Why I’m Taking QC’s Global Beauty Workshop

By Education, Global Beauty, Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career 2 Comments

Katie Stegeman is a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, graduate, and current student. Today, she discusses the reasons why she’s chosen to enroll and get professionally certified in the Global Beauty Workshop.

A Little About Me…

Hi, everyone! My name is Katie Stegeman. I’m a stay-at-home mom of five (soon to be six) beautiful babies. I am also a professional makeup artist. When I first started my training at QC Makeup Academy, I had very little training in makeup. The only makeup I did was on myself – and I’ll admit, it wasn’t the greatest.

Since enrolling with QC, however, I have become a professionally certified International Skincare Consulting Professional (ISCP) and have received a certificate in virtual makeup services. I’m also currently working on completing the following additional courses:

  • Master Makeup Artistry
  • Pro Makeup Workshop
  • Hair Styling Essentials
  • Airbrush Makeup Workshop
  • Portfolio Development Workshop
  • Global Beauty Workshop

The Global Beauty Workshop is actually what I’m here to discuss with you today. I’d like to give you some insight into why I chose to get trained in this particular area of makeup artistry… and why YOU should, too!

What is Global Beauty?

Global beauty is so important for every makeup artist to understand. Ideally, any kind of person should be able to sit in your makeup chair, and you should be able to identify and understand:

  • Their skin tone;
  • Their undertone;
  • The texture of their skin;
  • Products to use;
  • Products to avoid, etc.

Why is Global Beauty Important?

This extensive knowledge is VITAL to your success! Global beauty training allows your skill-set to be inclusive to everyone. After all, not all skin is going to be the same. One client’s skin might react one way to makeup, while another’s will react differently.

Plus, global beauty training will make you well-versed in all the different types of skin tones. You don’t want to be known as the makeup artist who can only work on one tone, do you? No! You should be able to work with fair skin tones, dark skin tones, deep skin tones, golden skin tones, and everything in-between!

Speaking from personal experience, global beauty training has already helped me advance my makeup techniques. As a beauty expert, clients are relying on you to understand their specific needs. This is the ONLY way you’ll be able to give them their ideal results.

For example, say a client wants a traditional South Asian bridal look. You’ll need to understand everything – from the primer you’ll need to use, to the type of coverage this look requires, etc. Traditional South Asian bridal looks are very different from its modern counterpart.

Global beauty training has its place in editorial and media makeup, too. Not all skin tones will show up the same on camera. Each skin tone has its own needs and requirements in order for it to look its best with this particular medium.

I haven’t even covered the tip of the iceberg, to be honest. When you get trained in global beauty, you’re going to be learning a LOT of invaluable information that you didn’t know before. You’ll even be taught things like henna tattoos (which I’m particularly interested in learning about). If your goal is to strengthen your resume and take your career to the next level, my point is: global beauty training is the way to go!

Why I Enrolled in QC’s Global Beauty Workshop

I enrolled because I’m always trying to absorb as much information as I possibly can. When I started with QC Makeup Academy last year, I didn’t have a lot of makeup knowledge. I wanted that education. My training needed to be as diverse as possible – and QC’s Global Beauty Workshop definitely meets this criteria.

A lot of the makeup artists in my area are not trained. To set myself apart, I wanted to gain a legitimate foundation. I wanted a reputable certification I could physically showcase to others. This way, clients would notice that I was different from the others… and it’s been working!

Enrolling in QC’s Global Beauty Workshop has already booked me clients! I know it will only continue to aid in my business from here.

What You’ll Learn

It would be impossible for me to fit the entire course curriculum into this article, because there’s just so much incredible information taught to you. However, here’s a short list of some of the skills you’ll learn by enrolling in the Global Beauty Workshop:

  • Understanding and working with a wide variety of skin tones;
  • Corrective makeup for different skin tones;
  • Special focuses on deep skin tones, fair skin tones, medium & olive skin tones, and golden skin tones;
  • Bridal, editorial, and other specialized looks for various skin tones;
  • Building your makeup kit;
  • Working with henna;
  • Marketing your services;
  • And so much more!

The course itself is less than 40 hours long. However, you have up to 2 full years to complete it. A lot of grads found that by devoted 1-2 hours per week on their studies, they were able to graduate in as little as 3-6 months (sometimes less).

The best part? Once you’ve graduated, you’ll receive a physical copy of your Global Beauty Workshop certificate to proudly add to your resume!

Applying My Global Beauty Training to Real Life

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve actually since booked even more clients, thanks to my global beauty training with QC. These are clients I know I would not have booked otherwise, because they had very specific needs that required the proper training on my end.

Here’s a perfect example… There was a client in my area who was looking for a makeup artist with experience in darker skin tones. As it turned out, the overwhelming majority of MUAs in our area did NOT have training in this. (Admittedly, where we live is not overly diverse.) Because I was the only makeup artist who saw the post and knew how to work with darker skin tones, I booked the job!

Becoming a trained global beauty makeup artist has made SUCH a huge difference for me. Taking this workshop has given me that little extra training that proves to go a LONG way. I now properly understand international makeup techniques and can work with any client interested in my services.

What Being a QC Student Looks Like

Within a day or two after enrolling in the Global Beauty Workshop, I received direct online access to my digital course materials. Not long after that, QC mailed a physical box of materials right to my doorstep. These physical materials included books, henna tools, and a cream concealer. Instructional videos, quizzes, and assignments are also provided as part of the digital resources.

If I’m being completely honest, I recommend ALL of the classes at QC Makeup Academy. The tutors have been outstanding! They care about helping me become the best makeup artist I can be. I truly appreciate all of their support and feedback. The Virtual Classroom on Facebook has also been one of my favorite parts about being a QC student! Being able to connect with other students, grads, and instructors is wonderful.

I’m a busy mom, so the self-paced course timeline has been invaluable, too. The Support Staff at the school have also been amazing. There are days when my children need more from me. Being able to take a day/week/month off to be there for my family is immensely helpful!

Before enrolling, I’d looked at QC Makeup Academy’s reviews. I did a lot of investigating into what the students had to say about the courses and their experiences. It took me a long time to make the decision to enroll. But looking back, I am SO happy I found QC Makeup Academy. It’s changed my life – and it can change YOURS, too!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read what I had to say. I truly appreciate it! If you want to come connect with me and other students before signing up with QC Makeup Academy, you’re welcome to join the Virtual Classroom for a 2-week trial. Feel free to find me there and ask any questions you might have. I’m always happy to help!

Ambassador Feature: Alba Carpio

By About the School, Student Ambassador 2 Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Alba R. Carpio, and my life has been a roller coaster for the past few years. But right now, I can say I’m happily married and a proud mom. My love for characterization, sci-fi, and horror films started when I was a kid. When I went to University, I got my Bachelor Degree in Architecture.

However, when my father passed away, everything changed. I went through a very hard time; dealing with depression and anxiety. During this time, my passion for makeup revived. At first, I used it as a therapy. But it ending up becoming my safe place.

What made you decide to change career paths and switch from architecture to makeup artistry?

When I graduated, we had plans to move to Europe. But when my father passed away, we had to stay in Mexico and take care of the family business. Then I became pregnant. At that time, my husband and I decided it would be best for me to stay at home.

If I’m being honest, I revived my love for makeup through social media and watching influencers. Over time, though, that wasn’t enough. I wanted to learn everything in a professional way – especially Special FX makeup. So, I investigated all of my options and that’s how I found QC Makeup Academy. This school gave me the possibility of doing this as a career!

Prior to getting any training, you mentioned that you learned makeup primary through social media. When was it you realized that social media makeup is completely different from real-world makeup?

I actually found this out the hard way. One day, I got a phone call from my husband, asking me out on a romantic date. I wanted to surprise him with the makeup techniques I’d just learned from YouTube. When we arrived at the restaurant, he said in a very gentle way, “Babe, I think you have dirt on your face… take this tissue so you can clean up.”

It was embarrassing! But when I looked in the mirror, it was obvious that my contour was completely overdone. As QC Makeup Academy makes clear in their training, social media and real-life makeup are designed for completely different environments. Social media makeup is definitely not meant for everyday life.

Why did you decide to enroll in an online makeup school, rather than an in-person one?

Between being a new mom and dealing with all the tasks of running the family business, I had no time or energy to go to a physical school. But QC Makeup Academy did give me time and space to do my courses at my own pace. Plus, their amazing programs have been designed by industry professionals, and are led by the best of the best, in terms of tutors. This all gave me confidence that I was making a good investment.

