Why You Should Join the QC Makeup Academy Virtual Classroom!

By About the School, Student Ambassador No Comments

Cheri Stevens is a Student Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. She is currently enrolled in the Master Makeup Artistry Course.

Hello everyone, I’m Cheri Stevens. Like with many other MUAs, I first became interested in makeup back in my teens. While everyone was wearing the best blue eyeshadow and lots of shimmer (hey, it WAS the 80’s), I was wondering how I could take it to the next level. I was obsessed by the way the people in film and TV always had such amazing, precise looks. They were so subtle, yet so gorgeous. I wanted to learn more and be able to do that for a living!

So, last year, I decided to investigate into different makeup schools. I quickly found that there were not a lot of options out there that provided distanced learning, which was what I wanted. I kept seeing ads for various schools, but nothing stood out to me.

That is, until I saw an ad for QC Makeup Academy!

Finding QC Makeup Academy

I was incredibly impressed with how informative their website was. The training can be done from home, while still having your tutors at your disposal whenever you require assistance. Plus, their easy payment options were a definite bonus! Everything I saw made it more than clear that QC was the best school for my particular needs!

Becoming Part of a Family

Part of being a QC Makeup Academy student is the large, amazing community that you instantly become involved with. I can network with other students, bounce ideas, get critiques, and receive support. The people you meet and chat with on a regular basis quickly become like a second family, which is truly amazing. I’ve yet to see a similar sense of community from any other school!

This is where the Virtual Classroom on Facebook comes into play. The Virtual Classroom is a private group where we can help each other in a centralized, safe space. Current, past, and even prospective students are given the chance to can get together to discuss all things makeup and beauty-related. At this point, I’ve lost count of how many hours each day I spend in there! It’s truly a fun place to discuss the industry, and all things makeup!

Online Makeup Schools: 11 Things to Look for When Choosing a School

By Education, Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Thinking of taking an online makeup course? QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador and alumnus, Nadia Calabro, is here to tell you the top 11 things to look for when researching online makeup schools!

Why Are Online Makeup Schools So Popular Nowadays?

When I made the decision to go back to school and follow my dreams of becoming a professional makeup artist, I’ll admit it: I was worried. How was I supposed to be a busy mom and be able to start a new career?

In-person classes wouldn’t be possible. So, the only option I had was to look into online makeup schools. This way, I would be able to do both. I can tell, you now, with complete certainty, that was the best decision I ever made!

Through my online makeup courses, I was able to study at any time and do my work from anywhere. QC Makeup Academy gives their students two years to complete their course, so there was no pressure on me to get through my studies quickly.

The independence provided by online makeup schools is ideal for anyone who:

  • Has a busy lifestyle
  • Doesn’t have access to brick-and-mortar classes
  • Learns better in a solo environment (while still being able to connect directly with their tutors and fellow classmates online)
  • Wishes to train at their own pace
  • Doesn’t want to risk exposure to COVID-19

My QC makeup courses worked for me because I never felt like I had to keep up with anyone else. If there was a unit or area that I felt I needed more time and practice with, I was able to give myself that time. That way, I could make sure that I was doing it to the best of my ability.

Perks of Online Makeup Schools

Going back to school when you already have a full-time job – and in my case, a family as well – can seem scary. It can especially seem a bit daunting financially. One awesome thing about online makeup schools is that they’re typically much cheaper than in-person classes.

Note: Keep in mind that I can only speak to my experience with QC Makeup Academy. But when doing your research into all of your options, you’ll find this to be similar with plenty of other online makeup schools as well.

Personally, I was surprised to see that online makeup schools were actually more affordable. Some people may think that a lower tuition must mean a lower quality of schooling, but I can tell you that with the right school, this is NOT the case! Through QC Makeup Academy, I’ve received the same education – if not better – than what I would have received by attending an in-person school.

The text materials are dense and detailed; outlining each topic with extreme care and precision. There are also instructional videos to go along with each technique and lesson. I found these to be extremely easy to follow. Since they contain close-ups, you get a perfect view of the work being done.

The final step of each unit is to complete a hands-on assignment, wherein you must perform the techniques you’ve learned on a real-life model. This kind of practice not only ensures that you’re getting properly prepared to work in the real world; it’s also a perfect way for your tutor to gauge:

  • How well you’re understanding the materials
  • Where you’re strengths are
  • Where you can improve

This way, they can provide you with detailed audio feedback after each unit!

Even before the pandemic, there has always been a need for online schooling. For one reason or another, many people prefer this method of education to its physical counterpart. But as we all know, the world we live in right now is unlike any other we have ever seen.

Many of us have no option but to do as much as we can from the safety of our own homes. Without online makeup schools like QC Makeup Academy, it would be impossible right now to start building a career for ourselves. Our lives and job aspirations would be at a standstill.

That Being Said…

There have always been online makeup schools, but when it comes to the internet, there have always been scammers, too. It’s critical to do your research when looking into any online makeup courses and institutions. Here are just a few shady red flags I urge you to watch out for:

1 – Suspiciously low tuition rates – remember, you get what you pay for!

For example, while QC Makeup Academy is very reasonably-priced, it’s still comparable to other online makeup schools. Don’t simply go for the online course that is cheapest! Similarly, be wary of ‘schools’ that say they can teach you everything you need to know at a suspiciously low price. This is often a big indicator that the quality of education is low, and you won’t be getting proper training.

2 – Courses that are all multiple choice quizzes and no hands-on training!

It’s always important to know the theory component of your schooling. But as a professional makeup artist, you will not be in the real world talking about makeup – you’ll be applying it. So, make sure that you enroll in an online makeup school where there is actually an emphasis on hands-on work.

3 – Needing to pay an extra fee to ‘buy’ your certification upon course completion!

This sort of school is a scam – full stop. Once you’ve paid for your course and put in all the work, there should be NO reason for you to have to pay extra in order to obtain your certificate/certifications. These should naturally be included within your course tuition.

4 – Lack of information on the school’s website!

A reputable makeup school will always have a professional website with all of the information you need. These details will be clear and properly laid out for you. It shouldn’t omit vital information or send you on a wild goose chase in order to find it on their site.

5 – No way to contact the school’s Support Team (or anyone, for that matter)!

