QC Makeup Academy Graduate Feature: Gabbie-anne Worthington

By About the School, Featured, Graduate Feature, Student Features No Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi, my name is Gabbie-Anne and I’m a graduate (and current student) of QC Makeup Academy. I’m from a rural town in Queensland, Australia. I have a huge passion for anything involving makeup. I’ve also recently started my own small business, Gab’s Nails & Beauty!

Where did your love of makeup come from?

My love of makeup comes from a deep-rooted passion and love for art. I have always been able to pick up a pencil/pen and draw what I was feeling. So, being able to do the same – but with makeup – excited me.

I grew up loving all things girly! At a young age, I found a love for the local dance house. When it came time for the performances, they would give us dramatic hairstyles and makeup, which I loved! Growing up in this environment, I enjoyed the feeling of getting dressed up and performing, as well as having people comment on the outfits and makeup I was wearing.

All of this made me fall in love with the beauty industry right away!

Prior to your enrollment with QC Makeup Academy, when was the moment you decided to become a professional makeup artist?

In my final years of schooling, I created a makeup page on social media. Having people I knew comment and encourage me was a huge confidence boost!

After leaving school, I would have people approach me to do their makeup for events like race days, balls, formals, and debutants. As more and more people approached me, I decided that I wanted to become a professional makeup artist. This way, I’d be able to give my customers confidence that I could give them a high-quality service of professionalism.

Why did you choose to pursue your certification training online, rather than in-person?

As I’m from a very rural town, it’s hard to travel back and forth to the city. Completing a makeup course online is a lot easier for me, as it gives me the flexibility to work on my schooling in my own home and at my own pace.

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy and what was it about QC that made you decide to enroll?

I did a lot of research into many online makeup schools, as well as the courses they could provide me. After reading about QC Makeup Academy, I immediately knew that this would be the perfect fit for me!

I had an idea of the type of courses I wanted to complete. For this reason, QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course intrigued me – especially with all the types of assignments I’d be completing. Moreover, I knew that learning the various makeup subjects taught in this program would give me more qualifications for when I graduated.

Now that you have graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course, how was your experience with this certification program?

I loved it! I enjoyed progressing through the course and learning more about the professional side of the beauty industry.

Progressing through the course, I had to push myself to be creative. It was hard at first, but once I received my tutor’s feedback, I was more confident in my ability to be better. After completing my training, I’ve come to understand that my much-loved hobby is something that I will definitely turn into a full-time profession!

All my feedback for this course is positive.

It’s the BEST makeup course for someone who wants to become a professional makeup artist!

Gabbie-anne Worthington portfolio image 3

How beneficial were the learning materials and tutor feedback QC Makeup Academy provided you for the MMA Course?

The course guide booklet was very useful in keeping me on top of my progress through the course. The textbooks themselves provided a lot of key information, as well as insight into the kind of work I’d one day be involved in after graduating from QC Makeup Academy.

Moreover, the information provided to me to help me complete my course has broadened my makeup knowledge beyond anything I could’ve learned from social media!

My tutor was Nathan Johnson. His words of encouragement and constructive criticism combined pushed me to work harder on my assignments. It helped me correct my mistakes and work on perfecting my techniques. I wouldn’t have done as well as I did if I hadn’t have gotten the feedback I did from him!

What was your favorite hands-on assignment for this course and why?

I enjoyed ALL of the assignments for this course. However, my favorites were a part of the Fashion and Editorial Unit. They were different from anything I had ever done before!

I got to learn about the process of creating makeup looks for each show. Also, I learned how a makeup artist can get to work personally with the fashion designer, and create something they love and will show with their designer outfits. This was something I never thought I would want to do – but after completing that unit, it’s now a possibility!

You’ve also enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop and Virtual Makeup Training courses, too. Why did you want to further your training with these courses, and how do you expect them to aid in your career’s success?

Furthering my knowledge on makeup was a no-brainer. Being able to add to my Master International Makeup Professional (MIMP) certification is something I look forward to!

As you mentioned earlier, you already run your own beauty business, Gab’s Nails & Beauty. Tell us a little about this business! What kinds of services do you currently offer clients? Which services do you want to add in the future?

I recently started this business as a way of progressing into the beauty industry. Having my own business gives me the flexibility I need right now. I provide beauty services, including:

  • Acrylic nails;
  • Pedicures;
  • Small waxing services;
  • Lash and brow tint;
  • And makeup for events.

In the future, I hope to add eyelash extensions, facials, and other advanced makeup/beauty services.

Currently, what are your career goals? Where would you like to see yourself – and your business – in 5 years?

My current goals are to complete my courses with QC Makeup Academy and work on building my small business into something more stable. In the future, I hope to be moved from my hometown to somewhere I can provide my services in a more professional setting.

The dream is to own a small shop with a rustic-chic theme. I want to provide a comfortable experience to customers; something different from what they are used to seeing in a salon or nail bar.

What are the top reasons why you’d recommend QC Makeup Academy to aspiring and working MUAs alike?

Firstly, QC Makeup Academy provides online certification courses, which is something a lot of people look for today. Secondly, you’re able to work at your own pace, in a place where you’re comfortable. You don’t need to worry about traveling for assignments, which takes away a lot of the stress, I think.

Thirdly, QC also provides a lot of useful course materials, as well as a full starter makeup kit – which is amazing! I found that this saves a lot of time and money since you don’t need to try and find your own makeup in order to begin your training.

What advice would you give to someone who’s currently dreaming of becoming a makeup artist?

If it’s something you love and you have a huge passion for it, why not make it your career? Doing something you love for a living and giving others an experience like no other is better than anything!

GO FOR IT! Nothing is stopping you from chasing your dreams!

Finally: What’s the HOLY GRAIL product in your makeup kit and why?