So, how did you find out about QC Makeup Academy?

Online research! I knew that with my schedule, the only way I was going to be able to study was with an online school. I investigated very carefully into all my options. Once I found QC Makeup Academy, I quickly say that they offered everything I wanted!

Some of the reasons I chose to enroll are:

  • You have up to 2 years to finish your courses.
  • You have options to pay the course all at once or through affordable payment plans.
  • QC Makeup Academy’s certifications are internationally-recognized.
  • QC’s accredited with an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau.
  • They have very complete and interesting programs suitable for both beginning and advanced makeup artists.
  • Students are provided with personalized feedback from professional tutors.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course and Special FX Makeup Course. How was your experience with these programs, and how would you say they’ve helped you grow as a makeup artist?

QC changed my life in the best possible way. It’s not just the experience of learning professional makeup techniques; it’s also the personalized feedback you get from your tutors. They take the time to analyze your work and give you constructive criticism. Their goal is to help you grow by offering you advice, tips, tricks, and encouragement to be the best version of yourself as an artist.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an advanced student. Your previous experience, social medial followers, or job position doesn’t matter either. QC Makeup Academy always make you feel respected and welcome. Personally, my makeup skills are now at a completely different level when compared to where they were at 3 years ago!

You’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Airbrush Makeup Workshop. Why do you feel that these additional skills and qualifications will make your makeup career all the more successful?

I firmly believe that all of QC’s programs properly complement one another. For example, skincare is very important because it helps you understand how to take care of your canvas. With this basic knowledge, it’s easier to personalize the makeup routine for each client, since everyone has different skin types and needs.

The Pro Makeup Workshop goes into more detail about advanced makeup techniques, concepts, and applications. This next-level program is meant to help you perfect your skills and build upon what you learned in the MMA Course. Finally, the Airbrush Workshop adds yet another level of professionalism to your craft, both in beauty makeup and SFX makeup.

I can’t stop learning – this career path is just so fascinating to me!

How useful have the various course materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been? In what ways have they helped you grow stronger as an MUA?

At this moment of my life, I am mainly a social media makeup artist. But I also book the occasional freelance job for film, bridal, or special event makeup on the weekends. The knowledge I’ve gotten from QC Makeup Academy has helped me understand when to use certain makeup techniques, according to the occasion.

Like I said before, social media makeup is designed for a self-controlled, 2D environment. Real-life makeup, on the other hand, is designed for a high-definition, 3d environment. You can’t control the angles in which your artistry will be showcased. So, you need to understand the proper techniques… because there’ll be no place to hide imperfections!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from QC Makeup Academy’s professional training?

With QC Makeup Academy, you learn:

  • The importance of skincare;
  • Proper makeup application for every kind of client;
  • Lifesaving makeup techniques;
  • How to treat your clients;
  • And more.

But to me, the MOST important lessons I’ve learned have been about proper hygiene and etiquette as an MUA. This knowledge alone elevates you to another level! Most aspiring makeup artists nowadays educate themselves strictly with YouTube videos.

However, beyond the popular trends and/or makeup tutorials available on social media, it’s very uncommon to find educational videos discussing topics such as taking care of your makeup kit, sanitizing your tools, etc. Being a makeup artist is so much more than simply applying makeup to another person’s face. This type of education is essential for success.

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC Makeup Academy?

QC Makeup Academy will give you the basic tools you need to pursue a successful career as a makeup artist. It doesn’t matter which area you want to grow in professionally – they cover it all!

Once you have these tools, it’ll then be up to YOU to become the artist you want to be. For that, you will need to dedicate time and practice. My personal experience has been amazing. I couldn’t be more grateful for what QC has done for me. As a Student Ambassador, I want to help others follow their own dreams.

You have over 266k followers on TikTok and over 17k on YouTube. What advice would you give to new MUAs for growing their online presence and increasing their following?

My social media channels were never about having a big following or becoming popular. They started as a personal space where I could express myself and what I love. They’ve helped me heal and make it through a very difficult time in my life.

What I can tell makeup artists who want to grow their social media is to NEVER let the numbers control you. Don’t let the views discourage you, or the likes make you feel as if you are not talented enough. Just do what you love and the numbers will come eventually.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I believe there is no small job. Everything can give you experience and knowledge to grow as an artist!

To start, I want to retire from our job at the family business and dedicate myself full-time to makeup artistry. I’m currently working towards this now. I also want to travel to congresses, take makeup master classes around the world, and eventually, teach them myself. Additionally, I’d like to dedicate more time to my social media and explore different makeup techniques I haven’t tried yet. I’d also love to learn even more about Special FX makeup.

I guess, when I think about it, I just want to try it ALL!

What is the #1 piece of advice that you’d like to give to aspiring makeup artists who are thinking of pursuing a professional career in 2021?

I want to inspire others to never give up on themselves. It’s is never too late to pursue your dream career! There’s honestly no better feeling than dedicating your life to something that makes you happy and that you have passion for. You’ll never get tired of it.

If this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, just go with it! QC Makeup Academy will give you all the tools you need, but it’ll be up to you to figure out how you want to use them.

How to Become a Makeup Artist: The Importance of Constructive Criticism

By Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career 2 Comments

Want to learn how to become a makeup artist? QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Cheri Stevens, reveals why being able to accept constructive criticism is crucial to your career’s success! Cheri is currently enrolled in the Master Makeup Artistry Course. Read her full Ambassador Feature here!

What is Constructive Criticism?

So, you have a passion for makeup and have decided to turn it into an actual career. That’s awesome! You’re in for an exciting journey – but it won’t be one without hard work and dedication. If you’re serious about your craft and want to know how to become a makeup artist in the professional world, one of the key things you’ll need to be able to do is accept constructive criticism.

Constructive criticism is a very necessary tool. As an MUA, you’re more than likely going to encounter it more than once throughout your career. If you try to become a makeup artist and assume you’ll never be given feedback or critiques, it’s going to be a very jarring awakening when it eventually happens. This is why it’s important to go into your new career with realistic expectations.

Constructive criticism can come in many forms. Here are just a few general examples that one might hear in everyday life:

  • Someone critiquing your outfit: “These colors are good, but they don’t best complement your features. These colors would look amazing with your hair and eye color!”
  • Someone critiquing your cooking: “This chicken looks a bit too pink; it might need some more time.”
  • Someone critiquing your hairstyle: “This hairstyle doesn’t flatter your face because it’s more meant for [such and such] face shape. If you ever wanted to try adding some layers, I think that’d really draw attention to your awesome bone structure!”

Constructive Criticism vs. Insults

woman getting insulted

It’s important to know that constructive criticism is NOT the same as being insulted or disrespected. The latter is meant solely to bring you down and has negative intent. Constructive criticism, on the other hand, is meant to help you. Moreover, it’s necessary for personal growth.

When someone is honest with you and providing constructive feedback, their intent is positive. They’re trying to help you see what could be done better, so YOU can do better next time. Now, I get it: receiving constructive criticism can sometimes suck. No one overly likes to hear when what they’ve done wasn’t perfect.

But imperfections are what make us human. Everyone gets constructive criticism at some point (or many points) throughout their life. But it’s important that you try your best to take with an open mind – especially while you complete your professional makeup training.

After all, if you really want to know how to become a makeup artist, the key is going to be remembering that constructive criticism will ultimately help you become the best artist you can be!

How to Become a Makeup Artist: Constructive Criticism as an MUA

Makeup artistry is a VERY competitive field. You will not be the best right away, nor will you be the only one. Constructive criticism in our field is necessary so that we can learn proper techniques and grow as an artist.

What might we hear as makeup artists, in terms of constructive criticism? Here are few examples of feedback you might get, particularly while getting trained:

  • “Watch your symmetry with the eyes.”
  • “Your blending needs more practice.”
  • “You need to better color match for the correct skin tone.”
  • “Try to do less of a blocked eyebrow and more natural, hair-like strokes.”

Why Critique from Others is Essential

Constructive criticism plays a fundamental role in the learning process. As an artist, the learning process never truly ends – you just get better at what you do. But there will always be room for improvement and growth. If you take offense to everything that’s being said about your work, you aren’t really listening to the people who are trying to help. As such, you’ll keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

As a result, this will severely impair your success in the field. You’ll only have so much room to grow before you become stagnant. Listening, learning, and applying the suggestions given to you is crucial. When you’re receptive to constructive feedback, you AND your career will soar to even greater heights because you’ll learn how to see your work with a fresh set of eyes.

