Someone left you a one-star review! What do you do now?<\/h4>\n<h4>In the age of social media, customer and client reviews can make or break a business. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2017\/08\/start-makeup-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">makeup business owner<\/a>, this pushes you to always offer the very best service. But you won\u2019t always please everyone. Sometimes, a dissatisfied client will leave you a terrible review. If this happens to you, here\u2019s what you should do:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n \t<li>\n<h4>Take a deep breath, and don\u2019t act impulsively.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n \t<li>\n<h4>Be honest: Is the review warranted? Look at it from your client\u2019s point of view.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n \t<li>\n<h4>Respond to the review both publicly and privately. Try to smooth things over. This could damage your professional reputation in even worse ways than a bad review can!\n\nWhen you get a bad makeup artistry review, you should never <em>ever<\/em>:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Attack the reviewer personally.<\/strong> No name-calling, no foul language. If you\u2019re catty, it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2018\/01\/4-sure-fire-ways-kill-makeup-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sure fire way of killing your makeup business<\/a>.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Give out a client\u2019s personal\/private information in a public forum.<\/strong> You might be tempted to write a long rebuttal of the review. There\u2019s nothing implicitly wrong with that (see below), but make sure you never give out information that the client won\u2019t want public. This includes their address, contact information, medical conditions, etc.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Accuse someone of lying.<\/strong> If the review is unwarranted, address the facts objectively. Someone who leaves an untrue review is looking to draw you into an emotional back-and-forth. Is any of it warranted? Think about it from their point of view and try not to flat out reject what they\u2019re saying in the effort to defend yourself.\n\nOdds are, the negative review will fall into one (or more) of these categories:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>The client was dissatisfied with your work<\/strong>. Reviews that attack your skills as a makeup artist can hurt the most. You did the best job you could. And obviously, you thought the client looked great\u2014otherwise you wouldn\u2019t have let them out of the chair! But these negative reviews are also the easiest ones to make right! So ask yourself: why was the client unhappy?<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Did you check in with them regularly to make sure they were happy with their makeup?<\/strong> Some of your makeup clients might not be completely happy with what you\u2019re doing but won\u2019t complain to your face.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Did you follow the client\u2019s directions? <\/strong>If a client asks you for a natural look and you ended up doing a dark smoky eye\u2026 they\u2019re right to be annoyed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Were you having a bad day\/off your game?<\/h3>\nHey, it happens. We all have days where we don\u2019t put in our best effort. Was the client\u2019s makeup just not up to par? Could you actually have done better? If you have a photo of the client\u2019s finished look, it could be worth sharing it with a trusted friend who\u2019s also a makeup artist. They may be able to provide an honest critique of your work.\n<h3>The client was dissatisfied with your prices<\/h3>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2015\/05\/how-to-price-your-makeup-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Setting your prices as a makeup artist<\/a> can be really tough. You want to be fair, but you also don\u2019t want to sell yourself short. Usually, negative reviews about makeup service fees can be a bit vague. It\u2019s not uncommon to get a one-star review that simply states, \u201cToo expensive!\u201d which isn\u2019t overly helpful. But if your prices are out of line for your area, that\u2019s something to address.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Were they looking for a discount?<\/strong> We\u2019ve all seen epic stories of \u201cchoosing beggars\u201d out there. Was this a simple case of someone asking for a discount because \u201creasons\u201d? This is an easy one to address!<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Did you charge them for services they didn\u2019t want?<\/strong> This one\u2019s probably on you. If you weren\u2019t up-front about your service pricing or the cost of extras (example: false lashes are often an extra charge), then the client has a valid point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The client had a problem with your professionalism<\/h3>\nClients will have varying expectations about professionalism from their makeup artists. But makeup artists should meet some basic standards for professionalism, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2016\/10\/how-to-dress-like-a-professional-makeup-arist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to dress<\/a> to meeting etiquette. If you were late for your appointment, had an untidy workspace, or disrespected the client in any way\u2026 you need to own those mistakes and promise to do better next time.\n<h3>Something happened that was out of your control<\/h3>\nAlways expect the unexpected. Unexpected circumstances can be a real challenge for makeup artists who usually work on tight deadlines. Most clients will understand and work with you to make things right. But if a client was \u00a0annoyed enough to leave a negative review about the situation, all you can do is address the situation publicly. Most future clients will take that review\/response as a one-off that they won\u2019t have to worry about.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Respond_Publicly_and_Maybe_Privately\"><\/span>3: Respond Publicly (and Maybe Privately)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nYou always want to leave a public reply to any negative review of your makeup business. Potential clients will see them and know you care about your professional reputation. And they\u2019ll see that you care enough about your clients to want to please them. The goal of your public reply is to put future client\u2019s minds at ease.\n\nYour response to each and every negative review should contain three elements:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Acknowledgment\/Apology<\/li>\n \t<li>Explanation<\/li>\n \t<li>Resolution<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>1: Acknowledgement\/Apology.<\/h3>\nYou want to start off any reply by acknowledging the client\u2019s complaint. If the review was warranted, apologize for their poor experience. If the review was unfounded, you can do the old \u201cI\u2019m sorry you feel that way\u201d apology.\n<h3>2: Explanation<\/h3>\nThis will be the longest section of your response. If the review was warranted, you\u2019ll want to take some time giving details on exactly what happened and\/or what you think went wrong and how you could have handled it better. If the review was unfounded, you can explain exactly why the review is unfounded.\n<h3>3: Resolution<\/h3>\nThe \u201cresolution\u201d is how you\u2019ll wrap up your reply so that it doesn\u2019t become a public back-and-forth with the client. If the review was warranted, you can offer to make amends. Not every client will want to take you up on your offer. But extending an olive branch makes you look good to anyone who reads the review. Makeup can always be adjusted, but we need to know what you like and don\u2019t like so that we can make appropriate changes. I realize that not everyone would be comfortable telling their makeup artist that, and I should have checked-in with you more during your application to make sure you were happy with the final product.\n\n[Resolution] If you\u2019re willing to give me another chance, I\u2019d love to invite you back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2017\/04\/set-makeup-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">makeup studio<\/a>. As I explained, my prices cover my time, travel time, and the makeup used, etc. I cannot offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2017\/03\/how-your-friends-are-hurting-your-makeup-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discounts to everyone who asks for one<\/a>.