Oh my god, I couldn’t pick just one thing! I think a palette with a variety of colors is something every artist needs. Something you could use for the eyes, eyebrows, cheeks, lips, etc. would always come in handy!

Video #1: Half Glam / Half SFX

However, she then unveils the other side of her face… and we’re quickly stunned by the realistic bruising and road rash effect! (And maybe a little squeamish, too!)

How is it possible that Gemma could pull off BOTH applications with such perfection?

Because she’s been properly trained in classic makeup techniques and SFX techniques, that’s why! With a skill-set like this, Gemma can easily apply her talents to every client imaginable. And this is EXACTLY why a proper certification course (such as QC’s Special FX Makeup Course) will help you learn how to do special effects makeup like a true, seasoned pro!

Earning My Makeup Artist Certification!

Meet Makeup Artist Certification Student, Jessica Lee!

Master Makeup Artistry Student

Pro Makeup Workshop Student

Skincare Student

Bowmanville, ON

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Jessica. Currently, my main goal is to successfully obtain my makeup artist certification through QC Makeup Academy! I’m also 33 years old, and a mother of 4 little humans and 5 fur babies.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I know the power that makeup has had for me. It can turn a bad day into a good day and empower you. By getting my makeup artist certification, I want to be able to help other people let their inner light and inner beauty shine bright!

Jessica Lee portfolio image 1

In your opinion, why do you feel it’s important for all MUAs to have a professional makeup artist certification?

I feel it’s very important because it shows your clients that you know what you’re doing and that they’re safe in your hands!

Why did you decide to pursue your makeup artist certification online, rather than in person?

I have 4 kids and they take up a LOT of my time! Also, I have 4 jobs, a house to run, and a million other things on my schedule. A brick-and-mortar makeup school would never be able to accommodate me like an online school can! With online makeup school, I can do my certification training at my own pace. There’s never any rush. Who wouldn’t want that?

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy? Ultimately, what was it about QC that made you decide to enroll?

I discovered QC Makeup Academy through an ad on Facebook. Once I did my research on their industry-leading tutors, their certification courses, and the school as a whole, I was sold. I signed up that very day!

Jessica Lee portfolio image 2

You’re over halfway done in the Master Makeup Artistry Course. How has your experience been in this certification program thus far? In what ways has your training helped you grow as an artist?

I’ve absolutely loved every minute of QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course so far! Some assignments are more challenging than others, but that’s all part of growing as an artist. I’ve grown so much in the year that I’ve been enrolled with QC. I had to throw out everything I thought I knew, in order to truly learn the proper techniques I was being taught… and thank goodness for that!

You’re also currently enrolled in our Pro Makeup Workshop. Why have you decided to add this advanced makeup artist certification to your qualifications, and how do you expect this additional training to refine your skill-set?

I could NOT pass up the opportunity to enroll in QC’s Pro Makeup Workshop! After all, why stop learning at the basics? Why not take it that step further? Continuing your education and building upon your existing makeup artist certification will help you broaden your horizons. Plus, it’ll likely help you grow your client base. Personally, I can’t wait to start this program!

Skincare training is an essential benefit to all makeup artists. What are the top reasons you enrolled in QC’s Skincare Course, and what’s the most important skincare lesson you’ve learned so far?

All makeup applications start with skin. If you don’t know how to properly identify your client’s skin type, how can you possibly know which primer to use? How will you know which type of setting powder you need to apply? Furthermore, how will you know which foundation to use?

The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that a daily skincare routine is a MUST! Perfect skin doesn’t come naturally – unless you were blessed by the gods, of course. But for most of us, you have to work for it. QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course teaches you exactly how to do this!

Makeup artist certification article, Jessica Lee portfolio image 3

How useful have all the QC materials and assignments been for your makeup artist certification courses?

The materials for my courses aren’t just useful – they’re a necessity. Each assignment teaches you something new and helps you grow in ways you’ve never imagined! Plus, all these course textbooks provide you with priceless information to help you become the best makeup artist you can be!

How valuable has the feedback been from your tutor, Nathan Johnson?

I have to admit, I was scared of Nathan at first… Haha! In my mind, he was this renowned, intimidating makeup artist who was basically telling me that I had to start over from scratch. But now? I value every word of feedback he gives me, good or bad! Personally, I don’t want an instructor who sugarcoats things. Rather, I want one who will truly help me grow, both as an artist and as a person. Nathan has become one of the most important people in my life. I cherish our friendship!

What has been your FAVORITE hands-on assignment so far for your makeup artist certification training, and why?

Without a doubt, I’d have the say the celebrity-inspired assignment was my favorite! I chose Boy George and had an absolute blast going through and recreating his many outrageous and stunning looks!

You’ve recently joined QC Makeup Academy’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, why do you recommend QC’s online makeup artist certification training?

Most people live crazy, busy lives. This has especially been the case during the COVID-19 pandemic! After all, many adults have been stuck at home. Some still are and will be for a while yet. QC Makeup Academy offers you an amazing education, all from the comfort of your living room! Moreover, there’s no rush. You do it at your own pace, and the tutors are all so hands-on with their students. It’s very rare to find all of these perks offered from one school!

You’re located in Bowmanville, Ontario; a town has approx. 40,000 residents. However, you’re also a 20-minute drive from Oshawa – a city of approx. 402,000 people. How do you feel your location will work to your advantage throughout your makeup career?

Bowmanville is a farm town, but Oshawa is a growing, bustling city. Having a small town with a bigger city close-by provides me with a wide variety of client possibilities! Not to mention, there are many films that’ve begun filming in and around Oshawa, such as Stephen King’s IT. The possibilities are endless!

What services do you currently offer clients?

Unfortunately, I live in a province that’s been under lockdown for quite some time. So, there hasn’t been much beauty experts could do, in terms of providing in-person makeup or skincare services. During this time, I’ve taken to offering online lessons in basic makeup application techniques. Sometimes, it’s one-on-one. Other times, people host online group parties for it. Luckily, Ontario is beginning to open back up, so regular industry services should be resuming very soon!

