Dream of being a professional makeup artist and thinking of pursuing your training through online makeup classes? Then look no further, because you’ve come to the right place! QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Veronika Kelle, is here to reveal 5 industry secrets SHE learned through her online training!

About Me

Hi, everyone! My name is Veronika and I’m a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy. I’ve graduated from 3 of QC’s online makeup classes:

  1. Master Makeup Artistry Course;
  2. Pro Makeup Workshop;
  3. And the Special FX Makeup Course.

I ran my own modeling agency for 15 years. During this time, I organized beauty contests and fashion shows. Additionally, I worked alongside models, photographers, and makeup artists. I also organized photoshoots, castings, and modeling courses.

Obviously, professional makeup was a key factor in all of these. It’s no surprise that it was during this time I fell in love with makeup artistry. So, eventually I decided to learn about it myself and become a certified MUA!

Pursuing Online Makeup Classes with QC Makeup Academy

I began studying professional makeup at QC Makeup Academy back in 2018. Looking back, I can honestly say that without the knowledge I gained through QC’s online makeup courses, I wouldn’t have been able to build my own makeup business.

I feel happy and lucky to have found QC Makeup Academy because they literally changed my life!

The key to success is proper professional knowledge. Plus, of course, you also need a touch of courage. After all, diving into the beauty industry and launching your own business is a big deal! But it’s definitely an endeavor you should not shy away from, because pursuing your dream career is such a rewarding experience.

In this article, I’m going to discuss 5 of the most important industry secrets and skills I’ve learned, thanks to my online makeup classes and professional training with QC Makeup Academy.

So, let’s get started!

Much More Than Makeup

If you’re brand-new to the idea of professional training, you might mistakenly believe that you are ONLY learning how to do makeup through online makeup classes. This, however, is false!

In reality, a proper course from a reputable makeup institution will also arm you with additional, equally-as-critical skills. As a whole, these skills will help you have a truly successful career for the long-term.

Some of these skills I’m talking about include (but are not limited to):

  • Business skills;
  • Customer service skills;
  • Negotiation/contracting skills;
  • Networking skills;
  • Marketing skills;
  • And SO much more!

It’s very important that a professional makeup artist has an extremely rounded-out skill-set. While you absolutely do need to know how to execute flawless applications, the skills mentioned above are just as critical. Without them, you’ll find it difficult to be successful and competitive in the beauty industry.

Luckily, QC Makeup Academy provides you with all of these additional skills! As a result, you’ll gain a huge advantage over your competitors and have a better chance of successfully achieving your career goals!

Each of QC’s online makeup classes has a full business and marketing unit. In this unit, you’ll find all sorts of useful, practical exercises, templates, and marketing/promotion tips. Moreover, you’ll discover how to manage yourself, how to launch your own makeup business, and how to develop your portfolio.

In summary: on top of learning the fundamental makeup theory and core techniques, you’ll also receive plenty of business training. With all of these things combined, you’ll be able to hit the ground running right after you finish your program and earn your internationally-recognized certification!

5 Industry Secrets My Online Makeup Courses Taught Me

Okay, I know – you’ve been eagerly waiting long enough! Now let’s finally take a look at 5 of the most important industry secrets and skills I learned through my online training with QC Makeup Academy…

Secret #1: What’s needed to launch a makeup business of your very own!

Starting your own makeup business is an exciting experience… but it’s also a very challenging one, too. You’ll need perseverance, dedication, confidence, and a lots of planning!

If you want to launch your own business, you’ll need to master the logistics of business operations. Logically, this only makes perfect sense. If you don’t know how to run a business in a savvy, fruitful, and cost-effective way, how likely are you, really, to be truly successful?

My online makeup classes with QC Makeup Academy taught me how to set up my business, manage my finances, and build relationships with vendors. Furthermore, I also learned how to write my business plan from scratch, set up my business, establish my brand, and market my services properly!

Secret #2: The value of professional networking with other makeup and beauty experts!

Professional networking is an essential thing in this industry! During my online makeup courses, I was taught how to find local vendors that I could collaborate with in my area. Such vendors included photographers, videographers, hair stylists, models, etc.

When you pursue your education with QC, you’ll discover how to locate and contact the vendors in your area, too! This is extremely important because working with these vendors will help you build your portfolio, connections, and booking potential. When you’re first starting out, you can involve vendors into your projects and collaborate with them – and I highly recommend doing so.

Networking is a perfect opportunity to build your professional relationships, get more contacts, and increase your likelihood of getting referrals!

Secret #3: Online makeup classes will teach you how to properly set your rates!

How you price your makeup artistry services will depend on many factors, such as:

  • Your location;
  • The demand in your area;
  • Competitors’ prices;
  • Industry standards in your country/city/town;
  • Your level of experience;
  • Whether or not you have professional certification training, etc.

As I worked through my online makeup classes with QC, I learned all the secrets of pricing. I discovered how to estimate professional fees for booking. As part of my courses, I was also provided with loads of useful advice that help me calculate my rates properly.

As a result, I was able to start my career at a distinct advantage!

Secret #4: How to build your makeup portfolio (and the benefits of stylized photoshoots)!

A styled photoshoot is usually designed to inspire creativity in the participants. Moreover, taking part in one helps you to build networks – and importantly, your professional makeup portfolio.

While styled photoshoot are often unpaid, the benefits you’ll reap are still well worth your time and effort. Often, in exchange for your work, you’ll receive high-quality photos from the shoot. In turn, you can use these images in your portfolio, on your business website, for advertising, and to promote yourself.

Thanks to QC’s online makeup classes, I learned a lot about how to build my portfolio. I also learned how to organize stylized photoshoots, which was a HUGE help for me when it came to boosting my makeup business.

QC Makeup Academy’s Portfolio Development Workshop

In particular, I have to take a moment to highlight QC Makeup Academy’s Portfolio Development Workshop. In my opinion, this is one of THE most helpful courses you could ever possibly take! This 2-unit Advanced Course will teach you exactly how to build a professional makeup artistry portfolio that shows potential clients your talent and skills!

Furthermore, you’ll learn how to organize and execute styled shoots, take high-quality photos, and connect with industry contacts as you participate in a series of hands-on, practical assignments.

QC Makeup Academy’s online makeup classes will provide the answers to ALL of these questions – and so much more! They’ll guide you through the maze of job searching, so that getting started and filling up your client book is an easy feat!

Secondly, their vast range of classes allow you to hone niches and discover your specialties. For instance, I’ve always been interested in the exciting world of circus, theater, and movie makeup. That’s why I’d also chosen to enroll in the Special FX Makeup Course after completing my Master Makeup Artistry and Pro Makeup programs.

To build on this, I also wanted the possibility of working in the backstage of a theatrical or movie production. Thanks to QC, this dream has actually since come true! I’ve now worked as a makeup artist for more than one movie production, as well as commercials, passion productions, and countless photoshoots.

What Are The BEST Online Makeup Courses?

By Education, From the Experts, QC Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Wondering what the BEST online makeup courses out there are? Join QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Luisa De Pietra, as she reveals 4 critical criteria that all makeup courses NEED to have in order to be worth your money!

Makeup courses article, Aug 18 2021, Luisa De Pietra headshot

Introduction

Pursuing a career in makeup artistry is currently in high demand. Over the years, more and more people have become drawn to this career path. As a result, more promotions of supposed “makeup courses” have started emerging from the depths of the online world.

It’s of utmost importance that you’re fully aware of the shifty tricks and crafty techniques these sites will pull, in order to try and obtain your money.