For instance, would you want to create a look for someone – such as a bride – and later realize that it wasn’t what you expected? Even worse, what if it wasn’t what SHE expected? Of course not. You’d be hurting your reputation, all because you didn’t have the proper education and refused assistance. We know you don’t want that!

The Importance of Constructive Criticism in Your Makeup Course

As part of your professional makeup training, you’ll be paired with a tutor. This tutor will be an industry expert with years of experience. In other words, they know their stuff and possess an insight you don’t yet have.

If you’ve never before had proper makeup training, chances are there’ll be at least one thing you’ve been doing wrong. Your instructor’s job is to help you break bad habits, so you can instead learn how to do things the correct way. In order for them to do this, they’ll need to tell you what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong.

Remember: this is a natural part of the process. Everyone needs to go through it. Even they started somewhere and received the same types of critiques they’re now giving you. This type of support is essential for keeping you on the right track and giving you the proper skills to succeed!

If you truly want to know how to become a makeup artist, don’t you want to push yourself to be the best you can be?

The Consequences of Rejecting Constructive Criticism

If you’re making mistakes, it’s EXTREMELY important that you’re aware of it. More importantly, it’s critical that you understand why and what specifically you’re doing wrong. Only then can you improve and move forward with the intent of correcting your errors the next time.

Think of it this way: you wouldn’t walk into a professional restaurant and insist on cooking a meal if you didn’t know how to cook. The logic is the same for makeup artistry.

Simply put: if you continue doing the wrong thing over and over again, you will struggle to become a makeup artist. You will never learn properly and your reputation will take a massive hit.

Speaking from personal experience, the constructive criticism you’ll receive from your QC Makeup Academy tutor is going to be invaluable! Nathan Johnson has given me plenty of honest and straightforward responses to my work. He’s honestly the best!

No, your tutor is not always going to stroke your ego. But they WILL provide every last bit of feedback with kindness and knowledge. And as we all know, knowledge is the power to succeed. The critiques you receive during your training are only said with love. They’re meant to steer you in the right direction; pinpointing step-by-step what’s working, what isn’t, and how to achieve the best result.

Personally, my feedback has given me the motivation to become way more attentive to detail. I couldn’t be more grateful for it!

Constructive Criticism in the QC Virtual Classroom

This is a great way to get many different eyes looking at your work. It’s also the perfect chance to get you used to receiving constructive feedback, so you’ll be better prepared for the working world. I love that QC makes this sort of environment available to us!

In the Virtual Classroom, students and graduates are encouraged to share photos of their work. Then other students, alumni, and tutors (I’m looking at you, Nathan) can see your work and examine it. They’ll regularly congratulate what you’ve done well, as well as suggest beneficial ways the look can be improved upon in the future.

Being a part of QC Makeup Academy’s Virtual Classroom on Facebook provides a great opportunity to see how constructive criticism is offered to students. This group also demonstrates real-life examples of constructive criticism being given and received in a healthy, positive way.

Tips for Giving Productive Feedback

  1. Back up your critiques. Don’t just tell someone what they are doing wrong. Rather, explain which technique appears to be incorrect and why.
  2. Be helpful. If you’re pointing out what could have been done better, take the extra minute to explain how the individual can better that technique next time.
  3. Please use tact. There is no room for nastiness in constructive criticism. If you can’t phrase your feedback in a positive way, keep it to yourself.
  4. Make sure you are qualified to make that judgement call. If it’s not your area of expertise, or you are struggling yourself, it’s probably not your place to comment.
  5. Always be kind and respectful. Consider the kind of constructive criticism YOU would prefer to hear. If it would hurt your own feelings, it could very well hurt someone else’s. Getting critiqued can make people feel vulnerable. Delivering feedback in a way that makes them understand without taking offense isn’t always easy. So, it’s important to be mindful of the things you say and how you say them.

How to Become a Makeup Artist: Tips for Taking Productive Feedback

  1. Don’t get defensive. Constructive criticism isn’t meant to be an attack, so don’t treat it as such. In the professional industry, the way you respond to critiques can make or break your career. You’ll need a thick skin. Just try to remember that it’s coming from a good place and not meant to hurt you.
  2. Really listen to what’s being said. Not ALL critiques will be correct, but many of them will be. So, don’t shrug them off. Even if you initially disagree, take the time to really absorb the feedback. Try to view things objectively. As we discussed before, you’re never going to know everything. Sometimes, the only way to truly get better is by first acknowledging this.

What It’s Like To Be a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador

By About the School, Student Ambassador No Comments

Nadia Calabro is a graduate of QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Skincare Course. Today, she reveals what it’s like to be a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy!

woman giving thumbs up

What is a Student Ambassador?

In a nutshell, a Student Ambassador is a student or alumnus that has been chosen to represent their school. They will often act as the ‘middle person’; bridging any gaps between current/prospective students and the institution itself. A Student Ambassador will also be there to help answer questions, share their own experience, and help promote the school to others.

Being chosen as a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy is both a privilege and a rewarding job. When you’re selected for this role, you are being entrusted with the responsibility of upholding the school’s reputation, its brand, and its message. You become the face behind the name, thereby bringing the school come to life and making it all the more relatable to other people.

Why I Wanted to Become a Student Ambassador

When I saw that QC Makeup Academy had launched its very own Student Ambassador program, I knew right away that I wanted in! It’s no secret that I’m completely in love with QC’s makeup certification courses. I’m even more in love with the amazing community that has been built around this school.

Personally, I’ve learned so much through my studies at QC. My experience with the staff, students, and the training itself was all incredible. I wanted to use this platform as a way to share my experience with everyone! As a Student Ambassador, I knew I’d be able to connect with my fellow students (as well as potential students) in a meaningful way. I’d be part of a safe place where students – and even staff – could go for advice, support, and encouragement.

Perks of Being a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador

Joining the Affiliate Program

Once QC Makeup Academy selects you to become a Student Ambassador, you will automatically be approved for their Affiliate Program. Perhaps you’ve heard this term before, but never quite understood what it really meant. Basically, though, it means this:

The Affiliate Program gives you the opportunity to earn money through your own website and social media platforms. You sign up for the program through QC’s website. Once approved, you’re provided with your very own Affiliate link. From there, all you need to do is choose a banner and then add it to your website and/or social media pages.

Once this done, QC does the rest of the work for you! If someone follows your Affiliate link and then chooses to enroll with QC sometime within 90 days after that, you’ll earn a $50 commission! QC monitors the referrals themselves and pays you for them – so you can quite literally set it and forget it.

It’s one of the easiest ways to make a bit of extra money. Plus, becoming an Affiliate member also designates you as being a partner of one of the world’s largest online makeup schools! Being a part of this program helps both you and QC Makeup Academy by generating more traffic to your website, while also promoting and advertising the school.

It’s a win-win for everyone!

Desk with Computer and Makeup Tools

Creating Original Content

As a Student Ambassador, there will be another way for you to make money. Every month, QC will assign you your very own content creation project! These projects typically require you to write a blog article or film a YouTube video.

Once QC has received your final product and approves it for publishing, you’re then compensated for your work. While most of your projects will be created for the purpose of being published on one of QC’s platforms, this isn’t always the case.

One specific perk of being an Ambassador is that QC Makeup Academy is dedicated to helping you grow your own original business content, too. For instance, if you want to add a blog to your website, they’ll specifically give you projects here and there that are meant to be published on YOUR platform. The same goes with YouTube videos, IGTV videos, etc.

No Experience? No Problem!

The idea of writing blogs and/or filming videos might seem intimidating – especially if you have no prior experience.

But don’t let this deter you! For starters, you have the freedom to choose if you’d prefer one type of project over another. If you love writing and have no interest in making videos, for instance, simply let QC know this and they’ll only assign you writing projects.

Furthermore, prior experience is NOT mandatory. Some of QC’s current Student Ambassadors were completely new to blog writing and video making, too. QC’s team makes sure to provide you with ample resources to guide you onto the right path, strengthen your writing and video skills, etc. Plus, whenever you’re assigned a project, you’re given a thorough PDF breakdown containing everything you need to know, abide by, and keep in mind for that particular project.

These content creation projects are an amazing opportunity to gain free knowledge, and refine your writing and vlogging skills. You can easily use these skills in your own business – or any job you’re applying to, for that matter!

