Why I Enrolled in Makeup Artist Courses as a Licensed Cosmetologist!

By Uncategorized 2 Comments

Professional makeup artist courses offer vastly different training than what you’ll find in cosmetology school. Want to learn more? QC Makeup Academy‘s very own Student Ambassador, Angelica Hamlin, is here today to discuss why she chose to get makeup training – even though she’s already a licensed cosmetologist!

Why a Licensed Cosmetologist Chose to Enroll in QC’s Makeup Artist Courses

Angelica Hamlin is a student of QC’s Skincare Course. She is also a graduate of the Master Makeup Artistry and Virtual Makeup Training programs. Prior to enrolling with QC Makeup Academy, Angelica was first trained and licensed as a cosmetologist.

However, she found her cosmetology training to be rather limited when it came to makeup. It covered the basics, but not much else. Since Angelica wanted to add these services to her beauty business, she decided to enroll in makeup artist courses. This way, she could add to her existing qualifications and gain the extensive makeup knowledge she didn’t find in cosmetology school.

So, why did she choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy? What specifically did she learn at QC that she didn’t learn before?

Watch the video below to find out!

Makeup Artist Courses vs. Cosmetology School

There are a few key difference between the type of training you’ll receive from makeup artist courses versus what’s taught in cosmetology school. Here’s a general breakdown of these differences:

Makeup Training

  • Focuses specifically on makeup artistry
  • Delves deeply into foundational techniques, theories, principles, and applications
  • Offers extensive training into different areas of makeup (i.e. bridal, editorial, SFX, runway, film & television, etc.)
  • Teaches hygiene and safety training
  • Gives you the tools to launch/maintain a successful career as a makeup expert
  • Provides a reputable makeup artistry certification or certificate upon completion

Cosmetology Training

  • Required to teach specific curriculums that meet a regulated standard for cosmetologists
  • Teaches a broader set of beauty-related skills, such as working with hair, nails, and skin
  • As a result, a cosmetologist can offer certain beauty services that an MUA might not be able to
  • However, training focuses less on makeup artistry (only tends to teach the basics)
  • Provides a reputable cosmetology license upon completion
  • Typically requires a written or practical test to be completed in order to obtain this license

QC Makeup Academy Ambassador Alba Carpio feature image

Ambassador Feature: Alba Carpio

By About the School, Student Ambassador 2 Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Alba R. Carpio, and my life has been a roller coaster for the past few years. But right now, I can say I’m happily married and a proud mom. My love for characterization, sci-fi, and horror films started when I was a kid. When I went to University, I got my Bachelor Degree in Architecture.

However, when my father passed away, everything changed. I went through a very hard time; dealing with depression and anxiety. During this time, my passion for makeup revived. At first, I used it as a therapy. But it ending up becoming my safe place.

What made you decide to change career paths and switch from architecture to makeup artistry?

When I graduated, we had plans to move to Europe. But when my father passed away, we had to stay in Mexico and take care of the family business. Then I became pregnant. At that time, my husband and I decided it would be best for me to stay at home.

If I’m being honest, I revived my love for makeup through social media and watching influencers. Over time, though, that wasn’t enough. I wanted to learn everything in a professional way – especially Special FX makeup. So, I investigated all of my options and that’s how I found QC Makeup Academy. This school gave me the possibility of doing this as a career!

Prior to getting any training, you mentioned that you learned makeup primary through social media. When was it you realized that social media makeup is completely different from real-world makeup?

I actually found this out the hard way. One day, I got a phone call from my husband, asking me out on a romantic date. I wanted to surprise him with the makeup techniques I’d just learned from YouTube. When we arrived at the restaurant, he said in a very gentle way, “Babe, I think you have dirt on your face… take this tissue so you can clean up.”

It was embarrassing! But when I looked in the mirror, it was obvious that my contour was completely overdone. As QC Makeup Academy makes clear in their training, social media and real-life makeup are designed for completely different environments. Social media makeup is definitely not meant for everyday life.

Why did you decide to enroll in an online makeup school, rather than an in-person one?

Between being a new mom and dealing with all the tasks of running the family business, I had no time or energy to go to a physical school. But QC Makeup Academy did give me time and space to do my courses at my own pace. Plus, their amazing programs have been designed by industry professionals, and are led by the best of the best, in terms of tutors. This all gave me confidence that I was making a good investment.

So, how did you find out about QC Makeup Academy?