My name is Luisa de Pietra and I’m an Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. I am a graduate of both the Master Makeup Artistry Course and Pro Makeup Workshop. Moreover, I’m currently working my way through the Portfolio Development Workshop.

If you are an aspiring makeup artist, perhaps you dream of kick-starting your makeup career – but you’re not quite sure where to start. If so, this article is exactly what you’re looking for! My goal today is to help you in your pursuit of becoming a professional makeup artist. And, of course, that all starts by better understanding what you should be looking for in proper online makeup courses.

So, let’s jump right into it!

First Thing’s First: How to Avoid Shady Online “Makeup Courses”

In an online world that’s increasingly rife with fraudulent schemes and shady dealings, one must have their wits about them when conducting research on the best online makeup course. Vague information, dubious customer reviews, and an overall lack of professionalism should all raise red flags when doing your research.

In many cases, these “makeup courses” will lack the quality of content, research, and development normally invested in a high-quality program. The best makeup courses are not cheap (even though they can can absolutely be affordable). Thus, being thorough and meticulous in your research is essential!

Scamming websites will not hesitate in taking advantage of you. The excitement and eagerness to embark on your makeup course, only to later discover that you’ve been cheated, would frankly be awful. So, in order to avoid such a circumstance, I’d highly recommend forgoing reviews from the company’s own website.

Why? Because scammer companies will more often than not present “customer reviews” written under fake profiles names.

Personally, I did a considerable amount of research before I chose to sign up with QC Makeup Academy. I researched their tutors and made sure that their staff (particularly their Student Support Team) were actual, real people. In fact, I even made contact with a few QC students, so I could ask them about their own experiences learning with QC Makeup Academy.

4 Criteria Your Online Makeup Course Should Meet

Now that we know what to avoid, it’s time to better understand what you should be gravitating towards. These are the top 4 criteria that, in my opinion, all online makeup courses need to meet in order to be worth your time, effort, and money…

1. The tutors/instructors are all legitimate beauty experts who work in the makeup industry.

One of the biggest advantages of becoming an accredited makeup artist with QC Makeup Academy is that you get to be taught by real industry professionals. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of ensuring that the people who are training and guiding you are legitimate beauty experts!

Otherwise, you won’t be learning from the best. It’s that simple.

At QC Makeup Academy, students are under the careful tutelage of reputable names in the beauty world. These tutors are highly experienced. Furthermore, they all have expansive, rich knowledge of the makeup industry.

Whether you’re interested in SFX makeup, editorial, or perfecting your bridal looks – QC Makeup Academy caters to ALL student needs!

Want to learn more about the wide variety of professional beauty and makeup courses offered by QC? Check out our full course breakdowns here!

2. You’re provided with thorough, constructive feedback throughout the entire makeup course.

As a student of QC Makeup Academy, your tutor will give you personalized audio feedback on all of your assignments. I would wager that this form of online learning is even better than the conventional means of teaching, typically found in a group classroom setting.

Why? Because you’re able to receive the personalized attention that can only be provided through one-on-one training! The critiques you receive will be coming from a highly reputable makeup artist. More importantly, all critiques will be tailored to your work, and your work alone.

In my own experience with QC, my tutor was industry veteran and celebrity MUA, Nathan Johnson. Nathan is deeply involved in the beauty industry and has worked diligently to make an unforgettable name for himself. Through his expansive knowledge and experience of the beauty world, I was able to receive comprehensive, invaluable feedback after each and every unit I submitted!

Quite simply: being associated with a makeup school that teaches the core, timeless, and fundamental techniques – rather than “trends” or “hacks” found solely on social media – is what ultimately gives an accredited school like QC Makeup Academy the educational prestige over other online makeup courses.

Makeup courses article, Aug 18 2021, in-post image 3. Happy woman staring at laptop while wearing headphones.

3. There’s some level of business training included in the makeup courses, as well as real-world, hands-on training.

Business Training

As a makeup student, you’re going to be immersed in a creative sphere – full of core techniques, color wheels, brush sizes, complementary lip shades, glitters, and bases. But at QC Makeup Academy, they go to even greater lengths than other institutions to enhance the quality of your learning experience.

You’ll also receive business training, brand-building knowledge, and marketing skills, too!

Lesser-quality makeup courses are unlikely to include this broader education. Instead, they’ll tend to focus only on the creative side of makeup artistry. QC Makeup Academy, on the other hand, recognizes the need to turn out students who are business-savvy professionals.

After all, only with proper business training can you truly succeed in a such highly competitive industry!

Once you earn your internationally-recognized QC certification, you’ll be thrown into a labor market that can be rather tricky to navigate. This is particularly the case if you have no prior experience as a professional MUA. Demand and earnings vary widely. As such, you’ll need basic business skills if you want to be well-established.

QC Makeup Academy equips their students with all the business and marketing skills that are key to success in any field – including the beauty and makeup industry!

Hands-On Experience

You won’t be getting your money’s worth if you enroll in a makeup course that provides no hands-on training. Moreover, you definitely won’t be doing your skill-set any favors either. After all, being a makeup artist is all about actually knowing how to do proper makeup.

Do you see a makeup course where the “training” is limited to nothing but written assignments and/or multiple choice quizzes? If so, then taking this kind of course is a huge mistake. In doing so, you’d be starting your career at a DRASTIC disadvantage.

All of QC’s online makeup courses provide ample real-world practice. You’ll be tasked with completing a wide variety of looks on models with different skin tones and types. Furthermore, you’ll be challenged to do applications on models of different ages and genders as well.

Firstly, these practical assignments will teach you how to correctly apply core makeup techniques. Secondly, they’ll also make you a master of countless makeup styles. As a result, by the time you graduate, you’ll know how to create any look for any type of client!

4. The makeup course provides a variety of learning methods – such as textbook readings, instructional videos, quizzes, and practical assignments.

Top-rated makeup courses will almost ALWAYS include a variety of learning materials. This often includes course textbooks, instructional videos, quizzes, and practical assignments. Luckily, QC Makeup Academy makes all of this accessible to you directly through their Online Student Center!

Trust me: you will derive very little value from a low-quality makeup course that relies solely on passive learning. You may as well be watching tutorials on YouTube.

QC, however, provides an enriched learning experience that relies on tangible, high-quality learning materials. They do this because building a foundation to grow your knowledge and wisdom in the makeup world requires theoretical learning. This is just as important as the practical knowledge you’ll receive, and this institution recognizes that.

How QC Makeup Academy’s Online Makeup Courses Have Met MY Criteria

I strongly believe that the value of an educational institution is reflected in the quality of their students’ work. Before I made the decision to enroll in QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course, I did thorough research.

Student Testimonials

As part of this research, I appraised the work of past and current QC students work. Additionally, I made direct contact with a handful them and asked them to shed some light on their learning experience with QC Makeup Academy. The responses I received were all overwhelmingly positive.

Brand Parternships

I was also extremely impressed with QC’s strong network and social media presence. As well, I was amazed by the partnerships they have with countless big-name brands in the beauty industry. For instance, they’re a MAC Pro eligible school!

On top of this, they also have 21 other esteemed brand partners across North America, the UK, and Australia. The best part of this? Once you become a QC student, you’re automatically eligible for major discounts with all of these companies!

Community Culture

Everything I saw while conducting my research assured me that QC’s makeup courses are truly the best of the best. Ultimately, this was why I decided to pursue my certification training with them. No other beauty school (at least, that I could find) provides such an all-inclusive, tangible approach to quality learning.

