Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Jennifer Draude, and I’m 32 years old. I live in Red Deer, Alberta and work full time as an Executive Assistant and part time as a Freelance Makeup Artist. I’m also a busy mother of 2 beautiful kids. I love makeup and have a bit of an addiction to Sephora and MAC. Some may say that it’s getting out of hand but not me! I’m hoping to grow my clientele a bit more so that one day I can live out my dream of becoming a full time makeup artist.
Why did you decide to pursue makeup as a career?
I decided to pursue a makeup career because I have always had a passion for it. In my spare time I’m constantly on YouTube watching makeup tutorials to find out what the latest makeup craze is. I thought about how cool it would be to do this for a career and that’s what I decided to do.
What kind of makeup looks do you enjoy doing the most and why?
That’s a hard question to answer because I love so many! But I have to say that I really enjoy Bridal. It’s an amazing feeling being able to make someone look and feel gorgeous on their big day.
So we noticed that you’re a freelancer, what advice would you give aspiring students who want to dive into the world of freelance makeup artistry?
My biggest piece of advice would be to never give up! This business isn’t always easy and it’s sometimes difficult to gain clientele on your own. Just be consistent and make sure you are constantly practicing and posting pictures of your work. You may have to compromise and lower your fees when first starting out to gain clientele, and that’s okay sometimes if you feel that it’s worth it to build your business. Small pain for long term gain!
Also, if you know a local photographer, try to pair up and offer to do makeup for some of their shoots. Its great exposure and good for your portfolio to have some professional shots.
It says on your website that you offer makeup lessons. What does this entail?
A lesson is a one-on-one session that is personalized to one’s style, makeup needs, and what they are comfortable with wearing. I try to teach with the products/brushes they have. If the client is in the market for new brushes and makeup, then I’m all for making suggestions during the private class.
Finally, what’s your must-have product for the summer?
I have to say my must have summer product is the Becca Cosmetics & Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on it, it really is amazing!