There should always be an easy way to contact the school’s Support Team, as well as your tutors. Their responses should be reasonably quick and answer all of the questions you have.

QC Makeup Academy Beauty Buzz

6 – Lack of social media presence!

We live in a world where social media is everything. These days, nearly all reputable online makeup schools will have some sort of social media presence. If the school you’re looking into doesn’t, it might be worth it to look elsewhere.

7 – Suspicious reviews!

Fake reviews, mostly negative reviews, and no reviews at all are red flags!

When researching online makeup schools, always look into their reviews. Make sure that the reviews are credible. Pay close attentions to reviews left by current and formers students of that institution. If most of the students are reporting negative experiences, this should be a HUGE deciding factor for you.

8 – The school isn’t accredited!

This seems like an obvious one, but it’s still commonly overlooked. Just because a school has a social media page and website does NOT mean they are properly accredited. Online makeup schools that aren’t accredited are the ones you should be staying away from. So, take the time to verify this – and always go with a school that’s accredited!

What to Look For in Online Makeup Schools

I know, I know. The list we just covered seems like a lot of things to look out. Right now, you might be thinking, “Okay, so how can picking an online makeup school be a bit LESS daunting?”

Well, by knowing the criteria that all trustworthy online makeup schools SHOULD have! If the school you’re looking at provides the following 11 things, it may be the school for you!

woman sitting on couch, giving thumbs up

1 – Proper accreditation

QC Makeup Academy, for example, holds an A+ ranking from the Better Business Bureau. This is a huge selling point for any online makeup school! If they hold this kind of ranking, you know they are the real deal.

2 – How long the school’s been in business

That’s not to say that relatively new schools shouldn’t be trusted. However, online makeup schools that have been around longer tend to have a bit stronger of a reputation, more rounded out course curriculums, and a larger list of alumni.

QC Makeup Academy has been a leader in online learning since 1984! I think it’s safe to say that a school that’s been successfully running for this long and continue to hold tight to their standings is an online makeup school that works!

3 – The courses themselves are of the highest quality

The best online makeup school will offer high-quality curriculums and learning materials. They’ll ensure you get exactly what you’re paying for! For instance, when you apply to QC Makeup Academy, you receive a physical copy of your course materials (as well as online access to the electronic materials). If your course includes some sort of makeup kit, you’ll receive that in the mail, too.

The text materials are jam-packed with all of the information you’ll need throughout your career. On top of this, QC students and grads are given lifelong access to their digital course materials, tutorial videos, coursework, and tutor feedback. Having this kind of unlimited access is a HUGE benefit, as you’ll always have a place to turn when you need a:

  • Refresher on makeup techniques, theory, applications, etc.
  • Reminder on the areas you need to improve on
  • Reminder on where your strengths are

4 – You’ll receive a reputable certification or certificate upon graduating

There was one thing in particular that stood out to me about QC Makeup Academy: the fact that their certifications and certificates are internationally recognized. This means that graduates will have the ability to work internationally. Online makeup schools that can help open the doors to a wide range of job opportunities is what you should be looking for!

5 – There is some level of business training involved

If you want to start your own business someday, then logically, you’re going to need to know how to run a business. If you have no prior experience with this, online makeup schools that include a business component in their courses is a must!

QC’s courses have an optional unit entirely devoted to business training. As part of this unit, you’ll learn how to research real businesses around you in order to find comparable pricing and learn more about the local competition. You’ll also have the opportunity to plan your own business! You’ll create a business name, a target audience, and begin to build a portfolio for yourself.

While QC’s business unit is optional, I strongly recommend taking advantage of it. It’s the greatest way to prepare you to launch a successful career!

6 – Tutors are real, working makeup artists

This is a no-brainer! You wouldn’t study to become a doctor by training under someone whose only prior experience was binging Grey’s Anatomy, would you?

The same thought process should be applied to who you choose to learn makeup artistry from!

All of QC Makeup Academy’s tutors are industry professionals with years of experience under their belts. They have worked at makeup counters, own their own freelance businesses, have lent their expertise to fashion and award shows, and have even worked with celebrities! With this much experience behind them, there is no area that they cannot give advice on. The right tutors can prepare you for ANY path you want to take your career on!

7 – The school’s website is thorough, comprehensive, and informative

QC’s website is a perfect example! It provides in-depth information about:

  • All of their available courses;
  • The history of the school
  • Tuition rates;
  • Tutor profiles;
  • Student and grad success stories;
  • Reviews;
  • Contact information;
  • And so much more!

Everything that you need or want to know about the school is perfectly and clearly laid out.

8 – The school has some sort of social media presence (bonus points if they post original content on a regular basis!)

QC Makeup Academy can be found across all major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and Twitter. They have thousands of followers, and are constantly creating new, original content.

I also love how they’re always posting student/grad success stories, and sharing their work on their Instagram and Facebook. It’s great when online makeup schools appreciate and showcase the hard work of their students! It reiterates how much that school truly cares – while also allowing their students to gain more exposure and potential job opportunities!

9 – There are lots of great reviews

QC’s website reflects countless positive reviews. They also have a 4.9 rating on Facebook. It’s easy to see that the many students who have attended QC have had great success within their courses – and even more importantly, in their careers!

10 – You can easily contact the school’s Support Team

Reputable online makeup schools will have a team ready and willing to assist you, provide more information, etc. QC’s website clearly provides 3 different ways to contact their Student Support Specialist Team:

  • Email
  • Phone
  • Live chat

Support is available internationally, and is also available via social media as well. The team is known to respond promptly and thoroughly to all inquiries. With such a wide range of ways to gain support, students never feel alone. They’re always able to resolve any issue they may have quickly and with ease.

11 – You can connect with REAL students and alumni

Before investing your money into an online makeup school, you might want to first talk to real people who have enrolled, in order to find out how their experiences were. This is a smart idea, and one I highly recommend!

This is why I personally love the fact that QC Makeup Academy has a Virtual Classroom on Facebook. This is a private group where students and grads from around the world can come together and connect. It’s also a place where prospective students can go for a 2-week trial). This way, you can chat with real students, see how QC operates, and get a clear idea of whether it’s the right school for you – BEFORE spending any money!

Final Thoughts

Finding the right makeup school is the first step towards building the future of your dreams. In order to make sure you’re starting your journey on the right foot, put in the work. Research online makeup schools to find the best one for you!

