How It Works

Just as the trends for fashion are determined by each season’s fashion week, so are the trends for hair and makeup. Fashion and makeup go hand in hand, and we want you to create a makeup look that represents Leanne Marshall’s Spring/Summer 2017 Collection.

Leanne Marshall Spring/ Summer 2017 Collection- QC Makeup Academy Makeup Contest

To truly design for a runway show, your look has to be representative of the feeling of the whole collection, not just one design! Follow this link to see the full collection.

Note: The look you see with this collection was designed by Nathan Johnson, and artfully applied by Janell Geason and the Aveda Team. Be sure to use the gowns as reference for designing your look, not the make up that was already created.

  1. Create a face chart with your makeup look, then use the chart to bring the look to life. In terms of how it should look, this is your time to be creative! You can go in any direction you wish, from simple and fresh to more out there — it’s totally up to you. As you design, be sure to consider the designer and the collection, and keep in mind that your look should compliment not overshadow or distract. Learn how to create a face chart here.
  2. On September 19th, we’ll post the semi-finalists on QC Makeup Academy’s Facebook Page where you’ll vote for your favorites by liking the best photos.
  3. On September 22nd, five finalists will be announced on QC’s Facebook page. The five finalists will be chosen based on the number of votes received on Facebook, as well as the judge’s choice.
  4. These finalists will be then be scored by QC Makeup Academy Executive Makeup Artist and Tutor, Nathan Johnson, who has designed the makeup for all of Leanne’s shows for the last decade. He will provide detailed feedback to the top contenders. The grand prize winner, first runner-up and second runner-up will be announced no later than September 26th!

Your Tutor & Judge

QC Tutor Nathan Johnson will be the judge of QC’s Fashion Week Makeup Contest. Here’s a note from Nathan:

Designing for the runway is an incredible opportunity because what you create has the potential to be a major trend. It is also a bit of a balancing act. You have to create a look that compliments the designer’s entire collection and their inspiration, but doesn’t distract and impose your vision. The world is your oyster when it comes to runway, as long as you do not overshadow the designs.

I have had the great privilege of designing the makeup for Leanne Marshall’s NYFW shows for the past decade. I am attaching my original sketch for the eye I designed and an image of the final look that was artfully applied by Janell Geason and the Aveda team (our sponsors). Leanne’s collection was a beautiful balance of structure and flow and we agreed that this look captured it. I offer this to you to show the unlimited possibilities of what you can design. You’ll notice I didn’t use her dominant colors in the eye (I placed it on the lip), but that doesn’t mean you can’t. Just consider the feeling of all the collection and see how your imagination is inspired.

What I’ll be looking for.

Face chart: A face chart that is clear and representative of the look. Feel free to make notes in it explaining your choices if you desire.

Creativity: A creative look that complements the collection. Think outside the box and create something wonderful and new. NYFW is where trends in hair and makeup are born, so make some magic.

Application: Precise application. Remember, this is the global stage for fashion and beauty, so your application should be perfect and symmetrical (unless your look is clearly designed not to be).

Photo quality: Clean, clear, and well lit photos are a necessity. You’re putting so much work into your design, so make sure you capture it well!

Final note: At the end of the day, it’s most important that you have fun. If you remember that the clothing is the star and you are there to complement, it will be easy to succeed! As an added bonus, Leanne and I may happen to send along something extra special to the winner…so do your best!
