Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Olivia. I’m a 20 year old cat mom living in small town Lehi, Utah. I am surrounded by the most amazing and supportive friends and family. I owe it all to my mom and my grandparents for raising me to pursue the dreams I’ve always had and the talents that I eventually realized I had.
I’m so thankful for my friends and family EVERY DAY for always trusting me when I try new makeup ideas on them or use them for photos for my Instagram. I am inspired by nature, animals, and other people’s art. I am so blessed to be able to have the opportunity that I have, and I’m so excited to see where this career takes me.
Why did you decide to go into special FX makeup artistry? What about it appeals to you?
I love Special FX makeup, I have always wanted to look into it and learn more. I’m fascinated by the dimensions that everyone has on their faces and the endless things you can do with makeup. I am a freelance makeup artist, so I participate in a lot of photoshoots. I am self-taught in beauty makeup but have always been driven to make art out of someone. That’s why Special FX makeup appeals to me.
Your first Unit got rave reviews by your tutor, Nathan. What skills do you want to learn and refine as you progress throughout the course?
I really would like to learn how to get comfortable with those around me. I get so nervous doing different looks because I worry so much about it not looking exactly like the image I have in my head. I really want to refine my skills (and I think I have learned a lot since the first unit) in blending, highlighting and contouring.
What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before starting your makeup training?
I honestly thought it was going to be more intimidating when I first started! But when it’s your passion, you’re always going to put out your best work. You are not going to settle for less! I try to spend quite some time on each assignment and unit just so I can make sure I’m giving my BEST work.
How do you think QC Makeup Academy has prepared you for working in the field?
I’ve definitely learned a lot about sanitation and being able to determine the contrast between highlights and shadows for different skin tones and types. It has helped me get a better understanding and more experience when working with new people and many different faces!
Were you nervous about enrolling with an online makeup academy over a brick-and-mortar school? Did any misconceptions change as you progressed through the course?
I have done online school before and I think it is such a great choice. You don’t have the same stress as you do in your a brick-and-mortar school. I’m able to work a full time job at the same time as school, and I love it!
What do you hope to accomplish in your makeup career after earning your makeup certification and graduating?
I’m already planning to move to a bigger city to learn prosthetics and learn more about Hollywood makeup. Hopefully, with all the experience that I have learned doing classes with QC, people will see that and hire me!
Finally, if you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I couldn’t do anything without my eyebrows! So definitely eyebrows, and I do my eyebrows with my Morphe brow palette.