I did my research, and I can tell you without a doubt that QC has been the best choice for me. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!

Makeup certification grad, Katie Stegeman

Graduate Feature: Katie Stegeman

By Graduate Feature No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Katie Stegeman and I am from Oshkosh, WI. I have 5 beautiful babies and have been married to my husband for almost 9 years.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

Makeup artistry is something that has been on my mind since I was in high school. I was almost going to go to cosmetology school, but then I found out that I was expecting my oldest. So, I decided not to go and instead got my BS in Business Management. In April of 2020, I decided to switch paths when quarantine started. That’s when I found QC Makeup Academy!

How would you describe your makeup style? What is your favorite makeup style?

My favorite makeup to do is natural beauty and bridal. I love enhancing a person’s natural features to make them glow. For bridal, I love being able to help that person’s beauty shine on their biggest day. Natural glam is my favorite style, though; adding just that little bit extra in the lashes or lips to really make a person’s features POP!

Why did you choose to pursue your makeup certification online instead of in-person?

For me, in-person training is not an option for me right now. I stay at home with my 5 babies. Caring for the youngest ones does not allow time for me to go to a physical school – not if I still wanted to sleep, haha! For me and my life right now, an online makeup certification was my only option.

Why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy, when compared to other makeup schools offered online?

I looked at schools for probably 6 months before I chose QC Makeup Academy. What drew me to QC was their:

They wanted me to succeed, and I felt that from day one. QC truly cares about their students! I knew I was not going to sign up and be left alone. In particular, the tutor feedback is invaluable! It really helps me to grow and become the best I can be.

What sort of makeup services does your business currently offer clients?

Currently, I offer a wide variety of makeup services and hair styling. So far, I have done makeup and hair for wedding showers, family photography shoots, senior portraits, and bridal / wedding day makeup.

As you mentioned, you also offer hair styling services. Why did you choose to add this additional skill-set to your makeup certification, and how has it been beneficial to your career in the beauty industry so far?

So far, it’s really helped with photography shoots! Being able to add some curls to my models’ and clients’ makeup services helps give them a more complete look for their photos.

You’ve graduated from QC’s Skincare Course. In your opinion, how has proper skincare knowledge improved your skills as a makeup artist?

Proper skincare knowledge has immensely helped my makeup skills! Understanding how a person’s skin will react to certain formulas, as well as what to use (and not use) for their desired looked, has been invaluable. Not to mention, this course has helped me better understand my own skin! Now I can really repair my own skin and switch my makeup, so that my face looks and feels better.

You’ve also completed QC’s Virtual Makeup program. Why did you choose to take this course, and why do you feel the training provided is valuable (especially during a global pandemic)?

I signed up almost immediately after the Virtual Makeup Course was launched. Especially now, our world is moving more and more towards digital platforms. I wanted to make sure that I could add this to my knowledge base. I wanted to maintain a high level of professionalism; truly understand what I could be doing to the best of my ability. Going through a live virtual consultation has really helped. I have already booked virtual consultations with some of my clients!

Your Global Beauty Workshop training has already come in handy for you! Tell us a little about how this special skill-set helped you stand out from the competition and book a new client!

I was recently scrolling through Facebook, and I saw a post open to ANY makeup artist in the area that had experience doing makeup on dark skin. Not a single other artist in our area had worked with dark and deep skin before! So, being the only MUA with that kind of training, I wound up booking the job on the spot!

We do not live in a very diverse area. But I feel like this training has made it possible for me to work on any single person that sits in my chair! Knowing how to work on ALL skin tones is necessary for every single makeup artist. Having this skill has been amazing – I’ve booked jobs I definitely would not have had otherwise!

You definitely believe in the value of education. In your opinion, why is professional training (and obtaining reputable makeup certifications) a smart move for aspiring makeup artists?

Doing someone else’s makeup was NOT something I wanted to guess at. It was not something I was just going to wing or figure out on the fly. Rather, it was something I wanted to KNOW how to do.

I did not want it to be a secondary skill. I didn’t want to simply watch social media and replicate what I saw on there. I wanted to have the best training behind me so that I could be AMAZING at it. Any makeup artist that I have really looked up to has had professional training. I knew I wanted to have that education behind me as well.

What is the #1 reason you recommend QC Makeup Academy?

The TOP reason why I recommend QC Makeup Academy is because of the tutors and their feedback. They will not let you fail, and they will not let you settle for less than your full potential. If you put in the work, do the assignments, really listen to all of the feedback, and genuinely try to improve, you cannot fail with QC Makeup Academy!

Finally: you have a crystal ball that lets you see 5 years into the future. Where do you see yourself and your makeup career?

If I could imagine where I would be in 5 years, I would have my calendar full of wedding clients! I’d also be highly recommended in my area for print ads and commercials for local businesses!

How would you describe your makeup style? Do you have a favorite makeup style?

My favorite style would be pinup. But I do love the ‘no makeup’ look, where the natural beauty is enhanced.

Tell us the origin behind the name of your business, Bella D’s Beauty.

I named my business after my kids, Bella and Daniel!

You offer clients a wide range of MUA services, such as bridal, special occasion, and photoshoot makeup. Do you have a particular area of makeup artistry that you gravitate to most? If so, why?

I definitely prefer bridal makeup. Being part of someone’s special day is very rewarding!

You recently submitted your work into a “Spring Bride” makeup competition (for which, your photo above was the submission). Why do you enjoy taking part in photoshoots?

Photoshoots are always great fun! The images you can achieve when working with the right photographers are amazing!

Your business has a lot of fantastic reviews! In your opinion, what is the #1 secret to providing excellent customer service as a makeup artist?

There’s only one secret to excellent customer service: do what you love and love what you do!

What is the proudest moment in your makeup career so far?

I did the makeup for the singer, Jonny Taylor. I did the makeup for the music video, “You’ll Never Break Me“.

Why did you choose to enroll in QC’s online makeup classes?

I chose QC based on the course outlines. Plus, a proper certification goes a LONG way in this industry!

Overall, how has your experience been in your online makeup classes?

My experience has been fantastic! The course outlines, materials, and assignments were all easy to understand and follow. The feedback I received from my tutor in the Master Makeup Artistry Course was essential to moving forward. For me, symmetry is the goal!