Once you’ve earned your makeup artist certification, what are your top career goals as a professional MUA?

My goal is to make a name for MYSELF. I want to achieve this, not just through just social media, but through my work. Ultimately, I just want to help people. I’ll be happy doing this in whatever capacity I can.

Finally: in your opinion, what is the TRUE secret to success as a makeup artist?

The true secret to being a successful makeup artist is being able to take constructive criticism. Use it as a learning tool to better yourself. Beyond that, it’s important to never stop learning. This way, you will never stop growing!

QC Makeup Academy Reviews: Hayley Siebe

By About the School, QC Student Ambassador, Student Features 3 Comments

Want to connect with Hayley directly? Join QC Makeup Academy’s free Virtual Classroom on Facebook today!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! My name is Hayley Marie Siebe. I’m a 21-year-old makeup artist and a graduate of QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. I am also a current Student of the Hairstyling Essentials Course, Pro Makeup Workshop, and Global Beauty Workshop. Recently, I became one of QC Makeup Academy’s newest Student Ambassadors!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

During my teenage years, you’d find me in front of the mirror, applying makeup and straightening my hair bright and early, every morning before school. Growing up, beauty and glamor have always been great passions of mine. They gave me motivation! In particular, makeup gave me the chance to express my creativity in so many ways!

I always loved to experiment with makeup and recreate all types of cute, dazzling looks. Over time, I began doing makeup on other people, as well as styling hair. Women would end up with a smile on their face every time they saw the finished results. Ever since then, I’ve known that I wanted to make other people look and feel their best! Being a professional makeup artist gives me that opportunity.

QC Makeup Academy reviews article, Hayley Siebe portfolio image 1

How did you discover QC Makeup Academy? Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with this school?

I discovered QC Makeup Academy during my Junior Year of high school. Right away, I felt that this school would be the perfect place for me to start! With their training, I’d be able to join the career field I’ve always wanted to be a part of. After I graduated high school in May of 2019, I enrolled myself into QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course and Hair Styling Essentials Course.

I chose QC Makeup Academy because their school offers so many things you can’t find anywhere else! You get a full 2 years to complete your course, while working at your own pace. This is something many schools don’t have or accept. Moreover, I’m able to access my Online Student Center whenever I want to look back at information in my textbooks and/or instructional videos.

I also loved the fact that QC’s assignments never need to be rushed. There’s also an option to redo assignments for a better grade, if needed. You also get a real, internationally-recognized certification once you graduate. It was important to me that I’d be able to work anywhere (if I wanted to) and have clients know I’ve had experience in this kind of work before.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program and how would you say it helped you grow as an artist?

My experience with QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course has been amazing! I’ve never been more excited to learn anything in my life. During my time in this course, I would always set goals for myself. For example: I’d set a goal for when I wanted to turn in an assignment, or set a goal for how much time I’d practice on a particular assignment. If I was unhappy with how a makeup look turned out, I’d also challenge myself to get better and better. I’d refuse to submit my work until I felt it was truly ready, and would end up trying again.

Since graduating from the MMA course, I’ve been able to go about building my own freelance makeup artistry business. I’ve been using the knowledge and tools that my tutor, Nathan Johnson, has given to me. Furthermore, I’ve also assisted a Cincinnati-based bridal MUA for a few weddings. Through this experience, I was able to gain a few clients who wanted to book me for future weddings!

QC Makeup Academy has had a very positive impact on my career thus far. Their Master Makeup Artistry program was the first certified makeup course I’d ever completed. I can say without doubt that their training has given me the tools and confidence to grow as a makeup artist!

Why did you also choose to enroll in QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop?

I enrolled myself into QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop because I believe that more practice makes perfect! It’s my goal to take my makeup skills to the next level and add onto my current experience.

Hayley Siebe portfolio image 2

As you’ve mentioned, you’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Global Beauty Workshop and Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you enroll in these particular courses, and how do you plan to incorporate these services in your business once you’ve graduated?

The reason I enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Global Beauty Workshop is because I want to get more experience applying makeup on all groups of people, skin tones, etc. What’s more, I wish to learn more about different cultures. Once I graduate from this course, I want to incorporate everything I’ve learned in order to further build my freelance business. I want to be able to travel around the country, applying makeup on any and every type of client who wishes to work with me!

As for the Hair Styling Essentials Course, I chose to enroll in this program because I wanted to add on another service to my freelance business. When I was younger, I was always that friend you would go to if you needed your hair colored or styled! I always enjoyed being able to work with my hands and create. Thanks to this certification course, I am progressing my hair styling skills and will be able to put them to good use!

How useful have all the QC Makeup Academy course materials and assignments been so far?

QC Makeup Academy provides their courses with paperback and digital textbooks, as well as instructional videos and a wide array of assignments. These materials as a whole not only help you learn how to be a professional makeup artist – they also help you to succeed as one, too!

Now, I know what your thinking: “Can’t I just do a quick Google or YouTube search for free hair and/or makeup tutorials?”

Sure, but this will never be enough if you want to do makeup professionally. With QC Makeup Academy, you’re being taught by internationally-trained makeup artists and hair stylists! These are legitimate experts who have put 10-20 years of their life into the beauty industry. They’ll teach you about real-world makeup. Moreover, you’ll also learn other critical knowledge, such as Sanitary Guidelines and invaluable business training!

You’re currently building your own freelance makeup business. How has this process been so far?

After graduating from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course, I created my own professional business profile on QC’s online database. Creating this profile was the first step in establishing a web presence for my business, thus allowing potential clients to find me.