They’ve also cultivated a tight-knit student community, which is a major bonus. For example, they run an active Virtual Classroom on Facebook that currently has 2,000 members. This group encouraging you to build your professional relationships and connect with other QC students/grads.

Moreover, their social media pages, Beauty Buzz blog, and exclusive webinars placed them far above any other makeup schools I looked into. To put it simply: QC Makeup Academy provides a legitimate, quality learning experience.

If you’re looking for a school that truly prioritizes their students’ needs and puts YOUR interests first, you need look no further!

Want to see what others have been saying about their experience with QC Makeup Academy? Here are 200+ raving reviews on our Facebook page!

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, choosing an online makeup course can be tricky. The internet can be a difficult place to navigate when you’re frequently exposed to fraudulent schemes and dodgy companies.

Here’s the point: you MUST do your due diligence by conducting thorough research!

Find a makeup school that provides their students with quality learning and feedback from legitimate professionals. This school must offer a range of learning methods, as well as provides students with professional business and networking tools.

With this, my fellow artists, you’ll be well on your way to success in conquering the professional makeup industry!

I Never Thought I’d Have a Makeup Artist Certification. Here’s My Story!

By Industry Spotlight, QC Student Ambassador 3 Comments

For some, earning a professional makeup artist certification is life-changing. Such is the case for QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Jessica Lee. Today, Jessica is here to discuss her difficult past. Plus, she also reveals why pursuing her dream career has turned her life around for the better!

A Little About Makeup Artist Student, Jessica Lee

Hi! My name is Jessica Lee and I’m honored to be a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy. I’m currently enrolled in the Master Makeup Artistry Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Skincare Course. However, I hope to enroll in even more QC programs in the future!

Today, I want to get a little raw and personal with you. I’ll be discussing what I went through in my life and how I’ve gotten to where I am now. Furthermore, I’ll highlight why obtaining my makeup artist certification has been so important to me.

Ultimately, my goal is to show you that if can do it, you most certainly can, too! 💕

Life Before My Training

In order for you to understand why pursuing a makeup artist certification has been so fundamental for me, I need to start at the beginning…

Growing up, I had a close-knit family. My family consisted of my father, mother, older brother, older sister, and me. We lived in one of the poorest areas of Toronto, but my parents never let that stop them.

Eventually, we moved out of that neighborhood. It was at this time that my love of makeup artistry started. I’d often watch my big sister get ready to go out for the night with her friends. All her shimmery pastel eyeshadows grabbed my attention and never let go!

However, there was one problem: I never liked the skin I was in when I was younger. This was perpetuated by the fact that I always had people telling me how different or wrong my skin was.

Racism is a hard thing for anyone to handle – especially someone so young. You see, I’m a product of a biracial relationship. My father is Jamaican and Chinese, while my mother is Caucasian. As such, I dealt with more than my fair share of bigotry growing up. Over the years, I learned to push through all the ignorance, though.

That said, as I got older, life didn’t go exactly how I expected it to.

Overcoming Addiction

At 13, I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. By 17 years old, my doctor decided to put me on pain medication to help me cope with it. Unfortunately, that’s how I developed an opiate addiction.

This addiction would last the next 10 years. As a result, in those 10 years, I dropped out of high school. Additionally, I almost overdosed more than 5 times. My addiction almost bankrupted my parents, and caused me to gain weight and live an extremely unhealthy lifestyle.

October 13th, 2014, was the day everything finally changed. I decided I was sick and tired of being sick and tired! With the help of my family, I checked myself into detox.

I can happily say that I’m now almost 7 years clean and sober! Fighting for my life showed me a strength I never knew I had. It opened my eyes to the fact that life was short. Thus, we don’t always have the time to achieve our dreams and goals… and I wanted to make that time for myself!

Pursuing My Makeup Artist Certification

After I got my mind back on track, my love of makeup also came roaring back with a vengeance. At first, I’ll admit it: I thought I knew it ALL.

Boy, how wrong I was!

Just over a year ago, I signed up with QC Makeup Academy. It wasn’t long into my makeup artist certification course that Nathan Johnson showed me the error of my ways. Basically, I’ve never looked back since!

My love of makeup started when I was around 12 years old. Now, I’m 33 and living my dream! All I needed was to realize that even though I can claim to be a makeup artist, having the proper credentials to back it up holds a weight of its own in the professional beauty industry.

In a nutshell: if you truly want to succeed as an MUA, you absolutely must get a reputable makeup artist certification!

Finding QC Makeup Academy’s Online Certification Training

I discovered QC Makeup Academy after seeing an ad for the school on Facebook. To me, it felt like fate! As a busy mom of 4 children, brick-and-mortar schooling was out of the question.

Online training, however, would fit with my lifestyle perfectly. After doing my research on the school, I also found out that I could complete my studies at my own pace. Although I’d be given 2 full years to finish, this meant I could actually earn my makeup artist certification in as little or as much time as I needed.

As soon as I saw this, I was sold. Subsequently, I signed up that same day!

My Journey Since Then

Every moment since the day I signed up with QC Makeup Academy has been a blessing. Don’t get me wrong – it hasn’t always been easy. During my schooling, I actually suffered the biggest loss of my life when I had a miscarriage.

My classmates, tutor, and the school itself were ALL there for me in my greatest time of need. But even the hard times taught me invaluable lessons. For example, understanding that “less is more” was hard for me at first. However, it ultimately made my makeup application improve by leaps and bounds!

When I started my makeup artist certification training, I was at maybe a 3 (on a scale from 1 to 10). Now, I can humbly say I’m at an 8. I fully intend to continue working hard each and every day, so I can eventually be at a 10.

I know exactly how I plan to do this, too. When I’m done earning my Master Makeup Artistry certification, I then plan to add Skincare services to my repertoire (and resume) as well. After all, mastering skin is the single greatest way to truly master makeup!

Online Makeup Classes Changed My Life…and Here’s Why!

A Little About Me

Hello, my beautiful people! If you do not know me, my name is Erica (otherwise known as Erica Starr). I’m a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy, as well as a graduate and current student. I’ve completed the Master Makeup Artistry Course, Skincare Course, and Virtual Makeup Training Course. I’m currently enrolled in the Global Beauty Workshop, as well as the Pro Makeup Workshop.

Having these online makeup classes available really has helped me develop into a professional artist in many aspects. I’ve since opened my own makeup business called Erica Starr MUA. Moreover, I’ve been able to offer skincare services in addition to makeup services. And thanks to all I learned in the Virtual Makeup Training Course, I’ve even expanded into offering makeup lessons over Zoom. Thus, I can assist clients both online and in-person.

In today’s article, I’ll be talking about how I’ve become successful as a makeup artist, especially as this crazy pandemic begins to die down here in Southern California. Furthermore, I’ll reveal exactly how much QC’s online makeup classes have changed my life – and how they’ll change YOURS, too! 💕

Why I Chose to Take Online Makeup Classes

I decided to take online makeup classes and become a professional MUA when the pandemic first started. The online learning environment offered at QC Makeup Academy gave me the opportunity to work at my preferred pace while still being a mom to 3 kids. Not to mention, I was also taking care of my elderly grandpa at the time, too.

I’ve been a caregiver for as long as I can remember. I started working with special needs adults when I was 18 years old. Now, I won’t mention how old I am now, but let’s just say it’s been a lengthy amount of time since then. When you work with special needs individuals, you learn to be a people person. Plus, you need to be able to communicate professionally with others. With that background and customer service background, I’ve been able to use those skills to be personal and professional with my beauty clientele.

