It’s time for QC Makeup Academy’s annual Halloween Makeup Contest!
There will be an amazing prize for both categories, AND a special prize for QC students who enter the contest!
Hurry! Contest entries close on October 24th, 2015!
How It Works
This contest contains two categories. You can enter in one or both categories, the choice is yours.
Simply complete your makeup look, and send in your entry via email to firstname.lastname@example.org by October 24th.
In your email, you’ll need to include the following:
- Your full name
- Your student number if you are a QC student
- Your email address and a daytime phone number
- Your full mailing address
- Clear, high quality Before and After pictures of your model
- A brief description of the look you decided to create
On October 24th, we’ll post the semi-finalists to QC’s Facebook Page. You’ll vote for your favorites by liking the best photos! The five photos with the most “likes” by October 28th will be our finalists.
The five finalists in each category will be critiqued on video by the category judge who will also pick the grand prize winner!
Category #1: Gore Makeup
Create a gory character that you would expect to find in this photograph. To us, this screams zombie apocalypse or chainsaw massacre! Have fun and use your imagination!
Your Tutor & Judge
QC Tutor & Pro SFX Makeup Artist Michele Mulkey will judge the gore category. Here’s her advice for contestants:
I’m once again honored to be judging the “Gore” part of QC Makeup Academy’s Halloween Contest. I have a true passion for all things “Gore” and the challenge involved in creating a final makeup that is as realistic as it possibly can be. When judging the finalists, I will be looking for realistic coloring and flawless application with no visible edges; as well as checking for anatomical realism with the Gore makeup.
As I stated for last year’s contest, a realistic Gore makeup can be achieved in many ways, but regardless of the method you use, please be sure to make the safety of your model paramount with your application. Be sure to take extreme caution when working around the eye or mouth area and if gluing something to the skin, be very sure that the model does not have any allergies to the products you will be using. This can be achieved by doing what is called a “spot test” on the model (applying a very small amount of material to the inside of the model’s arm to see if they have any reaction to the product).
I’m beyond excited to see the entries for the 2015 QC Makeup Academy’s Halloween Contest! Good luck to everyone with your Gore makeup entries!
The Gore Makeup winner will receive a collection of Ben Nye and Graftobian Color wheels to create and transform any character! A set of 10 color wheels include bruise and injury wheels, aging wheels, and specialty collections!
Category #2: Fantasy Makeup
Create a fantastical creature that you might find within this image. A fairy princess? A mermaid? Some dark creature that lives in the tree? This category is wide open!
Your Tutor & Judge
We’re thrilled to announce that QC’s Executive Makeup Artist, Nathan Johnson, will be your judge! Here’s Nathan’s advice for contestants:
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! It is a time when you can make your exterior match your innermost imagination and no one will look at you with anything less than wonder! What a spectacular and creative time of the year.
Our annual halloween contest is upon us again, and I can say, based on last year, I am expecting some pretty amazing things! As the judge for the fantasy category, I wanted to offer up some tips that might help you take the grand prize!
What you can create:
ANYTHING! This is your moment to bring to life whatever is lurking in the dark crevices of your mind. Whether it be a dark and wicked troll queen or a bark covered princess of the woodland realm, I expect you to put your heart into your work and make some magic. I will warn you, a smokey eye that ombre’s the colors of the selected image, although beautiful, will not win this for you. To win, you need to create something that even makes you go…wow!
What I would like to see:
Creativity: Make something new, don’t do a new version of a popular youtube how-to. Dig into your imagination and create the character you would like to be if you lived in a different, fantastical world.
Skill: All the courses at QC are geared toward one thing, building a took kit that will help you to become a genius artist! Now is the time to flex the muscles you’ve developed and put them to the test. I want brilliant blending. Spectacular contouring. Great use of color. I expect makeup that utilizes all your skills.
Photo Quality: Take great images. If you want to have your work seen and celebrated, you will need beautiful, clear images. If you do not have a camera that can do that, ask around. Someone you know does. Also, don’t be afraid to bring mood and setting into your image. If you create a dark lord who has escaped from the world below the tree, feel free to cloak your model in a torn and tattered black robe and take the images in a forest near your house. Don’t just do a great makeup, create a great shoot!
Fun: I want to see the joy, magic and horror you create! Have fun every step of the way!
A special note: The image is an inspiration, do not be limited by it. Despite how beautiful and enchanting it is, there are also hints of darkness and even evil. Who is the hooded figure under that beautiful floating crystal. Is that the ruler of the land, or is it a prisoner, trapped in a beautiful cage and shrouded in vestments that keep their powers at bay. That dark hole under the tree… could it possibly be the doorway to another land? What or who lives there? This image is mostly beautiful, but your work does not have to be. For every bit of light, there is an equal bit of dark. Take your art in the direction you choose.
Bring the magic my loves!!!!
A couple of amazing color palettes will allow you to create countless creatures and face paints! You’ll receive the “On Set Palette FX” from Skin Illustrator, along with the “AquaColor Palette AC” from Kryolan.
Special Prize for QC Students & Grads
This contest is open to everyone, not just QC students and grads. However, this year we’ve decided to include a special prize that is reserved exclusively to QC students and grads!
So, if you are a QC student/grad, include your student number when you send in your entry! At the end of the contest period, we’ll draw a random QC student who entered the contest, and the lucky winner will receive a gorgeous Sephora Beautiful Crush Blockbuster Palette!