Online research! I knew that with my schedule, the only way I was going to be able to study was with an online school. I investigated very carefully into all my options. Once I found QC Makeup Academy, I quickly say that they offered everything I wanted!

Some of the reasons I chose to enroll are:

  • You have up to 2 years to finish your courses.
  • You have options to pay the course all at once or through affordable payment plans.
  • QC Makeup Academy’s certifications are internationally-recognized.
  • QC’s accredited with an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau.
  • They have very complete and interesting programs suitable for both beginning and advanced makeup artists.
  • Students are provided with personalized feedback from professional tutors.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course and Special FX Makeup Course. How was your experience with these programs, and how would you say they’ve helped you grow as a makeup artist?

QC changed my life in the best possible way. It’s not just the experience of learning professional makeup techniques; it’s also the personalized feedback you get from your tutors. They take the time to analyze your work and give you constructive criticism. Their goal is to help you grow by offering you advice, tips, tricks, and encouragement to be the best version of yourself as an artist.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an advanced student. Your previous experience, social medial followers, or job position doesn’t matter either. QC Makeup Academy always make you feel respected and welcome. Personally, my makeup skills are now at a completely different level when compared to where they were at 3 years ago!

You’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Airbrush Makeup Workshop. Why do you feel that these additional skills and qualifications will make your makeup career all the more successful?

I firmly believe that all of QC’s programs properly complement one another. For example, skincare is very important because it helps you understand how to take care of your canvas. With this basic knowledge, it’s easier to personalize the makeup routine for each client, since everyone has different skin types and needs.

The Pro Makeup Workshop goes into more detail about advanced makeup techniques, concepts, and applications. This next-level program is meant to help you perfect your skills and build upon what you learned in the MMA Course. Finally, the Airbrush Workshop adds yet another level of professionalism to your craft, both in beauty makeup and SFX makeup.

I can’t stop learning – this career path is just so fascinating to me!

How useful have the various course materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been? In what ways have they helped you grow stronger as an MUA?

At this moment of my life, I am mainly a social media makeup artist. But I also book the occasional freelance job for film, bridal, or special event makeup on the weekends. The knowledge I’ve gotten from QC Makeup Academy has helped me understand when to use certain makeup techniques, according to the occasion.

Like I said before, social media makeup is designed for a self-controlled, 2D environment. Real-life makeup, on the other hand, is designed for a high-definition, 3d environment. You can’t control the angles in which your artistry will be showcased. So, you need to understand the proper techniques… because there’ll be no place to hide imperfections!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from QC Makeup Academy’s professional training?

With QC Makeup Academy, you learn:

  • The importance of skincare;
  • Proper makeup application for every kind of client;
  • Lifesaving makeup techniques;
  • How to treat your clients;
  • And more.

But to me, the MOST important lessons I’ve learned have been about proper hygiene and etiquette as an MUA. This knowledge alone elevates you to another level! Most aspiring makeup artists nowadays educate themselves strictly with YouTube videos.

However, beyond the popular trends and/or makeup tutorials available on social media, it’s very uncommon to find educational videos discussing topics such as taking care of your makeup kit, sanitizing your tools, etc. Being a makeup artist is so much more than simply applying makeup to another person’s face. This type of education is essential for success.

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC Makeup Academy?

QC Makeup Academy will give you the basic tools you need to pursue a successful career as a makeup artist. It doesn’t matter which area you want to grow in professionally – they cover it all!

Once you have these tools, it’ll then be up to YOU to become the artist you want to be. For that, you will need to dedicate time and practice. My personal experience has been amazing. I couldn’t be more grateful for what QC has done for me. As a Student Ambassador, I want to help others follow their own dreams.

You have over 266k followers on TikTok and over 17k on YouTube. What advice would you give to new MUAs for growing their online presence and increasing their following?

My social media channels were never about having a big following or becoming popular. They started as a personal space where I could express myself and what I love. They’ve helped me heal and make it through a very difficult time in my life.

What I can tell makeup artists who want to grow their social media is to NEVER let the numbers control you. Don’t let the views discourage you, or the likes make you feel as if you are not talented enough. Just do what you love and the numbers will come eventually.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I believe there is no small job. Everything can give you experience and knowledge to grow as an artist!

To start, I want to retire from our job at the family business and dedicate myself full-time to makeup artistry. I’m currently working towards this now. I also want to travel to congresses, take makeup master classes around the world, and eventually, teach them myself. Additionally, I’d like to dedicate more time to my social media and explore different makeup techniques I haven’t tried yet. I’d also love to learn even more about Special FX makeup.