With that being said, COVID-19 gave me time to really investigate a different career path. The one thing I knew I loved to do was play with makeup and get creative. I had no real skills going into it, but that didn’t stop me… and it shouldn’t stop you either, if you’re in the same boat! I was at a point in my life where I felt I needed to get a career under my belt. Importantly, it needed to be a career could take me far, so long as I put the effort into it. Ultimately, this is what pushed me even more to get my professional certification while doing online makeup courses.

Choosing QC Makeup Academy’s Online Classes

I’ve always enjoyed learning online. Brick-and-mortar institutions were hard for me, as I found it difficult to concentrate in class. After all, people were often messing around and laughing, or clicking and clacking their pens on the desks. I was just too easily distracted by others, so it made it hard to keep focus.

As a result, it started to affect my grades and, ultimately, made me quit school. I was close to finishing my Bachelor’s degree at the time. However, I just felt like getting a BA degree was not what I truly wanted.

Important Criteria

When I was researching online makeup classes, a few things were essential to me. Firstly, we were in a pandemic, so cost was particularly important. (We were all in the same boat at that time with regards to money, am I right?) Secondly, there needed to be a real tutor to guide me, as well as real people working for the school who’d be able to help me if I ever needed assistance.

With QC Makeup Academy, they and their online makeup courses offered exactly that! I was able to pace my time and work on units that took longer for as long as I needed to. Since you’re given 2 whole years to complete each class, I highly suggest taking your time. This will help you nail techniques down while you have access to your tutor. If you rush, you’ll see the outcome with lower grades.

Trust me: the payoff of hard work is worth the effort you put into it!

QC Makeup Academy Has Changed My Life!

QC Makeup Academy’s online makeup classes have totally changed my life. With the help of my tutor, Nathan Johnson, I was able to push myself further. I was able to really expand my thought process, in terms of how makeup should be applied – versus what we see on YouTube and other social media platforms.

Once I discovered the value of proper makeup training, I quickly grew to dislike what I was seeing on a lot of social media posts. Over-filled brows, super light undereye masks, etc. I wanted to be able to apply makeup in a way where, say, a bride didn’t look overdone. Mainly, I never wanted to make people look like a completely different person.

I owe this fundamental, game-changing perspective to QC’s online classes and tutors. I’m grateful I found QC Makeup Academy on Google. Of course, I did research other schools in the beginning. My husband even did research on QC for me, to make sure the school was real and well-known. Ultimately, I obviously chose to enroll and I’ve never looked back since!

To be honest, I didn’t expect my makeup business to start taking off so quickly. But once I got a professional website, and began marketing and promoting my services on social media, things took off pretty fast! This is why, speaking from personal experience, it’s imperative to understand the business side of being a makeup artist, too.

Once you sit down and get the business side done, I assure you that your business will take off. Moreover, with the right portfolio images, your work will speak for itself – especially if you take your training seriously!

What’s On The Horizon…

As a I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I still have a few online makeup classes to finish with QC Makeup Academy.

I’m especially excited for the Global Beauty and Pro Makeup workshops! In my opinion, these courses are just as beneficial as the Master Makeup Artistry Course. I live in a very Metropolitan area. As such, global beauty knowledge will help me expand my understanding of all skin types, tones, and undertones. I’m about halfway done with this course and I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!

Then there’s the Pro Makeup Workshop. This class is meant to push you further and refine the skills already acquired in the MMA course. The Pro Makeup Workshop will help me to think even more outside the box, as well as build on looks and techniques I’ve already honed.

Final Thoughts

As I close my time here with you today, I just want to say that QC Makeup Academy truly is worth every single penny. I came in knowing very little about makeup artistry. Now, I’m a certified expert with an exceptional understanding on everything from how to prep skin, to the full makeup application. My skill-set is more advanced than I ever thought possible! I’m so grateful to be a graduate, Ambassador, and current student of QC Makeup Academy.

NOW is the time to sign up and get your dream career going. I promise that you will not regret it! Thank you so much for reading. I hope this helps you decide to join us in this wonderful makeup industry. A Little About Me

Hi, everyone, my name is Paula Alleyne. I’m a Student Ambassador with QC Makeup Academy and I’m here to tell you about my journey so far as a certified makeup artist. The first question you may have is, “How will I know when I’m ready to start my own makeup business?” I’ll be honest, this answer varies for everyone. But for me, it started when I knew I wanted to earn an income from what was, at the time, just a hobby.

4 Things I Needed to Do BEFORE Starting a Makeup Business

In an industry such as this one, it’s extremely important to go into things fully prepared. Before I decided to start my own makeup business, for example, there were a few things I wanted to achieve first:

1. Gain a professional makeup education.

From the time I realized I liked makeup artistry, I practiced on friends and family members. I believed, however, that if I started charging a fee for my service, I shouldn’t be taking any chances. I wanted to be truly knowledgeable about what I was doing. The only way I knew I’d get to that level was through proper training. That’s when I began my search for different makeup schools and enrolled at QC Makeup Academy!

2. Purchase a camera.

These days, so many mobile phones are capable of taking beautiful, high-quality images. For this reason, it’s not uncommon to use them to snap a picture of our work. However, I quickly realized that my mobile phone (at the time) was not capturing – and thus, accurately reflecting – the quality of work I was doing on my friends and family.

It became frustrating that after all my efforts, the photos didn’t nearly do justice to what I was seeing in real life. Fortunately for me, my husband decided to take his photography skills more seriously and purchased a professional camera. I soon used his photography skills to capture the work I did on others, and the difference was like night and day!

3. Develop a strong portfolio, to be used for my makeup business.

In my recent blog article, Breaking Down My Makeup Portfolio, I provided tips in developing your very own portfolio. With my husband developing his photography, and my decision to start a campaign of bridal shoots and network with service providers, I was able to start my portfolio development. How were potential clients to know what I was offering, if I didn’t SHOW them some of my work? As I continued to share my work, I got more queries, referrals, and clients!

4. Set myself a timeframe.

Personally, I set a particular year that I wanted to start my makeup business and begin earning an income by. Thus, my focus was to achieve these goals by that given timeframe. Now, I’ll be honest: my first paid job didn’t happen in the same year I’d set my deadline by. It did, however, quickly come in the following year.

My point is, it’s very important to remember that life isn’t set in stone. You may set goals for yourself and your makeup business that don’t necessarily come to fruition right away. However, creating milestones for yourself is still beneficial. It’ll help you stay on track with all of the sways and demands on life. Just try to be realistic with your goals – and don’t become overly frustrated when it doesn’t exactly happen as you plan. As long as you at least have a plan, you’re on then right track!

4 Tips for Building Your Makeup Business

Once I started earning an income, there were additional steps which I created for myself in order to increase my makeup business’s chances for success. If you keep these steps in mind as you pursue your own journey, I guarantee you’ll set yourself up for a lucrative, long-term career!

1. Develop your brand.

Developing the brand for your makeup business is such an important part of your journey. Starting off in professional makeup artistry can be intimidating. Initially, you might feel the sway to follow what everyone else is doing. However, I chose to remain true to my style, which was clean, classic, and natural.

In time, people will recognize the consistency of your style and begin to identify you as an artist within that specific type of artistry. Just keep in mind that branding does not only incorporate style alone. Rather, it represents the entire package, as well as how potential clients will identify you.