Woman applying makeup on camera

Building Your Skill-Set

When you create the content creation projects mentioned above, there are many other skills you’ll develop along the way. These skills will not only be directly applicable throughout your career – they’ll set you up for even more success in the long run!

Firstly, your content creation projects will make you more organized and better capable of planning out strategies. As a Student Ambassador, your ideas and work must be properly thought-out, from Point A to Point Z. This is the only way to guarantee the success of your project.

Putting in minimal effort simply won’t cut it. So, you push yourself to always do the best you possibly can. By adopting this mentality early on, you’re setting the standard within yourself for your future career as a makeup artist. My Personal Experience as a QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador

Being a Student Ambassador has been such a great experience for me! I’ve learned so much that I’m confident will help me in my career as a makeup artist and beauty expert. For instance, I’d always wanted to start my own blog, but I didn’t know where or how to do this.

Then I became an Ambassador for QC. Their support and guidance, combined with the experience I’ve been gaining, has given me the confidence to finally build my own business blog!

I also never used to feel comfortable or confident enough to show the person behind the screen. But as an Ambassador, I’ve pushed myself to film videos for my own business, just as a way to practice for the videos I’d be tasked to do for QC Makeup Academy.

Well, guess what? These videos I created for my business have since attracted a LOT more network connections and clientele to me!

Being an ambassador has given me a different voice in QC’s Virtual Classroom on Facebook as well. People now come to me and listen to my advice and experiences, because they can trust that I will be totally open and honest with them. The lessons I have been taught through QC will always be my favorite. I know they will take me to many great places, both personally and professionally.

How to Become a Student Ambassador

Now that I have spiked your curiosity, here’s how to actually become a QC Student Ambassador…

  • Complete at least half of your QC course, or be a graduate.
  • Maintain an average of B+ or higher in your course.
  • Head here and read over the Student Ambassador guidelines.
  • Submit your application.
  • From there, the QC Student Ambassador Program Manager, Sarah Seguin, will contact you. If all looks well with the application, you will be invited to have a virtual interview.
  • Following this virtual interview, you’ll be required to submit a writing and/or video sample for review.
  • Once all the steps have been completed, you’ll be notified within 24-48 hours and told whether you’re being offered the position.

If you’re now ready to submit your Student Ambassador application, I wish you the best of luck. Maybe we’ll get to work together someday! 💕

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I’m a thirty-something happy wife, and a blessed mommy of a little princess. Over the last 11 years, my entire work history has been in the beauty industry, ever since I first earned my cosmetology license.

Before we moved to Oregon, I even owned my own beauty salon in California. I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. For me, beauty has always been a part of that art. Hair, nails, makeup – you name it!

You have years of experience and training in cosmetology. Why did you decide to pursue additional training in order to become a professional makeup artist?

Even with all of my education from cosmetology school, I felt I was never taught enough about makeup. I’d learned all about sanitation and the very basics of makeup application, but I wanted to learn more! I wanted makeup classes that would teach me how to put products together with precision and proper technique, and how to make them stay put on a client’s skin.

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and mortar school?

Originally, I chose online makeup classes because at the time, I lived very far any brick-and-mortar option. That turned out to be a perfect choice because I found out soon after that we’d be welcoming our little girl into the world! I really appreciated the flexibility of online learning and the option to complete makeup classes on my own schedule.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

To be honest, I shopped around a lot in my quest to find the perfect school. When I discovered QC Makeup Academy, some of the top reasons that influenced my decision to enroll were:

  • The affordable payment options;
  • The many different courses to choose from;
  • And the chance to be tutored by celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson.

I’m not sure it gets much better than that! I just knew the quality of the education was going to be what I needed.

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience  with this program, and how would you say it helped you grow as a makeup artist?

My experience with the Master Makeup Artistry Course was fabulous! Even when I came to units that taught skills I never thought I’d be able to learn, they were presented in such a way that I was able to easily understand them. I could learn how to practice them properly, until I got it right.

Sometimes, with online courses, you might be doing something wrong and never even know it. But with QC’s classes, you’re able to get feedback and critiques from your tutor right away, after each unit is submitted. That was invaluable to me!

You’ve also graduated from QC’s Virtual Makeup mini course. Why do you feel that this additional skill-set will make your makeup career even more successful, especially  during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Since most of my freelance makeup work is for brides and fashion photographers, everything on my books was cancelled when the pandemic began. When I saw that QC Makeup Academy offered a Virtual Makeup Training Course, I knew I needed that education.

I didn’t have any clue how to provide a virtual service! But now I do. Even once things pick back up again in my area, I’ll continue to offer virtual services as part of my business. Virtual services allow for an even wider reach of potential clients, and it’s a very manageable thing for me to offer from home!

You’re currently working on completing the Skincare Course. In your opinion, why should makeup artists have proper skincare knowledge?

It’s important to have a good knowledge of the canvas you’re working with, in order to be able to choose the best products. For example, I work with a lot of photographers. During a photoshoot, the elements can be very different and with hot, harsh lights.

I need to know how a model’s skin is going to react to every product I put on her. This way, the makeup stays on her skin throughout the entire shoot. It won’t get oily or shiny from all of the heat.

How useful have the various materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been for your QC Makeup Academy courses?

Everything has been extremely helpful! I still have my books in a small library in my home office. I’ll often refer back to them if I feel a bit rusty on a topic. The assignments also really helped to get me out of my “comfort zone”.

They challenged me to try things I hadn’t done, and I really enjoyed that. And, of course, we already know how much I appreciated having tutor feedback so quickly after each unit. It was like having someone right next to me to help!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup classes?

Consistency and blending have to be two of the most important things I’ve learned from makeup classes. I had no idea how much they would affect every single makeup look I would ever try to apply!

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s  the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC Makeup Academy?

I want all aspiring makeup artists to know that they have a chance to get a great education, no matter their schedule or situation! The makeup and beauty courses offered at QC Makeup Academy are perfect for everyone.

From busy mamas who want a career with flexibility, to high school students who want to pursue a career in a field they’re passionate about. From the retiree who dreams of learning something new and creative, to the seasoned cosmetologist who still has more to learn!

These makeup classes are for everyone and provide amazing education opportunities.

How has your career as a beauty professional been affected by COVID-19? In what ways have you adjusted to this ‘new normal’?

When the pandemic hit, I lost most of my bookings for weddings and fashion photoshoots almost instantly. Some of the brides have simply pushed their wedding dates another year out, but so many just cancelled altogether.

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do. But since then, I’ve started using my knowledge and live demonstration of skills to continue earning an income virtually. It even pushed me to get outside of my comfort zone and start working closely with a beauty brand, to help generate online sales.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

Ideally, I would love to build a brand that my daughter could step into and take over when (and if) she wants to. I also align that with another goal of creating a flexible career for myself that allows me to spend quality family time with her and my husband.

What is your #1 piece of advice that you’d like to give to aspiring makeup artists who are thinking of pursuing a professional career in this field in 2021?

I’d like to simply tell aspiring artists that this is a perfect time to start!

There are so many opportunities right now for you to build the makeup career you truly want. Get creative with it. Let QC Makeup Academy give you all of the tools and provide the education to be successful in whatever you want your dream career to be!

QC Makeup Academy Student Ambassador, Luzaan De Bruyn, feature image

Ambassador Feature: Luzaan de Bruyn

By Graduate Feature, Student Ambassador No Comments

e

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi there! My name is Luzaan, and I am a mother of three beautifully naughty children. I was born in South Africa but have been residing in New Zealand for four years now. I am also graduate (and current student) of the AMAZING QC Makeup Academy!

Fun fact about me: I continually have to study because if I don’t, I get depressed. This has resulted in me having more than 9 qualifications – and I’ve only been speaking English for 4 years now!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

As a child, I never felt like I belonged anywhere. This resulted in chronic Major Depressive Disorder. I followed one career after the other; always yearning for more, yearning to belong, and yearning to find my passion.

It wasn’t until I accidentally stumbled upon QC Makeup Academy and their online makeup classes that I felt a strong sense of belonging and passion. I immediately knew that being a professional makeup artist is what I am supposed to be doing with my life!

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and-mortar school? Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

To be completely raw and honest, I was skeptical at first. At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about skincare, makeup, or the beauty industry in general. I found it hard to believe that you could learn everything you needed to become a successful, working professional – entirely online.

I researched QC Makeup Academy and their online makeup courses day and night for more than a week before I took the “leap of faith” and enrolled. Thinking back, it was the scariest decision I ever made. But now, it’s the BEST decision I’ve ever made!