I guess, when I think about it, I just want to try it ALL!

What is the #1 piece of advice that you’d like to give to aspiring makeup artists who are thinking of pursuing a professional career in 2021?

I want to inspire others to never give up on themselves. It’s is never too late to pursue your dream career! There’s honestly no better feeling than dedicating your life to something that makes you happy and that you have passion for. You’ll never get tired of it.

If this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, just go with it! QC Makeup Academy will give you all the tools you need, but it’ll be up to you to figure out how you want to use them.

Special Effects Makeup for Film

By Education, Special Effects Makeup No Comments

Special effects makeup for the film is a behemoth in and of itself. It takes the right training, practice, and dedication to truly master it. After all, it’s a whole different ballgame than SFX makeup for, let’s say, the stage. Special effects makeup for the film not only needs to be subtler; it must also be realistic and consistent.

If your dream is to do makeup for Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and horror movies, we won’t mince words: you have a lot of work ahead of you. Luckily, QC Makeup Academy’s online Special FX Makeup Course will teach you everything you need to know! With the help of your expert tutor, you’ll hone every last skill needed to not only work as an SFX artist in the film industry – but truly thrive!

film cre

4 Critical Lessons You’ll Learn in QC’s Special Effects Makeup Course

Believability

The film is far less forgiving than theater. In theater, there’s a considerable distance between the actor and the audience. In order to bridge that gap, the actor’s makeup will often be exaggerated. This way, even the people in the back row can see it. A perk to this is that the actor’s makeup can also afford to have a couple of little mistakes or inconsistencies here and there. Chances are, the audience will be too far away to notice.

On camera, though, people absolutely will notice. Typically, special effects makeup for film needs to be realistic. The goal is for the audience to suspend disbelief – if even for a single second – and truly believe for a moment in time that the actor really is this character you’ve created. If it’s obvious that the wound, blood, or character design is fake, the audience will be pulled out of the experience.

Continuity

Continuity is another major detail when it comes to special effects makeup for film. A single scene will often be shot dozens of times, from multiple different angles. A 10-minute scene might take hours to get shoot. Often, you’ll be on set for long periods of time, and you’ll need to be ready at any moment to be called in for touch-ups. Sometimes, once the movie has wrapped, actors will even need to come back to re-shoot particular scenes.

One way or another, your job will be to make sure that the actor’s makeup looks EXACTLY the same from one take to the next. Take photos of the actor’s makeup for every scene, as well as after any alteration is made to the look. When waiting on set, continue to keep an eye on the action. If you need to jump in, touch up, or fix something, you’ll want to make sure it aligns exactly with how the makeup looked in the scene (prior to the director calling cut).

Movie watchers are sticklers for continuity errors, so do everything you can to prevent them from finding any.

MUA touching up special effects makeup on forearm

Attention to Detail

High-definition cameras will pick up quite literally every last pore on the actor’s face. If your makeup application has flaws, this means the cameras will pick up on that, too. Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to paying attention to detail is the progression of the film’s plot.

For instance, say the actor’s character is in an altercation and gets hit in the face. This fight results in a bruise around their eye. As the story continues, the audience is meant to believe that time is passing the same way it naturally would in real life. This means that the character’s bruise can’t simply disappear, as if it never happened. It also can’t stay exactly the same either.

Instead, you’ll need to age the bruise accordingly so that it looks like it’s realistically healing and fading away.

The Production Process

You can’t just read a script, come up with a special effects makeup look, and then apply it to the actor on the day of shooting. There’s a LOT more that first needs to go into this process!

For starters, with the script breakdown and makeup charts to guide you, you’ll develop looks that accurately coincide with the story itself. Then you’ll need to test your designs on the actors and extras who have been assigned to you. Keep in mind that your makeup looks will need to work not only from the actor’s perspective but in terms of wearability and longevity as well.

After that, your makeup looks will need to undergo a camera test. This will help ensure that the makeup transfers properly on camera and looks the way it’s supposed to. Once production advances, you’ll then be able to refer back to the script, makeup charts, and test photos for each actor and each scene.

Other Reasons Why You Should Take QC’s Special Effects Makeup Course

Perhaps the course itself sounds perfect, but the idea of attending in-person doesn’t. With the pandemic, in-person school isn’t exactly the safest, most convenient, or most affordable option right now. Well, we got even better news for you: you won’t have to worry about any of this with QC Makeup Academy!

