It’s time for QC Makeup Academy’s annual Holiday Makeup Contest!

Winter is such a thrilling time for makeup artists – there is truly inspiration everywhere, from the snow adorning the trees to gorgeous sparkling lights!

Now is your chance to stretch those creative muscles for our Holiday Makeup Contest!

This year, we’re going “Night” and “Day”! Create either a daytime makeup look (Winter Splendor) or an evening makeup look (Holiday Glamour)! Use the provided color palettes below to create your look(s)!

There will be an amazing prize for both categories, AND a special prize for QC students and graduates who enter the contest!

How It Works

This contest contains two categories: Winter Splendor and Holiday Glamour. You can enter in one or both categories, the choice is yours — use the color palettes below to complete your look!

Simply complete your makeup look, and submit through the submission form below. Be sure to indicate, from the drop-down list, which category (or categories) you are submitting to.

On December 19th, we’ll post the semi-finalists to QC’s Facebook Page. You’ll vote for your favorites by liking the best photos! The five photos with the most “likes” by December 21st will be our finalists.

The five finalists in each category will be critiqued by the category judge who will also pick the grand prize winner! We will announce the grand prize winner on December 23rd, just in time to put these beautiful looks to use!

Category #1: Winter Splendor

With frost in the air (and on the ground), there are so many gorgeous possibilities for daytime winter looks! We want to see your best “Winter Splendor” daytime makeup look, using this palette:

Your Tutor & Judge

QC Tutor Azzi Williams will judge the Winter Splendor/Day category. Here’s her advice for contestants:

Creativity: How unique and creative is this look? Does it show personality and flair?

Effort: How much effort has the MUA put into the look in terms of using the right shades, textures, effects and finer details that work in synergy with the hair, accessories and overall styling?

Skill: Does the MUA demonstrate a high level of skill – palette selection to suit a daytime holiday look, good symmetry, blending techniques, accuracy and attention to detail? I’m looking for a ‘clean and precise’ finish with no mascara or eyeshadow fall-out, looking for precisely applied false lashes and even lip colour application.

Theme: Is there a clear conceptual connection with the holiday theme of the contest?

Overall Image: Does the makeup complement the overall outfit, hair and model’s features? Is the background clean and creative to suit the holiday theme? Is the photography clear, in focus and taken with good lighting to show the makeup application in the best light? Please avoid over-use of Photoshop retouching and editing, and please also avoid any social or smartphone editing filters!

Category #2: Holiday Glamour

In December, holiday parties are all glitz and glamour! What better time to use those gorgeous gold, deep purple, or dramatic black shades? Please use this color palette to create an evening look:

Your Tutor & Judge

We are thrilled to have QC Makeup Academy tutor and executive makeup artist Nathan Johnson as the judge of our Holiday Glamour/Night category!

What I would like to see:

Creativity: How unique and creative is this look? Does it show personality and flair? Don’t be afraid to take risks and express yourself. I recommend not doing Google searches and copying an existing makeup…be yourself.

Effort: How much effort has the makeup artist put into the look in terms of products used, textures, effects, and finer details?

Skill and Technique: Does the makeup artist demonstrate a high level of skill in terms of honoring the color palette selection, good symmetry, blending techniques, accuracy, and attention to detail? Is it clean and precise with even application on eyes, cheeks, and lips?

Overall Image: Does the makeup complement the outfit, hair, and model’s features? Is the photography clear, in focus, and taken with good lighting? Does the image enhance the artistry? Delicate and tasteful Photoshopping is acceptable, but Instagram and Snapchat filters, and Facetone correcting apps are not.

Overall Transformation: When comparing the before and after photos, how is the overall, final transformation?

Push your limits and have a lot of fun! Remember, evening looks can step into the Avant Garde, so don’t be afraid to take risks…