During this time, I’ve been slowly gaining more and more clients. I’ve also created a business page on Facebook and Instagram, too. This way, I can start getting my work out there. Furthermore, I can let people know that I am properly certified – especially in my community. I live in a small suburban town in Kentucky called Hebron. Hebron has a population of less than 7,000 people. The best way to gain clientele in a small town is to be the makeup artist your town needs!

In order for me to corner the market and maximize my success, I need to advertise my business in my area. After all, there are no other professional makeup artists currently operating in Hebron, KY. So, this gives me a HUGE opportunity!

Hayley Siebe portfolio image 3

What services do you currently offer your clients?

As part of my freelance business, I currently offer a variety of services. Firstly, I cater to makeup for special events. Anyone taking part in (or attending) an event can get a full-face makeup application. This service will include airbrush makeup, foundation, and false lashes.

Secondly, I also offer bridal makeup. For this service, I charge the bride $85 for a full-face application. For the Bridal Party, as well as for the Mother of the Bride (or Groom), I charge $65. Thirdly, I offer full-face makeup applications for photoshoots, Senior portraits, Proms/Homecomings, etc. I charge between $70-$75 for this type of service. For any other kind of special event, I charge $65 for a full-face makeup application.

Lastly, I offer makeup applications that aren’t full-face as well. For instance, for concealer, airbrush, face powder, blush, and highlighter, my rate is $45. If a client just wants eyeshadow and mascara, it’ll cost $20. If a client just wants eyeliner and lashes only, my rate is $20. And if someone just wants me to do their eyebrows, I charge only $15.

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

One of my top career goals as a makeup artist is to be able to travel all around the country, doing other people’s makeup. In addition to bridal makeup, I also want to target more clients interested in editorial and fashion makeup applications. I love being able to apply dramatic makeup!

One day, I see my makeup business being big enough that it has a forever impact on each and every client I have – or end up gaining in the future! Thanks to the QC Makeup Academy family, I’ve given myself the best possible start to my professional beauty career!

Makeup artistry Ambassador Feature, Michelle Lannon, Feature Image

Meet Makeup Artistry Expert, Michelle Lannon!

By Graduate Feature, QC Student Ambassador, Student Ambassador 3 Comments

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Michelle Lannon and I’m a certified makeup artistry expert. I’ve always had a passion for art, beauty, and design. I’m obsessed with coffee, Jack Skellington, and anything Halloween-related. I also love the color purple (the actual color, not the movie) and, of course, makeup! I’m originally from NYC. However, I’ve lived in several places all over the United States, such as Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, Nashville, and now Richmond.

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I have always had an interest in makeup. Fun fact: I actually began playing with it at the incredibly young age of 2! In trying to mimic my mother, I decided that a nail polish brush belonged in my eye… lol! Thankfully, my skills have improved dramatically since then – especially with the help of QC Makeup Academy‘s courses. I was always the person my immediate family and my friends went to when they wanted help with their hair or makeup.

(And I still am to this day!)

Makeup artistry Ambassador Feature, Michelle Lannon portfolio image 1

Why did you decide to take makeup artistry classes online, rather than in-person?

Back when I enrolled with QC Makeup Academy, I was in a bit of a transitional period. I’ve done what I “should” be doing my whole life, but not what I actually wanted to be doing. I’d just been laid off from a job – a job that, I admit, my whole heart was definitely not in.

So, I was trying to figure out my next move. My cousin actually attends QC, too, and they’re the one who first introduced me to the school. I am a busy person. Thus, online courses work well for me, as I can easily and conveniently fit my training into my lifestyle.

Ultimately, why did you choose to enroll with QC Makeup Academy?

As I mentioned above, my cousin, Melissa Pallone, introduced me to QC. I liked what she was learning and doing, so I decided to take the plunge and try it myself. I’m so glad I did, because I’ve learned so much since doing enrolling! Initially, I was not sure at one point if I would keep going. However, I was encouraged by my peers – as well as my tutor, Nathan Johnson – to keep pushing.

You’ve since graduated from QC’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program and how would you say it helped you grow as an artist?

I won’t lie, it was challenging! If you’re willing to have yourself challenged, push the status quo, discover who you are as a creative, and actually give your all, then you should definitely enroll in the Master Makeup Artistry Course!

I completed the program before the course was updated. As I understand it, it’s even MORE challenging now than it was when I did it! I personally love a good challenge, because I love to learn. Trust me when I say that you’ll do both in this course. QC Makeup Academy provides you with the basic tools needed to complete their training (although many of us have also added our own tools out of personal preference).

The best advice I can give is: pay attention! Watch and re-watch the videos. Listen to the feedback provided to you – both by your tutor(s) and your peers – and never take anything personally. Constructive feedback will only ever help you become better! So long as you do all this, you’ll grow and flourish not only in this course, but the professionally industry as well.

Michelle Lannon portfolio image 2

You’ve also completed QC Makeup Academy’s Skincare Course. In your opinion, why should ALL makeup artistry experts have proper skincare training?

Initially, I was not sure about the Skincare Course. But after watching a webinar that Nathan Johnson did on the value of proper skincare (as a basis for good makeup), I decided to give it a try. I figured that, if nothing else, it would give me some tips I may not have already known.

Boy, was I in for a surprise!!!

This is another course that will challenge you. You learn so much about what goes into skincare. Moreover, you learn about the good and bad ingredients to look for, as well as how to properly determine skin types. Altogether, this knowledge is a fundamental building block in makeup artistry!

In fact, I would even go so far as to advise EVERYONE to complete this course. You can absolutely take it after you’ve completed the Master Makeup Artistry Course, or concurrently with it. However, Nathan has said countless times that – if given the choice – it’s recommend that you take it before the MMA Course. Either way, knowing what to look out for and how to treat skin is a must. Only then can you provide the top-notch makeup services we all want to give our clients!

You’re also currently enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop and Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why did you enroll in these particular courses and how do you plan to incorporate these services into your business once you’ve graduated?