Why do you feel that continued education and additional skill-sets are critical to any working makeup artist? How do you expect your growing qualifications will strengthen your career?

The industry moves at such a fast speed. We must always stay on top of trends! Building on your qualifications will provide you with extra validation and earn even more of your clients’ trust.

Why would you recommend QC Makeup Academy’s online makeup classes to aspiring MUAs who wish to turn their passion into a successful career?

There are many reasons, but my top reason would be that all of QC’s online makeup classes are self-paced and extremely easy to follow!

What’s on the horizon for Bella D’s Beauty in 2021 and beyond?

As I mentioned earlier, I’m currently building my business’s studio. I plan to bring 2021 in with style! #BossLady

Finally: what is your absolute FAVORITE makeup product?

I have so many – but definitely Huda Beauty’s Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette!

makeup classes graduate, Elly Nunns

Ambassador Feature: Elly Nunns

By Student Ambassador One Comment

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi there! My name is Elly and I am a proud student here at QC Makeup Academy. I’m 22 years old, Maltese and Australian, and am incredibly passionate about both makeup and skincare.

A fun fact about me: I’m so tall that if my hair is in a bun, I’m too tall to sit up straight in my car!

You actually started your journey with an interest in skincare services. What is it about skincare consulting that appeals to you?

I developed adult acne after high school and quickly realized that I didn’t know how to take care of my skin. Acne can be painful mentally and physically. So, for the past 5 years, I’ve been researching as much as I can about healing the skin, and have been working in the retail beauty industry.

Once lockdown began and I realized that I would have to postpone going to beauty school, I saw that QC offered a full course on skincare consulting. Now, here I am!

Why did you decide to build upon this and add professional makeup artistry to your skill-set?

Despite the amazing support from friends and family to always follow my dreams, I never believed I was good enough to work in the beauty industry. After losing my full-time job due to COVID-19, I knew that I needed to grab the bull by the horns and have some confidence in myself.

After seeing the A-grade quality of QC’s makeup classes, I knew that I wanted to express my creative side through makeup, as well as my research side through skincare consulting. I also realized the joy I had in making people feel beautiful, and how much that fueled my passion.

Why did you decide to pursue your training online instead of in-person?

Many people think that I decided to study online because of the pandemic. However, I wanted to be assured that I wasn’t under a strict time limit, and that I could study from home while I go to work.

I have a tendency to multi-task, and I thoroughly enjoy having a hobby to do after work and on the weekends. So, why not become qualified in something I love? The flexibility of studying online has also been amazing for me because I care for my family members, which often occupies my time.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll in QC Makeup Academy’s online skincare and makeup classes?

The first quality I noticed about QC was the quality of the skincare and makeup classes. Not only are you provided with textbooks, but you also have access to:

  • In-depth videos by experienced makeup artists;
  • Personal and professional feedback;
  • Help by staff, whenever you need it;
  • An incredible community of students;
  • And so much more!

I was also incredibly impressed with the payment options. If quality skincare and makeup classes weren’t enough, you also receive a free makeup kit when you enroll in the Master Makeup Artistry Course. This way, anyone can complete the assignments, no matter the amount of makeup they own. Amazing!

You’ve since graduated from the Skincare Course. What were some of the most valuable lessons you learned from this training?

The Skincare Course was so fun and interesting that I am actually sad it’s over! As much as I already knew about skincare ingredients and techniques, QC presented the information in such a clear and exciting way. I felt like I finally had the confidence to relay the information onto my future clients.

The best thing about this course are the client scenarios provided through the assignments. Not only were they challenging; they prepared me with techniques for face-to-face work with clients, which I still use to this day.

Now a certified International Skincare Consulting Professional (ISCP), you have your own business, Shining Light Skincare Consulting. What has the experience been like so far, being an entrepreneur?

Just reading this question is so surreal to me! I never thought that I would be able to not only be qualified, but have the confidence to start my own business.

Despite only being in the early days, I feel so blessed to be able to have worked with amazing clients and be a part of their skincare journey. It can be exhausting trying to keep up with social media presence and being current with skincare trends. However, I love being able to share my passion with others and lead them to healthier skin. The confidence my clients end up having in themselves is what motivates me every day!

You’re also nearly finished QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. Do you have plans to add makeup services to your business in the future?

Originally, I had no plans to add makeup services to my resume. However, with the confidence I’ve gained from QC’s makeup classes, as well as the support of my fellow students, I’ve decided that I will offer bridal, commercial and formal makeup services.

I can’t wait! The resources that QC provides (to help you learn how to start a makeup business) have me feeling fully equipped and ready to jump right in!

makeup classes graduate, Elly Nunns, doing makeup on herself

You had celebrity makeup artist and international skincare expert, Nathan Johnson, as your tutor in both of your courses. How valuable was his feedback along the way and why?

I am BEYOND grateful to have Nathan as my tutor. This man is a genius! The feedback I received (and continue to receive) from him has stuck in my mind. It’s really enriched my makeup and skincare skills, to the point where I can see the changes in my work throughout my assignments.

Nathan has years of experience under his belt and it shows in the way he gives feedback. He always makes a point of celebrating the amazing skills we all have and the techniques that we’ve mastered along the way, whilst educating us on what we can improve on.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a 52-year-old mom of 2 amazing kids, who are grown and long gone. I’m an avid gardener and baker, and I love messing around with my Shih Tzu, Feta. I have always had a fascination with form and function. I was an avid artist for many years.  I also have a passion for interior design!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

When I was a teen in school, I was not what you would call “cute”. I did try, but I wasn’t the kind to be very girly. It wasn’t until I was older (and after reading countless magazines) that I really became interested in how makeup can transform a blank canvas – without transforming the person inside.

When I decided to enroll, honestly, it stemmed from a desire to take my makeup knowledge to the next level. I also want to be able to educate other mature women who may not have the same kind of knowledge about makeup that I do.

Why did you decide to pursue your makeup certification online, rather than in-person?

When choosing whether to attend school online or in-person, that was a no-brainer. I was already working when I enrolled. I also have a puppy to attend to (as well as a hubby). So, being offered the chance to do schooling online was perfect for me. Plus, who doesn’t want to learn in their pajamas?!