Not only is our Special Effects Makeup Course done entirely online; it’s also completed at your own pace! There’ll be no need to worry about traveling to get to school or potentially exposing yourself to COVID-19. You also won’t need to move your schedule around to meet deadlines.

With a full 2 years to complete your course, you can learn everything you need to know right at home – and take as little or as much time as you need!

In case all of this wasn’t awesome enough, here are a few more perks to enrolling with QC:

  • Your tutor will be a special effects makeup expert with decades of experience in the industry.
  • After each unit, you’ll receive extensive, personalized audio feedback from your tutor.
  • Assignments include plenty of hands-on training, in order to give you real-life experience with both models and SFX products.
  • You’ll have an entire community of fellow QC students and grads to connect with in the Virtual Classroom on Facebook.
  • QC’s affordable tuition rates are substantially cheaper than you’d find at a brick-and-mortar school – and you’re even offered a low monthly payment plan if you don’t want to pay everything upfront.
  • With an A+ ranking from the Better Business Bureau and over 35 years of pioneering the online learning experience, QC Makeup Academy is known for being the best of the best.

QC Makeup Academy Angelica Hamlin feature image

Ambassador Feature: Angelica Hamlin

By Student Ambassador No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I’m a thirty-something happy wife, and a blessed mommy of a little princess. Over the last 11 years, my entire work history has been in the beauty industry, ever since I first earned my cosmetology license.

Before we moved to Oregon, I even owned my own beauty salon in California. I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. For me, beauty has always been a part of that art. Hair, nails, makeup – you name it!

You have years of experience and training in cosmetology. Why did you decide to pursue additional training in order to become a professional makeup artist?

Even with all of my education from cosmetology school, I felt I was never taught enough about makeup. I’d learned all about sanitation and the very basics of makeup application, but I wanted to learn more! I wanted makeup classes that would teach me how to put products together with precision and proper technique, and how to make them stay put on a client’s skin.

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and mortar school?

Originally, I chose online makeup classes because at the time, I lived very far any brick-and-mortar option. That turned out to be a perfect choice because I found out soon after that we’d be welcoming our little girl into the world! I really appreciated the flexibility of online learning and the option to complete makeup classes on my own schedule.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

To be honest, I shopped around a lot in my quest to find the perfect school. When I discovered QC Makeup Academy, some of the top reasons that influenced my decision to enroll were:

  • The affordable payment options;
  • The many different courses to choose from;
  • And the chance to be tutored by celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson.

I’m not sure it gets much better than that! I just knew the quality of the education was going to be what I needed.

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience  with this program, and how would you say it helped you grow as a makeup artist?

My experience with the Master Makeup Artistry Course was fabulous! Even when I came to units that taught skills I never thought I’d be able to learn, they were presented in such a way that I was able to easily understand them. I could learn how to practice them properly, until I got it right.

Sometimes, with online courses, you might be doing something wrong and never even know it. But with QC’s classes, you’re able to get feedback and critiques from your tutor right away, after each unit is submitted. That was invaluable to me!

You’ve also graduated from QC’s Virtual Makeup mini course. Why do you feel that this additional skill-set will make your makeup career even more successful, especially  during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Since most of my freelance makeup work is for brides and fashion photographers, everything on my books was cancelled when the pandemic began. When I saw that QC Makeup Academy offered a Virtual Makeup Training Course, I knew I needed that education.

I didn’t have any clue how to provide a virtual service! But now I do. Even once things pick back up again in my area, I’ll continue to offer virtual services as part of my business. Virtual services allow for an even wider reach of potential clients, and it’s a very manageable thing for me to offer from home!

You’re currently working on completing the Skincare Course. In your opinion, why should makeup artists have proper skincare knowledge?

It’s important to have a good knowledge of the canvas you’re working with, in order to be able to choose the best products. For example, I work with a lot of photographers. During a photoshoot, the elements can be very different and with hot, harsh lights.

I need to know how a model’s skin is going to react to every product I put on her. This way, the makeup stays on her skin throughout the entire shoot. It won’t get oily or shiny from all of the heat.

How useful have the various materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been for your QC Makeup Academy courses?

Everything has been extremely helpful! I still have my books in a small library in my home office. I’ll often refer back to them if I feel a bit rusty on a topic. The assignments also really helped to get me out of my “comfort zone”.