As an artist, I have always played with airbrushes. At one point in time, I even helped my son rebuild an old ’76 Camaro and did the airbrushing on it. I decided that since I had that fundamental knowledge, knowing how to provide these services with makeup would be beneficial. Plus, airbrush is a beautiful makeup, when applied correctly. It’s something that, these days, most brides are looking for on their big day!

My goal is to build a completely self-sufficient, sustainable business on the education that QC has provided to me. Knowing how to do event hair is also something that definitely applies here! Most people don’t want to go to 3-4 different people in order to complete one look for an event. Since I’ll know how to do it all, I can provide a one-stop-shop for my clients.

I’ve already incorporated both services into what I provide to clients, and I plan to do even more in the future!

How useful have all the QC Makeup Academy course materials and assignments been so far?

Incredibly useful! When I began the Master Makeup Artistry Course, I had a bit of trouble with the shadows provided. But once I got a bit further into the program, I was able to use them successfully. I cannot tell you how excited I was to receive the airbrush materials and starter kit. I was overjoyed that the airbrush machine and all of the fantasy and foundation products were from Temptu! Also, the curling wand (and 5 interchangeable barrels) that I received for my hairstyling course is great as well!

Give us one example of constructive tutor feedback that allowed you to grow as a makeup artist!

Nathan and I have a funny story about my journey. When I was first travelling through my Master Makeup Artistry journey, most of the tutor feedback I kept getting was, “Stop copying social media!” That, as well as some very constructive criticism.

I kept getting this feedback because prior to taking QC Makeup Academy’s courses, social media was what I had to refer to when learning the craft. It was a tough journey to break those habits – and along the way, I actually almost quit because I truly thought Nathan hated me! Lol! Of course, I now realize that that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

My advice is to develop a thick skin. This isn’t an easy industry to work in, and in order to truly thrive, you need to be able to hear harsh truths sometimes. All of the criticism provided is meant to help you grow and develop your skills as an artist. We’re trained to develop an “eye” when viewing makeup. So long as you always challenge yourself, you will be unstoppable!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your makeup artistry certification training?

Firstly, I cannot stress enough the importance of sanitization. Keep your “house” clean and you’ll never have an issue. This means keeping clean brushes, clean kits, clean makeup, and most of all, a clean self. After all, you are the first thing a client sees. If you fail to make a good first impression, they’ll never use you again.

Secondly, another critical lesson I learned was symmetry. Symmetry is incredibly important. Moreover, it’s something you should always be striving for in your applications.

Thirdly, practice! Always keep practicing, even once you graduate. You will never learn it all, trust me.

Lastly, do not underestimate the value of knowing how to do classic makeup! Learn it, master it, and embrace it. It’s truly the basis for everything in makeup artistry.

You earned your Master International Makeup Professional (MIMP) certification back in 2019. Tell us how your makeup career has been going since then!

It had taken off incredibly well. In fact, I was steadily booking clients until COVID hit. I’d been working for a friend (who is a Boudoir photographer), as well as taking outside clients. I’m hoping to re-establish some clientele here in my new adopted home soon!

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want brand-new students to know about QC Makeup Academy?

ASK QUESTIONS! We are a friendly community of likeminded individuals who will never hesitate to help. With that said, however, you must also be willing to put in the time finding answers. This is especially the case in QC’s Virtual Classroom on Facebook. Do your own research and utilize the search bar before asking questions. There’s a good chance your inquiry has already been addressed before!

If you are still stuck, then never hesitate to ask away. After all, that is what we are here for. Furthermore, challenge yourself to grow beyond what you have learned during your time with QC. I have a motto in life: ABL. “Always be learning”. I’m the type of person who is never satisfied that I’ve learned everything. As a result, I always want to learn new things. So, take advanced courses, talk to your peers, network, and do everything you possibly can to further hone your craft.

What has been the most challenging part of launching your own makeup artistry business, and how have you overcome this challenge?

Marketing. That has been an absolute problem for me. I started a website, but had to shut it down for financial reasons when the pandemic hit,. Now, I’m getting ready to start it back up again. I also had to learn that sometimes, word-of-mouth is the best marketing tool in the arsenal.

What services do you currently offer clients?

If you can dream it, I will do it – so long as it’s within my power and qualifications, of course. I do everything from basic makeup artistry applications, all the way up to amateur special effects. (I’ve not yet taken QC’s Special FX Makeup Course yet, but I definitely plan to in the future!) I’ve worked jobs for boudoir, prom, special event, and face painting already. I would love to book more!

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

I want to have a successful and thriving business that I can be proud of. My main goal is to get to a place where I no longer have to have a separate, full-time job. Instead, I’ll be able to do what makes me happy every day: makeup!

Finally: in your opinion, what’s the definition of “success” in the world of professional makeup artistry?

Waking up each and every day, excited to do what makes you happy. Being recommended by everyone you work on to others. Experiencing the joy that comes with making someone’s world a bit brighter.

After all, we never know what journey people are on in life. You could be working on someone who is struggling with depression, a terminal illness, or a lack of self-esteem. Your work could make all of the difference and change the way a person sees both life and themselves!

These 6 TikTok Videos Will Show Why YOU Should be Learning Makeup with QC Makeup Academy!

By About the School, Education, From the Experts, QC Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career 4 Comments

Learning Makeup Online vs. Professionally

Contrary to popular belief, learning makeup through social media is NOT the same as learning it professionally. Proper training, after all, is led by real industry experts. Through it, you can truly hone a skill-set of industry standard, understand the craft, and gain the knowledge needed to create any look!

QC Makeup Academy’s very own Student Ambassador, Alba Carpio, has discovered this first-hand. Prior to her professional training, she was learning makeup solely through watching beauty influencers and their tutorials. However, an embarrassing situation caused her to realize that all of the “techniques” she’d adopted were really just bad habits in disguise!