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll and get your makeup certification with QC Makeup Academy?

After taking a good year to research what was out there, QC Makeup Academy seemed like the logical choice!

They offered me real a makeup certification, and their Master Makeup Artistry Course offers informative videos, a very substantial makeup kit, and all the printed materials I could need. They also have a Virtual Classroom on Facebook where we can help each other. I find this type of lifetime support incredibly valuable. Enrolling with QC is a win-win!

As you’ve mentioned, you are currently taking our Master Makeup Artistry Course. How has your experience in this program been so far?

This course has been incredible! I’ve realized that so many things that I thought were correct (prior to getting training) actually weren’t. The feedback has also been tremendous. I get to move at my own pace, which is great. Not to mention, there is always SO much support in the Virtual Classroom. They’re like a second family to me now.

How useful have the course materials and assignments been, and how valuable has the feedback been from your tutor?

The materials in this course are first-rate, for sure! There is literally TONS of information, and it’s presented in an easy-to-follow way. The videos by Nathan Johnson are super fun to watch. He’s very educational in the way he works. My tutor, Pat Armstrong, always has encouraging things to say. She’s been MOST helpful in her critiquing!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your training?

Practice, practice,  practice! Also, how to train your eye to look differently at what you previously thought was correct.

You’ve recently joined QCs team of Student Ambassadors.  As an Ambassador, what is the #1 thing you want brand new students to know about QC Makeup Academy?

Besides having a ton of fun, the #1 thing is that you will receive a reputable makeup certification while learning at your own pace! With QC, you’re guided by amazing, talented tutors who are there for you for life – even after you graduate!

How has your career as a makeup artist been affected by COVID-19.  In what ways have you adjusted to this new normal?

While working on models and bridal parties has been put on hold (we’ve been put back to Stage 2 where I live), I have been working on doing online consultations and also virtual makeovers.

Plus, I will be updating my YouTube soon to include more looks for mature women. I also have a potential wedding next year, if all goes well. So, I’m pretty okay so far!

You’re passionate about shedding light on makeup artistry for mature skin.  In your opinion, why is this kind of representation so important?

In the makeup world, I think it’s extremely important to include those of us who are, let’s just say, no longer in our 20s. Just look at all of the stunning mature actresses out there, like Jane Fonda or Helen Mirren!

They all need a makeup artist! After researching, I found that there’s not a whole lot out there that’s really geared towards mature skin (or those of us with mature skin). I also find it very important that someone with a makeup certification be available to their clients for educational purposes as well. We can show mature clients what makes them shine, and that knowledge is power!

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

Ultimately, my goal is to work in the TV and film industry. But I’d also like to get a mature makeup line out there that’s easy, beautiful, and doable for anyone – even if they are younger. Mature women need AFFORDABLE products that do what they say. I’m hoping that I can be that person to make this happen!

If you could see into the future, which makeup or beauty trend do you foresee gaining popularity in 2021?

Heading into 2021, I predict – or can hope – that we will be keeping with the fresh, natural, glowing skin and makeup trends. That does not mean we can’t be creative. But I predict there will be looks focused around:

  • Soft, glowing skin
  • Wide-awake, soft, and beautiful eye looks
  • Powdery, soft focus lips

At least, I hope so anyway!

Finally, in your opinion, what is the TRUE secret to success?

Never stop learning, and put the work in.

If you don’t work hard, it won’t happen. You should also love what you do. If you don’t love it then it’s not for you!

5 Game-Changing Skills I Learned From My Online Makeup Course

By Education, Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Nadia Calabro is a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, as well as a QC alumnus. She has graduated from the Master Makeup Artistry Course, the Pro Makeup Workshop, and the Skincare Course. She is also the proud founder of her very own makeup business, Beauty Beyond the Mirror. Today, Nadia reveals the top 5 skills she learned through her online makeup course!

I have been in the beauty industry for well over 10 years. But it was just over 2 years ago that I decided to make a change, and focus my energy into the places that made me the happiest. From there, my heart led me to makeup!

I have two young children at home, so the hardest thing for me was figuring out how I was going to get the education I needed while still being a mom. That is, until I found QC Makeup Academy! QC offered an online makeup course that had everything I needed to succeed. Most importantly, their self-paced, online learning environment gave me the freedom to pursue my training while still being with my kids.

Through QC Makeup Academy, I graduated from three different programs. Once I’d finished, I felt confident in my art and decided to open my own freelance business, Beauty Beyond the Mirror. Through my business, I have done makeup applications for special events such as graduations, engagement parties, baptisms, and photoshoots. Most recently, I’ve been given a spot on a team of professionals who do makeup for weddings.

Before my Online Makeup Course

Before enrolling at QC Makeup Academy, I did have a makeup certificate through Cosmetology school. However, I never really felt like that was enough. So, I’d convinced myself that if I used that bit of knowledge, and watched YouTube tutorials on top of that, I would have everything I needed to be successful.

The thing was, each time I did an application, there was something about it that just wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t until doing my online makeup course through QC that I realized how little I actually knew.

I could go through the motions of a makeup application, but I had absolutely no technique or real knowledge. I understood very little (to nothing) about skin types, tones, undertones, or color correction. I lacked all of the fundamentals in makeup, which was ultimately causing me to be unsuccessful.

Enrolling with QC Makeup Academy

I wanted to do what made me happy, but because I had small children, I needed to find a way to do both. The only option for me was to do an online makeup course. To be honest, I didn’t even know where to begin when going down this route. What I did know was that everyone told me it was impossible.

over view of girl taking online makeup course

One day, while I was on Instagram, an ad for QC Makeup Academy popped up. I clicked the link, and from the moment I was sent to their website, I was intrigued. I read up on their online makeup course materials and who their instructors were. I also looked at past and present students, both on their website and through social media.

I knew they were the real deal!

I could have never known how incredible these classes would be. The text material and videos were so detailed, that I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything I would have learned in a physical classroom. The assignments really targeted the essential knowledge to do any makeup look – and then escalated to challenge that knowledge. I was pushed to put my own creativity into everything I did, which really helped me grow.

Through the assignments, I was able to see how important the basics of makeup are. They can be taken anywhere and applied to any look! I also learned that by knowing the basics, I was better able to create looks entirely on my own, rather than simply copying from others.