2. Develop your makeup business logo.

The creation of my logo was another part of my branding. When people saw the image, it was to represent me as an artiste and my services. I wanted the image to portray cleanness and elegance, while also having a hint of modernity. I ran through some ideas I had with a graphic designer, and the final image was one I was pleased with.

3. Always maintain professionalism.

Once I started the process of brand development for my makeup business, everything had to be in alignment with it. As such, this included the standard of service I was offering to my clients. I wanted to ensure that I always maintained professionalism. Importantly, this applied even if the clients were my friends, as well as if my services were complimentary.

From the beginning, I knew the service they received from me was their only real experience. The impression I made was what would determine whether or not they’d ever want to recommend me to others. And, of course, this is vital, since word-of-mouth is huge in the beauty community!

For me, professionalism also included:

  • Communication. This involved early discussions regarding clients’ thoughts and ideas of the makeup look for the event. It needed to be inclusive of attire and jewelry, in order to ensure the makeup application was cohesive with the entire image.
  • Scheduling. Knowing where your makeup application fits within the overall plan of the event is important. It allows the client to realistically think of the time needed to arrive at a venue, or be prepared for the service. Based on the time, the client can determine if he or she will dress before the makeup service or afterwards. It also allows you as the artiste to plan your day accordingly.
  • Punctuality. Discussing the tentative schedule allows you to be on time for your client. Should unexpected instances occur and you foresee a delay in your arrival, inform the client as soon as possible.
Makeup business article, July 28 2021, in-post image

4. Maintain a pleasant personality.

Depending on the event, the client may be flustered or anxious. You, however, are the professional. As such, you should always stay calm and pleasant. There was a time when one of my clients arrived late. As a result, our plans of shooting at one of the locations needed to be changed. The client was flustered and apologetic. On top of that, their hair was yet to be done.

But I remained calm and coordinated with the photographer on the new plans. Moreover, I ensure that my client remained the center of attention for her special occasion and reassured her that she was going to look great. And she did!

How to Showcase Your Makeup Portfolio On Your Website!

By Career Advice, QC Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career 3 Comments

In this day and age, having a physical makeup portfolio won’t be enough – no matter how gorgeous it is! Since we all live online now, it’s critical to showcase your work on digital platforms as well. One prime example is on your business website!

Not sure how to do this? QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Katie Stegeman, has 4 tips to get you started in the right direction!

Katie is a certified Master International Makeup Professional and International Skincare Consulting, Professional. Moreover, she’s a graduate of QC’s Virtual Makeup Training and is currently enrolled in 5 other courses!

Makeup portfolio article, July 23 2021, Katie Stegeman headshot

A Little About Me

Hi, everyone! My name is Katie Stegeman. I’m a graduate and Student Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. I’ve graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry, Skincare Course, and Virtual Makeup Training Course. Additionally, I am also enrolled in the:

  • Pro Makeup Workshop
  • Airbrush Makeup Workshop
  • Global Beauty Course
  • Hair Styling Essentials Course
  • Portfolio Development Workshop

Today, I want to discuss the importance of a makeup portfolio. My goal is to teach YOU a few handy ways to showcase it properly, so that you can help transform your business and brand. So, let’s jump right into it!

Marketing Your Makeup Portfolio Online: Where to Focus

Sharing your work across a wide variety of online platforms is sort of like a big funnel. The more places you showcase your photos, the more people will be looking at your work. This, in turn, will raise awareness of your business and get it seen by prospective, target clients. As a result, you’ll be able to drastically increase your bookings!

If you don’t market your makeup portfolio online, however, then there are no two ways about it: you’re going to be limiting your brand’s potential. You’ll shrink the circle of prospective clients that see your work, which will negatively impact your booking ability.

Firstly, you need to make sure that you have a makeup portfolio that demonstrates your very best work. From there, one of the BEST ways to promote it online is by sharing it on your business website. By doing this, you’ll help potentials clients find you more easily and conveniently!

In a nutshell: the more your makeup portfolio is shared, the more prospective clients will see you. So, ensure you have a professional website and share your work there! This will dramatically increase your chances for a massive presence, following, and public interest.

4 Tips for Showcasing Your Portfolio on Your Website

Tip #1: Make sure your makeup portfolio is easily accessible on your website!

When including your makeup portfolio on your business website, the first thing to keep in mind is its accessibility. Is it simple and straightforward to find? Or will people need to jump through hoops just to figure out where it is?

If potential clients are struggling to find your photos (or struggling to navigate your site in general), they’ll quickly lose interest and move on. We definitely don’t want that! As such, it’s extremely important to look at all of your options. Which photos from your portfolio do you want to use on your site? Where do you want to display them? What can you do to make sure viewers know exactly where your portfolio is within the first few seconds of landing on your site?

Do some research! Look up other MUAs in your area and check out their websites. How have they showcased their portfolios? How long did it take you to find them? Can you see all of their photos? Are they easy to scroll through? Can you access everything without trouble?

The easier the process is, the more likely people will continue to look at your work. This can make a HUGE difference on whether potential clients want to book with you or not!

Tip #2: Make sure your makeup portfolio is cohesive and visually appealing!

This next tip goes hand-in-hand with tip #1. You want a makeup portfolio that’s visually appealing. Moreover, its flow needs to make sense. Personally, when I’m looking at someone else’s portfolio, aesthetics plays a big role in my first impression of that business. If I can’t find the photos easily on the site, or the photos are not laid out nicely, I’m probably not going to stay on that website for much longer.

There are so many programs nowadays that can help you format images so that they all look similar and are all the same size. By simply making them all the same size and/or keeping a theme or color going throughout, you can easily create visual similarities in your portfolio. This will please the eye of potential clients and create a natural flow from one photo to the next. Typically, once I get photos back from a professional photographer, I try to lay out my photos in an order that looks best and is truly eye-catching.

Tip #3: Only showcase your BEST work!

There are plenty of photos I’ve taken of the work that I have pulled out of my makeup portfolio. Why? Because I have BETTER quality photos, or my skills have improved since a certain photo was taken. The better I get as an artist, the higher-quality photos I have to put out there as my best work.

Plus, the longer I’m working in the industry, the more diversity of projects I’ve worked on. Therefore, I can add these to my portfolio and showcase more of my skills. For my photos, I always make sure that I have:

  • Good lighting
  • No filters
  • Cropped dimensions to better show makeup techniques
  • Clear resolution (rather than a fuzzy or grainy photo)

If you keep the above in mind, this will all lead to you having the best portfolio possible!

Want to learn more about what NOT to do in your makeup portfolio? Here are 4 rookie mistakes to avoid!

Tip #4: Show a wide range of diversity!

No two clients will be the same. After all, people have different skin tones, types, concerns, style preferences, and visions. If your makeup portfolio only showcases your skills on one skin tone or type, you could be alienating a lot of potential clients who don’t necessarily fall into that category. Furthermore, if you only demonstrate a tiny handful of styles, it could inadvertently tell people that that’s all you know how to do.

In order to be the best of the best, and attract as many interested parties as possible, make sure that your portfolio is diverse. Ideally, you should showcase models that:

  • Have different skin tones
  • Have different skin types
  • Are of varying ages
  • Are of different genders
  • Wear varying makeup styles and/or techniques

Speaking from experience, I’ve been able to work on all sorts of models, thanks to my comprehensive certification training with QC Makeup Academy. For example, I’ve done makeup for senior portraits, maternity shoots, Renaissance-styled shoots, and bridal editorial. Because my makeup portfolio shows a wide range of makeup styles, prospective clients have a clear understanding of what I’m capable of!