They challenged me to try things I hadn’t done, and I really enjoyed that. And, of course, we already know how much I appreciated having tutor feedback so quickly after each unit. It was like having someone right next to me to help!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup classes?

Consistency and blending have to be two of the most important things I’ve learned from makeup classes. I had no idea how much they would affect every single makeup look I would ever try to apply!

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s  the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC Makeup Academy?

I want all aspiring makeup artists to know that they have a chance to get a great education, no matter their schedule or situation! The makeup and beauty courses offered at QC Makeup Academy are perfect for everyone.

From busy mamas who want a career with flexibility, to high school students who want to pursue a career in a field they’re passionate about. From the retiree who dreams of learning something new and creative, to the seasoned cosmetologist who still has more to learn!

These makeup classes are for everyone and provide amazing education opportunities.

How has your career as a beauty professional been affected by COVID-19? In what ways have you adjusted to this ‘new normal’?

When the pandemic hit, I lost most of my bookings for weddings and fashion photoshoots almost instantly. Some of the brides have simply pushed their wedding dates another year out, but so many just cancelled altogether.

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do. But since then, I’ve started using my knowledge and live demonstration of skills to continue earning an income virtually. It even pushed me to get outside of my comfort zone and start working closely with a beauty brand, to help generate online sales.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

Ideally, I would love to build a brand that my daughter could step into and take over when (and if) she wants to. I also align that with another goal of creating a flexible career for myself that allows me to spend quality family time with her and my husband.

What is your #1 piece of advice that you’d like to give to aspiring makeup artists who are thinking of pursuing a professional career in this field in 2021?

I’d like to simply tell aspiring artists that this is a perfect time to start!

There are so many opportunities right now for you to build the makeup career you truly want. Get creative with it. Let QC Makeup Academy give you all of the tools and provide the education to be successful in whatever you want your dream career to be!

5 Hot Makeup Trends Kicking Off 2021!

By Makeup Trends No Comments

Last year was a total game-changer when it came to popular makeup trends. Now, as we settle into 2021, it’s interesting to see these trends continue to dominate the beauty world. Thanks to COVID-19 still hanging around like a bad guest who can’t take a hint, it comes as no surprise that many of the fads kicking off the New Year are ones that first went viral during 2020’s lockdown.

The thing to remember about makeup trends is that they’re ever-changing. Something can be viral one moment and then fade into obscurity the next. Especially when you throw a pandemic into the mix, it goes without saying that trying to predict this year’s upcoming makeup trends is – in some ways – anyone’s guess. It’ll probably depend on whether things go back to the way they were (pre-COVID) and when.

All that to be said, what we can tell you are 5 of the hottest makeup trends that have helmed the game so far this year!

5 Makeup Trends 2021 is Seeing So Far…

1. Eyes on the Prize

Eye makeup has been a fundamental trend, in one way or another, since makeup was first invented. But since the pandemic began, it quickly made its way to the top of our priority list! After all, we all still need to wear face masks whenever we leave the house. With our eyes being the only real focal point on our face these days, it only makes sense to use this as an opportunity to make a statement.

Whether it’s a mysterious smoky eye, technicolor lids, or an out-of-the-box liner design – making the eyes POP is already continuing to be a major trend in 2021.

2. Lashes for Days

To build on the above, what would eye makeup be without killer lashes to go with it? Two ways that lashes are already proving to be big in 2021 are through sky-high falsies and colorful mascara. Elevate your glam glow, make that smoky eye even sultrier, or funkify your vibe. Play around and make your lashes stand out from the crowd!

3. Keep it Simple

While plenty of makeup enthusiasts are not letting COVID-19 get in the way of their full-faced looks, just as many people have embraced the ‘less is more’ approach over the past year. Limited contact with the outside world drastically decreased the need to get as dolled up as we did before. Being cooped up indoors all day reiterated the importance of a proper skincare routine.

As a result, a lot of people took pause, stepped back, and learned to embrace their natural beauty. A minimalistic approach to makeup swept the globe – and this trend hasn’t gone anywhere yet! So far in 2021, we’re still seeing less contouring and more ‘skinimalism’ (as cleverly coined by Pinterest).

Personally, we’re in LOVE with this trend and can only hope it’s here to stay!

4. Long Live the Lips

Just because we have to hide our smiles behind face masks doesn’t meant that lip makeup isn’t still a major trend. Zoom calls and live feeds are more relevant than ever, after all! One trend that already looks to be a huge hit in 2021 is lip makeup – particularly, lip stains.