My personal reasons for pursuing my makeup training online include:

  • As a mother, I need to be able to study at my own pace and in the comfort of my own home. This was very important to me.
  • QC Makeup Academy gives you 2 years to complete a course, which was a huge selling point for me.
  • They are an internationally-recognized, accredited school. On its own, this speaks volumes.
  • QC is more than just a school – it’s like its own little family. The staff, tutors, and access to the Virtual Classroom on Facebook all provide you with the kind of support that only a true makeup family can give.
  • A lot of QC’s programs will provide you with a free makeup kit as part of the course materials. This ensures that you can jump straight in without worrying about having to first build your kit before you can start the course.

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program, and how would you say it helped you grow as an MUA?

Oh, goodness – if only you could see what my makeup skills were like before I enrolled in the MMA Course. Let’s just say, they were NON-EXISTENT!

As soon as I received my enrollment details, I immediately jumped into the course. Boy, was I left in complete amazement! The beautifully-made, interactive videos explain every single ‘why’, ‘why not’, and ‘how to’ you could possibly think of. Not to mention, the hands-on assignments are absolutely astonishing!

The magnificent, legendary Nathan Johnson was my tutor during my course. He left me in awe! His feedback constantly pushed me when I needed it. He was honest, raw, and most importantly, real. Being tutored by one of the most amazing celebrity makeup artists in the business was something no brick-and-mortar school could ever replace.

Before my professional training, I was a mother who applied her foundation with her hands, didn’t know blending existed, and thought eyeshadow should be tapped on. Thanks to QC Makeup Academy, I finished my training a professional master makeup artist. I am now is a freelancer who is well-known in our community.

I’ll ALWAYS be forever grateful to QC, their online makeup courses, and Nathan Johnson!

You’ve also graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop and Special FX Makeup Course. Why do you feel these additional qualifications are beneficial to your career, and how have you incorporated them into your business services?

The Airbrush Makeup Workshop was extremely important to me because I wanted to be able to offer my clients the choice between hand-applied and airbrushed makeup services. I wanted to be a flexible artist; able to provide my brides with different options.  especially seeing as I am the only certified Airbrush makeup artist in my area.

QC Makeup Academy’s airbrush training opened doors which I never knew existed. In fact, now that I have this specialized skill, I’m actually the only certified airbrush MUA in my area!

Soon after completing that program, I decided after to enroll in the Special FX Makeup Course as well, due to my fascination for Halloween and all things gory. Since becoming an International Special FX Makeup Professional, I have been able to offer Halloween SFX makeup to many clients. I’ve also been contracted as the primary SFX artist for a special effects makeup magazine, as well as a medical magazine.

You’re currently working on completing the Virtual Makeup Training mini course. Why do you feel that being able to provide virtual services to clients is so valuable, especially during a global pandemic?

Being able to offer my services during a global pandemic is truly invaluable. COVID-19 has caused a financial loss for so many people. Sadly, there are countless professions that can no longer sustain themselves, since they rely solely on in-person services.

As a makeup artist, being able to offer virtual services as part of my business allows me to open a completely different door and utilize different opportunities. Even looking beyond the pandemic, we live in a day and age where people prefer doing things digitally. The rush of life lately doesn’t always allow people to take time out of their day to attend in-person appointments. Businesses need to be able to adapt to this and offer alternate solutions and services.

I’m now able to offer virtual makeup services in the comfort of my client’s home, at a time they prefer. A complete lockdown won’t affect my service. This wouldn’t have been the case without my virtual makeup training from QC Makeup Academy!

How useful have the various materials, assignments, and tutor feedback been for your courses with QC Makeup Academy?

Where do I start? Let me just say, QC Makeup Academy is – hands-down – the best of the best!

The materials alone are so invaluable. I truly don’t believe I would have become half the makeup artist I am today without my course materials. Although they were informative, they were never overwhelming. Even though English isn’t my first language, and I only started learning English 4 years ago, I still found the texts and videos easy to understand.

Even now, I still regularly go through my materials to ensure I always stay on top of every and any situation I find myself in. The assignments you’re given are really hands-on, and presented in a way that betters you as both a makeup artist and a person. Personally, I enjoyed every single minute of every single assignment!

Nathan Johnson has been my tutor in every course so far. He is such an incredible human being, mentor, and makeup artist. His feedback has pushed me to better my skills, to keep learning, and to keep growing. Nathan truly is the salt of this earth!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup classes?

This question actually made me chuckle because I heard Nathan’s voice in my head as soon as I read it. Practice, practice, practice! Makeup is an art that can only be achieved by practice.

You’ve recently joined QC Makeup Academy’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want aspiring makeup artists to know about QC?

QC Makeup Academy goes beyond simply teaching you what you need to know. Through the friendships I’ve made with my fellow peers, I’ve gained a family I never knew I needed. Taking that leap of faith and enrolling in QC’s online makeup courses was the best decision I ever made. Now it’s your turn to make the best decision of your life!

How has your career as a makeup artist been affected by COVID-19? In what ways have you adjusted to this ‘new normal’?

When the pandemic reached us, my freelance makeup career was still pretty new. I had bookings that got cancelled (understandably). My three-year-old is immunocompromised, so it was incredibly important to keep her safe. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, I tested positive for COVID-19 and had to indefinitely postpone the little bookings I had left.

Fortunately, after 28 days of being sick, I tested negative and was able to be released from home isolation. It was then that I decided to offer virtual tips and tricks to my clients, family, and friends. Not long after, I got flooded with virtual bookings – and I’ve been busy ever since! I still freelance and often go to clients directly. Only now, I wear a mask and ensure that my clients are 100% healthy before accepting a booking.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I thought long and hard about my answers for this question. Then I realized that my biggest top goal is to keep growing with QC Makeup Academy! My passion for the beauty industry and for QC is what drives me. My only wish is to be a makeup artist that makes QC Makeup Academy proud!

(Oh, and I also want to work in the film industry eventually!)

In your opinion, what is the secret to success as a makeup artist?

Never ever stop learning. The makeup industry is continually evolving and you can never be too good to learn. Reach for the top because that is what you deserve!

Makeup Artistry for Mature Skin 101

By Education, Student Ambassador No Comments

Cheri Stevens is a Student Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. She is currently enrolled in the Master Makeup Artistry Course.

Hello to you all and happy 2021! Let’s kick off the New Year by discussing a topic that you don’t hear (or see) a lot about in social media: makeup for mature skin.

Makeup artistry is a fantastic tool for those who want to improve their skills or begin a professional career as a beauty expert. But I’ve noticed that very little is out there – especially in mainstream media – for those of us who have mature skin.

Since I fall into this category, I figured, who best to delve into this topic but me?

What is “Mature Skin”?

Contrary to popular belief, mature skin isn’t a skin type. It also isn’t synonymous with older age, although it typically tends to be linked with those people over the age of 35. That being said, younger people can also shown characteristics of mature skin, too.

Quite simply, mature skin is skin that’s ‘older’. In addition to age, skin can grow older for a number of reasons, such as:

  • Genetic conditions, such as acne or rosacea;
  • Living outdoors / regular exposure to sunlight;
  • Wearing little to no sunscreen on a regular basis;
  • Lifestyle habits, such as smoking;
  • Repeated facial expressions;
  • And much more!

Signs of mature skin can include fine lines/wrinkles, loss of tone, and decreased elasticity. Mature skin is often drier, too, since the skin becomes less capable of producing as many natural oils and renewed skin cells.

My Interest in Makeup Artistry for Makeup Skin

Over the years, I have become more and more interested in topics relating to mature skin – particularly because I’ve notice that there is little representation for it in the media. Of course, this isn’t true for all beauty companies. But it certainly is the case that the majority of them don’t typically show images of real mature women (or men) wearing beautiful makeup looks.

It’s shocking to me to think that us mature individuals are not shown as being beautiful. In many cases, products are not even suggested for us. Unfortunately, people with mature skin don’t seem to fall within the target audience of most beauty brands.

This is why I want to be a catalyst for this particular genre and speak to the many merits of makeup artistry for OUR skin!

before and after makeup on mature model's skin

The Importance of Makeup Artistry Training

It is EXTREMELY important for older women (and men) to know how to properly apply makeup on themselves, so as not to look overdone or washed out. There is such a thing as too much for mature skin. At the same time, though, not using enough product or color can easily lead to the skin, lips, and eyes look pale and drab.