The Benefits of Professional Makeup Training

What professional makeup training has given me has been truly invaluable. QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course was the foundation of my education. It taught me everything I needed to know about makeup artistry in order to work at an expert level. Since then, adding more QC courses to my repertoire has been the best decision I could’ve possibly made for my career!

QC Makeup Academy’s Portfolio Development Workshop

In particular, QC’s Portfolio Development Workshop has really helped me. This 2-unit program will teach you everything you need to know about:

  • The importance of makeup portfolios for professional makeup artists;
  • Researching industry standards;
  • Planning and conducting your very own photoshoot;
  • The presentation of your makeup portfolio;
  • Basic photo editing;
  • How to market your portfolio;
  • Distributing and submitting your images for publishing;
  • Marketing your business services;
  • And more!

How This Workshop Has Helped Me

Putting my best foot forward and showcasing the skills I have to offer clients are huge! This is especially important when considering the competition of other makeup artists in the area. Most of the artists in my are only using social media as a means of sharing their portfolio. However, relying on social media alone can make things tricky to navigate, depending on how the platform is laid out.

Understanding the importance of having my makeup portfolio on my website, as well as how to display it there, are all things that QC’s Portfolio Development Workshop helped me, master. Furthermore, this course also taught me how to plan a shoot on my own, and choose how I wanted to showcase that work. I enrolled in this program to have a better understanding of how I needed to develop my portfolio… and I can DEFINITELY say this course delivered on that in spades!

Earning My Makeup Artist Certification!

Meet Makeup Artist Certification Student, Jessica Lee!

Master Makeup Artistry Student

Pro Makeup Workshop Student

Bowmanville, ON

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Jessica. Currently, my main goal is to successfully obtain my makeup artist certification through QC Makeup Academy! I’m also 33 years old, and a mother of 4 little humans and 5 fur babies.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I know the power that makeup has had for me. It can turn a bad day into a good day and empower you. By getting my makeup artist certification, I want to be able to help other people let their inner light and inner beauty shine bright!

Jessica Lee portfolio image 1

In your opinion, why do you feel it’s important for all MUAs to have a professional makeup artist certification?

I feel it’s very important because it shows your clients that you know what you’re doing and that they’re safe in your hands!

Why did you decide to pursue your makeup artist certification online, rather than in person?

I have 4 kids and they take up a LOT of my time! Also, I have 4 jobs, a house to run, and a million other things on my schedule. A brick-and-mortar makeup school would never be able to accommodate me like an online school can! With online makeup school, I can do my certification training at my own pace. There’s never any rush. Who wouldn’t want that?

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy? Ultimately, what was it about QC that made you decide to enroll?

I discovered QC Makeup Academy through an ad on Facebook. Once I did my research on their industry-leading tutors, their certification courses, and the school as a whole, I was sold. I signed up that very day!

Jessica Lee portfolio image 2

You’re over halfway done in the Master Makeup Artistry Course. How has your experience been in this certification program thus far? In what ways has your training helped you grow as an artist?

I’ve absolutely loved every minute of QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course so far! Some assignments are more challenging than others, but that’s all part of growing as an artist. I’ve grown so much in the year that I’ve been enrolled with QC. I had to throw out everything I thought I knew, in order to truly learn the proper techniques I was being taught… and thank goodness for that!

You’re also currently enrolled in our Pro Makeup Workshop. Why have you decided to add this advanced makeup artist certification to your qualifications, and how do you expect this additional training to refine your skill-set?

I could NOT pass up the opportunity to enroll in QC’s Pro Makeup Workshop! After all, why stop learning at the basics? Why not take it that step further? Continuing your education and building upon your existing makeup artist certification will help you broaden your horizons. Plus, it’ll likely help you grow your client base. Personally, I can’t wait to start this program!

Skincare training is an essential benefit to all makeup artists. What are the top reasons you enrolled in QC’s Skincare Course, and what’s the most important skincare lesson you’ve learned so far?

All makeup applications start with skin. If you don’t know how to properly identify your client’s skin type, how can you possibly know which primer to use? How will you know which type of setting powder you need to apply? Furthermore, how will you know which foundation to use?

The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that a daily skincare routine is a MUST! Perfect skin doesn’t come naturally – unless you were blessed by the gods, of course. But for most of us, you have to work for it. QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course teaches you exactly how to do this!

Makeup artist certification article, Jessica Lee portfolio image 3

How useful have all the QC materials and assignments been for your makeup artist certification courses?

The materials for my courses aren’t just useful – they’re a necessity. Each assignment teaches you something new and helps you grow in ways you’ve never imagined! Plus, all these course textbooks provide you with priceless information to help you become the best makeup artist you can be!

How valuable has the feedback been from your tutor, Nathan Johnson?

I have to admit, I was scared of Nathan at first… Haha! In my mind, he was this renowned, intimidating makeup artist who was basically telling me that I had to start over from scratch. But now? I value every word of feedback he gives me, good or bad! Personally, I don’t want an instructor who sugarcoats things. Rather, I want one who will truly help me grow, both as an artist and as a person. Nathan has become one of the most important people in my life. I cherish our friendship!

What has been your FAVORITE hands-on assignment so far for your makeup artist certification training, and why?

Without a doubt, I’d have the say the celebrity-inspired assignment was my favorite! I chose Boy George and had an absolute blast going through and recreating his many outrageous and stunning looks!

You’ve recently joined QC Makeup Academy’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, why do you recommend QC’s online makeup artist certification training?

Most people live crazy, busy lives. This has especially been the case during the COVID-19 pandemic! After all, many adults have been stuck at home. Some still are and will be for a while yet. QC Makeup Academy offers you an amazing education, all from the comfort of your living room! Moreover, there’s no rush. You do it at your own pace, and the tutors are all so hands-on with their students. It’s very rare to find all of these perks offered from one school!

You’re located in Bowmanville, Ontario; a town has approx. 40,000 residents. However, you’re also a 20-minute drive from Oshawa – a city of approx. 402,000 people. How do you feel your location will work to your advantage throughout your makeup career?

Bowmanville is a farm town, but Oshawa is a growing, bustling city. Having a small town with a bigger city close-by provides me with a wide variety of client possibilities! Not to mention, there are many films that’ve begun filming in and around Oshawa, such as Stephen King’s IT. The possibilities are endless!

What services do you currently offer clients?

Unfortunately, I live in a province that’s been under lockdown for quite some time. So, there hasn’t been much beauty experts could do, in terms of providing in-person makeup or skincare services. During this time, I’ve taken to offering online lessons in basic makeup application techniques. Sometimes, it’s one-on-one. Other times, people host online group parties for it. Luckily, Ontario is beginning to open back up, so regular industry services should be resuming very soon!

Once you’ve earned your makeup artist certification, what are your top career goals as a professional MUA?

My goal is to make a name for MYSELF. I want to achieve this, not just through just social media, but through my work. Ultimately, I just want to help people. I’ll be happy doing this in whatever capacity I can.

Finally: in your opinion, what is the TRUE secret to success as a makeup artist?

The true secret to being a successful makeup artist is being able to take constructive criticism. Use it as a learning tool to better yourself. Beyond that, it’s important to never stop learning. This way, you will never stop growing!

Inspired by Jessica’s story? Earn YOUR makeup artist certification in as little as 2-6 months by enrolling with QC Makeup Academy today!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! My name is Hayley Marie Siebe. I’m a 21-year-old makeup artist and a graduate of QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. I am also a current Student of the Hairstyling Essentials Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Global Beauty Workshop. Recently, I became one of QC Makeup Academy’s newest Student Ambassadors!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

During my teenage years, you’d find me in front of the mirror, applying makeup and straightening my hair bright and early, every morning before school. Growing up, beauty and glamor have always been great passions of mine. They gave me motivation! In particular, makeup gave me the chance to express my creativity in so many ways!