This definitely makes sense. Long-wear lip products that can hold their own under your mask are in high demand, and lip stains are known to achieve this desired result. Just remember that your lips need hydration, too. If your makeup is matte and drying, simply swipe some lip balm on before application.

5. Nostalgia Galore

We’ve seen throwbacks to previous decades for as long as makeup has been around. But for some reason, ever since the pandemic began, nostalgic makeup of days’ past has become a booming trend. Maybe it’s because, with so much time spent indoors and by ourselves, it’s made us long for simpler times.

Or maybe it’s just because all of these nostalgic looks are totally awesome. (Which, let’s admit it, they are.)

Either way, 2021’s makeup scene has been kicking off with odes to the past. Ariana Grande, for example, has played a major role in bringing 1960s fashion and beauty into the modern day through her music video, “Positions”.

There’s also been a particular love these days for all things 80s and 90s. Maybe it’s because Friends finally got booted from Netflix… who knows? But as a 90s baby with a love of 80s glam, I’m definitely not complaining. In terms of throwback fads, I have to say, I admittedly love this one the most.

Building Your Makeup Portfolio During COVID-19

By Your Makeup Career No Comments

As a professional makeup artist who’s new to the game, building your makeup portfolio is critical. This portfolio must reflect high-quality work that accurately represents who you are and which services you can provide to clients.

But while there are tons of tips and tricks out there to help you develop your makeup portfolio under normal circumstances, what happens once a global pandemic has been thrown into the mix?

With in-person contact at a minimum, it might seem impossible to build a high-quality makeup portfolio. But this couldn’t be further from the truth! The fact is, there are still ways to gather the material you need. It’ll just be a matter of getting a bit craftier and staying on the safe side.

Here are just 3 examples of what I’m talking about…

3 Ways You Can Build Your Makeup Portfolio During the Pandemic

1. Utilize Your Virtual Beauty Clients

Virtual makeup and skincare services became quite the hot commodity over the course of 2020. After all, many people didn’t want to leave the safety of their homes (or straight up couldn’t). So, beauty professionals needed to find a new way to offer their expertise in a way that works for everybody.

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, there are plenty of online services you can offer instead of in-person ones. For instance, you can provide online consultations. Another option is to teach virtual makeup lessons or even develop personalized skincare regimens for clients.

The best part? These can all be done from the comfort of your couch!

What better way to illustrate to prospective clients that you’re capable of providing them with beneficial virtual services than to prove it in your online makeup portfolio?

Whenever you work with a client, ask them to take a high-quality photo of their full face prior to getting started with you. Then, once your work with them is complete, ask them to take a second photo of their full face. This second image should clearly show the difference your services have made when compared to the first picture.

Tips for Taking Photos

Most people use some sort of smart phone these days, and the majority of them have excellent cameras capable of taking high-quality photos. When requesting these photos, provide a few tips/requirements for the images, such as:

  • The photo is taken in front of a white or neutral background. There should be no clutter or anything else to distract the eye from the focus of the photo.
  • The photo is an up-close shot of their full face. From the top of their head to the bottom of their chin should all be within the frame.
  • The photo should not be a selfie. Advise your client to rest their phone or camera on a sturdy surface and set a timer. Selfies are never recommended within a makeup portfolio, as they aren’t very professional-looking.
  • There should be good lighting. Prompt your client to take a photo in a brightly lit room, or during a relatively sunny day, in front of a window. They don’t need fancy ring lights to get the job done. But the picture shouldn’t be taken in a dark or dim space either.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to request – in writing – for your client’s expressed consent to use their image on your website’s makeup portfolio, social media pages, etc. Ensure that the permission provided by the client is likewise given to you in writing so you can keep it in your records.

2. Ask Members of Your Household to Be Your Models

If you live with someone else, you might have the perfect model sitting right there! So long as they agree to it, you can easily do a few different makeup looks on their face, take some nice pictures, and add them to your makeup portfolio.

If you have more than one member of your household who would be willing to be your model, take advantage of this! Remember: variety is key in your portfolio. In order to demonstrate to potential clients that you’re a makeup artist of many skills, you’ll want to highlight the different techniques, looks, and specializations in your repertoire.

For example, if you live with people of different ages and/or skin tones, this alone can give you plenty to work with! Additionally, if you happen to live with a man and he’d be willing to let you put makeup on him, this could be an amazing contribution to your portfolio, too.