One of the most valuable things from my online makeup course was the feedback I received from my tutor. I appreciated that it was always honest and constructive. Even if it was to tell me what was not working in my looks, it helped me get better. By pin-pointing the areas where I was lacking, I could sit back, re-evaluate my application, and practice those areas more. As the course went on, I was encouraged to find ways to strengthen my weaker areas and sharpen my overall skin-set.

5 Skills I Gained Through My Online Makeup Course

QC Makeup Academy gave me all the skills I needed to have a successful career. They have rounded out my expertise, and have allowed me to create seamless applications that enhance my client’s natural beauty. Below are the top skills I have learned through my online training!

Skin Tones and Undertones

Skin tone and undertone are two very different things. Yet when it comes to makeup, they are equally as important. Skin tone is the color of the skin on the surface, while the undertone is the subtle hue beneath the surface.

Skin tones range from light, to medium, to dark. Skin undertones are considered war, cool, or neutral. Determining a person’s skin tone is easier than its undertone, as it can be seen just from looking at the person’s face. The easiest way to determine a person’s undertone is by looking at their veins. If their veins appear to be bluer or purple, then they have a cool undertone. But if the veins appear to be greener, they have a warm undertone. If it’s hard to determine what color is more dominant, it’s likely that the person has a neutral undertone.

By knowing this information, I was able to ensure that I picked the right foundation that would give them the most natural results for each individual.  Without properly matching the foundation to their skin, you run the risk of:

  • Making their face appear green or gray
  • Making their face a different color than their neck
  • Creating a mask-like effect that’s overtly unnatural
female models with different skin tones

Color Theory

By using the color wheel, I was able to learn how to color correct areas on a person’s face that were not wanted. The color wheel teaches which colors cancel each other out. For example, to remove redness in the skin, you would use a green color corrector. By cancelling out unwanted colors in your client’s skin, you’re able to create a more even skin tone. This then allows for an easier application of foundation, and a more perfect complexion overall.

Primers

We have all heard of primers, without ever really knowing the importance of them. The fact is, facial and eye primers set the mood for the entire application!  Without primer, you do not get the proper base for application. You won’t be able to get the most out of your products.

Using an eye primer is particularly important because it keeps oils at bay and prevents the eye shadow from smudging, breaking, or moving. It also enhances eyeshadow colors and helps them to pop. Using primers on the face and eyes keeps the makeup in place all day!

Classic Makeup Technique

Trends will always come and go. While it’s important to learn these trends, it’s equally as important – if not more so – to learn the basic, classic looks.

Classic makeup techniques have proven to surpass the test of time. They are techniques that have influenced every trendy look that’s ever been created, in one way or another. By taking an online makeup course and learning the classics, you can take a look anywhere!

Some of these classic techniques include:

  • Eyeliner (basic to the cat eye)
  • Filling in eye brows
  • Enhancing the natural crease in the eye
  • Blending eyeshadow
  • Lipliner

Working with Different Skin Types

Not every client is going to walk in with a perfect canvas. We aren’t made like that. As artists, we need to adjust to each person’s individual needs. In order to do this, you need to first determine if they have dry, oily, combination, or normal skin.

While I truly learned all about skin types from QC’s Skincare Course, my online makeup course still touched on this in a beneficial way. Makeup artists need proper skin knowledge if we want to be the best at what we do. Without it, we cannot properly prep the skin, and could potentially use the wrong products for our client’s skin type.

Why YOU Should Consider an Online Makeup Course

Through QC Makeup Academy, I have been able to achieve my dreams and do it in a way that worked for me. QC’s online courses allowed me to still be a mom while I learned my craft. The programs are self-paced, so I could choose when and how much I focused on my studies. Since students get a full 2 years to complete their online makeup course, I was also provided the room to focus more on the areas that needed particular attention and never feel rushed.

On top of this, QC’s tutors are real industry experts with extraordinary experience. They’ve worked in all areas of the industry and have years behind them. Their feedback pin-points areas of strength and weakness in order to open your eyes to your own work. With their guidance, you can be sure to get things right and symmetrical. They push you to your limits so that you’re able to see your own potential – and grow!

makeup products used for online makeup course

Sometimes, what holds people back from pursuing their dreams is how much getting a proper education can cost them. QC Makeup Academy is amazing for this, as their monthly payments are SO low! They also offer amazing monthly promotions.

It’s also worth mentioning that the support through QC is endless! This is more of a family than a school, because everyone wants to ensure you are successful in your endeavors. There’s a full team of Student Support Specialist who are always ready and willing to answer any questions you may have along the way.

One of my favorite parts of being in the QC community is having access to the online Virtual Classroom on Facebook. This is a safe place where current, past, and even future students can connect and grow together. We can work through our challenges together, learn as a group, and celebrate each other’s successes.

Taking the first step towards following your dreams is always the hardest. But I promise you, it’s worth it. Start on the road to happiness TODAY by enrolling with QC Makeup Academy!

Makeup Artistry Career Spotlight: A Day on Set as an Editorial MUA

By Graduate Feature, Makeup Careers No Comments

Paula Alleyne is QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, as well as a graduate of QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. Her professional makeup business, PAULA MONIQUE, specializes in bridal, editorial, and special occasions makeup. Connect with Paula on Instagram or in the QC Virtual Classroom on Facebook!

What is Editorial Makeup?

Editorial makeup is a type of makeup artistry that can be summed up as the work you would see in print. This can be for beauty campaigns, fashion magazines, etc. Typically, editorial makeup is either simple, clean beauty looks, or extravagant creations that are not typically used in every-day wear.

Working as an editorial makeup artist is a different environment from being hired to provide services for a special occasion, such as for a live wedding or a client’s special event. In editorial shoots, the makeup artist is but one of the many players behind the scenes. Everyone works together to prepare the talent for a determined image.

A makeup artistry career for an editorial MUA spans various areas. One can work work in stylized shoots, be featured in magazine spreads for beauty and/or avant-garde fashion, or work for a company in their advertisement campaigns.

Why Editorial Makeup?

My love for natural beauty and clean, classic looks – which are often seen within beauty and fashion magazines, or in portraits of celebrities – drew me towards editorial makeup artistry. To me, there is an appeal in looking at an image, seeing the person highlighted, and not having the beauty of his or her face being overpowered by makeup.