Now, Alba has graduated from the following certification courses with QC Makeup Academy:

  • Master Makeup Artistry
  • Pro Makeup Workshop
  • Skincare
  • Special FX Makeup

Moreover, Alba is currently enrolled in QC’s Airbrush Makeup Workshop, Virtual Makeup Course, and Portfolio Development Workshop. As an MUA who’s gone from learning online to learning properly, her new mission is to maximize her social media platform to teach others why a professional makeup education is so critical… especially if one wishes to have a long-term, successful career in the beauty industry!

Check Out These TikTok Videos!

Currently based in Belgium, Alba has worked hard to amass a TikTok following of 279.7 thousand people! Recently, she created a series of videos for her TikTok channel, teasing at some of the most beneficial reasons why she feels all aspiring MUAs should be learning makeup through QC Makeup Academy.

Let’s take a look at them, shall we?

Video #1

Learning Makeup: “QC Makeup Academy changed my life…”

Firstly, this incredible comparison demonstrates the power of makeup. Secondly, it also shows the drastic transformation one can create when learning makeup the right way!

Through QC Makeup Academy’s self-paced, online courses, you can get professionally educated and internationally-certified in as little as 2-6 months. As soon as you graduate, you can then make all of your clients’ jaws drop as you bring their beauty visions to life! Not to mention, you can also use your subject-matter expertise to set new trends and make a name for yourself on social media, just like Alba has!

Video #2

Learning Makeup: “I am a professional 💅”

🎵 There’s one thing you can expect from me and that’s the unexpected… 🎵

When looking at the woman at the very beginning of this video, you’d never guess that she is a professionally certified makeup artist. But it’s true – and if you keep watching, you’ll understand why!

Many of QC Makeup Academy’s students begin their training from ground zero. They’re learning makeup professionally for the very first time and have no prior experience. This is exactly why we offer 2 Foundational Courses, depending on your goals:

  1. Makeup Artistry Course: Designed to take your personal makeup game to impressively stunning levels!
  2. Master Makeup Artistry CourseDesigned to take even those at a novice level and turn you into a trained expert in as little as 2-6 months. By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to book paying clients and deliver a high-quality service that’s sure to amaze!

Video #3

Learning Makeup: “They always ask me 🤭 This is my secret”

Learning makeup takes time, dedication, and effort. But as a result, you know how to create applications that look effortless and flawless, no matter how detailed the execution is!

This, as Alba reveals, is her secret. People constantly ask her how she became such a talented makeup artist. Her response is that she got properly trained with QC Makeup Academy! To her, it’s as simple as that. Without a solid education under her belt, her skill-set would have never grown to the level it’s at now.

Video #4

Learning Makeup: “I LOVE QC Makeup Academy and you will, too”

In this video, Alba once again demonstrates just how much learning makeup professionally will take your craft to the high standard expected within the beauty industry. Can you believe the night-and-day difference between the Alba we see at the beginning, versus the Alba revealed at the end?

We sure can’t!

Video #5

Learning Makeup: “How I do a classic winged eyeliner”

When learning makeup professionally, you’ll quickly discover that there’s a fundamental difference between technique and style. Only by first mastering the core techniques of makeup artistry can you then apply it and create all sorts of different styles.

One such technique that’s always been wildly popular is the classic winged eyeliner. Luckily, through QC Makeup Academy’s training, this is just ONE of the techniques you’ll learn exactly how to master!

Check out this TikTok video wherein Alba demonstrates how she achieves her favorite winged eyeliner look, based on what she learned through her QC course.

Video #6

Learning Makeup: “I study while I take care of my blessed 😇 🌟”

3 Mistakes to AVOID in Your Makeup Classes if You Want to Be Successful in the Industry

By Career Advice, Education, From the Experts, QC Student Ambassador, Your Makeup Career 2 Comments

Professional makeup classes will teach you a LOT more than just how to do makeup. Rather, they’re also meant to prepare you for the real, professional industry. This means helping you develop the right business etiquette and frame of mind. If you’re reading this article, it’s because you’re seriously passionate about your craft. So, we know that this isn’t the outcome you want for your career!

This is why today, we’re here to take a look at 3 critical mistakes to AVOID as you complete your certification training. So long as you heed these tips, you’ll be sure to set yourself and your business up for long-term success!

Mistakes to avoid in makeup classes article, in-post image

Amanda Ramey’s 3 Sins to Avoid in Your Makeup Classes

Amanda Ramey is a multi-graduate and Student Ambassador of QC Makeup Academy. Through her hard work and dedication, she’s successfully obtained the following internationally-recognized qualifications:

  • Master International Makeup Professional (MIMP) certification/designation
  • International Special FX Makeup Professional (ISMP) certification/designation
  • Pro Makeup Workshop certificate
  • Airbrush Makeup Workshop certificate

Amanda is here to break down 3 important mistakes that one should never make while working through their makeup classes. The reason? Such errors will create a toxic mindset that you’ll carry with you into your professional career. As such, you’ll be more likely to alienate potential clients, collaborators, and employers. Thus, your brand may be perceived negatively and others in the industry will be less inclined to work with you.

So, what are these 3 mistakes to avoid? Watch the video below to find out!

The 3 Mistakes You Should Never Make in Your Makeup Classes:

Mistake #1: Rejecting Constructive Criticism

In general, constructive feedback is never a bad thing. So long as it’s provided in a positive, beneficial way, it serves only to help you grow. In the world of professional makeup, however, constructive criticism is ESSENTIAL!

After all, we’re all guilty of subjectivity. When you look at your own work through just your own lens, you can often miss a lot of fixable errors. Getting a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) opinion from someone who’s able to view your work objectively is often the only way to truly know where improvements can be made.

