You know, the one who won\u2019t tell you exactly what she wants (just that what you\u2019re doing isn\u2019t it), or the one who isn\u2019t satisfied with anything you try. From totally unreasonable demands to endless re-dos, picky clients are frustrating.<\/p>\n\n<p>But they\u2019re a reality of your profession, so there\u2019s no avoiding them (unless you\u2019re really, really lucky). She trusts your professional opinion! But once you start working on her, the stress begins to build. Everything you do is \u201cfine\u201d (not \u201cgood\u201d) and you have no idea whether she actually likes your work because she won\u2019t give you any feedback. You\u2019ll never know (she\u2019s certainly not going to tell you!) but you <i>can<\/i> work on getting her to open up.<\/p>\n\n<p>Let her know early in the process that she doesn\u2019t have to worry about offending you, so she\u2019s totally free to tell you what she thinks along the way. Sometimes a client just needs reminding that although this is your work, it\u2019s <i>her<\/i> face, and you want her to go away looking and feeling her best!<\/p>\n\n<p>You can also try nudging some opinions out of her along the way. Asking \u201cdo you like this?\u201d probably won\u2019t get her to open up, so you\u2019ll need to be more specific. Instead, try going through a few colors or products in your kit and asking \u201cwhich one do you like best?\u201d Once she\u2019s settled on something she does like, you\u2019ll have an easier time building a look around it.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_client_whos_too_specific\"><\/span>The client who\u2019s too specific<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>This client is the total opposite\u2014she knows exactly what she wants, and she\u2019s sure to tell you every step of the way that you\u2019re not getting it!<\/p>\n\n<p>If the client hasn\u2019t already shown you pictures of what she wants, that\u2019s where you should start. It could just be that what she\u2019s asking for isn\u2019t actually what she wants; unlike you, makeup isn\u2019t her business, so she may not be as familiar as you are with its fancy names and terms.<\/p>\n\n<p>Still not satisfied? Despite how specific her own vision is, this client might be unhelpfully vague in her criticisms. Oh, she\u2019ll complain all right, but what are you supposed to do when she just tells you you\u2019re not \u201cdoing it right\u201d? Figure out exactly what she wants by asking her to get more detailed. Are the wings on her eyeliner just a little too long? Is the lipstick a smidge too light? Break down her look until you can figure out what exactly isn\u2019t working for her.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_client_who_doesnt_trust_you\"><\/span>The client who doesn\u2019t trust you<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>She grabs the mirror every fifteen seconds to check on your work. She reminds you to put on primer before the shadow (well, <i>duh<\/i>, you want to tell her). Maybe she even goes for your products and tries to put them on herself. It might be time to institute a no-peeks policy\u2014stash the mirror out of sight until she can check out a complete feature, since an unfinished eye always looks, well, unfinished.<\/p>\n\n<p>Like the last client, you\u2019ll also want to try and help her get a little more detailed about her concerns. Asking her \u201cwhat specifically is bothering you about this?\u201d or \u201cwhat are your concerns about my work right now?\u201d gives you an opportunity to explain what you\u2019re doing, reassuring her that you are actually a professional.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_client_with_unrealistic_expectations\"><\/span>The client with unrealistic expectations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>The middle-aged client who wants to look twenty years younger. The fair-skinned client who brings in pictures of dark-skinned models and asks for their look. You know the type\u2014she knows what she wants, and since makeup is magical, you should be able to give her anything she asks for, right?<\/p>\n\n<p>Nope. And unfortunately, you\u2019re the one stuck breaking that news to her. This client is especially tricky: you can\u2019t give her what she wants, and if you try she\u2019s just going to come away disappointed.<\/p>\n\n<p>The best thing to do is sit her down and explain why what she wants won\u2019t work. Sometimes she\u2019s not used to wearing makeup, so she just doesn\u2019t realize that what she\u2019s asking for is unrealistic. Even the best professional makeup artist won\u2019t be able to please everyone, so if a client throws a tantrum for something that isn\u2019t your fault, don\u2019t take it personally. When a client is going way over their appointment or treating you poorly, sometimes you\u2019ll have to draw the line and walk away.