It’s all about maintaining that fine balance – and only by getting properly trained in makeup artistry can one know where that balance is.

In my opinion, every makeup artist should be professionally trained. This is the only real way to learn how to apply makeup to mature skin, and not just makeup for the young and wrinkle-free. On top of that, by adding this knowledge to your skill-set, you can also open the door to even more potential career paths.

For example, a foundation in makeup artistry for mature skin can be beneficial for TV and movie makeup, as well as editorial work that features older models. You never know who your next client may be! A mature bride, for example, will need an MUA who knows how to work with her skin – not the skin of someone 20 years her junior.

These skills are challenging to master. They need to be honed properly in order to be a truly knowledgeable makeup artist.

The Complexities of Makeup for Mature Skin

There are different rules when it comes to applying makeup to mature skin. Working with mature skin is NOT the same as working with younger skin. For instance, a knowledgeable makeup artist would not use a lot of powder on mature skin, since it has a tendency to be on the drier side.

Another rule of thumb is to use a lighter hand with color as well. Those Instagram eyebrows you’ve seen on social media? They don’t work here. Mature skin can have fading brows, but a light touch is key!

Yes, there are challenges to mature skin. But consulting with your client first, as well as recognizing your own strengths and areas of improvement, can get you on the right path.

makeup artistry applying makeup to older woman's face

Some questions to ask yourself when working with a client who has mature skin include:

  • What is their skin tone?
  • Are their eyes hooded?
  • How dry is their skin?
  • Do they have any fine lines / wrinkles? If so, where are they on the face?
  • What is the purpose of this look? Is it for a special event, such as a wedding or birthday party? Is it for an editorial ad campaign? Is it for film or television?

For example, if your client has a lighter skin tone, you might want to add a bit more color to their skin with blushes. In the event that they have hooded eyes, you might need a different approach to their eyeshadow application. If the mature skin is dry, using moisturizing foundations containing SPF protection would be the smartest choice.

Knowing the answers to all of these questions first will help you make your client’s mature skin look radiant – while not appearing overdone!

My Makeup Artistry Goals

My personal goal as a makeup artist is to try to get the message out there for beauty companies and advertisers alike and push them to promote more beautiful women and men who have mature skin. Fashion magazines and retailers need to realize that they are missing out on a huge market of potential buyers by neglecting representation for this demographic.

After all, mature individuals like to look beautiful as well! While young people absolutely deserve to look their best, mature individuals have to go the extra mile just to be seen – let alone have their needs met. This deserves to be addressed. I do my makeup every day, no matter what. But the techniques used are not the same ones that I used in my 20s (or even and 30s). It would never fit or look natural.

Learning Makeup Artistry with QC Makeup Academy

QC Makeup Academy actually addresses this issue in their courses. As someone who is currently taking their Master Makeup Artistry Course, I can say first-hand that QC’s training is VERY informative. This school has made my education in makeup artistry for mature skin so fantastic!

I have advanced with new skills and gained so much knowledge and information. My professional training has completely transformed not only the way I do my own makeup – but the makeup I do on other mature individuals as well! You don’t need a full face of heavy makeup to look your best. QC Makeup Academy teaches you everything you need to know in order to be true makeup expert!

I would strongly advise you to look into QC Makeup Academy – and especially their Master Makeup Artistry Course – if you want to get the expert knowledge that I have received and learn the steps to achieving amazing results with mature skin. The content is rich with information and offered right at your fingertips!

In this age of the global pandemic, why go to a brick-and-mortar school when the option’s there to work right from the comfort of your own home? QC’s flexible schooling allows you to learn at you own pace and keep safe at the same time! This is a school that is worth the investment!

My Top 5 Tips for Applying Makeup to Mature Skin

1 – Use creamier formulations whenever you can!

Common examples would be creamier foundations and blushes. Powders can settle in fine lines and wrinkles, which will make your client’s skin appear drier.

2 – Don’t skip the blush!

A good blush can give color to skin that may have lost some of its natural flush. As an added tip, cream blushes work best for achieving this desired result!

3 – Avoid heavy black eyeliner!

I don’t personally like to use heavy black eyeliner on mature skin. It tends to look harsh and unnatural. Instead, try a powder shadow pressed into the upper lash line in a soft color, such as brown.

4 – Fill in those brows!

As we age, we have a tendency to lose some density in our eyebrows. This results in a less framed face. Brows are a defining feature to your client’s face, so make sure to embrace them. Use hair-like strokes in a natural, soft shade in order to bring them back to life!

Pro Tip: Want to work on your hair-like strokes and perfect your eyebrow game? Check out my fellow Ambassador Amanda’s video tutorial here!

5 – Stay away from heavy contour and shading!

As we age, we sometimes can begin to look a little less plump. If applying heavy contour (which carves the cheekbones out), a person with mature skin can wind up looking gaunt and hollow. Nobody wants that, so keep those gorgeous cheeks plump!

The Makeup Artist Salary: What to Expect in 2021

By Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Thinking of becoming a professional MUA in 2021, but want to know what sort of makeup artist salary you can expect?

QC Student Ambassador and alumnus, Nadia Calabro, is here to tell you what salary projections look like for the upcoming year – as well as 7 factors that could affect your income!

New Year, New Start

2021 is finally upon us, and I cannot be alone in saying, good riddance to 2020! Last year was challenging in so many aspects! The last time we made a blog post like this, we were predicting 2020’s makeup artist salary. But at that time, no one could’ve guessed that a global pandemic was about to strike.

COVID-19 certainly had a profound impact on the world of professional makeup artists. Business practices that we had been accustomed to for so long were suddenly pulled from under our feet. Thanks to social distancing, we were forced to adapt to a new way of working – or face the prospect of losing everything!

At first, it seemed like the worst possible thing that could have happened. It was easy to become discouraged. Many of us considered that perhaps there was no point in continuing on in what seemed like a predominantly hands-on industry. But once we all took a step back and reevaluated, we realized that this situation was actually a strange kind of blessing.

makeup artist wearing face mask and applying makeup to female client

Turning a Negative Situation into a Positive One

The time off many of us suddenly had provided the chance for us to build a new mindset and a stronger game plan. We’ve been able to do more in-depth research into our industry and competitors and gain the tools we need to grow in our communities. We got the opportunity to put more focus in the education behind our business; taking new courses and furthering our training in order to enhance our skills and offer new things to our clients.

On top of all that, we’ve learned how to carry our business through an unprecedented time. For many of us, this has given us the confidence to believe that we can take our business anywhere! Everything that we learned throughout 2020 laid down the stepping stones and support to help us subsequently make it through 2021 in a much more successful way.

Even if COVID-19 does stick around for the unforeseeable future, it no longer needs to hurt our careers!

The Makeup Artist Salary in 2021

If you’re thinking about becoming a working MUA this year, chances are one of the top questions on your mind is: “What sort of makeup artist salary can I expect to make in 2021, with the pandemic still going on?”

It’s important to say here and now that there is no cut-and-dry answer to this question. The most I can offer are projections, based on current numbers. The future is uncertain, and there’s always the chance that the makeup artist salary in 2021 can be higher or lower than what’s currently predicted.

Not to mention, it’s difficult to nail down the makeup artist’s salary in general. This has been the case long before the pandemic began. For example, two artists living in the same area can find themselves making completely different yearly salaries!

This is a profession where there are a LOT of additional factors that can influence and determine how much you can make as a professional makeup artist. So, let’s take a look at 7 of the most common ones!

1. Location

Every country has an average makeup artist salary range per year. That average also tends to varies within the different parts of the country itself. For reference, here is a general breakdown of the average makeup artists salary from a few different parts of the world…

  • Canada: Average of approx. $42,278 CAD annually
  • United States: Average of approx. $47,917 USD annually
  • United Kingdom: Average of approx. £20,000 GBP annually
  • New Zealand: Average of approx. $38,800 NZD annually
  • Australia: Average of approx. $52,650 AUD annually

It’s important to also remember that this is a general breakdown of the country. Whereabouts you are living within the country will also make a difference in your makeup artist salary. For instance, people living and/or working in major cities in these countries can – and often will – charge more for their services than MUAs in smaller towns. Therefore, makeup artists residing in larger cities often land on the higher end of the salary scale.

2. Training

In today’s world, most people feel they don’t need to pay to get properly certified in any area of their industry. This is especially true for aspiring makeup artists. With easy access to online makeup tutorials, most people think that with enough practice, they can learn enough to become a working professionals.