However, when you take a closer look at the image, you also see all the tiny details that build up and make the final image what it is. For example, it may be a soft smoke of a bronze color that effortlessly ties back in with the bronze jewelry being advertised, or the attire being worn.

My husband, Rommel Alleyne, is a photographer. He and I have been working together on several shoots. Over time, we have learned each other’s styles in makeup artistry and photography, and I have learned how makeup application translates on camera.

There is no substitute for the experience gained working on photoshoots! Even when I am not the makeup artist, and work instead as the lighting assistant, I’m still learning. I’ve become more appreciative of the time of day, lighting, and talent positioning – which all play a vital role in the final image.

Working as a makeup artist for editorials also creates networking opportunities with photographers and models alike. One of my favorite editorial shoots was on set with a Barbadian photographer, Joel Brooks, and a Barbadian jazz singer, Kellie Cadogan. Prior to the shoot, we played around with different attire and jewelry, and concluded with two pieces we would with.

Time was limited. By the end of shooting the first look, the crunch was on for the second shooting. The makeup application for the first look was with neutral brown tones, which were transferrable to the second photo session. However, I knew that a slight smoke and hint of grey would add to the second piece.

So, I got permission to proceed with the color transition. I felt the time squeeze and needed to work extremely quickly. I did the transition, and looking at the final photos, I’m glad I made that intuitive suggestion. As you’ll see below, the end product was good!

A Day on Set

In the world of editorial makeup artistry, working on set can be summed up into one word: “ATTITUDE”. The attitude you have can either make you or break you.

Always have a heart to serve! As the makeup artist, you are but one person within the team.

Time matters! Get to set early to prep your station and be ready for the talent.

Talk! Have an open dialogue with the team, especially with the photographer prior to shooting. As the shooting unfolds, speak with the photographer to ensure the desired look is being achieved.

Include the talent in your discussions. Let the talent inform you of his or her skin type, allergic reactions, and any prior negative experiences with makeup applications.

Understand the overall image to be achieved. Even if adjustments have to be made during the set, and your input is required, ensure that your suggestions are in keeping with the desired look.

Do be professional. Always!

Enjoy the process! Use the experience to meet other professionals, develop your strengths, and identify areas for improvement.

The Benefits of Training with QC Makeup Academy

One of the main benefits of obtaining my professional makeup artistry certification with QC Makeup Academy is the mental preparation the school instills in its students. In one of my Business Units, QC spoke about the importance of networking. This can be in the in the form of:

  • Volunteering
  • Assisting
  • Interning
  • Job shadowing
  • And much more!

When starting out as a makeup artist, providing editorial work will often begin through volunteering. As within any profession, volunteering should never be frowned upon. In the right place, you’ll find that you’ll receive the same positive attitude, energy, and professionalism that would be given to any paid employee.

In addition to the mental preparation encouraged by QC, you’re also taught all of the practical skills needed to thrive as a professional makeup artist. For example, you’ll learn about accurate foundation application, skin and color correction, blending, and understanding the basics of skincare. All of these factors play a crucial role in creating flawless skin, as well as the natural beauty often associated with editorial makeup.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a retired special education teacher. In my 33 years as an educator, I have taught students from ages 5 through 17, in multiple different settings. I have worked with students that have disabilities; ranging from learning disabled, autistic, speech/language disorders, and students with severe/profound multiple disabilities. I am also married and have 2 adult children.

Why did you decide to earn your makeup artist certification and become a professional MUA?

I have always been fascinated by the transformation that makeup techniques can make. Since my retirement, I am now able to devote my time and attention to studying and practicing my passion. I have a curiosity for makeup and all it can do!

makeup artist certification graduate, Mark Lenzi, wearing bruise SFX makeup

How would you describe your makeup style?

I would define my makeup style as a natural, clean look. Most of my practicing has been on models with more mature skin, or on women who do not typically wear makeup.

It’s an awesome feeling to apply makeup, and explain what I’m using and what I am doing. To have the client be amazed at how they look with such little makeup applied is a wonderful moment. Unless I’m doing a fantasy or special effects look, my style can be summed up as: “less is more”.

You aced both your Master Makeup Artistry Course and your Special FX Makeup Course. Congratulations! Overall, how did you find the online learning process and the assistance you received from your instructors?

I was very excited to enroll, but also very anxious. The Mastery Makeup Artistry Course was my first ever online course. But I found that the Student Support Specialists are extremely helpful. I don’t know what I would have done without the help and support from Shannon, in particular.

The entire process of enrolling, getting started, accessing your course materials, and submitting your Units is all very clear. ALL of my instructors/tutors – Nathan Johnson, Michele Mulkey, Corianne Cowan, and Laurie Vukich – are amazing. They provide positive feedback, as well as advice and ways to improve your work. They push me to be the best makeup artist and hair stylist I can be!

makeup artist certification graduate, Mark Lenzi, wearing bruise and wounds SFX makeup

What is it about special effects makeup that you find the most fascinating?

It is so fun! All makeup can transform you, but special effects makeup can add that extra bit of shock. It’s also very challenging making the effect look “real”, and not just applied for shock value. There are lots of subtleties which may seem simple, but are not. For example: adding 5 o’clock shadow to a man, adding a mustache or beard, and old age makeup are all very tricky.

You’re also currently on Unit C of QC’s Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you decide to include hair styling in your overall repertoire?

I chose to enroll in the Hair Styling Essentials Course to broaden my skill-set. Since the theater is a venue I hope to work more in, having hair and makeup skills will be an asset. I did the makeup for 2 community plays, and the directors had actually asked me if I also did hair. At the time, I did not – so I knew I needed to get hair styling training!

old age special effects makeup

On top of the professional makeup you’ve done for community theatre productions, you’ve also been involve in a calendar shoot and a kids’ show. Can you tell us a little bit about these experiences?

I did the makeup for a community theater show called Calendar Girls. In addition to the show, they made a calendar to go along with the show, which I also did the makeup for. Other than practicing for my Course, this was my first “professional” experience. It was awesome. I had so much fun!