3. Take Part in a (Safe) Stylized Photoshoot

There are countless reasons to take part in a stylized photo shoot, especially as you’re building your career. Not only can they help you grow your network and gain hands-on experience in the field; they’re also a great way to receive professional-quality images for your makeup portfolio, in exchange for your services.

Depending on the severity of the COVID-19 risks in your area, or physical distancing regulations, paying clients might be in shorter supply right now. By volunteering your expertise for a stylized photo shoot, however, you can continue doing what you love while also getting more material that showcases your work!

Tips for Working Together Safely

Just make sure to keep in mind the safety measures that you and everyone else participating in the shoot will need to abide by. Enforcing these protocols and sticking to them is very important since it’s the only way to make sure everyone is truly staying safe.

Everyone should be wearing a mask whenever possible and washing/sanitizing their hands regularly. On top of maintaining a minimum distance of at least 6 feet apart from one another, there should also be a limited number of people working in one space at a given time.

All that to be said, in the meantime, there’s no reason why you still can’t continue to grow your business, develop your makeup portfolio, and gain real-world experience. You simply need to explore the options available to you and always ensure that you (and everyone around you) are making health and safety the top priority!

Even though 2020 is now a thing of the past, we’re not out of the woods yet. While the bright light that is the end of COVID-19 is finally starting to be seen on the horizon, we all need to work together and do our part to get there. But so long as we do that, the world will one day return to normal.

QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Luzaan De Bruyn, feature image

Ambassador Feature: Luzaan de Bruyn

By Graduate Feature, Student Ambassador No Comments

e

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi there! My name is Luzaan, and I am a mother of three beautifully naughty children. I was born in South Africa but have been residing in New Zealand for four years now. I am also graduate (and current student) of the AMAZING QC Makeup Academy!

Fun fact about me: I continually have to study because if I don’t, I get depressed. This has resulted in me having more than 9 qualifications – and I’ve only been speaking English for 4 years now!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

As a child, I never felt like I belonged anywhere. This resulted in chronic Major Depressive Disorder. I followed one career after the other; always yearning for more, yearning to belong, and yearning to find my passion.

It wasn’t until I accidentally stumbled upon QC Makeup Academy and their online makeup classes that I felt a strong sense of belonging and passion. I immediately knew that being a professional makeup artist is what I am supposed to be doing with my life!

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and-mortar school? Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

To be completely raw and honest, I was skeptical at first. At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about skincare, makeup, or the beauty industry in general. I found it hard to believe that you could learn everything you needed to become a successful, working professional – entirely online.

I researched QC Makeup Academy and their online makeup courses day and night for more than a week before I took the “leap of faith” and enrolled. Thinking back, it was the scariest decision I ever made. But now, it’s the BEST decision I’ve ever made!

My personal reasons for pursuing my makeup training online include:

  • As a mother, I need to be able to study at my own pace and in the comfort of my own home. This was very important to me.
  • QC Makeup Academy gives you 2 years to complete a course, which was a huge selling point for me.
  • They are an internationally-recognized, accredited school. On its own, this speaks volumes.
  • QC is more than just a school – it’s like its own little family. The staff, tutors, and access to the Virtual Classroom on Facebook all provide you with the kind of support that only a true makeup family can give.
  • A lot of QC’s programs will provide you with a free makeup kit as part of the course materials. This ensures that you can jump straight in without worrying about having to first build your kit before you can start the course.

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program, and how would you say it helped you grow as an MUA?

Oh, goodness – if only you could see what my makeup skills were like before I enrolled in the MMA Course. Let’s just say, they were NON-EXISTENT!

As soon as I received my enrollment details, I immediately jumped into the course. Boy, was I left in complete amazement! The beautifully-made, interactive videos explain every single ‘why’, ‘why not’, and ‘how to’ you could possibly think of. Not to mention, the hands-on assignments are absolutely astonishing!

The magnificent, legendary Nathan Johnson was my tutor during my course. He left me in awe! His feedback constantly pushed me when I needed it. He was honest, raw, and most importantly, real. Being tutored by one of the most amazing celebrity makeup artists in the business was something no brick-and-mortar school could ever replace.

Before my professional training, I was a mother who applied her foundation with her hands, didn’t know blending existed, and thought eyeshadow should be tapped on. Thanks to QC Makeup Academy, I finished my training a professional master makeup artist. I am now is a freelancer who is well-known in our community.