Now, while this is very possible, most don’t realize that just because you can mimic a look does NOT mean you have a legitimate skill-set. Without properly learning the foundation, techniques, and theories involved in makeup artistry, you’ll only ever be left with the ability to copy other people. You’ll never be able to create authentic, original work that is both technically correct and foundationally sound.

Without professional training, you lack an understanding of the basic concepts and makeup techniques needed to truly succeed. A proper makeup education will allow you to take on any job since you’ll have the knowledge and training necessary to accomplish whatever your client is asking for!

makeup brushes in container on table

3. Services Offered (or Not Offered)

As makeup artists, we can all find our very own niche. Our niche can be used to our advantage, in order to make our services all the more unique. This can potentially attract more clientele, which means a higher makeup artist salary.

This goes hand-in-hand with having professional training. The more training you have, the more areas of makeup you know!

That being said, while it’s important to find that part of ourselves, it’s also important to remember that our niche is not the be-all and end-all of our capabilities. Rather, a niche is an area that we have passion and excel in – but it’s not the only thing we can do!

If we only offer one area of service, we’re limited to how much income we can make. Take bridal makeup, for example. This can be a very lucrative area of business – but it also has its slower times of the year. If you only offer bridal makeup services, then during the quiet seasons, you won’t bring in nearly as much of an income.

The more you offer, the more you’ll be noticed. This, in turn, means a better bottom line for your business!

4. Your Target Audience

With every niche comes a target audience. After all, not every style or area of makeup is for everyone. When you determine your niche, you must also determine who the people are that will be looking for an artist like you. Once you’ve determined your target audience, you’ll need to find a way to grab their attention. So, make sure you’re advertising your business in ways that they’ll appreciate – and most of all, notice.

5. Your Business Name, Brand, Portfolio, and Website

Use all of these things to tell the story of who you are and where you see your business going. They’re meant to sell you to your audience! The stronger the sales pitch, the more clients you’ll be sure to book… which means a larger makeup artist salary!

Begin by picking a business name for yourself. This name has to be catchy, unique, and clearly identify what you offer. Next, pick a brand that identifies the services you offer, as well as your sense of style! After that, make sure that your professional portfolio and website are established, easy to find in an online search, and display everything you want your clients to see.

There are so many things that go into establishing and running a successful business! There are a few things you will need right away when first starting out.

6. Social Media Presence

Plus, there are TONS of ways you can maximize your social media game to help increase your makeup artist salary. Keep reading here to learn more!

A strong social media presence is ALWAYS critical for maintaining a solid business. By keeping active online, even during slower times when you’re not getting as many bookings, you can continue to increase your exposure and build an even stronger reputation for your company.

We live in a technological world. Everything we do revolves around social media! If you want to be known, get on social media ASAP! Build a profile that’s appealing to the eyes and shows off your style. Use all the appropriate and relevant hashtags, and add and interact with other people in your field. Most importantly, post something every day so your page is always relevant!

7. Be Different Than the Rest

Your only limitation is your imagination, so don’t be afraid to get creative!

Offer workshops to teach people how to do their own makeup. Provide virtual services and consultations for those who can’t (or don’t want to) meet in person during the pandemic.

Do and offer things that make you stand out from the rest. Depending on where you live, there might very well be a makeup artist on every corner. Obviously, your skills, work ethic, and results will make people choose you over someone else. But it’s always a good idea to make your business stand out in other ways, too.

How to Increase Your Makeup Artist Salary in 2021

Right now, it’s still difficult for a lot of us to get in-person work. Many of us took a financial during the dreaded 2020. So, how can we make this year different and increase our income?

1. Get Professionally Trained!

If you’ve been working as a makeup artist thus far, without professional training, then there’s no better time than the present to change that. Getting professionally trained is a guaranteed way to enhance your skills, teach you new ones, and give you a certification behind your name that clients will trust!

2. Add to Your Qualifications!

Most of us still have a lot of extra time on our hands. If you’ve been thinking about taking a new course, now is the time to jump on it! You can never learn too much. With more education comes more expertise. This enables you to offer more services, and you can even charge more for your existing services, since you’ll have advanced training under your belt.

3. Develop a Specialization!

Specializing in a particular area allows you to grow and develop unmatched skills – perhaps ones that your competition does not have. This will impress clients and allow you to charge more for that unique service!

Being good at many different areas of makeup can lead to a bunch of different career paths. But if you also have a specialization in an area that you positively excel in, you’ll be able to open doors you’ve never even imagined before!

4. Adapt Your Business Online!

Interested in taking your business online but not sure where to start? Check out QC Makeup Academy’s Virtual Makeup Training mini-course!

In order to survive this trying time, we must find a new way to connect and supplement our makeup artist salary!

In the age of social distancing, i’s time to transform your business into a virtual one. This might seem impossible in our line of work, but I promise you, it is not. As I mentioned earlier, you can easily offer virtual consultations and services, as well as teach virtual classes and workshops.

5. Strengthen Your Online Presence and Marketing!

Use your downtime as an opportunity to learn more about effective marketing strategies, or to fix up your social media pages. Make sure that your page is speaking the same language as your business, and that it’s reaching the people you’re intending for it to. Even if you don’t have a large number of clients to post on your social media feed, find at least one thing related to your business to post each day. This will ensure that you’re still staying relevant and noticed!

6. Revisit Your Website and Portfolio!

So, take the time to go through what you have already posted. Make sure the pictures are of high quality, that information is current and correct, and that everything is a proper representation of who and what you are!

Being busy with clients is a blessing, but it sometimes leaves us neglecting other areas of our business. For example, it’s easy to forget that potential clients are still looking through our website and portfolio to see if we are the ones for them. If our website or portfolio images are out-of-date or of poor quality, this can turn a client away before you’ve even had the chance to speak with them!

7. Create a Client Retention Program!

Create a rewards program, a referral program, and/or a loyalty discount! Clients want to feel important and appreciated – not like they are just a number.

Right now, with the way the world is, there may not be a practical reason for your previous clients to come see you. This is why it’s imperative to come up with a strong client retention program that will ensure past clients WILL come back to you once they require your services again.

2020 is done and gone, and with that, better times are upon us!

Being able to adapt to any situation is a part of who were are as artists. Right now, we have to adapt to the world instead of the job. But there’s nothing we can’t do if we just put in the heart and work to do so.

Who would have thought that we would be living through the times we have? When we became makeup artists, we could have never known what the future would hold for us. Running a successful business is hard, even in the best of times. But with a changing world, things quickly get even more complicated.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hey guys and gals! I’m a 33-year-old mother of five. I live in Melbourne, Australia, and I just love makeup! I’m a qualified hairdresser and nail technician, and I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 10 years. I just love creating everything and anything! Aside from makeup, my other greatest love is for my family.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I fell in love with makeup while watching my mum do hers growing up. I was hypnotized by it! I think I was about 10 years old when my mum started letting me play with her makeup. After that, I never stopped!

I was also drawn to the special effects you see in movies and on TV. When I found out it was a form of makeup, I was sold on becoming a professional MUA.

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and-mortar school?

Honestly, face-to-face schooling from Monday to Friday just isn’t for me. I seem to lose my drive and passion in this kind of environment. Not to mention, because I’m a full-time mother of 5 young children, online schooling is the only way I could have gotten to where I am today.

I’m so thankful for the opportunity to learn makeup from the comfort of my own home and in my own time.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

When I found QC Makeup Academy, my eyes lit up!

I read all of the reviews and looked thoroughly into how the school operated. I was amazed at the dedication the tutors and staff put forward. Also, QC Makeup Academy was the only online school I could find that was accredited here in Australia. They offer everything you need to get started with your online classes and become a certified professional.

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program, and how would you say it helped you grow as an artist?

The Master Makeup Artistry Course is amazing! It taught me everything I know. I’m glad I started with this course, really. It gave me the knowledge and courage to get where I am today. Plus, it was the most amazing experience learning from my tutor, Nathan Johnson. He is so passionate and driven!

In what ways would you say the Pro Makeup Workshop built upon the knowledge learned in the MMA Course and refined your skill-set further?

The Pro Makeup Workshop took everything I learned in the Master Makeup Artistry Class and brought it to the next level! Nathan Johnson was my tutor for this course, too. He really helped me reach my potential by pushing me to think bigger than I was used to. All of the different assignments really get your creative thinking flowing.

You’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Special FX Makeup Course. Why do you want to add SFX training to your repertoire? How do you intend to incorporate this advanced training into your makeup career?

