to approach her crafts in a new way, in order to continue doing the things she loves best. As a result, she’s still a professional tattoo artist to this very day – defying the odds and proving all those who said she couldn’t do it wrong.

Becoming a Makeup Artist

Shortly after the birth of her newborn, Amanda started dabbling in makeup. Lo and behold, what began as nothing more than a hobby quickly turned into something more! Amanda quickly discovered that she had a natural talent for makeup artistry and wished to get a true education in it. But with her full-time job and busy schedule as a parent, in-person classes wouldn’t be an option. So, she researched into online schools… and found QC Makeup Academy!

Becoming a Makeup Artist with QC Makeup Academy

In her video, Amanda discusses the many reasons why she chose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy, and how her training has allowed her to become a makeup artist. Some of these reasons include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Of all the online makeup schools she found, QC seemed the most legitimate and respectable;
  • Moreover, she also found that QC Makeup Academy has the best reviews;
  • Plus, the self-paced, online learning environment was exactly what she was looking for!

So, how was Amanda’s experience with QC? According to her, her training completely changed the way she perceives and approaches makeup! She specifically credits the thorough tutor feedback she received after every unit as part of the reason why she’s grown as much as she has.

Amanda now has the following certifications/certificates under her belt:

  • Master International Makeup Professional (MIMP)
  • Pro Makeup Workshop certificate
  • Airbrush Makeup Workshop certificate
  • International Special FX Makeup Professional (ISMP)

Thanks to QC Makeup Academy, Amanda has been able to become a professional makeup artist and use her knowledge to grow her makeup career in the direction best suited for her goals!

In the following video, Gabrielle attempts to recreate an SFX face chart originally created by Lauren Sullivan. However, she was tasked with completing this application only using her right hand. As a natural lefty, this would obviously prove to be quit the task!

So, how did Gabrielle do? You’ll have to watch the video below to find out!

Why Gabrielle Nailed This Makeup Challenge

As you’ll see in the video, Gabrielle does a surprisingly great job at creating a full SFX makeup application using her non-dominant hand. If you’re wondering how this is possible, there’s actually a very simple answer.

(No, it’s not because she practiced a million times beforehand. We pinky promise!)

The truth is, it’s all due to the professional training Gabrielle already has under her belt. Although she wasn’t able to use her dominant hand, Gabrielle still knew exactly what she was supposed to be doing. You see, when you learn the fundamentals of makeup artistry, you’ll know how to apply them correctly – regardless of which hand you use.

Sure, the application might have looked a bit more polished and precise had Gabrielle used her left hand. But the fact that she didn’t and it still turned out as amazing as it did is a true testament to Gabrielle’s educational background and skill!
