Halloween Makeup Contest 2018: Treat Category - QC Makeup Academy

Thank you to everyone who participated in QC’s Halloween Makeup Contest, Treat category. Below is Azzi’s critique of the five finalists. Click here to view Nathan’s critique on the Trick category finalists.

Here’s what Azzi was looking for:

Effort: Detailed, high impact makeup that works seamlessly with the hair, costume styling, and accessories, creating an overall striking and dramatic look.

Skill/Technique: Clean, and sophisticated makeup techniques, attention to detail and high-pigmented products that capture your sci-fi or fantasy character.

Originality/ Concept: Unique makeup look that pushes your character to the next level.

Photo Quality: Nice clean, crisp image that is of great quality – something you would see in a makeup artist’s portfolio. Nothing blurred, out of focus or with poorly thought-out backgrounds (certainly no bedroom clutter in the background). And less is more with skin retouching and photoshop – and yes, I will be able to tell!

Story: Tell the story behind your creative, your way. What is your design concept and why? Where did you source inspiration? You don’t need to write an essay, but a few paragraphs will help give some context to your look.

Fantastic effort, great choice of pigment and a vibrant, creative Halloween look! I would have loved to see the character come to life with some extra costume details (e.g. hair, shirt, accessories).

Nassirah the Dragon Warrior.

Born in the fiery depths of Waterdeep, Nassirah battled her way through life, overpowering every competitor to become the ultimate champion. With her hoard of fire-breathing beasts, she dominated every plain, battled every man and destroyed every beast to become the one true Dragon Warrior.

Very creative, excellent skill and the ‘mask’ feature is beautifully executed. Fantastic, vibrant glitter lips, but the texture could be more evenly applied across the lips. Would have loved to see the character come to life with some extra costume details (e.g. hair, shirt, accessories).

Tremendous effort, skill, and attention to detail. Good use of colour and pigment. Creatively, the concept could have been elevated to a more unique adaptation of the classic feline face paint, and costume/accessories could elevate the overall look to the next level.

Artist: Steffanie Wilson

Story

As the Autumn breeze harvests up the energies & death of the year, a fairy is born to bring everyone joy, positivity, and of course, pumpkin spice. She soars high above the woodland forests, painting the trees colors of greens, oranges & reds. She picks the beautiful flowers & pumpkins then puts them on her head. If you’re lucky enough to see her before Halloween night, she’ll gift you a pumpkin before she sets off on her flight.

Vibrant, creative and excellent attention to detail. Love the ‘fall/fire’ concept, which is unique and eye-catching. Beautiful accessories and overall look simply ‘jumps’ off the page. Just wish Steffanie had used a clear, white background or a closer crop.

Due to unique circumstances, one of the five finalists’ entry was pulled out of the contest. Steffanie’s submission was entered to the final round instead.

Artist: Annette Silvestre

Story

Unicorns are real! In my daughter’s stories and dreams. I love when we get to fantasize about how majestic they are. For my entry, I decided to bring them to life. Who doesn’t love unicorns?! I made the prosthetic horn, put one-day hair colour in, and used a crazy amount of glitter. Enjoy!

Beautiful attention to detail, vibrant use of colour and excellent skill. The unicorn concept is beautifully executed, one small suggestion is to make it even more unique and add a ‘quirky Halloween twist’ to the unicorn idea (e.g. half skulls, half unicorn, etc.)

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Annette for winning the 2018 Halloween Makeup Contest, Treat category!

Annette wins a Pinrose x Sephora Collection’s “Clever Devil Scented Lip Shimmers Set”, and a Tarte Cosmetics’ “Love, Trust & Fairy Dust Eyeshadow Palette”.

Thank you once again to all the artists that submitted entries for this contest! And to all the finalists, you should all be very proud of your work!
