Some directors wait years to get their hands on the best SFX technology available (remember <i>Avatar<\/i>?), and some special effects are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M-pXDoe5a0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downright laughable<\/a>. Romero\u2019s <i>Living Dead<\/i> movie series, this classic zombie flick features the work of acclaimed SFX makeup artist Tom Savini. Borrowing from his experiences as a combat photographer in Vietnam, he translates the horrors he saw in war zones onto actors in his makeup chair. \n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Zombie.jpg\" alt=\"SFX Makeup Horror Film\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Zombie.jpg 672w, https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Zombie-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/>\n\nThere\u2019s a reason why this movie has garnered critical acclaim while most other gory horror movies are often written off by critics. Savini\u2019s work with disembodied limbs and grisly flesh-exploding shots were on full display in <i>Day of the Dead<\/i>, winning him a much deserved Saturn Award.\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hellraiser\"><\/span>Hellraiser<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nThis film pulls out all the SFX stops to create one of the most menacing Uncle Franks you\u2019ll ever meet. We\u2019re anti-spoiler, but let\u2019s just say the plot involves the death and resurrection of this creepy uncle, along with the summoning of supernatural creatures via a mysterious puzzle box. \n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Film-Devil-1.jpg\" alt=\"SFX Makeup Horror Film Devil\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15634\" \/>\n\nDid we mention these creatures have chains with fish-hook extremities that pierce into flesh? If that chilling description doesn&#8217;t immediate make you want to cower under some blankets, we don\u2019t know what will. While critics were divided on this movie, no one can argue that the true supernatural element in this movie is the SFX makeup expertise!\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Fly\"><\/span>The Fly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nWe would be absolute <i>monsters<\/i> if we didn\u2019t mention a Cronenberg movie! This Canadian director\u2019s most successful film won the Academy award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The brundlefly transformation, the point in the plot when a mad scientist becomes a monsterous fly-human hybrid, is not only a metaphor worthy of analysis in any Film Studies class, it\u2019s also <a href=\"http:\/\/img13.deviantart.net\/d43f\/i\/2015\/189\/f\/1\/the_fly_reboot__transformation_by_benzyvyngona-d8zrhy5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a nightmare to witness<\/a> on screen. \n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/horror-film-fly.jpg\" alt=\"sfx makeup horror film fly\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/horror-film-fly.jpg 672w, https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/horror-film-fly-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/>\n\nSFX lead Chris Walas first imagined the final creature before he built the next 6 stages of the transformation. We\u2019ll save you the ghastly details, as Cronenberg\u2019s sci-fi horror masterpiece is definitely better watched than described.\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frankenstein\"><\/span>Frankenstein<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nClose your eyes. Imagine Frankenstein\u2019s monster\u2019s face, body, and posture. What do you see? Green skin, forehead scar (from cranial surgery), and those iconic neck bolts? The Frankenstein monster we have come to imagine is actually from the feature film released in 1931! At the time of this film, SFX artist Jack Pierce was reluctant to use latex materials in his makeup, so he used cotton and putty to create the modifications so central to the monster\u2019s disfigured look. \n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Frankenstein.jpg\" alt=\"SFX Makeup Horror Film Frankenstein\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15635\" \/>\n\nEven though Jack Pierce and Boris Karloff (the actor who played the monster) spent four hours together every day in makeup, it was definitely worth it. The special effects work by Pierce created the most enduring version of the character. It\u2019s no wonder that this film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for being \u201cculturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.\u201d\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_American_Werewolf_in_London\"><\/span>An American Werewolf in London<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nThe legend behind this classic film is none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/2016\/07\/tbt-5-makeup-artistry-pioneers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Baker<\/a>. His Oscar-winning werewolf transformation blew everyone away when it first came out. In fact, it\u2019s still blowing minds to this day! Whether you\u2019re a horror-fan or just a cinema-geek, this \u201880s horror-comedy was way ahead of its time, and Baker\u2019s technical prowess is sure to stun you. \n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Werewolf.jpg\" alt=\"SFX Makeup Horror Film Werewolf\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Werewolf.jpg 672w, https:\/\/www.qcmakeupacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horror-Films-Werewolf-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/>\n\nBefore this SFX milestone of a movie, monster transformations typically happened off-screen\u2014the transformation would be mitigated by jump cuts\u2014but Baker\u2019s work allowed us to see a werewolf transformation happen right in front of our eyes.