I’ll ALWAYS be forever grateful to QC, their online makeup courses, and Nathan Johnson!

You’ve also graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop and Special FX Makeup Course. Why do you feel these additional qualifications are beneficial to your career, and how have you incorporated them into your business services?

The Airbrush Makeup Workshop was extremely important to me because I wanted to be able to offer my clients the choice between hand-applied and airbrushed makeup services. I wanted to be a flexible artist; able to provide my brides with different options.  especially seeing as I am the only certified Airbrush makeup artist in my area.

QC Makeup Academy’s airbrush training opened doors which I never knew existed. In fact, now that I have this specialized skill, I’m actually the only certified airbrush MUA in my area!

Soon after completing that program, I decided after to enroll in the Special FX Makeup Course as well, due to my fascination for Halloween and all things gory. Since becoming an International Special FX Makeup Professional, I have been able to offer Halloween SFX makeup to many clients. I’ve also been contracted as the primary SFX artist for a special effects makeup magazine, as well as a medical magazine.

You’re currently working on completing the Virtual Makeup Training mini course. Why do you feel that being able to provide virtual services to clients is so valuable, especially during a global pandemic?

Being able to offer my services during a global pandemic is truly invaluable. COVID-19 has caused a financial loss for so many people. Sadly, there are countless professions that can no longer sustain themselves, since they rely solely on in-person services.

As a makeup artist, being able to offer virtual services as part of my business allows me to open a completely different door and utilize different opportunities. Even looking beyond the pandemic, we live in a day and age where people prefer doing things digitally. The rush of life lately doesn’t always allow people to take time out of their day to attend in-person appointments. Businesses need to be able to adapt to this and offer alternate solutions and services.

I’m now able to offer virtual makeup services in the comfort of my client’s home, at a time they prefer. A complete lockdown won’t affect my service. This wouldn’t have been the case without my virtual makeup training from QC Makeup Academy!

How useful have the various materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been for your courses with QC Makeup Academy?

Where do I start? Let me just say, QC Makeup Academy is – hands-down – the best of the best!

The materials alone are so invaluable. I truly don’t believe I would have become half the makeup artist I am today without my course materials. Although they were informative, they were never overwhelming. Even though English isn’t my first language, and I only started learning English 4 years ago, I still found the texts and videos easy to understand.

Even now, I still regularly go through my materials to ensure I always stay on top of every and any situation I find myself in. The assignments you’re given are really hands-on, and presented in a way that betters you as both a makeup artist and a person. Personally, I enjoyed every single minute of every single assignment!

Nathan Johnson has been my tutor in every course so far. He is such an incredible human being, mentor, and makeup artist. His feedback has pushed me to better my skills, to keep learning, and to keep growing. Nathan truly is the salt of this earth!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup classes?

This question actually made me chuckle because I heard Nathan’s voice in my head as soon as I read it. Practice, practice, practice! Makeup is an art that can only be achieved by practice.

You’ve recently joined QC Makeup Academy’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC?

QC Makeup Academy goes beyond simply teaching you what you need to know. Through the friendships I’ve made with my fellow peers, I’ve gained a family I never knew I needed. Taking that leap of faith and enrolling in QC’s online makeup courses was the best decision I ever made. Now it’s your turn to make the best decision of your life!

How has your career as a makeup artist been affected by COVID-19? In what ways have you adjusted to this ‘new normal’?

When the pandemic reached us, my freelance makeup career was still pretty new. I had bookings that got cancelled (understandably). My three-year-old is immunocompromised, so it was incredibly important to keep her safe. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, I tested positive for COVID-19 and had to indefinitely postpone the little bookings I had left.

Fortunately, after 28 days of being sick, I tested negative and was able to be released from home isolation. It was then that I decided to offer virtual tips and tricks to my clients, family, and friends. Not long after, I got flooded with virtual bookings – and I’ve been busy ever since! I still freelance and often go to clients directly. Only now, I wear a mask and ensure that my clients are 100% healthy before accepting a booking.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I thought long and hard about my answers for this question. Then I realized that my biggest top goal is to keep growing with QC Makeup Academy! My passion for the beauty industry and for QC is what drives me. My only wish is to be a makeup artist that makes QC Makeup Academy proud!

(Oh, and I also want to work in the film industry eventually!)

In your opinion, what is the secret to success as a makeup artist?

Never ever stop learning. The makeup industry is continually evolving and you can never be too good to learn. Reach for the top because that is what you deserve!