I had to teach myself how to apply a bald cap. (This was before I took the Special FX Makeup Course.) I also did some makeup and assisted a bit with hair for a community children’s show, Prince and Princesses. On top of that, I got to do some makeup applications for a local thrift store’s fashion show fundraiser.

I was supposed to do the makeup for the community show Little Women this past summer, but it’s been postponed due to the pandemic.

What did you choose to pursue your makeup artist certification through QC Makeup Academy?

Since my retirement, I’ve been able to devote my time and attention to studying makeup artistry. I browsed online an looked at the different online makeup schools, but QC Makeup Academy immediately caught my attention. I did my research, and decided to call and speak with someone.

I was anxious to begin an online class, having never taken one – especially in makeup, nonetheless! I spoke with Shannon a few times, and she was so encouraging and motivating. She stated that there was assistance whenever I needed it. I did need to call a couple of times… and she was right! Shannon and all of the online support staff are extremely positive and helpful.

makeup artist certification graduate, Mark Lenzi, wearing fresh bruise SFX makeup

Is there any particular makeup technique you’re currently working to improve?

Of course, all the time! But one skill that I need to practice a lot, in order to master its many beautiful techniques, is eyeliner. There are so many gorgeous looks, and so many different kinds of eyeliner makeup to choose from.

What’s on the horizon for you and your makeup career?

I want to continue my theater experiences, as well as participate in more community shows, fashion shows, and fundraisers. I was supposed to do a friend’s daughter’s wedding this June, but that unfortunately has been canceled.

I would also like to do makeup and hair for friends and special events. I would be very interested in volunteering for a group home for young adults with disabilities, and do their hair and makeup for special events (such as proms and dances).

Imagine: it’s Halloween, and you use your special effect makeup skills to turn yourself into ANY character you want. Which SFX look do you choose?

I have done a “zipper face” look for fun in the past, and it received a lot of positive feedback – including a lot of, “Eww!” “Yuck!” “Gross!”

So, I guess it looked pretty good. I also enjoy creating my own deep cuts with added extras, such as a large fish hook or insects.

By About the School, Student Ambassador No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Paula Alleyne. I am married, live in the wonderful Caribbean island of Barbados, and I decided to take makeup artistry more seriously within the last three years. It’s only when I started on my professional makeup journey that I realized my love for makeup actually began years ago.

When I was younger, I remember doing makeup on my neighbor. I loved being able to do something that helped boost her self esteem. I also always loved to read makeup books and fashion magazines, and I was absolutely enthralled with eye shadows.

As I became serious about makeup artistry, I became more selective of who I followed on social media. Once I knew that I wanted to only learn from the best, I decided I wanted to become professionally trained.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

The answer to this is two-fold:

  1. I wanted to develop my brand as a qualified makeup professional, and
  2. I didn’t want to just follow what everyone was doing on social media. Instead, I wanted to learn the actual techniques and proper education behind makeup application.

How would you describe your makeup style? Do you have a particular niche?

My makeup style is clean and classic. My niche is for persons who prefer natural enhancements of their features through makeup application.

You’ve recently become one of QC Makeup Academy’s Student Ambassadors. Congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about what your new role will entail?

As a Student Ambassador, my main responsibilities entail:

  • Encouraging new students who have enrolled in QC’s online makeup school
  • Providing support and encouragement within the Virtual Classroom on Facebook
  • Promoting QC Makeup Academy as an institution of quality learning
  • Creating high quality content, such as blog articles
  • Directing potential students who may have queries about QC’s online makeup school and educational process

Your makeup business specializes in editorial and bridal services. What is it about these areas of the beauty industry that appeal to you the most?

These areas appeal to me because they fit right into my style of natural, clean beauty!

What has been the most challenging (and the most rewarding) part of starting your own business?

Firstly, the most challenging part was being confident in my style. Due to social media, I observed that many persons loved the heavily applied makeup and heavily sculpted features. As a professional artist, I can create that look if needed. However, I prefer to enhance a person’s features – not transform it into something that’s not theirs.

The most rewarding is when clients request my services, and it’s because they want the natural enhancements, and they love the finished product!

How did your online makeup school training assist you in your journey of starting and running a successful MUA business?

Obtaining an education with QC Makeup Academy assisted in my journey in numerous ways:

  1. I became knowledgeable about makeup application techniques for various faces. Each client has their own unique skin tone, skin type, eye and facial shape, etc. Understanding these differences assists with providing an application that’s best suited for each individual.
  2. QC’s online makeup school has always promoted professionalism on the job, and this is a value which has greatly helped me in my interactions with clients. I always seek to maintain professionalism on the job. In fact, I’ve had many clients recognize and comment on this!
  3. QC Makeup Academy provides business insights for makeup artists, such as the development of contracts and business document templates. These customizable templates have proven incredibly useful in my own business transactions!

You graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry course with flying colors! Overall, how did you find the program?

I found the Master Makeup Artistry Course to be informative and interesting! I enjoyed learning all about makeup artistry in various fields such as film, theater, and SFX. The practical assignments focusing on SFX makeup were loads of fun!

How was your experience being tutored by QC executive instructor and celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson?

It was great! Having Nathan critique my work was such a confidence booster. He was always encouraging, yet critical. His feedback motivated me to continuously improve. Hearing an expert within the field commend my work made me recognize that once quality was maintained, it surpassed geographical boundaries!

What made you want to enroll in online makeup school, and why did you ultimately choose QC Makeup Academy?

Before pursuing online makeup school, I originally looked around for a brick-and-mortar school where I lived. However, the options appeared extremely limited, and I was unsure about the depth of content.

I then decided to pursue online learning. Whatever I chose, I knew it had to be flexible, as my time was already limited. Just as importantly, I had to be convinced that the online makeup school in question wasn’t a sham.

I ultimately chose QC Makeup Academy when I saw how active they are on social media. I realized it was also an established educational institution, accredited with an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau. All of this definitely allayed my fears, and showed me that QC is a legitimate as they come!

What advice would you give aspiring makeup artists who are considering online makeup school in order to earn their professional certification?

Go for it! “Never stop learning” is one of my stances. In this current environment, and in light of COVID-19, there’s been such a surge in online learning. It has become the new norm, and is truly the safest form of obtaining a solid education these days! Earning a professional certification can only enhance your ability, so don’t delay.