Now look, I get it: it’s never easy to have someone point out the flaws you’ve made. But the beauty industry can be extremely cutthroat at times, so you need a thick skin if you really want to prosper. Once you’re working professionally, you’re going to get told a lot, by all sorts of different people, if you’ve done something incorrectly.

In the real world, combating constructive feedback with defensiveness, anger, or negativity is guaranteed to stunt your chances of success. If you aren’t prepared or able to accept this kind of feedback in a calm and professional way, your career will probably end before it’s even had a chance to begin.

Learn This Skill in Your Makeup Classes!

So, maximize the time spent in your makeup classes by adjusting how you receive the constructive feedback provided by your tutors and/or fellow peers. If you find that you take it personally and become emotionally upset, I urge you to pause, take a step back, and ask yourself why it’s making you feel this way. Sometimes, it just takes time and honesty with one’s self to be able to comfortably accept constructive feedback from others.

But one way or another, you’ll NEED to learn this imperative skill… and the optimal place to start honing it is in your makeup classes!

Image of a displeased young pretty blonde cute woman in dress posing isolated over pink wall background covering ears because of loud.

Mistake #2: Relying on Others to Say When Work is Up to Standard

If you’re brand-new to makeup artistry, it’s to be expected that you haven’t developed your eye yet. At first, you won’t always be able to look at the applications you’re doing for your assignments and automatically know what can be done better. This is totally okay!

The only way to truly learn how to train your eye is to take full responsibility for your progress. This means not relying on others to tell you when your work is ready to submit to your tutor. If you shoulder this responsibility onto other people, you’ll never be able to properly identify correct vs. incorrect techniques or applications.

Remember: in the real world, everyone’s going to expect you to know what you’re doing. Other professionals won’t want to hold your hand through the process. If anything, they’ll probably be put off if they feel like that’s what you’re expecting of them.

Learn This Skill in Your Makeup Classes!

Use your makeup classes as a way to strengthen your eye. While it’s okay to ask others for their advice on your work, refrain from asking them if your assignment is “ready to submit”. Similarly, don’t ask this question when posting your work in QC’s Virtual Classroom! Yes, your peers can help guide you in the right direction. However, it’s not up to them to give you the answers.

Only YOU can truly know if you feel your work is ready for submission. And if it turns out that there were errors that you didn’t notice? Well, that’s exactly why your tutor is there to help you grow and get better! Take their feedback to heart (see Mistake #1), absorb it, and use it to train your eye. When you wind up working on your next assignment, you’ll already be a lot more critical and on the look-out for specific things to improve upon!

Mistake #3: A Negative, Argumentative, and Unprofessional Attitude

In many ways, this final mistake ties back in with the first one. As a professional makeup artist, your job will constantly involve you working closely with people. Thus, you need to have the right attitude at all times. Moreover, you need to know how to be flexible, accommodating, and work well with others. No one wants to be involved with someone who’s always in a bad mood or gets confrontational at the drop of a hat!

There will be days – as it is in life – when it feels impossible to keep your cool. However, it’ll only affect your career if you let it! No matter how a client, vendor, etc. is behaving, you must always be the bigger person. No, we’re not saying to let others mistreat you or take advantage of you. But there’s always a way to handle a negative situation that doesn’t involve it dragging you down to its level.

Learn This Skill in Your Makeup Classes!

QC’s Virtual Classroom is a great resource for connecting with other QC students grads, tutors, and industry professionals. By leveraging this platform, you can also start honing your professional mindset and self-reflect on your attitude. For example, do you get defensive easily if someone critiques your work? If you make an incorrect or inappropriate comment and someone calls you out on it, do you take responsibility and try to become better? Or do you become argumentative and try to make excuses?

These are all moments that can either help you shape yourself into a professional makeup artist of the highest standard… or they can be moments that further cement inappropriate behaviors, sure to damage your reputation once you pursue your career.

The choice, ultimately, is up to you.

QC Makeup Academy Ambassador Feature, Harleen Kaur Talwar, Feature Image

QC Makeup Academy Ambassador Feature: Harleen Kaur Talwar

By About the School, Graduate Feature, QC Student Ambassador, Student Ambassador 6 Comments

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Harleen Kaur. I’m married, have a 4-year-old son, and live in Norway. In the past, I’ve served both the aviation industry and sales industry. Now I’m an Entrepreneur and own my own company, LOOKSSTUDIO, in Norway. I have a passion to travel, listen to good music, and I enjoy learning and grasping knowledge as much as possible… especially when it comes to makeup artistry!

Why did you decide to become a professional makeup artist?

I decided to become a professional makeup artist because I’ve always wanted to make people smile. I’ve been in the service industry since 2012. Moreover, I used to work with customers in the aviation industry. During this time, I had to use and be familiar with a certain amount of makeup.

One fine day, out of the blue, my mother asked me to do her makeup. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but apparently she loved it! People around her loved her look and complimented her. Plus, she had the BIGGEST smile on her face! When I looked at her, I smiled, too. In that moment, I realized that if I could bring a smile onto the faces of others, I would get so much happiness in return. So, I decided to be a makeup artist!

QC Makeup Academy Ambassador Harleen Kaur portfolio image 1

Why did you decide to take online makeup classes, rather than enroll in a brick-and-mortar school?

Originally, I actually was looking for a brick-and-mortar school in Norway. But what I came across were schools that offered no in-depth courses. Moreover, their tuition was all extremely expensive, and the courses were only offered in a particular language.

I wanted something that was more global, as well as in the language which most people understood. While I was searching the internet, I came across celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Johnson. I quickly discovered that he’s the executive makeup instructor for QC Makeup Academy. As soon as I saw him, I recognized him from two seasons of Project Runway and thought “Why not learn from the master himself?”

For what other reasons did you choose to enroll in with QC Makeup Academy?

