Your Online Makeup Course: Which One is Right for You? - QC Makeup Academy

In Part One of this series, we discussed the main benefits of taking an online makeup course. With so many different options available, choosing the right training is the first step to kick-starting your career as a professional makeup artist.

To help you find the best fit for you, we’re breaking down exactly what kind of courses you can expect to find at an online make school.

What are the different makeup courses available?

While we can’t exhaustively list out every single professional makeup artistry course that exists online (there are some obscure makeup courses out there!), we can give you a general idea of what you can expect. Based on the types of courses offered here at QC Makeup Academy, here’s a rundown of some of the many types of makeup courses you can take online!

How to start a career with online makeup courses with QC makeup academy

Makeup Artistry:

A course like this will give you the skills you need to get started in the makeup artistry world. You don’t need to worry about being a total beginner: we all start somewhere! You can expect to learn the fundamentals of makeup—from sanitizing makeup to color-correcting a client’s skin. QC’s version of this course will teach you how to do every-day makeup (day and night!), bridal makeup, as well as the business skills to help you start your own freelance makeup business.

Master Makeup Artistry:

A step-up from the foundations course, the Master Makeup Artistry course will take your skills to the next level. You will learn all the basics as well as how to do high-fashion makeup and makeup for professional productions. From makeup for theatre productions to makeup for the runway, you’ll be able to do it all. QC’s Master Makeup Artistry course will also teach you how to conduct yourself in these fast-paced settings and make important industry connections.

Special FX Makeup

Special effects makeup is in a completely different ballpark. SFX makeup is a huge part of the professional makeup world and requires a vastly different skill set than the other makeup courses you’ll encounter. From the basics of learning how to age your clients to working with prosthetics, this field is quite extensive with a lot of room to grow. This Special FX Makeup course will go over 30 SFX makeup techniques as well as delve into the process of creating looks from analyzing scripts. You’ll also learn how to market your business in the industry.

Workshops

In addition to these extensive courses, some online makeup schools will offer workshops to help eager students learn additional skills to help them succeed. Some online makeup schools will host webinars or 1-off workshops with industry pros to current students. We can’t go over every workshop available out there (they’re not all available to the public), but here are some of the workshops QC Makeup Academy offers to prospective students:

  • Pro Makeup Workshop: Learn how to work with celebrity clients from Nathan Johnson, a professional celebrity makeup artist! You’ll learn advanced makeup techniques and some of his best-kept application techniques!
  • Airbrush Makeup Workshop: Heard the phrase “airbrush” makeup but didn’t know what it meant? Learn how to apply basic foundation and shadows using an airbrush machine (included with purchase of the workshop) and creating fantasy makeup characters.
  • Portfolio Development Workshop: Besides having a good quality makeup kit, there’s nothing more important to a professional makeup artist than their portfolio. You’ll learn how to organize and direct a styled shoot as well as create an outstanding portfolio to market your skills.

Remember that makeup is an ever-evolving art form. Even if you graduate from 3 different makeup courses today, there will always be a lot to learn. Always work on improving your own skills and pick up new tips and tricks to stay ahead of the game!