I’ve always loved blood and gore in horror movies. I dreamed of being able to create the things I’ve seen in my favorite horror movies. The Special FX Makeup Course is teaching me everything I need to know to pursue my ultimate goal, which is to have a successful career as an SFX makeup artist in film and TV.

How useful have QC Makeup Academy’s course materials and assignments been for your training? How valuable has the feedback been from your tutor, Nathan Johnson?

One of the many reasons I chose to take online classes with QC Makeup Academy was the number of amazing resources the school provides. You receive textbooks, DVDs, online videos, and even incredible makeup kits!

Nathan Johnson is hands-down the most amazing teacher! The feedback and support I receive from him drives me to be great! You know he loves and supports each and every one of his students. You can hear it in his beautiful voice!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup classes?

Patience!

Also, in this industry, you never stop learning. Thankfully, QC Makeup Academy has so many online classes to keep me learning for years to come.

“Trust the process” is one of my favorite sayings in makeup. You need to trust in yourself, your education, and that your client is going to love what you’ve created.

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want brand new students to know about QC Makeup Academy?

I’m so excited and thankful to be a Student Ambassador for QC Makeup Academy. I want brand-new students to know that the love and support they’ll receive at QC is above and beyond the best!

How has your career as a makeup artist been affected by COVID-19? In what ways have you adjusted to this ‘new normal’?

Thankfully, I haven’t been affected too badly. I’m more focused on my studies, rather than starting my business just yet. I want to learn as much as I can before I jump in. COVID-19 has been the best excuse to focus on studying and learning as much as possible.

What sort of services do you want to offer your future makeup clients?

I want to be able to provide as many services as possible to my future clients. That’s why I’ve taken (and will continue to take) so many courses with QC Makeup Academy.

I want to learn as much as I can, and would love to teach online masterclasses one day. It’d be great to go full circle and eventually teach others the procedures and techniques I’ve learned here at QC Makeup Academy

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

As I mentioned, I ultimately want to work in film and TV, or even the theater industry as an MUA. I love the idea of creating my interpretation of a character from a brief or the director/writer’s vision. I can’t wait for that day!

2020 has been a difficult year, but beauty professionals have found innovative ways to adjust to the new normal and continue providing their services. Are virtual services something you’re interested in offering clients? Why or why not?

Virtual services are the way of the future! I absolutely plan to add them to my business when I finally get started. I want to create my own online classes tutoring men and women in special effects makeup through Zoom or Skype. Additionally, I intend to write my own online procedure for clients to read and follow during virtual lessons.

With the way the world is today, it is SO important to be able to keep working any way we can!

Finally: in your opinion, what is the TRUE secret to success as a makeup artist?

Never stop learning and never give up. This industry is always growing, changing, adding, and adapting. We should be the same.

3 Ways to Learn How to Do Makeup if You Have No Experience

By Education, Makeup Tips and Tricks, Student Ambassador No Comments

Want to learn how to do makeup but don’t have any prior experience? Paula Alleyne is here to help! Why NOW Is the Perfect Time to Follow Your Dreams

How can we maximize our time during the pandemic? The onset of COVID-19 has caused many of us to rethink the way we conduct our lives, both personally and professionally. During this time, as makeup artists, it forces us to reflect on how we do business, how we interact with clients, how we protect ourselves, and the costs associated with doing business in the new normal.

I therefore encourage everyone to take this time to be reflective and improve for the better. Maybe you can use this opportunity to better your existing business. Perhaps you can maximize this time to learn how to do makeup. The important thing is that you use your time productively, so that you can continue pushing yourself forward.

In case you need some ideas, here a few ways you can make the best of a bad situation…

Hygiene and health care are of utmost importance.

If you’re an aspiring or established MUA with some experience under your belt, think of the practices that you had prior to the pandemic. Consider the ways in which you handled and sanitized your products and tools. Ask yourself: is there room for you to be doing better and keeping things cleaner?

Take this time to undo any bad practices you may have had before. Instead, dedicate yourself now to becoming a makeup artist with improved hygiene standards. By being as sanitized as possible at all times, your clients will feel (and be) safer.

Embrace online learning.

Prior to COVID-19, there was a pretty heavy debate regarding whether online making courses were just as beneficial as brick-and-mortar makeup schools. But since the pandemic started, everyone and everything has now moved to the online platform.

I have seen such an increase of makeup courses being offered virtually. Not only does it provide a way to continue learning in the comfort and safety of your own home, it’s proven to be just as effective as its in-person counterpart.

It’s important to understand, though, that online learning requires serious discipline. If you enroll in an online course assuming it’ll be easy, you’ll be in for a major awakening. We all have hectic lives, which is why many online makeup courses are self-paced. But with this freedom comes a certain level of responsibility on our end. Discipline is therefore required to ensure that you learn, complete assignments, and keep progressing.

Take advantage of “free” time.

Some of us may still be on lockdown. For those of us who aren’t, there are still major social distancing rules in effect. As such, a bunch of activities that required physical attendance are now rescheduled or cancelled.

This means that that extra time might suddenly turn into open availability within your schedule. Still, try to use it productively (at least once in a while)! Develop a new makeup technique, or strengthen areas where you may be weak. This is time that can also be used to review your business plans, finances, and budget for the future.

Time waits for no one. Every effort you can make counts!

3 Ways to Learn How to Do Makeup If You Have No Experience

1. Research it!

Look at blogs, read books or magazines, and watch videos. I realized I had an interest in makeup years ago, when I saw a makeup brochure from AVON. It had sketches of where to apply makeup products, such as blush, as well as ideas for eyeshadow application.

I asked my older sister questions about makeup. I looked at magazines and paid attention to how makeup was applied on models. Reading books like Face Forward by Kevyn Aucoin or Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual was also extremely eye-opening. I watched YouTube videos by makeup artists like Wayne Goss and Angie Di Battista, as well as videos on the history of makeup throughout various era and historical periods.

When it comes to makeup, there’s a whole world of information out there. A little research will go a VERY long way!

2. Practice it!

Practice on yourself and practice on others. After learning about makeup, I decided to start practicing it on myself. I attempted costume designs to go with the looks I was creating. I tried the smoky eye, red lips, nude lips – you name it!

I also began practicing on friends and family members. Applying your knowledge by working on other people’s faces is one of the single best ways to improve your skills and hone your craft. For me, these were times of trial and error. There were definitely mistakes made in the beginning – so, a big round of applause goes out to my sisters, my mother and my friends. They bore with me along the way, and put up with my technique when my hand was less than gentle.

The point is, eventually I got better! Even my sisters started to appreciate the torture of waiting in the chair while I finished. One big lesson I learned as I practiced was adjusting my facial expression. When working on clients, you need to know how to wear a good poker face. We’ve all had that experience when applying makeup; that internal freak-out when it seems like the look isn’t going as intended.

Over time, as I became familiar with different products and colors, I knew not to freak out. For the sake of your client, it’s important to always remain calm. Because at the end of the day, it is ALWAYS going to work out and be okay. It just might take a bit of patience.

3. Learn it professionally!

Being self-taught is great, but being trained by a legitimate expert is even better. There are tons of industry pros and instructors out there who are happy to offer their knowledge on makeup artistry. Learning with them and discovering the theory behind makeup application is wonderful. It gives you the confidence to form your own type of artistry, rather than simply relying on the replication of other people’s looks.

Why I Chose to Be Professionally Trained

I chose to be professionally trained because I started to notice a trend on social media regarding an increasingly popular type of makeup application. Much of the application did not reflect the looks I saw in magazines – and these magazine editorials were what I began to fall in love with. I personally felt like I wanted to learn more.

One of the biggest lessons I chose to get professional makeup training was so I could learn about the business attitude behind the artistry. The art of makeup is important, but the need to conduct yourself as a professional is just as important. So, I enrolled with QC Makeup Academy!

If you’d like to learn more about my journey in starting an online makeup education with QC, you can read my other blog article here.

One of the biggest perks about being a QC Makeup Academy student is the community it’s developed over the years. In the Virtual Classroom on Facebook, for example, you get to meet other artists within the industry. It’s nice because these are fellow students and graduates who are on the same journey as you! It’s also a place where we encourage each other, offer constructive criticism, and ultimately help one another grow.

During the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, having this online community has helped many people to stay connected and motivated. Being a part of an educational institution encourages you to think about your business, maintaining high standards, and how you can continuously improve. It’s an all-win situation!
