Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Mariaisabel Johnston. I am a full time geoscientist working in the energy business. I have a big passion for makeup arts. I always dreamed about having my own cosmetic line and in 2017 we decided to start our own line called Spiced Cosmetics.
Why did you decide to start a career in makeup artistry?
Since I was a child I was captivated by the beauty industry. I decided several years ago to learn more about make up arts and enrolled in a makeup academy. After graduating with a degree in Geosciences, I started working in the Energy industry and I felt there was something missing from my life โ I felt I needed to SPICE IT UP.
I wanted to enroll in a professional in-class makeup school but my busy schedule wouldnโt allow it. After months of searching I found QC Makeup Academy online. QC makeup academy allows you complete the master makeup artistry course at your own pace and complete classes and course work online.
So you just launched your own cosmetics line! Whatโs been the most rewarding part about starting up a makeup business?
The most rewarding thing is developing products that I totally love and that customers love, as well. I get great satisfaction in seeing our customers enjoy the Spiced Cosmetics products.
Whatโs been the most challenging part about running a cosmetics company?
The most challenging part is overcoming the fear of failure. It is also a risk to invest in an idea, then take that concept and develop it into a saleable product. It took many hours to develop a quality makeup product that we were proud to offer to consumers.
Can you tell us what inspired you for the products you decided to make?
Our inspiration for the line comes from my background in Geology. Since my work involves studying rocks and minerals, we decided that we wanted the Spiced Cosmetics line to be mineral-based.
The colors of the mineral powders are so bright and colorful, and have a lot of similarity to spices. The pieces of the puzzle finally came together and thatโs how the idea of SPICED COSMETICS began. A spicy look using spicy colors that are made out of minerals.
If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would use Spiced Cosmetics mineral powder in Raspberry Spice.
What do you think the future holds for you, both as a makeup artist and business owner?
It is hard to predict what the future holds. As a makeup artist and a business owner I hope retailers start getting interested in Spiced Cosmetics products and that the line can offer a bigger variety of products to its customers. We would love to expand the Spiced Cosmetics brand and product line!