I always loved to experiment with makeup and recreate all types of cute, dazzling looks. Over time, I began doing makeup on other people, as well as styling hair. Women would end up with a smile on their face every time they saw the finished results. Ever since then, I’ve known that I wanted to make other people look and feel their best! Being a professional makeup artist gives me that opportunity.

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy? Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with this school?

I discovered QC Makeup Academy during my Junior Year of high school. Right away, I felt that this school would be the perfect place for me to start! With their training, I’d be able to join the career field I’ve always wanted to be a part of. After I graduated high school in May of 2019, I enrolled myself into QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course and Hair Styling Essentials Course.

I chose QC Makeup Academy because their school offers so many things you can’t find anywhere else! You get a full 2 years to complete your course, while working at your own pace. This is something many schools don’t have or accept. Moreover, I’m able to access my Online Student Center whenever I want to look back at information in my textbooks and/or instructional videos.

I also loved the fact that QC’s assignments never need to be rushed. There’s also an option to redo assignments for a better grade, if needed. You also get a real, internationally-recognized certification once you graduate. It was important to me that I’d be able to work anywhere (if I wanted to) and have clients know I’ve had experience in this kind of work before.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program and how would you say it helped you grow as an artist?

My experience with QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course has been amazing! I’ve never been more excited to learn anything in my life. During my time in this course, I would always set goals for myself. For example: I’d set a goal for when I wanted to turn in an assignment, or set a goal for how much time I’d practice on a particular assignment. If I was unhappy with how a makeup look turned out, I’d also challenge myself to get better and better. I’d refuse to submit my work until I felt it was truly ready, and would end up trying again.

Since graduating from the MMA course, I’ve been able to go about building my own freelance makeup artistry business. I’ve been using the knowledge and tools that my tutor, Nathan Johnson, has given to me. Furthermore, I’ve also assisted a Cincinnati-based bridal MUA for a few weddings. Through this experience, I was able to gain a few clients who wanted to book me for future weddings!

QC Makeup Academy has had a very positive impact on my career thus far. Their Master Makeup Artistry program was the first certified makeup course I’d ever completed. I can say without doubt that their training has given me the tools and confidence to grow as a makeup artist!

Why did you also choose to enroll in QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop?

I enrolled myself into QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop because I believe that more practice makes perfect! It’s my goal to take my makeup skills to the next level and add onto my current experience.

As you’ve mentioned, you’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Global Beauty Workshop and Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you enroll in these particular courses, and how do you plan to incorporate these services in your business once you’ve graduated?

The reason I enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Global Beauty Workshop is because I want to get more experience applying makeup on all groups of people, skin tones, etc. What’s more, I wish to learn more about different cultures. Once I graduate from this course, I want to incorporate everything I’ve learned in order to further build my freelance business. I want to be able to travel around the country, applying makeup on any and every type of client who wishes to work with me!

As for the Hair Styling Essentials Course, I chose to enroll in this program because I wanted to add on another service to my freelance business. When I was younger, I was always that friend you would go to if you needed your hair colored or styled! I always enjoyed being able to work with my hands and create. Thanks to this certification course, I am progressing my hair styling skills and will be able to put them to good use!

How useful have all the QC Makeup Academy course materials and assignments been so far?

QC Makeup Academy provides their courses with paperback and digital textbooks, as well as instructional videos and a wide array of assignments. These materials as a whole not only help you learn how to be a professional makeup artist – they also help you to succeed as one, too!

Now, I know what your thinking: “Can’t I just do a quick Google or YouTube search for free hair and/or makeup tutorials?”

Sure, but this will never be enough if you want to do makeup professionally. With QC Makeup Academy, you’re being taught by internationally-trained makeup artists and hair stylists! These are legitimate experts who have put 10-20 years of their life into the beauty industry. They’ll teach you about real-world makeup. Moreover, you’ll also learn other critical knowledge, such as Sanitary Guidelines and invaluable business training!

You’re currently building your own freelance makeup business. How has this process been so far?

After graduating from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course, I created my own professional business profile on QC’s online database. Creating this profile was the first step in establishing a web presence for my business, thus allowing potential clients to find me.

During this time, I’ve been slowly gaining more and more clients. I’ve also created a business page on Facebook and Instagram, too. This way, I can start getting my work out there. Furthermore, I can let people know that I am properly certified – especially in my community. I live in a small suburban town in Kentucky called Hebron. Hebron has a population of less than 7,000 people. The best way to gain clientele in a small town is to be the makeup artist your town needs!

In order for me to corner the market and maximize my success, I need to advertise my business in my area. After all, there are no other professional makeup artists currently operating in Hebron, KY. So, this gives me a HUGE opportunity!

What services do you currently offer your clients?

As part of my freelance business, I currently offer a variety of services. Firstly, I cater to makeup for special events. Anyone taking part in (or attending) an event can get a full-face makeup application. This service will include airbrush makeup, foundation, and false lashes.

Secondly, I also offer bridal makeup. For this service, I charge the bride $85 for a full-face application. For the Bridal Party, as well as for the Mother of the Bride (or Groom), I charge $65. Thirdly, I offer full-face makeup applications for photoshoots, Senior portraits, Proms/Homecomings, etc. I charge between $70-$75 for this type of service. For any other kind of special event, I charge $65 for a full-face makeup application.

Lastly, I offer makeup applications that aren’t full-face as well. For instance, for concealer, airbrush, face powder, blush, and highlighter, my rate is $45. If a client just wants eyeshadow and mascara, it’ll cost $20. If a client just wants eyeliner and lashes only, my rate is $20. And if someone just wants me to do their eyebrows, I charge only $15.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

One of my top career goals as a makeup artist is to be able to travel all around the country, doing other people’s makeup. In addition to bridal makeup, I also want to target more clients interested in editorial and fashion makeup applications. I love being able to apply dramatic makeup!

One day, I see my makeup business being big enough that it has a forever impact on each and every client I have – or end up gaining in the future! Thanks to the QC Makeup Academy family, I’ve given myself the best possible start to my professional beauty career!

Meet Makeup Artistry Expert, Michelle Lannon!

By Graduate Feature, QC Student Ambassador, Student Ambassador 3 Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Michelle Lannon and I’m a certified makeup artistry expert. I’ve always had a passion for art, beauty, and design. I’m obsessed with coffee, Jack Skellington, and anything Halloween-related. I also love the color purple (the actual color, not the movie) and, of course, makeup! I’m originally from NYC. However, I’ve lived in several places all over the United States, such as Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, Nashville, and now Richmond.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I have always had an interest in makeup. Fun fact: I actually began playing with it at the incredibly young age of 2! In trying to mimic my mother, I decided that a nail polish brush belonged in my eye… lol! Thankfully, my skills have improved dramatically since then – especially with the help of QC Makeup Academy‘s courses. I was always the person my immediate family and my friends went to when they wanted help with their hair or makeup.

(And I still am to this day!)

Why did you decide to take makeup artistry classes online, rather than in-person?

Back when I enrolled with QC Makeup Academy, I was in a bit of a transitional period. I’ve done what I “should” be doing my whole life, but not what I actually wanted to be doing. I’d just been laid off from a job – a job that, I admit, my whole heart was definitely not in.