Firstly, QC Makeup Academy offers self-paced courses. Secondly, they also provide internationally-recognized makeup certifications. On top of that, many of QC’s courses provide starter makeup kits to aid in the students’ training. Personally, I LOVED the makeup kit I was given for the Master Makeup Artistry Course! Their eyeshadow, blush, highlighter, lip, concealer, and corrector palette are all lovely.

Furthermore, QC Makeup Academy provides both digital and physical copies of their course materials, as well as instructional videos you can watch online. If I ever want to be clear in my approach to the looks I’m doing, I can always go back and refer to these resources. Plus, I also love that there’s a Virtual Classroom on Facebook where any and every question can be answered by fellow peers, Student Ambassador, QC staff, and tutors!

You’ve graduated from QC Makeup Academy’s Master Makeup Artistry Course. How was your experience with this program and how would you say it helped you to grow as an artist?

“Incredible” would be a very small word to describe my experience. This course not only made me grow as an artist; it made me more confident, both personally and professionally!

The feedback I received from my tutors was totally bang on. It was never sugar-coated, which I appreciated. Rather, it was always very honest; said to try and bring out the in me. Through my training, I learned the core, fundamental techniques of makeup. I know now that I could never have learned this knowledge from just watching social media influencers. To be a professional MUA, you need a professional education.

In what ways would you say that QC Makeup Academy’s Pro Makeup Workshop built upon the knowledge learned in the MMA Course and refined your skill-set further?

This workshop is a step ahead and delves deeper into the art of makeup. In the Master Makeup Artistry Course, you lean the core techniques of makeup. Then, in the Pro Makeup Workshop, you develop your technical skills with more precision and through cleaner looks. It’s all about detailing and experimenting with your applications.

You’re also a recent graduate of QC Makeup Academy’s Hair Styling Essentials Course. Why do you want to add hair styling to your repertoire? How do you intend to incorporate this advanced training into your makeup career?

Personally, I believe that if one knows how to do makeup and hairstyling, then that person is preferable. Such complementary skills will surely set you apart from the competition! Whether it’s a bridal appointment or a movie set, you’ll ALWAYS be the preferred choice in the eyes of a potential client.

Not only will this additional qualification help you expand your clientele; you’ll also have a better salary. You can even be the savior for a “hair gone wrong” emergency during a fashion shoot!

How useful have QC Makeup Academy’s course materials and assignments been for your learning experience?

All of the materials I’ve received have been super fun, educational, and detailed. Each course has been very easy to follow every step of the way, whether it’s related to makeup or hairstyling. In fact, I always go back to the written material and assignments when I create new looks. My QC course materials are like my comfort area.

How valuable has been the feedback been from your QC Makeup Academy tutors, Nathan Johnson and Corianne Cowan?

I would say that Nathan is like an encyclopedia of makeup knowledge! His feedback is always to-the-point and honest. If your work is good, he’ll totally compliment you on where your strong points are. On the other hand, if you need to improve, he won’t sugar-coat it. Instead, he’ll be upfront about where you need to get better.

In particular, his feedback was especially beneficial for me during Unit B of the MMA Course. Nathan is truly an eye-opener. His feedback and words of wisdom are always in my mind palace. I’d easily say that he’s one of the best educators I’ve ever met in my life!

With Corianne, it’s like you’re working and learning from an all-rounder who knows it all. She is so gentle and sweet! Plus, she’s always approachable on social media and ready to help, no matter what you’re facing. She’s always there to above and beyond; letting you try all hair styling techniques and whatever suits you best for your assignments.

In the end, I can say that QC Makeup Academy, Nathan, and Corianne are like my second family. I can’t live without them!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned so far from your certification programs?

Balance and consistency (both in terms of clean looks and humbleness in work) will help you in achieving your goals. Never rush into things, and practice as much as possible! “Practice makes perfect” is what these programs have taught me!

You’ve recently joined QC’s team of Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, what’s the #1 thing you want brand-new students to know about QC Makeup Academy?

You’re located in Blystadlia, Norway. What has the COVID situation been like where you live? Has it affected the way you need to work as beauty professional? If so, how?

We are current in the second wave of COVID. Suddenly, the cases have increased. As a result, we’re in a partial lockdown wherein all malls and stores are closed. That being said, hair and beauty salons are allowed to remain open!

The beauty and personal care industry in Norway hasn’t changed much since 2019. Norwegians are typically affluent consumers who place a high degree of focus on appearance and personal care. Weddings and other such events are still happening. However, they can only have a maximum of 10 members present if it’s an indoor event. Because of this, many brides are either opting to do their own makeup, or they’re shifting their wedding dates.

But the fashion, movie, and television industries have not suffered as such. Moreover, the sale of cosmetics, haircare products, and skincare products have actually increased. This is, in part, because many social media influencers have increased the sales of eyeshadows and palettes.

What services do you currently offer your makeup clients?

Currently, I offer my clients makeup applications for day and night looks. For example, I offer ‘Deluxe Makeup’, which provides more attention to at least one focus point. I also teach a group makeup course (for a maximum of three people) that focuses on educating others on all the new medical and hygiene precautions/regulations out there. Recently, I’ve also been receiving a lot of male hairstyling clients in the salon where I work. I’m also a freelance MUA in this salon as well!

What are your top career goals as a makeup artist?

To be honest, my career goal is to provide the education and techniques I’ve learned to those who can’t afford professional training. I wish to be an educator to everyone who needs it! To achieve that, I wish to grasp as much education and knowledge as I can from every single sector of the makeup industry. In my eyes, you can never know too much!

I also have a dream of doing a makeup look with Nathan Johnson. I’d love to assist him in his work – even if it’s only for a few minutes!

Finally: In your opinion, what is the true secret of success as a makeup artist?

Without a good education, patience, and practice, one can never reach up to their goals in life. To have success as a makeup artist, one must have balance and maintain all three!
