Some ideas to get you started:

  • Black Eyes
  • Zombies
  • Cuts & Bruises
  • Knife injuries
  • Gunshot wounds

Your Tutor & Judge

QC Tutor & Pro SFX Makeup Artist Michele Mulkey will judge the gore category. Here’s her advice for contestants:

Halloween is right around the corner so it’s time to get into the spirit of the holiday with some fantastic GORE!!! This year for the QC Makeup Academy Halloween Contest, I will be judging the Gore category on the following areas—

Realism: Whether it’s a scary demon or a horrific car crash, does the makeup look realistic in nature?

Theme: Does your makeup follow the theme of Gore?

Difficulty: Did the artist use more difficult techniques in their makeup application such as prosthetics, a bald cap, or hand-laid hair in their design?

Originality: Did the artist create an original look and design for their Gore makeup?

Final Look: Was the final look of the Gore makeup enhanced with the use of background, props, costumes, etc..?

Good luck to all contestants in the Gore Makeup category! Now let the blood flow and get your GORE on!!!!

Category #2: Sci-Fi & Fantasy Makeup

With this category, the sky (and your imagination) is the limit! Be as creative, and colorful, as you can, and show us what you’re made of.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Creatures from Greek or Norse Mythology
  • Vampires
  • Goblins
  • Aliens

Your Tutor & Judge

We’re thrilled to announce that QC’s Executive Makeup Artist, Nathan Johnson, will be your judge! Here’s Nathan’s advice for contestants:

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! It is a time when you can make your exterior match your innermost imagination and no one will look at you with anything less than wonder! What a spectacular and creative time of year.

Our annual Halloween contest is upon us again, and I can say, based on last year, I am expecting some pretty amazing things! As the judge for the Sci-Fi & Fantasy category, I wanted to offer up some tips that might help you take the grand prize!

What you can create:

Anything that says sci-fi or fantasy to you! This is your moment to bring to life all of the magic hiding inside your mind. Whether it be something dark and wicked or ethereal and beautiful, put your heart into your work and bring the character to life!

What I would like to see:

Creativity: Use your imagination and make something new. Re-doing a popular YouTube how-to does not count as creativity. Dig into your imagination and create something different, unique, and fantastical.

Skill: Flex your makeup muscles and show off a a wide variety of techniques (blending, contouring, symmetry, use of color, etc). I expect makeup that utilizes ALL your skills.

Photo Quality: Take great images. If you want to have your work seen and celebrated, you will need beautiful, clear images. And, don’t be afraid to bring mood and setting into your image. Don’t just do a great makeup, create a great shoot!!

Fun: I want to see the joy, magic and fantasy you create! Have fun every step of the way!

Bring the magic!!!!

Category #3: Hollywood Characters

When you think of Halloween, does your favorite movie or TV character spring to mind? If so, we want you to evoke that character through makeup! Your character can be evil or sweet, scary or glamorous—or all of the above!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Harley Quinn
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz
  • Freddy Krueger
  • Angelina Jolie in Maleficent
  • Disney characters

Your Tutor & Judge

We are so excited to have QC tutor Azzi Williams as our judge! Here is Azzi’s advice for contestants:

Halloween is the perfect time to get creative and get into character, and what better character to slip into than a fab glam Hollywood one!

I’m super thrilled to be judging the Hollywood Character part of QC Academy’s annual Halloween contest and can’t wait to see the beautiful looks you will create.

What you can create:

Relive a classic starlet look, or get into a more modern movie character, the choices are endless and so is your creativity.

Marilyn, Wonder Woman, Bond Girl, Pris, Charlie Chaplin, Wolverine and more—look through the eras of Hollywood and find the character that you can draw inspiration from—and have fun with it!

What I would like to see:

Effort: Beautiful detailed makeup that works seamlessly with the hair, costume styling and accessories, creating an overall visually stunning look.

Skill: Clean, neat and polished makeup skills, beautiful detailed work, killer contouring and gorgeous, high-pigmented products that capture your Hollywood Character. Of course I’m also expecting those false lashes to be totally on point.

Photo Quality: Nice clean, crisp image that is of great quality—something you would see in a makeup artist’s portfolio. Nothing blurred, out of focus or with poorly thought-out backgrounds (certainly no bedroom clutter in the background. And less is more with skin retouching and photoshop—and yes, I will be able to tell!

Fun: I want to see the joy, magic and horror you create! Have fun every step of the way!

Final note: Take time to really study your favourite Hollywood character. What makeup has the artist used to create their iconic look? Think of the details of colour, texture, pigment and application. Look at the overall mood of your image—have you conveyed the character’s true essence? All the best with your exciting creative makeup journey ahead and have loads of fun creating your look! Finally, GOOD LUCK!
