If they haven\u2019t, they probably have experience doing it themselves so they\u2019ll be familiar with some products and techniques. Occasionally, however, you might work with clients who have no experience with makeup at all. They don\u2019t wear it, they don\u2019t know how to apply it, and they probably don\u2019t own any!<\/p> \n\n<p>Clients with no makeup experience can be a fun opportunity for you. You\u2019ll practice teaching the basics of makeup and share your love for what you do. You might introduce them to products and techniques that make them feel confident and interest them in doing their own makeup. You might also be met with a little bit of concern and confusion. What are you putting on their face? What does that powder do? Be patient<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2> \n\n<p>Getting your makeup done by someone else can actually take some skill, and some people are better models than others. If your client has never had their makeup done professionally and they don\u2019t usually do their own, they might not realize they can help or hinder you. They might: \n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Purse their lips <\/li>\n\t<li>Flutter their eyelashes<\/li>\n\t<li>Tilt their chin up too high<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If they do, be patient with them. Gently coax them to:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Relax their face<\/li>\n\t<li>Look in a certain direction<\/li>\n\t<li>Help you with in other ways with their body language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>You\u2019ll work better as a team if you\u2019re patient with first-time makeup artistry clients.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Be_careful\"><\/span>2. Be careful<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>You\u2019re a professional, so you know to be careful around your clients\u2019 eyes, nose, and mouth. You want to make your client:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Look great <\/li>\n\t<li>Feel confident<\/li>\n\t<li>Feel comfortable during the application, even if they don\u2019t realize their squirming makes your job tough!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Clients who are new to makeup and already feel wary of mascara wands certainly won\u2019t be pleased if you poke them in the eye. They\u2019re more easily scared off by a negative experience than someone who has poked their own eye with a mascara wand and might be more understanding.<\/p> \n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Be_informative\"><\/span>3. Be informative<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2> \n\n<p>Why not take the chance to teach someone about your art and tools? Be approachable<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Clients who are new to makeup might be curious and excited, so expect lots of questions! They should feel comfortable asking you for details and you should be ready to answer them.<\/p>\n \n<ul>\n\t<li>Remember: What\u2019s common sense for you might not be for others. You\u2019re a professional, after all!<\/li>\n \t<li>Answer them in a friendly way<\/li>\n\t<li>Use terms and explanations that they\u2019ll understand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The friendlier and more approachable you are, the more comfortable they\u2019ll feel with the entire experience.<\/p> \n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Be_prepared\"><\/span>5. Be prepared<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>During the consultation, ask your clients how frequently they wear makeup. If they have a bit of experience, you might ask them to bring their own foundation to ensure a good color match, just in case the shades in your kit aren\u2019t quite right. If you don\u2019t ask about their experience and then you make this request:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>They might buy the wrong product<\/li>\n\t<li>They might choose the wrong shade<\/li>\n \t<li>Time and money could be wasted for both of you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If you know they\u2019re not prepared to bring their own foundation, you might purchase one for them that color matches well and is in their price range. You\u2019ll add this cost to the final cost of the makeup application. Be soothing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Some people feel discomfort when they don\u2019t know what to expect. Others just don\u2019t like being touched. Of course, they\u2019ll have to work with you a little since they chose to have their makeup done! Their posture and movements might be rigid, so respect their discomfort. They don\u2019t feel relaxed because they don\u2019t know what to expect. Help them feel comfortable by:<\/p>  \n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Engaging in small talk if they seem open to the idea<\/li>\n\t<li>Sticking to necessary communication if chat makes them edgy<\/li>\n\t<li>Giving them calm guidance about how to move<\/li>\n\t<li>Offering to answer any questions<\/li>\n\t<li>Explaining things if they seem uncomfortable at any point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>You want new clients to leave your chair feeling great and open to the idea of having their makeup done again (preferably by you)!<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Be_understanding\"><\/span>7. Be understanding<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>This is a new experience for your client, so don\u2019t be offended if they question you\u2026 a lot! They don\u2019t doubt your abilities; they just don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re doing.<\/p> \n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Maybe they\u2019ve never seen how crazy contouring can look before you\u2019ve blended!<\/li>\n\t<li>Their idea of professional makeup might come from celebrity red carpets and Instagram<\/li>\n\t<li>They might expect different looks, products, or amounts of makeup as a result<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Be understanding of their expectations and where those come from.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_fun_with_it\"><\/span>Have fun with it!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2> \n\n<p>Working with a client who doesn\u2019t wear makeup can be a fun opportunity for both of you.