So, I was trying to figure out my next move. My cousin actually attends QC, too, and they’re the one who first introduced me to the school. I am a busy person. Thus, online courses work well for me, as I can easily and conveniently fit my training into my lifestyle.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

As I mentioned above, my cousin, Melissa Pallone, introduced me to QC. I liked what she was learning and doing, so I decided to take the plunge and try it myself. I’m so glad I did, because I’ve learned so much since doing enrolling! Initially, I was not sure at one point if I would keep going. However, I was encouraged by my peers – as well as my tutor, Nathan Johnson – to keep pushing.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program and how would you say it helped you grow as an artist?

I won’t lie, it was challenging! If you’re willing to have yourself challenged, push the status quo, discover who you are as a creative, and actually give your all, then you should definitely enroll in the Master Makeup Artistry Course!

I completed the program before the course was updated. As I understand it, it’s even MORE challenging now than it was when I did it! I personally love a good challenge, because I love to learn. Trust me when I say that you’ll do both in this course. QC Makeup Academy provides you with the basic tools needed to complete their training (although many of us have also added our own tools out of personal preference).

The best advice I can give is: pay attention! Watch and re-watch the videos. Listen to the feedback provided to you – both by your tutor(s) and your peers – and never take anything personally. Constructive feedback will only ever help you become better! So long as you do all this, you’ll grow and flourish not only in this course, but the professionally industry as well.

You’ve also completed QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course. In your opinion, why should ALL makeup artistry experts have proper skincare training?

Initially, I was not sure about the Skincare Course. But after watching a webinar that Nathan Johnson did on the value of proper skincare (as a basis for good makeup), I decided to give it a try. I figured that, if nothing else, it would give me some tips I may not have already known.

Boy, was I in for a surprise!!!

This is another course that will challenge you. You learn so much about what goes into skincare. Moreover, you learn about the good and bad ingredients to look for, as well as how to properly determine skin types. Altogether, this knowledge is a fundamental building block in makeup artistry!

In fact, I would even go so far as to advise EVERYONE to complete this course. You can absolutely take it after you’ve completed the Master Makeup Artistry Course, or concurrently with it. However, Nathan has said countless times that – if given the choice – it’s recommend that you take it before the MMA Course. Either way, knowing what to look out for and how to treat skin is a must. Only then can you provide the top-notch makeup services we all want to give our clients!

You’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop and Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you enroll in these particular courses and how do you plan to incorporate these services into your business once you’ve graduated?

As an artist, I have always played with airbrushes. At one point in time, I even helped my son rebuild an old ’76 Camaro and did the airbrushing on it. I decided that since I had that fundamental knowledge, knowing how to provide these services with makeup would be beneficial. Plus, airbrush is a beautiful makeup, when applied correctly. It’s something that, these days, most brides are looking for on their big day!

My goal is to build a completely self-sufficient, sustainable business on the education that QC has provided to me. Knowing how to do event hair is also something that definitely applies here! Most people don’t want to go to 3-4 different people in order to complete one look for an event. Since I’ll know how to do it all, I can provide a one-stop-shop for my clients.

I’ve already incorporated both services into what I provide to clients, and I plan to do even more in the future!

How useful have all the QC Makeup Academy course materials and assignments been so far?

Incredibly useful! When I began the Master Makeup Artistry Course, I had a bit of trouble with the shadows provided. But once I got a bit further into the program, I was able to use them successfully. I cannot tell you how excited I was to receive the airbrush materials and starter kit. I was overjoyed that the airbrush machine and all of the fantasy and foundation products were from Temptu! Also, the curling wand (and 5 interchangeable barrels) that I received for my hairstyling course is great as well!

Give us one example of constructive tutor feedback that allowed you to grow as a makeup artist!

Nathan and I have a funny story about my journey. When I was first travelling through my Master Makeup Artistry journey, most of the tutor feedback I kept getting was, “Stop copying social media!” That, as well as some very constructive criticism.

I kept getting this feedback because prior to taking QC Makeup Academy’s courses, social media was what I had to refer to when learning the craft. It was a tough journey to break those habits – and along the way, I actually almost quit because I truly thought Nathan hated me! Lol! Of course, I now realize that that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

My advice is to develop a thick skin. This isn’t an easy industry to work in, and in order to truly thrive, you need to be able to hear harsh truths sometimes. All of the criticism provided is meant to help you grow and develop your skills as an artist. We’re trained to develop an “eye” when viewing makeup. So long as you always challenge yourself, you will be unstoppable!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup artistry certification training?

Firstly, I cannot stress enough the importance of sanitization. Keep your “house” clean and you’ll never have an issue. This means keeping clean brushes, clean kits, clean makeup, and most of all, a clean self. After all, you are the first thing a client sees. If you fail to make a good first impression, they’ll never use you again.

Secondly, another critical lesson I learned was symmetry. Symmetry is incredibly important. Moreover, it’s something you should always be striving for in your applications.

Thirdly, practice! Always keep practicing, even once you graduate. You will never learn it all, trust me.

Lastly, do not underestimate the value of knowing how to do classic makeup! Learn it, master it, and embrace it. It’s truly the basis for everything in makeup artistry.

You earned your Master International Makeup Professional (MIMP) certification back in 2019. Tell us how your makeup career has been going since then!

It had taken off incredibly well. In fact, I was steadily booking clients until COVID hit. I’d been working for a friend (who is a Boudoir photographer), as well as taking outside clients. I’m hoping to re-establish some clientele here in my new adopted home soon!

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want brand-new students to know about QC Makeup Academy?

ASK QUESTIONS! We are a friendly community of likeminded individuals who will never hesitate to help. With that said, however, you must also be willing to put in the time finding answers. This is especially the case in QC’s Virtual Classroom on Facebook. Do your own research and utilize the search bar before asking questions. There’s a good chance your inquiry has already been addressed before!

If you are still stuck, then never hesitate to ask away. After all, that is what we are here for. Furthermore, challenge yourself to grow beyond what you have learned during your time with QC. I have a motto in life: ABL. “Always be learning”. I’m the type of person who is never satisfied that I’ve learned everything. As a result, I always want to learn new things. So, take advanced courses, talk to your peers, network, and do everything you possibly can to further hone your craft.

What has been the most challenging part of launching your own makeup artistry business, and how have you overcome this challenge?

Marketing. That has been an absolute problem for me. I started a website, but had to shut it down for financial reasons when the pandemic hit,. Now, I’m getting ready to start it back up again. I also had to learn that sometimes, word-of-mouth is the best marketing tool in the arsenal.

What services do you currently offer clients?

If you can dream it, I will do it – so long as it’s within my power and qualifications, of course. I do everything from basic makeup artistry applications, all the way up to amateur special effects. (I’ve not yet taken QC’s Special FX Makeup Course yet, but I definitely plan to in the future!) I’ve worked jobs for boudoir, prom, special event, and face painting already. I would love to book more!

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I want to have a successful and thriving business that I can be proud of. My main goal is to get to a place where I no longer have to have a separate, full-time job. Instead, I’ll be able to do what makes me happy every day: makeup!

Finally: in your opinion, what’s the definition of “success” in the world of professional makeup artistry?

Waking up each and every day, excited to do what makes you happy. Being recommended by everyone you work on to others. Experiencing the joy that comes with making someone’s world a bit brighter.

After all, we never know what journey people are on in life. You could be working on someone who is struggling with depression, a terminal illness, or a lack of self-esteem. Your work could make all of the difference and change the way a person sees both life and themselves!
